Gospel Matthew 18:15-20 Jesus said to his disciples: "If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have won over your brother. If he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, so that every fact may be established on the testimony of two or three witnesses. If he refuses to listen to them, tell the Church. If he refuses to listen even to the Church, then treat him as you would a Gentile or a tax collector. Amen, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Again, amen, I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything for which they are to pray, it shall be granted to them by my heavenly Father. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” Reflection The beautiful thing about the ministry of Jesus is he cares for the church, the institution in a sense, where we're all going, but it also cares for the individuals involved. He cares about our relationships because they are so crucial. And if someone is in a relationship with you and they're doing something negative, you need to point it out. If they won't listen you ask others to join you. If they don't listen, you use the authority of others. But the key is you don't stay in the relationship. You leave it because the heart of the message is the truth that God has placed in our hearts. And that truth is, that what God is creating is people that think alike, that work together, that aren't at odds with each other. And when they gather in Jesus' name and want the truth, there is Jesus in their midst accomplishing and bringing the truth and light and life. Closing Prayer Father, nothing is more important in your kingdom than the flow of life between us. As individuals seeking you, loving you. Wanting to be more what you call us to be. Full Text of ReadingsMemorial of Saint Maximilian Kolbe, Priest and Martyr Lectionary: 415The Saint of the day is Saint Maximilian Mary KolbeSaint Maximilian Mary Kolbe's Story “I don't know what's going to become of you!” How many parents have said that? Maximilian Mary Kolbe's reaction was, “I prayed very hard to Our Lady to tell me what would happen to me. She appeared, holding in her hands two crowns, one white, one red. She asked if I would like to have them—one was for purity, the other for martyrdom. I said, ‘I choose both.' She smiled and disappeared.” After that he was not the same. He entered the minor seminary of the Conventual Franciscans in Lvív–then Poland, now Ukraine– near his birthplace, and at 16 became a novice. Though Maximilian later achieved doctorates in philosophy and theology, he was deeply interested in science, even drawing plans for rocket ships. Ordained at 24, Maximilian saw religious indifference as the deadliest poison of the day. His mission was to combat it. He had already founded the Militia of the Immaculata, whose aim was to fight evil with the witness of the good life, prayer, work, and suffering. He dreamed of and then founded Knight of the Immaculata, a religious magazine under Mary's protection to preach the Good News to all nations. For the work of publication he established a “City of the Immaculata”—Niepokalanow—which housed 700 of his Franciscan brothers. He later founded another one in Nagasaki, Japan. Both the Militia and the magazine ultimately reached the one-million mark in members and subscribers. His love of God was daily filtered through devotion to Mary. In 1939, the Nazi panzers overran Poland with deadly speed. Niepokalanow was severely bombed. Kolbe and his friars were arrested, then released in less than three months, on the feast of the Immaculate Conception. In 1941, Fr. Kolbe was arrested again. The Nazis' purpose was to liquidate the select ones, the leaders. The end came quickly, three months later in Auschwitz, after terrible beatings and humiliations. A prisoner had escaped. The commandant announced that 10 men would die. He relished walking along the ranks. “This one. That one.” As they were being marched away to the starvation bunkers, Number 16670 dared to step from the line. “I would like to take that man's place. He has a wife and children.”“Who are you?”