Nació en Tagaste (África) el año 354; después de una juventud algo desviada doctrinal y moralmente, se convirtió, estando en Milán, y el año 387 fue bautizado por el obispo Ambrosio. Vuelto a su patria, llevó una vida dedicada al ascetismo, y fue elegido obispo de Hipona. Durante treinta y cuatro años, en que ejerció este ministerio, fue un modelo para su grey, a la que dio una sólida formación por medio de sus sermones y de sus numerosos escritos, con los que contribuyó en gran manera a una mayor profundización de la fe cristiana contra los errores doctrinales de su tiempo. Murió el año 430.

Memoria de San Agustín Benedicto XVI nos habla sobre San Agustín Quiero volver a las meditaciones sobre los Padres de la Iglesia y hablar hoy del Padre más grande de la Iglesia latina, san Agustín: hombre de pasión y de fe, de altísima inteligencia y de incansable solicitud pastoral. Este gran santo y doctor de la Iglesia a menudo es conocido, al menos de fama, incluso por quienes ignoran el cristianismo o no tienen familiaridad con él, porque dejó una huella profundísima en la vida cultural de Occidente y de todo el mundo. Por su singular relevancia, san Agustín ejerció una influencia enorme y podría afirmarse, por una parte, que todos los caminos de la literatura latina cristiana llevan a Hipona (hoy Anaba, en la costa de Argelia), lugar donde era obispo; y, por otra, que de esta ciudad del África romana, de la que san Agustín fue obispo desde el año 395 hasta su muerte, en el año 430, parten muchas otras sendas del cristianismo sucesivo y de la misma cultura occidental. Pocas veces una civilización ha encontrado un espíritu tan grande, capaz de acoger sus valores y de exaltar su riqueza intrínseca, inventando ideas y formas de las que se alimentarían las generaciones posteriores, como subrayó también Pablo VI:  «Se puede afirmar que todo el pensamiento de la antigüedad confluye en su obra y que de ella derivan corrientes de pensamiento que empapan  toda  la  tradición doctrinal de los  siglos  posteriores» (AAS, 62, 1970, p. 426:  L'Osservatore Romano, edición en lengua española, 31 de mayo de 1970, p. 10). San Agustín es, además, el Padre de la Iglesia que ha dejado el mayor número de obras. Su biógrafo, Posidio, dice:  parecía imposible que un hombre pudiera escribir tanto durante su vida. En un próximo encuentro hablaremos de estas diversas obras. Hoy nuestra atención se centrará en su vida, que puede reconstruirse a través de sus escritos, y en particular de las Confesiones, su extraordinaria autobiografía espiritual, escrita para alabanza de Dios, que es su obra más famosa. Las Confesiones, precisamente por su atención a la interioridad y a la psicología, constituyen un modelo único en la literatura occidental, y no sólo occidental, incluida la no religiosa, hasta la modernidad. Esta atención a la vida espiritual, al misterio del yo, al misterio de Dios que se esconde en el yo, es algo extraordinario, sin precedentes, y permanece para siempre, por decirlo así, como una "cumbre" espiritual. Pero, volvamos a su vida. San Agustín nació en Tagaste, en la provincia de Numidia, en el África romana, el 13 de noviembre del año 354. Era hijo de Patricio, un pagano que después fue catecúmeno, y de Mónica, cristiana fervorosa. Esta mujer apasionada, venerada como santa, ejerció en su hijo una enorme influencia y lo educó en la fe cristiana. San Agustín había recibido también la sal, como signo de la acogida en el catecumenado. Y siempre quedó fascinado por la figura de Jesucristo; más aún, dice que siempre amó a Jesús, pero que se alejó cada vez más de la fe eclesial, de la práctica eclesial, como sucede también hoy a muchos jóvenes. San Agustín tenía también un hermano, Navigio, y una hermana, cuyo nombre desconocemos, la cual, tras quedar viuda, fue superiora de un monasterio femenino. El muchacho, de agudísima inteligencia, recibió una buena educación, aunque no siempre fue un estudiante ejemplar. En