GGACP celebrates the birthday of Emmy-winning director and producer Allan Arkush by revisiting this in-depth interview from 2018. In this episode, Allan entertains Gilbert and Frank with tales of working at the late, great Fillmore East, crossing paths with Ol' Blue Eyes (and Groucho!) apprenticing for the legendary Roger Corman and helming the cult classic “Rock ‘n' Roll High School.” Also, Jackie Mason fails to connect, Malcolm McDowell talks to his crotch, Bruce Willis locks horns with Cybill Shepherd and “A Hard Day's Night” changes Allan's life forever. PLUS: P.J. Soles! “The Girl Can't Help It”! In praise of Alexander & Karaszewski! Zacherle introduces the Grateful Dead! And Allan (reluctantly) remembers “Caddyshack 2”! Friend of the podcast Kathy Biehl joins the guys to explore Groucho's only two produced scripts, the 1937 film "The King and the Chorus Girl", and the 1948 play "Time for Elizabeth" - which was later adapted for TV, featuring himself in the lead role. The crew delves into how these collaborations with Norman Krasna mark a conscious shift from Groucho's signature humor, pondering what might have driven him to this new direction. They'll guess which lines bear Groucho's unmistakable stamp, and weigh in on his acting chops in Elizabeth. By the end, you'll have the answer to the big question: Did Groucho need the funny?
In this week's episode, Thos takes a close look at the 1930 Marx Brothers musical comedy film, Animal Crackers, and its place against the backdrop of a number of transitions - the move from stage to screen for the madcap quartet, the loss of popularity of Hollywood film musicals at the end of the 1920s, the move from prosperity to economic slump following the Wall Street Crash, and how the film industry was learning to adapt stage shows for the silver screen after only four years of talkies! And we take an additional look at Margaret Dumont, dubbed by Groucho himself as the "fifth Marx Brother", who began with opera and ended in rock 'n' roll and who worked with Laurel and Hardy, and WC Fields along the way. As Groucho said "Blessed are the crack(er)ed, for they shall let in the light!"

This week, I'm reading the sixteenth chapter of the Peter David penned movie novelization of the 1991 Rocketeer film. This chapter takes place in The South Seas Club, like last chapter, and is great fun. Cliff wreaks absolute chaos on mob boss Eddie Valentine's club (crime doesn't pay, kids!). The full clip is here. The novelization adds a few interesting tidbits that I suspect were artistic license, like the first person that Cliff runs into when he is on the waiter's cart being Margaret Dumont (who was in many Marx Brothers films as the straight woman to their gags). Here she is with Groucho in a clip from A Night at the Opera in a somewhat similar location, this also being a fancy restaurant. Thanks for listening!∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞ Signup for the mailing list for a free special edition podcast, a demo copy of The Thirteenth Hour, and access to retro 80s soundtrack!Like what you see or hear? Today on another encore edition of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to illustrator & cartoonist Drew Friedman, son of the great writer, screenwriter and author, Bruce Jay Friedman. Known for his pop culture writing, including screenplays like Stir Crazy with Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor and Doctor Detroit, Bruce Jay was part of the well-heeled Manhattan literary, pop culture and social scene, with his own table at the once-fashionable & paparazzi friendly Elaine's restaurant in the 70s and 80s. Bruce Jay Friendman was also a novelist with books like The Lonely Guy (which became a film with Charles Grodin and Steve Martin) & as well as a playwright for productions like Scuba Duba &Steambath which became a PBS production in 1973. This literati scene rubbed off on Drew who was always obsessed with drawing and cartoons from a very early age. This passion led to a career as a cartoonist for magazines like The New Yorker, National Lampoon, Spy, Newsweek and many more. In turn, this led to caricature books & illustrations with titles like Old Jewish Comedians, Maverix and Lunatix: Icons of underground Comics and All The Presidents. Drew Friedman became famous for his lifelike if sometimes slightly demented images of B-movie actor Tor Johnson, public access television host Joe Franklin, comedian Ernie Kovacs (ahem) and Groucho Marx and many more. The aptly named Drew Friedman is our guest this week because this is the Rarified Heir Podcast and everyone has a story. This one is fascinating. Take a listen.