“A priest.” No name, no mention of fame. Silence. The commandant, dumbfounded, perhaps with a fleeting thought of history, kicked Sergeant Francis Gajowniczek out of line and ordered Fr. Kolbe to go with the nine. In the “block of death” they were ordered to strip naked, and their slow starvation began in darkness. But there was no screaming—the prisoners sang. By the eve of the Assumption, four were left alive. The jailer came to finish Kolbe off as he sat in a corner praying. He lifted his fleshless arm to receive the bite of the hypodermic needle. It was filled with carbolic acid. They burned his body with all the others. Fr. Kolbe was beatified in 1971 and canonized in 1982. Reflection Father Kolbe's death was not a sudden, last-minute act of heroism. His whole life had been a preparation. His holiness was a limitless, passionate desire to convert the whole world to God. Friends of the Rosary, Today is the Memorial of Saint Maximilian Kolbe (1894-1941), a martyr and priest. Born in Zdunska Wola, Poland, as Raymond Kolbe, he consecrated himself to the Lord in the Franciscan Order. Filled with love for the Virgin, he founded the Militia of the Immaculata movement of Marian consecration. To better "win the world for the Immaculata," with his preaching and writing, undertook an intense apostolic mission in Europe and Asia. Imprisoned in Auschwitz during the Second World War, he offered himself in exchange for the father of a large family who was to be executed. He was given a lethal injection on August 14, 1941. Pope John Paul II canonized Maximilian as a "martyr of charity" in 1982, proclaiming him the "Patron Saint of Our Difficult Century. Maximilian, patron of the pro-life movement, was a ground-breaking theologian. He developed the Church's understanding of Mary as a "Mediatrix" of all the graces of the Trinity and as an "Advocate" for God's people. Deuteronomy 10: 12-22; Rs psalm 147: 12-15.19-20; Matthew 17: 22-27 THE OBLIGATION TO GIVE EXAMPLE ON PAYING TAXES   The theme for our meditation today is: The Obligation to Give Example on Paying Taxes. One important thing for us to know from today's Gospel reading is about Jesus and His apostles paying taxes. This time, Jesus teaches us about our obligations as members of society and citizens. Jesus of Nazareth apart from being a spiritual teacher, he was also a public figure and a citizen of His time.   In an interview about the importance of paying taxes honestly and responsibly, the current Minister of Finance of the Republic of Indonesia said that citizens who love their homeland and nation are certainly aware of their obligation to pay taxes. Their right to live, work and enjoy life that is protected by the state must be in line and balanced with the obligation to pay taxes. The use of the tax is to sustain education, health, physical and mental development of the nation, salary for state officials and all other state financing.   Such situations occur in any country in the world. Useful taxes, for example to pay for education and health, especially for the lower middle class, are more or less the same as the vision and mission proclaimed by Moses to the Israelites. He emphasized that they had received all the goodness and mercy of God from time to time. So they were obliged to provide a sense of justice and help the poor and abandoned segments of society, namely the widows, orphans and strangers.   There are at least two things to be learned from Jesus through the preaching of the Gospel today. First, the obligation to pay taxes has a background in the work done in society, which generates profits, and which is related to the involvement of other community members. Jesus and His apostles realized this was very real with regard to His public ministry, so it was their work that became the real object of tax in society. Jesus told Peter to take the money and then pay taxes for both of them.   Second, because public service made Jesus and His apostles special and then they were considered popular, teachers and public figures, they had to be models of obedience to pay taxes. Jesus did this so as not to become a scandal for many people: people with important position or role must give an example in doing good, namely to pay taxes. So it's not the words, appeals or advice of many to pay taxes, but the actual act of paying it itself becomes a model for many people. Hopefully we will grow in awareness of the obligation to pay our taxes to the state.   