cualquier caso, estudió bien la gramática, primero en su ciudad natal y después en Madaura y, a partir del año 370, retórica en Cartago, capital del África romana:  llegó a dominar perfectamente el latín, pero no alcanzó el mismo dominio en griego, ni aprendió el púnico, la lengua de sus paisanos. Precisamente en Cartago san Agustín leyó por primera vez el Hortensius, obra de Cicerón que después se perdió y que se sitúa en el inicio de su camino hacia la conversión. Ese texto ciceroniano despertó en él el amor por la sabiduría, como escribirá, siendo ya obispo, en las Confesiones:  «Aquel libro cambió mis aficiones» hasta el punto de que «de repente me pareció vil toda vana esperanza, y con increíble ardor de corazón deseaba la inmortalidad de la sabiduría» (III, 4, 7). Pero, dado que estaba convencido de que sin Jesús no puede decirse que se ha encontrado efectivamente la verdad, y dado que en ese libro apasionante faltaba ese nombre, al acabar de leerlo comenzó a leer la Escritura, la Biblia. Pero quedó decepcionado, no sólo porque el estilo latino de la traducción de la sagrada Escritura era deficiente, sino también porque el mismo contenido no le pareció satisfactorio. En las narraciones de la Escritura sobre guerras y otras vicisitudes humanas no encontraba la altura de la filosofía, el esplendor de la búsqueda de la verdad, propio de la filosofía. Sin embargo, no quería vivir sin Dios; buscaba una religión que respondiera a su deseo de verdad y también a su deseo de acercarse a Jesús. De esta manera, cayó en la red de los maniqueos, que se presentaban como cristianos y prometían una religión totalmente racional. Afirmaban que el mundo se divide en dos principios: el bien y el mal. Así se explicaría toda la complejidad de la historia humana. También la moral dualista atraía a san Agustín, pues implicaba una moral muy elevada para los elegidos; quienes, como él, se adherían a esa moral podían llevar una vida mucho más adecuada a la situación de la época, especialmente los jóvenes. Por tanto, se hizo maniqueo, convencido en ese momento de que había encontrado la síntesis entre racionalidad, búsqueda de la verdad y amor a Jesucristo. Y sacó también una ventaja concreta para su vida:  la adhesión a los maniqueos abría fáciles perspectivas de carrera. Adherirse a esa religión, que contaba con muchas personalidades influyentes, le permitía seguir su relación con una mujer y progresar en su carrera. De esa mujer tuvo un hijo, Adeodato, al que quería mucho, muy inteligente, que después estaría presente en su preparación para el bautismo junto al lago de Como, participando en los Diálogos que san Agustín nos dejó. Por desgracia, el muchacho falleció prematuramente. Cuando tenía alrededor de veinte años, fue profesor de gramática en su ciudad natal, pero pronto regresó a Cartago, donde se convirtió en un brillante y famoso maestro de retórica. Con el paso del tiempo, sin embargo, comenzó a alejarse de la fe de los maniqueos, que le decepcionaron precisamente desde el punto de vista intelectual, pues eran incapaces de resolver sus dudas; se trasladó a Roma y después a Milán, donde residía entonces la corte imperial y donde había obtenido un puesto de prestigio, por recomendación del prefecto de Roma, el pagano Simaco, que era hostil al obispo de Milán, san Ambrosio. En Milán, san Agustín adquirió la costumbre de escuchar, al inicio con el fin de enriquecer su bagaje retórico, las bellísimas predicaciones del obispo san Ambrosio, que había sido representante del emperador para el norte de Italia. El retórico africano quedó fascinado por la palabra del gran prelado milanés; y no sólo por su retórica. Sobre todo el contenido fue tocando cada vez más su corazón. El gran problema del Antiguo Testamento, de la falta de belleza retórica y de altura filosófica, se resolvió con las predicaciones de san Ambrosio, gracias a la interpretación tipológica del Antiguo Testamento:  san Agustín comprendió que todo