It's time for your favorite all-Newfoundland and Labrador music show, broadcasting live from right here in Kitchener-Waterloo, ON. This is the only show that goes live to air from outside NL. Plus, brand new music from Dram & A Draw and Mychaela.I'll also be counting down the top 3 songs from our very first monthly NL music top 10 chart. Just a reminder that all the new songs featured on our "New Music Monday" segment are eligible for votes to determine the exclusive all-NL monthly top 10.And that's not all - I'll be chatting with Angie Reid from the Dildo Brewery about what's in store for Paddy's Day, plus playing as much incredible Newfoundland and Labrador music as I can fit into two rockin' hours.Don't forget, the live broadcast happens every Monday night at 6pm ET / 7:30pm NL on www.mix985.ca. Let's get this party started!
A group of musicians in Twillingate is recording an RPM Challenge album called Twillingreat
From a few chords to a new album. We meet the young string players from Strong Harbour Strings, who made an album for the RPM Challenge.
In this second part of this episode, Serene speaks frankly about his worst-ever album or least loved album anyway. Cutting Tailor Modern is the sixth of eight albums he recorded for the RPM Challenge in the month of February, 2015 (where you record a whole album in 28 days). It didn't get released so much as it escaped, with Serene trying to get other people to record the individual songs as Onus Records' Single of the Weekend instead of pushing a latest album under people's noses.Among the topics discussed in this next batch of songs: royalty free sax, loss of faith, U2, the six or seven stages of grief, Donovan, Levi Stubbs Jr. and Richard Nixon's farewell speech to the White House staff.Songs include "E.T.A.," "The Fight In Me," "I Am the Perpetrator," "What's 1 More Soul 2 the Devil?" "Shoulda Never Left," "Passionless" and "Come On Richard."Click here to stream the entire Cutting Tailor Modern album.Click here to read the backstory of The Dee Cups and hear their identical version of "I Am the Perpetrator."Click here to read the backstory of Donna Fortunata and hear Margo Brookover's version of "What's 1 More Soul 2 the Devil?."Catch Serene Dominic's weekly livecast "The Human Torch Floor Show" every Thursday at 8:00 MST on facebook.com/serenedominicClick here to learn about the history and guidelines of The RPM Challenge.Click here to take part in The Rpm Challenge.*

For seven consecutive years, Serene Dominic took the RPM Challenge and wrote and recorded an entire album in the month of February. Now in this talk-and-music analysis series, Serene and co-host Steve Asetta musical director of All Is Forgiven? and the upcoming Dark Lullaby podcast (coming in season 3) give track by track running commentary through these eight home-recorded albums. Our discussion continues on the rest of the Unnatural Blonde album, which was written to be a song by song companion to Alfred Hitchcock's 1958 classic Vertigo. Serene And Steve banter a lot about the movie and decide their Jimmy Stewart impersonations needs work. Other topics of discussion include unwitting percussion instruments and dangerous projectiles given for free at Yankees games, Kim Novak's Groucho eyebrows, that season of Dallas that was all a dream and of course, death.Songs include "Pinch Me," "This Means No," "It Is What It Is," "Dress You, Paint You," "Can't Unring a Bell," "Up! Up! Up1 (In three movements!)" and "Overwhelming Dream."Click here to watch Serene Dominic condense the entire Vertigo movie into a ten-minute musical.Click here to stream the entire Unnatural Blonde album.Catch Serene Dominic's weekly livecast "The Human Torch Floor Show" every Thursday at 8:30 MST on facebook.com/serenedominicClick here to read Serene's review of Jackie Gleason's The NOW Sound ... In this episode the pair analyze the Unnatural Blonde album which was written to be a song by song companion to Alfred Hitchcock's 1958 classic Vertigo. Other conversational tangents left unanswered I can filed here including when helicopters were first invented (1936), Nino Roto's disqualified Best Original Score Oscar nomination for The Godfather (the recycled score was withdrawn, ineligible and replaced by a nomination for Sleuth ), and where else do we know the actor who played Gavin Elster in Vertigo (he played Sir Halsey Hopewell in Flipper's New Adventure). No, thank you!Songs include "Swimming in the Head," "You'll Never Let Me Go," "Drop of a Hat," "I Stalk Around," "Dream Along with Me Darkly," "In Bed By Nine" and "All That Love Has Worn Away." In this episode of Creative Guts, co-hosts Laura Harper Lake and Sarah Wrightsman connect virtually with Tomás Shea, a chiptune, electro swing musician who goes by the name Game Boy! GAME BOY debuted his first album “Press Start” following the 2017 RPM Challenge. The Newfoundland resident’s music is a sublime mixture of Electro Swing, EDM, with melodic Chiptune nostalgia! A mechanical engineer by day, Tomas is a tinkerer with an adorable family. Tune in to learn about Tibb’s Eve (a tradition we’d be foolish not to adopt), how you can become an honorary Newfoundlander, and other Newfoundland facts from our first ever international guest! Hear about why Tomas started making music, how he hopes his tunes will make listeners feel, and more in this episode. Check out Game Boy on Bandcamp: www.game-boy.bandcamp.com. On this episode, Jake and Sean are joined by long-time friend of the pod and composer of the Listen In Podcast theme music, Ian Hughes. Ian talks about his new musical project, Brú na Bóinne, which started as part of the RPM Challenge to write and record an album in one month. He discusses his new album and the inspiration for his new project. He also plays a couple songs live, in-studio (Ian's basement), for your listening enjoyment. Sean, Jake and Ian also discuss the slew of new albums that have come out over the past week, including new releases from Weezer, Frankie Cosmos, The Last Shadow Puppets, Explosions in the Sky, Black Mountain, and Cam Boucher's new project Small Circle.
Jazz trombonist Nick Syman has challenged himself to write a large jazz ensemble piece based on the St. Anthony Falls collapse in 1869. Nick talks about how using a story can help you structure an instrumental piece of music. Nick also explains how the tension and release system of Afro-Cuban rhythms can help make more compelling melodies. And finally, we talk about our experience starting and finishing our Cagetones album in one month last February, for the RPM Challenge.
The gang is back and may be drinking a bit much. Ern is all married and shit. Doc does the News and a Korean Prostitute. Sam makes himself a wireless guitar system. Dane completes the RPM Challenge and brings in some music. Keith brings in some Monkees stuff. Davey Jones and the guitar player from Riot kick the proverbial bucket. Call the comment line at (206) 309-7308. Thanks for listening.
The gang is back and hitting the beer at a good pace. Doc has a family emergency and can't make the podcast. Dane is going to do the RPM Challenge and Sam is leaning towards doing it. Keith is still waiting for more horsepower. A real hot beefstick is passed around between the guys (you can take that anyway you want). Andy Samford does The Partridge Family. The guys listen to some Crumudgeon with The Gunk UK. Saturday Morning TV from years gone by. Call the comment line at (206) 309-7308. Feel free to leave anything you like on the Insignificast Facebook page. Hear Andy Samford at electricminnowmusic.com. Hear Crumudgeon and The Gunk UK on facebook and listen to the Gunkcast podcast. This week Tony Butterworth and Dave Criddle narcissistically play their own songs. 7 tunes out of last months 20 created for the RPM Challenge www.rpmchallenge.com. Even more confusingly this is one without them being in the same "studio" since they can no longer bare to be in each others presence.