Let's pray. In the name of the Father... In Your hands O Father, we want to put our destiny in life especially today, may our personal life and together with others today always provide an atmosphere of peace and harmonious relations. Velankanni Mother Mary Novena in Hindi | DAY 02 का विषय - धन्य कुँवारी मरियम : बचाए जा रहे लोगों की माँ मरियम पवित्र बाइबिल में दो प्रकार की सृष्टियों का वर्णन है जैसे पवित्र बाइबिल को ही दो भागों में बाँटा गया है। दोनों की तुलना भी हम कर सकते हैं और करना भी चाहिए। हम आदम के बारे में विचार नहीं कर रहे हैं, पर हेवा के बारे में। 'हेवा' शब्द का अर्थ ही "सभी मानव प्राणियों की माता"। (उत्पत्ति ग्रन्थ 3:20) आदम ही अपनी पत्नी को यह नाम दिए। लेकिन कब दिए इसको जानना भी अतिआवश्यक है। मनुष्य के पतन के बाद, ईश्वर उन्हें अदन-वाटिका से बाहर कर दिए। उसके बाद ही आदम अपनी पत्नी को हेवा नाम दिए। नई सृष्टि भी एक वाटिका के बाहर ही हुई थी। गेथसेमनी बारी या वाटिका कलवारी पहाड़ के पास ही था। दोनों की शुरुवात एक पेड़ के सम्बन्ध से ही हुई, पर जहाँ एक का पतन हुआ तो दूसरे का उद्धार। दूसरी सृष्टि में भी आदम ही नई हेवा को एक नाम दिए। इसमें दिलचस्प बात यह है - दोनों को "माँ" कहा जाता है। जहाँ एक ओर 'हेवा' शब्द का अर्थ ही "सभी मानव प्राणियों की माता" है दूसरी और नया आदम अपनी माँ को मुक्ति प्राप्त लोगों की माँ घोषित करते हैं। प्रभु येसु क्रूस पर मरने ही वाले थे; उसी समय यह घटना घटती है - 26) ईसा ने अपनी माता को और उनके पास अपने उस शिष्य को, जिसे वह प्यार करते थे देखा। उन्होंने अपनी माता से कहा, "भद्रे! यह आपका पुत्र है"। 27) इसके बाद उन्होंने उस शिष्य से कहा, "यह तुम्हारी माता है"। उस समय से उस शिष्य ने उसे अपने यहाँ आश्रय दिया। (सन्त योहन का सुसमाचार 19:26-27) जिस व्यक्ति को प्रभु अपनी माँ को देकर उन दोनों के बीच एक नया सम्बन्ध जोड़ रहे थे उसका कोई नाम नहीं दिया गया है। उसकी पहचान यह है "उस शिष्य को, जिसे वह (प्रभु येसु) प्यार करते थे"। प्रभु जिनको अपनी मृत्यु से मुक्त कर रहे थे उनमें से प्रथम फल पाने वाले वहीं खड़े थे। प्रभु एक नई सृष्टि का निर्माण कर रहे थे। उस में प्रवेश पाने वालों की माँ 'हेवा' नहीं बल्कि "दूसरी हेवा" हैं अर्तार्थ "धन्य कुँवारी मरियम ईश्वर की माँ" । प्रभु येसु का वह प्रिय शिष्य सभी मुक्ति-प्राप्त लोगों के प्रतिनिधि के रूप में खड़े थे। और ईश्वर जिस मुक्ति की बात करते हैं, वह केवल पापों से छुटकारा नहीं है। यह तो एक सम्बन्ध है जिसके तहत सभी मुक्ति-प्राप्त लोग प्रभु येसु के समान बनाये जायेंगे। क्यों? "क्योंकि ईश्वर ने निश्चित किया कि जिन्हें उसने पहले से अपना समझा, वे उसके पुत्र के प्रतिरूप बनाये जायेंगे, जिससे उसका पुत्र इस प्रकार बहुत-से भाइयों का पहलौठा हो।" (रोमियों के नाम सन्त पौलुस का पत्र 8:29) यदि सभी मुक्ति-प्राप्त लोग प्रभु येसु के भाई-बहन हैं, तो क्या धन्य कुँवारी मरियम उनकी माँ नहीं हैं? "यदि कोई निष्कलंक मरियम को अपनी माँ के रूप में नहीं चाहता है, वह येसु मसीह को अपने भाई के रूप में नहीं पा सकेगा।" "If anyone does not wish to have Mary Immaculate for his Mother, he will not have Christ for his Brother." Maximilian Mary Kolbe's reaction was, “I prayed very hard to Our Lady to tell me what would happen to me. She appeared, holding in her hands two crowns, one white, one red. She asked if I would like to have them—one was for purity, the other for martyrdom. I said, ‘I choose both.' She smiled and disappeared.” After that he was not the same. He entered the minor seminary of the Conventual Franciscans in Lvív--then Poland, now Ukraine-- near his birthplace, and at 16 became a novice. Though Maximilian later achieved doctorates in philosophy and theology, he was deeply interested in science, even drawing plans for rocket ships. Ordained at 24, Maximilian saw religious indifference as the deadliest poison of the day. His mission was to combat it. He had already founded the Militia of the Immaculata, whose aim was to fight evil with the witness of the good life, prayer, work, and suffering. He dreamed of and then founded Knight of the Immaculata, a religious magazine under Mary's protection to preach the Good News to all nations. For the work of publication he established a “City of the Immaculata”—Niepokalanow—which housed 700 of his Franciscan brothers. He later founded another one in Nagasaki, Japan. Both the Militia and the magazine ultimately reached the one-million mark in members and subscribers. His love of God was daily filtered through devotion to Mary. In 1939, the Nazi panzers overran Poland with deadly speed. Niepokalanow was severely bombed. Kolbe and his friars were arrested, then released in less than three months, on the feast of the Immaculate Conception. In 1941, Fr. Kolbe was arrested again. The Nazis' purpose was to liquidate the select ones, the leaders. The end came quickly, three months later in Auschwitz, after terrible beatings and humiliations. A prisoner had escaped. The commandant announced that 10 men would die. He relished walking along the ranks. “This one. That one.” As they