el Antiguo Testamento es un camino hacia Jesucristo. De este modo, encontró la clave para comprender la belleza, la profundidad, incluso filosófica, del Antiguo Testamento; y comprendió toda la unidad del misterio de Cristo en la historia, así como la síntesis entre filosofía, racionalidad y fe en el Logos, en Cristo, Verbo eterno, que se hizo carne. Pronto san Agustín se dio cuenta de que la interpretación alegórica de la Escritura y la filosofía neoplatónica del obispo de Milán le permitían resolver las dificultades intelectuales que, cuando era más joven, en su primer contacto con los textos bíblicos, le habían parecido insuperables. Así, tras la lectura de los escritos de los filósofos, san Agustín se dedicó a hacer una nueva lectura de la Escritura y sobre todo de las cartas de san Pablo. Por tanto, la conversión al cristianismo, el 15 de agosto del año 386, llegó al final de un largo y agitado camino interior, del que hablaremos en otra catequesis. Se trasladó al campo, al norte de Milán, junto al lago de Como, con su madre Mónica, su hijo Adeodato y un pequeño grupo de amigos, para prepararse al bautismo. Así, a los 32 años, san Agustín fue bautizado por san Ambrosio el 24 de abril del año 387, durante la Vigilia pascual, en la catedral de Milán. Después del bautismo, san Agustín decidió regresar a África con sus amigos, con la idea de llevar vida en común, al estilo monástico, al servicio de Dios. Pero en Ostia, mientras esperaba para embarcarse, su madre repentinamente se enfermó y poco más tarde murió, destrozando el corazón de su hijo. Tras regresar finalmente a su patria, el convertido se estableció en Hipona para fundar allí un monasterio. En esa ciudad de la costa africana, a pesar de resistirse, fue ordenado presbítero en el año 391 y comenzó con algunos compañeros la vida monástica en la que pensaba desde hacía bastante tiempo, repartiendo su tiempo entre la oración, el estudio y la predicación. Quería dedicarse sólo al servicio de la verdad; no se sentía llamado a la vida pastoral, pero después comprendió que la llamada de Dios significaba ser pastor entre los demás y así ofrecerles el don de la verdad. En Hipona, cuatro años después, en el año 395, fue consagrado obispo. Al seguir profundizando en el estudio de las Escrituras y de los textos de la tradición cristiana, san Agustín se convirtió en un obispo ejemplar por su incansable compromiso pastoral:  predicaba varias veces a la semana a sus fieles, ayudaba a los pobres y a los huérfanos, cuidaba la formación del clero y la organización de monasterios femeninos y masculinos. En poco tiempo, el antiguo retórico se convirtió en uno de los exponentes más importantes del cristianismo de esa época:  muy activo en el gobierno de su diócesis, también con notables implicaciones civiles, en sus más de 35 años de episcopado, el obispo de Hipona influyó notablemente en la dirección de la Iglesia católica del África romana y, más en general, en el cristianismo de su tiempo, afrontando tendencias religiosas y herejías tenaces y disgregadoras, como el maniqueísmo, el donatismo y el pelagianismo, que ponían en peligro la fe cristiana en el Dios único y rico en misericordia. Y san Agustín se encomendó a Dios cada día, hasta el final de su vida:  afectado por la fiebre mientras la ciudad de Hipona se encontraba asediada desde hacía casi tres meses por los vándalos invasores, como cuenta su amigo Posidio en la Vita Augustini, el obispo pidió que le transcribieran con letras grandes los salmos penitenciales "y pidió que colgaran las hojas en la pared de enfrente, de manera que desde la cama, durante su enfermedad, los podía ver y leer, y lloraba intensamente sin interrupción" (31, 2). Así pasaron los últimos días de la vida de san Agustín, que falleció el 28 de agosto del año 430, sin haber cumplido los 76 años. It began with a program called the Basquiat Project. The Basquiat Project is an arts education program developed by the Brooklyn