We zijn natuurlijk constant onze ideeën over uitgestorven dieren aan het bijschaven, onder andere omdat we met elke technologische stap vooruit of nieuwe fossiele vondst weer nieuwe details ontdekken. Nu zouden we dus ook ons beeld van The Meg moeten bijstellen. Niet massief als een witte haai, maar langer en slanker. Dat baseren onderzoekers op een analyse van een incomplete set fossiele wervels. Volgens deze groep wetenschappers zijn er in het verleden wat foute aannames gedaan over Megalodon. Zo zou als vergelijkingsmodel meer dan eens een jonge witte haai gebruikt zijn, terwijl er toch echt duidelijke anatomische verschillen aan te wijzen zijn. Er bestaan nu van eenzelfde fossiel verschillende schattingen in lengte. Dat schiet natuurlijk niet op. Eerder onderzoek suggereerde dat Megalodon een stuk minder snel heeft gezwommen dan eerder werd gedacht. Dat zou aansluiten bij de langere slankere lichaamsvorm die hij volgens dit laatste onderzoek moet hebben gehad. Maar om helemaal zeker te weten hoe het dier er ooit uitzag zou het wel nog steeds nodig zijn om ten minste één volledig skelet te vinden. Massief en snel, of slank en sloom: een ontmoeting met dit roofdier moet in beide gevallen behoorlijk angstaanjagend zijn geweest. Uit onderzoek is bijvoorbeeld al gebleken dat door mensen opgevoede hondenpuppies veel meer kwispelen dan door mensen opgevoede wolvenpups. Ook is al eens ontdekt dat honden naar rechts kwispelen bij positieve ervaringen, zoals het terugzien van hun baasje, maar naar links bij spannende situaties waaruit ze zich willen terugtrekken. Honden kwispelen meer dan andere hondachtigen, ook als ze volwassen zijn. Vermoedelijk heeft dat met ons selectieproces bij het fokken te maken gehad. En mogelijk deden we dat, opperen deze wetenschappers nu, omdat de mens enorm gevoelig is voor ritme. Er is wel flink wat onderzoek nodig om dat met meer zekerheid te kunnen zeggen. Er zijn ook genoeg andere aannemelijke theorieën. Mogelijk hebben we erop geselecteerd tijdens het fokken omdat we de kwispelcommunicatie prettiger vinden dan geblaf.
