In this conversation, April and I dive into how Christian nationalism has shaped modern evangelicalism and American politics, the fear-based messaging that keeps people from questioning their beliefs, and what it really means to deconstruct faith while holding onto a deep love for Jesus. We explore the impact of misinformation, culture wars, and political agendas on religious spaces, and how to navigate difficult conversations with family and friends who see faith and politics differently. April shares her experience of rebuilding her faith outside of fear, control, and rigid ideology, offering hope to anyone who has ever felt the tension of questioning long-held beliefs.Whether you're deconstructing, reconstructing, or simply curious about the intersection of faith, culture, and politics, this episode will challenge and inspire you. When you hear the phrase "Christian Nationalism," what do you think of? A harmful set of ideologies that threaten democracy? A buzzword phrase used by bad people to demonize good Christians? April Ajoy has had a journey of conscience from being a full-throated Christian Nationalist to someone fighting against the damage she now sees in that set of dogmas. The real trick of it was that at the time, she didn't know that phrase, or why it would have applied to her. She just thought she was being a faithful Christian. On this week's show, she'll talk about her new book Star Spangled Jesus. It tells the story of growing up the daughter of a prominent pastor, and touring the world to evangelize the gospel with her family. She went from absolute certainty in her Christian faith and it's unbreakable connection to Republican party politics, to a massive moral crisis and painful deconstruction. April Ajoy wouldn't have called herself a Christian Nationalist when she performed her original song “America Say Jesus” on the Jim Bakker show, or when she participated in Jesus Marches across America, or when she posted cringe-worthy videos on YouTube to campaign for Mitt Romney. April just considered herself a good Christian: faithful, Republican, and determined to make America a Christian nation once again. But as her view of the world widened, Ajoy began to see cracks in her steadfast beliefs and recognized the ways her conservative politics and religion were intertwined in her mind. The collection is inspired by Americana vibes as a nod to the country's, and the sister's, collective spirit going into the 2024 Olympic Summer. Coming off of UVA's 2024 NCAA Championship Team Title, the Walsh Sister dove right into their SPORTI photo capture for this collection. They only took a few days off. They did the photo shoot and launched their STAR SPANGLED SUMMER COLLECTION May 8th. A lot had to happen to make this collection a success. We talk about that process, and we look ahead to the Olympic summer and the Walsh Sister's goals in the pool. Notably, Alex unpacks her decision to take a 5th year UVA...and she was on the fence about doing it. The Walsh Sisters cover a lot of ground in this podcast. We hope you like it!

Jan Diehm and Michelle McGhee, data journalists at The Pudding, analyzed the pitch fluctuations of over a hundred famous performances to answer these questions and more.