were being marched away to the starvation bunkers, Number 16670 dared to step from the line. “I would like to take that man's place. He has a wife and children.” “Who are you?” “A priest.” No name, no mention of fame. Silence. The commandant, dumbfounded, perhaps with a fleeting thought of history, kicked Sergeant Francis Gajowniczek out of line and ordered Fr. Kolbe to go with the nine. In the “block of death” they were ordered to strip naked, and their slow starvation began in darkness. But there was no screaming—the prisoners sang. By the eve of the Assumption, four were left alive. The jailer came to finish Kolbe off as he sat in a corner praying. He lifted his fleshless arm to receive the bite of the hypodermic needle. It was filled with carbolic acid. They burned his body with all the others. Fr. Kolbe was beatified in 1971 and canonized in 1982. Reflection Father Kolbe's death was not a sudden, last-minute act of heroism. His whole life had been a preparation. His holiness was a limitless, passionate desire to convert the whole world to God. Even more so martyrs. Maximilian Kolbe was so impressive a man that he may have been canonized even if that oh-so-brief, oh-so-intense, my-life-for-his exchange in the grim prison yard of Auschwitz had not led to his martyrdom. Baptized as Raimund, from a young age Kolbe felt the call to self-sacrificing holiness. When he was a boy of twelve, the Virgin Mary came to him in a vision and held out two crowns for him to choose from: one white for a life of purity, and one red for martyrdom. The pre-teen Maximilian responded to his Lady: “I choose both.”Maximilian, along with his older brother, entered a local Franciscan seminary as a teen. When he was just eighteen, his superiors sent him to study in Rome, where he earned doctorates in philosophy and theology summa cum laude. He was ordained a priest in 1918 and the next year returned to the new, post-World War I country of Poland. For the next twenty plus years, Father Maximilian powered his way through life. He taught in a Franciscan seminary. He started an immense publishing house which printed devotional materials promoting the Army of the Immaculate. He founded a new Franciscan monastery, which rapidly grew into one of the largest in Poland. And in 1930 he became a missionary to the Far East. He went to China, had little success, and so went on to Japan, where he founded a monastery near Nagasaki. He also started a publishing house in India. In 1936 he returned to Poland due to ill health. But he didn't stop. He continued to manage various Marian publications, which were widely circulated, and even procured a radio license and began broadcasting from his own monastery radio station. As he immersed himself in the thousands of details of these varied apostolates, Father Kolbe maintained a disciplined life of prayer, mortification, and daily Mass.After the Germans invaded Poland in September 1939, Kolbe's apostolates were curtailed. He organized a hospital at the monastery and, along with the reduced community of brothers, gave shelter to refugees, including about 2,000 Jews. He was arrested by the Germans in 1939 and held for almost three months. He was pressured, but refused, to sign a document recognizing his German ancestry (Kolbe's father was an ethnic German) in exchange for more food rations and better treatment. In February 1941, German SS men came and shuttered his monastery. Kolbe and four other friars were arrested, though twenty other brothers offered themselves in their stead. In May 1941, Kolbe was transferred to the heavy labor division of Auschwitz for the last act of his life.He carried out his priestly ministry as best he could in the hell of Auschwitz and endured severe beatings for it. In July, just two months after he arrived, a prisoner escaped from the camp. As both deterrent and reprisal, the head of the camp ordered ten men to be starved to death in the escapee's place. The victims were chosen at random from a prisoner roll call. One of the unfortunate chosen, a married man named Francis, begged for mercy: "My wife! My children!" What followed this desperate pleading was profound, left an indelible impression on all who witnessed it, and is packed with an almost liturgical character.Perhaps remembering his childhood vision of the Virgin, and perhaps inspired that the chosen man shared the name Francis with the founder of his religious order, Kolbe removes his cap and slowly emerges from the bedraggled group of prisoners. A filthy, striped rag of a uniform is draped over his skeletal frame. He is barefoot. But he has dignity. There are no frivolous men in Auschwitz. He speaks directly to the commanding officer in German: “I want to take his place.” Kolbe's bearing must command respect, because, according to an eye-witness, the officer responds to him using the formal “You.” “Warum wollen Sie für ihn sterben?”