Nets in partnership with the New York City Department of Education. It ran in fifty Brooklyn middle and high schools, asking students to make work about bullying, anxiety, and how you move through it. Out of everyone who submitted, about a hundred pieces made it into the show at the Brooklyn Museum.Leo was one of them. For today's episode, Leo and his mom joined me in my Bushwick studio. Leo got his hands dirty and helped me prepare some new paintings, then we sat down with the mics and had this conversation. Porque, amigos, mientras los clérigos debaten y el pusilánime emperador Graciano se aleja de las funciones de gobierno, el tejido social se desangra. A los soldados curtidos en el barro del Rin y de Britania no les importan las sutilezas teológicas; de los concilios no se come. Las legiones claman por orden y por un líder férreo que les devuelva la dignidad perdida. ¡Exigen un Teodosio para Occidente! Y esa chispa, esa esperanza, brilla en las brumas de Britania. Allí, un general hispano, invicto y de la vieja guardia, observa la mediocridad reinante mientras algo se prepara en los cuarteles. Victoria is undertaking one of Australia's most ambitious electricity transitions. The state is aiming for 65% renewable electricity by 2030 and 95% by 2035, replacing ageing coal-fired power stations with renewable electricity, batteries and offshore wind while keeping the lights on and consumers' bills down. Regresamos hoy a Occidente después de varios episodios con la mirada puesta en la pars orientalis, donde nos detuvimos en Adrianópolis, en la llegada de Teodosio al poder, en el problema godo y en las grandes convulsiones religiosas de Constantinopla. Pero al volver la mirada hacia la vieja mitad occidental del Imperio descubrimos un paisaje inquietante: emperadores jóvenes, cortes dominadas por camarillas, una economía debilitada, ciudades que comienzan a languidecer y una aristocracia cada vez más poderosa que, ante el desastre que perciben, se refugian en esos sus universos privados que son sus villae rurales. En medio de ese mundo que se agrieta, eso sí, emerge con una autoridad cada vez mayor: la Iglesia. Y al frente de ella, dos figuras colosales están llamadas a marcar el destino de Occidente: Ambrosio de Milán y el papa Dámaso. Uno, antiguo gobernador, aristócrata, político implacable y obispo por aclamación popular. El otro, hispano de la Gallaecia, superviviente nato de intrigas, exilios, violencia urbana y luchas sangrientas por el trono de Pedro. Ambos compiten entre sí, ambos desconfían de Teodosio y ambos comprenden que, ante la debilidad del poder imperial, ha llegado la hora de que los obispos hablen como príncipes. El corazón de de un Occidente frágil, convulso y fascinante nos espera…allá en donde el poder espiritual comienza a levantar la mano sobre las ruinas del poder político. A new project from bassist Dave Ambrosio unearths jazz compositions from the 1960s that reflect the progressive politics and musical spirit of the time. Recorded for the Blue Note label, many of the original songs were shelved for years before being released. A new album titled Civil Disobedience features new versions of those songs recorded by Ambrosio's band of the same name. They will perform an album release show at Joe's Pub on June 11. Anthony D'Ambrosio directed, wrote, and produced the outstanding new film Triumph of the Heart about St. Maximilian Kolbe. In this inspiring interview, he discusses the difficult path he and his team charted to produce this independent film with a low budget, high artistic standards, and deep Catholic spirituality. Film is an expensive medium. Since a high budget requires one to calculate mainstream appeal in order to make one's money back, a low budget can leave more room for artistic and spiritual integrity. Though the production faced many hardships, it was buoyed up by the hope that the project could break a new path for other Catholic filmmakers to follow.