Patreon Justin has picked some gems and corkers before, like Blood Simple and Hard Eight, and this time he's chosen the little known 1992 comedy, Brain Donors."Brain Donors" was produced during a time when Hollywood was revisiting and paying homage to classic comedy styles, and its production was heavily influenced by the desire to recreate the Marx Brothers' iconic brand of humor. The film was written by Pat Proft, known for his work on the "Naked Gun" series, and produced by David Zucker, Jerry Zucker, and Jim Abrahams, the trio behind many successful comedies of the 1980s. Their involvement ensured that the film would be packed with rapid-fire jokes, slapstick, and absurdity, staying true to the spirit of the Marx Brothers while adding a modern twist. The project was initially conceived as a direct tribute to the Marx Brothers, with the working title "Lame Ducks," and the characters were loosely based on Groucho, Chico, and Harpo Marx.John Turturro, who played the Groucho-esque character Jacques, was a standout in the cast, bringing his unique energy and comedic timing to the role. The production faced challenges in balancing the homage to classic comedy with appealing to contemporary audiences, which led to mixed reactions upon its release. Despite its star-studded creative team and ambitious vision, the film struggled at the box office, partly due to limited marketing and the niche appeal of its humor. However, over time, "Brain Donors" has garnered a cult following, appreciated for its commitment to reviving the chaotic, irreverent spirit of the Marx Brothers. The making of the film reflects a passionate attempt to honor a bygone era of comedy, even if it didn't achieve mainstream success. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter.www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesbackPlot SummaryRoland T Flakfixer, Jacques and Rocco, a trio of eccentric misfits, are hired by the wealthy widow Lillian Oglethorpe to establish a ballet company in honor of her late husband. A mysterious sentient energy lowly reincarnated as red tide—the harmful algal bloom sharing its red phosphorous with methamphetamine—returns to the scenes of its coming-of-age atrocities, narrating this punk rock shadowing of The Secret History and Lord of the Flies from the vantage of its ominous panoramic ocean. In tandem, we observe The Vigil: a gang of neurotic teenagers living on a strict diet of speed, alcohol, and 25-cent pudding pies, craving power and vengeance in a small beach town where the police are closing in on them and “Mom,” their enabling matriarch on her last hurrah. An Evening With Groucho Marx (Part 1 of 2)Released in 1972, An Evening With Groucho Marx was recorded live at three venues, Carnegie Hall in New York City, C.Y. Stephens Auditorium at Iowa State University, and Masonic Auditorium in San Fransisco. Groucho is introduced by Dick Cavett and is accompanied on piano by Marvin Hamlisch.
Excerpt of the 18 Nov 1948 Kraft Music Hall starring Al Jolson. Groucho Marx was the guest star on this program, but this segment is from the middle section of the broadcast, and features Al Jolson and Oscar Levant, in comedy and song. After a cheesy introduction by Levant, Al Jolson sang "Dirty Hands, Dirty Face," "I Wonder What's Become of Sally," and "Christmas Dreaming," a holiday song rarely heard today. There is much more in the complete show, including a comedy routine with Groucho. The complete broadcast, along with other Jolson radio shows, is available at the Official Al Jolson Website at www.jolson.org.
Welcome back, dear listener, to yet another episode where we break away from what we usually do. Of course, if you can tell us what our style actually is, we'd be forever grateful—and frankly, a little astonished. In this delightfully short episode, we plead with you, our dearest listener, to spread the word about this podcast to five of your closest companions. The ones who'd still hug you even if you've been sick down the front of your shirt. Your efforts in spreading the word will earn our undying gratitude and possibly a new set of friends. What do you say, ready to embark on this charade with us? Remember, your support is the peanut butter to our jelly, the Groucho to our Marx. Thanks for listening, and spreading the nonsense! Steve Stoliar is an author and writer best known for his memoir 'Raised Eyebrows: My Years Inside Groucho's House', in which he recounts his fascinating experience living with the legendary comedian Groucho Marx. Stoliar worked as Groucho's personal secretary during the final years of the icon's life, spending three years at the Marx family home. His book offers a unique, behind-the-scenes look at the aging Groucho, blending humor, affection, and poignancy as Stoliar reflects on the quirks and complexities of living with one of comedy's greatest minds. Through his stories, Stoliar captures Groucho's sharp wit, his eccentricities, and the bittersweet reality of watching a cultural giant fade away. Raised Eyebrows provides fans with an intimate and very funny glimpse into the private world of a man whose public persona was as brash and irreverent as it was endearing.

David Fleming, Erin's nephew, offers raw and compelling insight into the complex life of Groucho's “secretary.” He recounts visits to his aunt at Groucho's home and encounters with the man himself. We are treated to contemporary letters from Erin, describing life at the Marx house, her relationship with Groucho, and her later descent into madness. David shares firsthand memories of Erin's battle with mental illness in explicit detail, and explains why it was predictable. He also speculates on why Groucho was drawn to Erin. A sympathetic yet unfettered exploration of a tragic story that you won't find anywhere else. NOTE: This episode contains adult language and content.