—“Why do you Sir want to die for him?” “Because he has a wife and children.” “What is your profession?” “I am a Catholic priest.” A few moments of silence and then “Gut.” “Good” or “Right.”After two weeks of no food or water in a bunker, a guard injected carbolic acid into the arm of the indestructible Kolbe on August 14. His body was cremated the next day. His ashes floated from the smokestack over the gray wasteland of Auschwitz on August 15, the Feast of the Assumption. He, a priest, became what he offered. Like Saint Polycarp of old, burned like bread at the stake, Kolbe's life ended in a liturgical doxology where his own body became the bread of sacrifice.First-class relics of Saint Maximilian exist only because his Franciscan barbers thought he was a saint. They saved hairs from his head and beard without his knowledge. The man whose life he saved, Francis Gajowniczek, lived for another fifty-three years, to the age of 93, dying in 1995. He was present in Rome when Pope Saint John Paul II, who lived just an hour from Auschwitz in 1941, canonized his fellow Pole Saint Maximilian Kolbe in 1982.Saint Maximilian Kolbe, you were prepared to be generous in your last moments by a long life of sacrifice, humility, and devotion. A special presentation of “Passion of Saint Maximilian Kolbe” by Dr. Kazimierz Braun on the occasion of the Feast Day of St. Maximilian Kolbe and the 80th anniversary of his death. This drama narrates the last period of the life of Saint Maximilian Kolbe. The story starts with Fr. Kolbe's arrest by Germans during World War II on February 17th, 1941, goes through his sufferings in a prison in Warsaw, and ends with his martyrdom and death in the German concentration camp Auschwitz, on August 14th, 1941. This presentation includes a special bonus feature at the end of the play with Dr. Kazimierz Braun. Dr. Braun is a writer, theatre director, and scholar. Based on his research in Kraków, Harmęże, Auschwitz, and Niepokalanów in Poland, as well as in Nagasaki, Japan, he has written three biographical plays on St. Maximilian Kolbe. He is considered one of the world's foremost experts on St. Maximilian.

Full Text of ReadingsMemorial of Saint Maximilian Kolbe, Priest and Martyr Lectionary: 418All podcast readings are produced by the USCCB and are from the Catholic Lectionary, based on the New American Bible and approved for use in the United States _______________________________________The Saint of the day is Saint Maximilian Mary Kolbe“I don't know what's going to become of you!” How many parents have said that? Maximilian Mary Kolbe's reaction was, “I prayed very hard to Our Lady to tell me what would happen to me. She appeared, holding in her hands two crowns, one white, one red. She asked if I would like to have them—one was for purity, the other for martyrdom. I said, ‘I choose both.' She smiled and disappeared.” After that he was not the same. He entered the minor seminary of the Conventual Franciscans in Lvív--then Poland, now Ukraine-- near his birthplace, and at 16 became a novice. Though Maximilian later achieved doctorates in philosophy and theology, he was deeply interested in science, even drawing plans for rocket ships. Ordained at 24, Maximilian saw religious indifference as the deadliest poison of the day. His mission was to combat it. He had already founded the Militia of the Immaculata, whose aim was to fight evil with the witness of the good life, prayer, work, and suffering. He dreamed of and then founded Knight of the Immaculata, a religious magazine under Mary's protection to preach the Good News to all nations. For the work of publication he established a “City of the Immaculata”—Niepokalanow—which housed 700 of his Franciscan brothers. He later founded another one in Nagasaki, Japan. Both the Militia and the magazine ultimately reached the one-million mark in members and subscribers. His love of God was daily filtered through devotion to Mary. In 1939, the