What an absolute circus of clown shoes. The Miami Dolphins' 2024 season came to a close in appropriately embarrassing fashion on Sunday: by allowing Aaron Rodgers to look like his former self and pass all over them. Tyler Huntley looked inept and out of his depth. Mike McDaniel did too. It was just gross. The Miami Dolphins did what they needed to do to keep their slim playoff hopes on life support on Sunday by defeating the Cleveland Browns 20-3. Tyler Huntley demonstrated an improved comfort with the team's offense and played better than in his previous appearances, leading the team in rushing along the way. Tyreek Hill had a bounce back game and Jonnu Smith equaled the franchise record for touchdowns in a single season by a tight end. The defense largely performed as you would expect them to against a subpar quarterback in Dorian Thompson-Robinson, bending-but-not-breaking and holding the Browns to three points on the day. Of course, many of the Mike McDaniel Dolphins' hallmark shortcomings were on display as well, but Miami is still better than this Cleveland team that is simply playing out the string and angling for the highest draft pick possible. While the win was important in terms of ensuring the Dolphins play a mathematically significant game in Week 18, the larger concern for the team was the absence of Tua Tagovailoa, who missed his fifth game of the season after a hip injury suffered two weeks ago in Houston and aggravated against San Francisco left him unable to participate in the eyes of the team's training staff. Tua's inability to be available didn't cost the Dolphins on this day, but there is uncertainty about his availability in Week 18 and it surely must be front of mind for this organization as it prepares for what will be a pivotal offseason, whether it begins next Sunday evening or later. In a development that should shock absolutely nobody, the Miami Dolphins FAILED to win a road game in December against a playoff-bound opponent. And the blame can be pointed at all the usual suspects. Their $230M franchise quarterback saved arguably his worst performance of the season for one of the biggest games. The WR1 whom the Dolphins traded premium draft capital to acquire once again disappeared, running incorrect routes and dropping passes. The Miami Dolphins CRUISED to victory over the New England Patriots on Sunday. It was the first time all season and perhaps since last November that things felt "easy" for the Dolphins, leaping out to a 31-0 lead early in the third quarter. The Miami Dolphins' offense was practically unstoppable as the Dolphins defeated the Las Vegas Raiders 34-19 on Sunday. Scoring on ever possession (except the very end of the first half), the team's offensive evolution took center stage. Not only did they take what the Raiders gave them, but Tua Tagovailoa was able to scramble and create plays off-schedule, a pair of characteristics that have been missing. The Miami Dolphins received a big lift on Sunday as Tua Tagovailoa returned to the field. The Dolphins' offense immediately looked cohesive and functional. They moved the ball well in the air and on the ground, much like the famous song suggests. However, as has been demonstrated time and again, they are not a well-coached team. Sloppy mistakes stunted promising drives. The team's $200 million dollar quarterback fumbled a snap that hit him in the hands, resulting in a safety. And the defense, which had been praised by many for the deceptive stats presented over the season's first six games, was absolutely shredded in the second half. The coach, who successfully established the run early, once again shied away from it late in the game. Some will blame injuries. Others will chalk it up to a brilliant performance by Kyler Murray. But the fact is, the Miami Dolphins have once again failed to put together a cohesive, 60-minute demonstration of complementary football. The result is that the team currently sits with a 2-5 record, three games behind the first-place Buffalo Bills, who are looming as a dominant road opponent in Week 9. The vibes are bad and there's ultimately nowhere for these players and coaches to point the finger but at themselves. Sometimes a win is a win, even when it's not terribly pretty. That's what the Dolphins managed to do on Sunday in New England, beating out a very weak Patriots team 15-10 behind 193 rushing yards on 41 attempts. While it took some time (and a concussion to Devon Achane), the Dolphins finally began attacking the Patriots with downhill runs and it proved to be very effective. Once again, the Miami Dolphins came into the national spotlight with a chance to change the narrative around themselves. On Thursday night, rather than change the narratives, they reinforced just about every negative narrative surrounding them. The Buffalo Bills came into Hard Rock Stadium and were more or less gifted the game. The Dolphins were sloppy and inconsistent. The quarterback made poor decisions. The head coach made poor decisions. The team looked flat out unprepared. And then, with the game having mostly slipped away, Tua Tagovailoa took matters into his own hands, scrambling for a first down and initiating contact with Bills safety Damar Hamlin. The result was the quarterback lying on the ground, going into the familiar fencing position that we have all come to recognize as a sign of a concussion. Tua left the game, along with Jeff Wilson, Robert Jones, and Terron Armstead, who all suffered from injuries as well. It was a disaster rolled into a nightmare, but it is the unfortunate reality. It wasn't pretty. In fact, there were large stretches where it was downright ugly, but the Miami Dolphins dug deep and pulled out a 20-17 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars in their 2024 season opener at Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday afternoon. After a slow start, Miami's offense began to look like itself in the second half, with significant contributions from the usual suspects, namely Tua Tagovailoa, Devon Achane, Tyreek Hill, and Jaylen Waddle. But there were other contributions as well, including some late tough runs by Jeff Wilson. There was also Alec Ingold running up the middle from the off-set I-formation to great success in short yardage situations, a testament both to Coach McDaniel and the offensive line. On the defensive side of the ball, Calais Campbell made an impact, as did Emmanuel Ogbah, and Jaelan Phillips. Of course, the biggest and most impactful play of the game came courtesy of Jevon Holland, who punched the ball out of the arms of Travis Etienne on a play that seemed destined to be a dagger in the Dolphins' hopes of victory. Instead, it resulted in a game-changing turnover that propelled the Dolphins' to a 4th quarter comeback victory.Of course, there are plenty of things to break down and worry about, including predictably worrying performances by the interior offensive and defensive lines. Jordan Power and Jalen Ramsey had moments that were worrying.