“They are cartographers of the “Dimauve” or “Dim-Mauve Desert” – celestial rhythms, fuzz hymnals & channeled lyrics, ghost box transmissions, and serpentine sinew are the tools used to map the Dimauve. This is a document of their initial sessions.” DIMtZUM’s “The Mauve Sessions” is a somatickally performed-yet-transcontinental audiosigil created by Frater Perseus and Revel Rosz. Fight the worship of generative AI & flippant social media depersonalization by HAUNTING the somatick with true works of individual art from anarchic artists. ABOUT DIMtZUM: The creation and whirlwind magicks utilized to conjure a surprise and powerful record, whilst in the midst of piecing outing my song sigil series, is a fantastick example of the hauntsigil, personally, but hypersigil, commonly, in turn. My Hauntomancy within DIMtZUM is best exemplified by the communion of the Spectre of my youth—one doused in the desert heat and cradled within the fuzz gospel of bands such as The Melvins, Unwound, Fugazi—and one that I have always cherished, yet, never knew how to conjure those deep influences until this project arose. The Aspectre was also danced with, as I found myself white-eyed and ravenous to experiment with my own talismanic instruments in ways hitherto unknown, inspired by the cosmick rhythms of Frater Perseus somatickally performed in his own magickal artspace called The Mauve Room, and allowed me to tether his conjurations from my Dimming Room: A rather analog & somatick affair considering we were transcontinental in collaboration, but one that kept the dirty ghost within a baritone fuzz gospel based upon performance rather than post-production. Without disrespectfully constituting Frater Perseus' own utilization of Hauntomancy within this sigil, or discussing his own praxis without his explicit description, I will say a marked element of Hauntomancy I noticed with Perseus' construction of the DIMtZUM rhythms was that of letting go of long charged and utilized syncopations. He almost retired these long toiled with rhythms to haunt on within these DIMtZUM songs; an exorcism of what was through true communion. He has told me that a lot of these rhythms, although created long ago but never utilized, nor found an appropriate home, can now find their unfinished business somewhat fulfilled upon this DIMtZUM HauntSigil. A fantastic example of Hauntomancy at play as the praxis was both a reverent dirge to what was as well as an ecstatic road-opening to forthcoming, newfangled experimentations. Here is the full mastered 6 song album I created with Frater Perseus for the DIMtZUM project and a full visualizer! The album will be released via bandcamp and youtube at 6am on 8/4/24. We chose this release date and time due to celestial elections, and hope our navigation proves fruitful. The visualizer uses drone footage from Logan Ford that we shot at and around his property of DIRT HAWK RANCH, NM. I also added my analog tape glitch for fun effect. But this is more about the musick than anything else… Also, here’s the sigil for the projekt. We mixed the Arabic word for “dim”, the Hebrew word for “tsom/tsum” (the root of TZUM), my custom WtH font, the therefore symbol, all into a DIM MAUVE CACTUS: Musick this episode courtesy of DIM ∴ TZUM: Photography by Logan Ford. Biographer, cultural critic, and comics veteran Danny Fingeroth joins Noah and Bob for a game of Marx Brothers "What If...?" inspired by the multiverse series Danny worked on in his days at Marvel Comics. They ask, what if Groucho had become a doctor? What if Chico had been good with money? What if Zeppo had been good at...well, performing? Danny also discusses growing up in the Marxes' old New York neighborhood and how Lee Harvey Oswald's killer Jack Ruby helped get Gabe Kaplan to participate in Marxfest.
George Fenneman was the announcer... and straight man... and of course Groucho Marx was the host. They were lifelong friends...right up to 1977 when Groucho passed away. Groucho Marx was the "King of Wit" and he could turn anything into something funny, especially if he had "targets" - the contestants on this show that is still seen on many cable TV shows and Youtube channels. This of course, is the radio version of a 1952 show with the secret word "Age"...always a good show. From Groucho: I, not events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today. I can choose which it shall be. Yesterday is dead, tomorrow hasn't arrived yet. I have just one day, today, and I'm going to be happy in it.
Renowned “Dark Artist” Chet Zar chats with Keats of PRAGMAGICK about his brilliant artworks and their methods, the confluence of art & magick, conversations with the muse & the serpent, his creature FX work and the whims & blunders of the artist archetype in this modern digital age. A two part liminalstream, now combined as a mondo-sode with brilliant arts and DARK ART MAGE, Chet Zar! We definitely made up for the MARS/ALGO/URANUS techno goofjuice that ended our first liminalstream. This has to be one of my favorite discussions that truly exemplify that ‘third mind’ communion of pragmatism and magick as we saunter through the inner/outer/supra realities that conduct a modern artist’s paradigm. An in-depth report on Marxfest 2024 with two of Noah's co-organizers, Kathy Biehl and Jonny Porkpie. Detailing each event, they share stories of the fans, presenters and performers who made it an unforgettable time. We'll also share some choice audio clips. Along the way, you'll learn the real reason why Groucho didn't appear on “Welcome Back Kotter”, and hear Josh Max's McCartney-esque version of the “Love Happy” theme. In addition, we are thrilled to present three exclusive Marx Brothers radio excerpts provided by John Tefteller. These clips, from presumed-lost radio shows, premiered at the fest and will be featured in John's upcoming release of restored Marx radio appearances, available (hopefully) later this year.
The old Groucho line has rarely been more apropos than in this week's episode. Everybody's turning their back on poor Clyde. The hottie Sondra, the matriarchal Elizabeth Griffiths, and in fact the entire Griffiths clan, save one of the Griffiths girls.