Nazi panzers overran Poland with deadly speed. Niepokalanow was severely bombed. Kolbe and his friars were arrested, then released in less than three months, on the feast of the Immaculate Conception. In 1941, Fr. Kolbe was arrested again. The Nazis' purpose was to liquidate the select ones, the leaders. The end came quickly, three months later in Auschwitz, after terrible beatings and humiliations. A prisoner had escaped. The commandant announced that 10 men would die. He relished walking along the ranks. “This one. That one.” As they were being marched away to the starvation bunkers, Number 16670 dared to step from the line. “I would like to take that man's place. He has a wife and children.” “Who are you?” “A priest.” No name, no mention of fame. Silence. The commandant, dumbfounded, perhaps with a fleeting thought of history, kicked Sergeant Francis Gajowniczek out of line and ordered Fr. Kolbe to go with the nine. In the “block of death” they were ordered to strip naked, and their slow starvation began in darkness. But there was no screaming—the prisoners sang. By the eve of the Assumption, four were left alive. The jailer came to finish Kolbe off as he sat in a corner praying. He lifted his fleshless arm to receive the bite of the hypodermic needle. It was filled with carbolic acid. They burned his body with all the others. Fr. Kolbe was beatified in 1971 and canonized in 1982. Reflection Father Kolbe's death was not a sudden, last-minute act of heroism. His whole life had been a preparation. His holiness was a limitless, passionate desire to convert the whole world to God. Faith directs us to bind ourselves from beginning to end, our first and last commitment with God. We have a covenant with God that is once and for all times. God is eternal and His will can not change, so what He already established is true from beginning to end. One of the examples of the establishment from God which our Gospel today proclaims is the marriage promise of a man and a woman. The basis for this promise is the creation of each according to the image and likeness of God, the creator. Each of them was gifted with the ability to choose, to like and to ensure who the right person to be loved. We all believe that God plays also the role to make possible this special realtionship. That's why we also recognize that one's soul mate is really sent by God to be a very precious gift for a man or a woman. God, through the Church, consecrates this unity of love through the ministry of the sacrament of matrimony. Its solemn celebration in the Church is to give sign that God is the One who officially inaugurates this marriage and it becomes holy. The relationship that has been initiated and nurtured from the beginning is now bound lawfully before the Church and the world. The couple takes its reponsibility to maintain this until the end of their lives. God is eternal, and so His establishment must be also eternal. What if there is failure, namely a marriage life does not last long? That was the problem in the time of Moses when the Israelites insisted on Him to legalize marriage divorce. They seemed to believe that marriage divorce is a need. This problem had come down to the time of Jesus, and continues until today. In essence, any actions that destroy and invalidate the marriage covenant, Jesus says in His teaching, are sins of fornication. This is a grave sin. This sin clearly eliminates the divine establishment on the matrimony. Then how do we care for and maintain that bond of marriage? There must be many instructions and ways for answering this question. In the light of the Word of God and today's celebration, there is one way we can propose the strengthen the bond of marriage and family life. It is a way to follow the model. The common methods such as teaching, guidance, counseling, and spiritual activities in group dynamics are still considered useful, but imitation the model is surely the most concrete and lasting method. Our primary model is the Lord Jesus Christ. Long before the birth of Jesus into the world, the prophet Ezekiel had told his listeners that God remains faithful even though humans often fall in unfaithfulness. Because He remains faithful, he will always draw unfaithful men and women back to be the faithful ones. Saint Maximilian Kolbe and all the other saints are also our models for being faithful to the end of our lives. Let's pray. In the name of the Father ...
