The incident occurred on January 15, leading to a code-red lockdown. Superintendent Chris Ragsdale expressed condolences and emphasized the need to identify students needing help. This marks the third shooting on a Cobb County School District campus in the past year. The district invests over $35 million annually in safety, including its own police force and a partnership with Servius Group for threat assessments and tracking safety indicators, including mental health and trafficking risks. STORY 2: Marietta Domestic Violence Shelter to Open Pet Sanctuary LiveSafe Resources in Marietta is adding four pet shelter units to its 40-bed emergency shelter, allowing domestic violence survivors to bring their pets. This initiative addresses a significant barrier, as many victims delay leaving abusive situations due to concerns for their pets' safety. About 47% of victims hesitate to leave, with 78% facing threats to their pets. The $230,000 project, funded by grants and donations, includes amenities like heating, cooling, and outdoor play areas. This addition aims to remove barriers for survivors seeking safety, emphasizing the importance of keeping families and pets together. STORY 3: ''Language is the Tool': Cobb Library Director Shares Vision Keith Schuermann, newly appointed director of the Cobb County Public Library System, brings over 20 years of experience and a passion for libraries as community hubs. Inspired by his early volunteer work in Cleveland, Schuermann views libraries as places of creativity and engagement. He plans to enhance Cobb's libraries with creative opportunities, like director read-alouds, and oversee renovations, starting with the South Cobb Regional Library. Schuermann aims to build on the library's excellence, following in the footsteps of former director Helen Poyer, and expand services to better serve the community's needs. Born in July 2022, he has completed over 300 hours of training and holds multiple American Kennel Club certifications. The department introduced Bentley on Facebook, inviting the community to welcome him as he starts his important role in providing support to those in need. STORY 5: Powder Springs to Opt Out of Property Tax Cap Powder Springs plans to opt out of a new voter-approved property tax cap, which limits annual home value increases to the previous year's inflation rate. Instead, the city offers a flat homestead assessment freeze, providing greater tax relief. This decision aligns with other local governments like Cobb County and the cities of Kennesaw and Marietta. To comply with Georgia law, Powder Springs will hold three public hearings before passing a resolution by March 1. The hearings are scheduled for February 3, 12, and 17 at the Patricia C. Vaughn Cultural Arts Center. Break: STORY 6: Driver Killed After Crashing into Austell Traffic Pole A man driving a white 2015 Maserati M157 was killed after crashing into a traffic signal pole in Austell on Tuesday morning. The incident occurred around 6:20 a.m. on East-West Connector at Felton Hill Road. The driver veered out of his lane, entered a right turn lane, and exited the roadway, hitting a traffic signal pole and control box. “Because we're such a mission driven organization, it is really important that we are bringing people in who want to make a difference in the world, who are excited about joining our mission and making an impact ”, says Sarah. “The people who are involved in that process are really committed to finding the people who are going to amplify the team the most and help us achieve our objectives."On the Insurance Coffee House Podcast this week, Sarah discusses her passion for leadership development and attracting talent to early-stage tech businesses. “I am a builder. I enjoy creating programs from scratch. Getting to know each person so we can design our programs and culture for the people who are in the organization.”Sarah gives insight into EvolutionIQ and how they use AI and machine-learning to sift data to support the business mission of supporting those with bodily injury claims.“Our mission and vision is to be able to revolutionize the industry of bodily injury claims. To become the leader in claims guidance by helping to improve the lives of sick and injured workers and enable them to return to the workforce. We try to accelerate that journey, to connect people with the resources and the attention that they need at pivotal points. We're primarily in short term disability, long term disability and workers compensation. We have really honed in on various points where you can help to essentially guide the claims adjusters and examiners to be able to look at those cases at the right time.”Sarah discusses how OKRs are used the goal-setting methodology at both leadership and company level. “That is where we really set our big challenging goals. The executives and leaders of the organization take personal responsibility for making sure that those are achieved. People are given very consistent feedback about where they can potentially improve. There is a really well laid out road map for how people can be successful and measure their performance. Our goal is to make sure every single person is able to see the impact that they're having and what their potential development and growth areas are. We really support that through ongoing conversations”Sarah shares how EvolutionIQ is balancing an ultra-high performance culture and building a culture of community. “We really do believe in people getting to know each other on a more personal level too. For anyone joining us remotely, we fly them in for the first week so they're able to really walk around the office, get to know other people cross functionally alongside their own teams. We try to create an extremely inclusive environment through regular events and company off-sites. Meaningful activities that we can essentially bond through. People also are able to pursue their own passions and interests and share that with other people in the organization.”Sarah gives her advice to insurance leaders coming for interview, citing authenticity and being clear on your purpose and fit within the organization. And she encourages her fellow people leaders within insurtech businesses to know what's needed for success. “Know your organization extremely well. Be able to identify the critical components, requirements and skills that are necessary today. You don't want to hire a bunch of replicas. You want to find people who have different skill sets and different perspectives, where you get a little bit more diversity of thought and diversity of contribution. That brings even greater value.” As closing advice, Sarah says, “One of the things we learned during the pandemic is that it can be challenging to have these separate worlds collide together. Looking at it as a holistic part of your life and figuring out how to get the most meaning and joy out of it as possible.”Connect with

Author and speaker Katie Schuermann and Stephanie Neugebauer talk about suffering and barrenness.  Katie describes how using gift language puts barren women in a position to be comforted by the Lord. God always promises to save the crushed in spirt and this truth drives her to the true source of comfort, Jesus Christ.  Visit Katie's website at  katieschuermann.com. Bio: Katie Schuermann's “earthy and joyful” voice is as refreshing and invigorating as the Midwestern sunshine in which she was raised. Writing in vignettes which so perfectly suit the charm of small-town life, Schuermann's stories call to mind the warmth and realism of Montgomery's Avonlea. Always leaning toward the arts, Schuermann earned graduate degrees in music. Her professional experiences are as varied and eclectic as any writer's, ranging from walking beans to singing with a Baroque orchestra to directing children's musical theater camps. No doubt, her cornfield roots and curriculum vitae factor heavily in her writing, but it is Schuermann's confession of faith in the Triune God that readers have come to expect and trust in her published works. When not writing, she can be found singing, gardening, cooking, holding babies, or trying to climb the nearest tree.

SANDCAST: Beach Volleyball with Tri Bourne and Travis Mewhirter

The voice is feeling good. “Oh, yeah,” Mark Schuermann confirmed on SANDCAST: Beach Volleyball with Tri Bourne and Travis Mewhirter, and if you’ve listened to the episode and just those two words, you can confirm it as well. The voice of the AVP is ready to go. In eight days, the AVP season will begin. Which means that in eight days, listeners, fans, and viewers will be treated to the majestic baritone of Mark Schuermann. To describe Schuermann as the emcee of the AVP would be a great disservice to both Schuermann and the AVP. He’s far more than that. He’s the emcee, yes. But he’s also an entertainer. A man of the people. A volley nerd who just so happens to be equipped with a magnificent voice, a natural knack for commentating, and a microphone that will keep all on stadium court more than pleased. That was the idea, anyway: He wanted to call the matches like the fan he was. So you’ll hear him react like a fan – “What just happened?” Say things fans say – “Taylor Crabb, you are ridiculous!” And he’ll do it among the fans themselves. Inexhaustible. Indefatigable. Ever-enthusiastic. “You don’t want to distract from what’s going on,” he said. “You want to enhance what’s going on.” It’s largely self-taught, too, his one-with-the-fan style of calling matches. At Cal State Northridge, after experimenting with majoring in math – “I like math, but nobody wants to do that much match,” he said – and anatomy, Schuermann enrolled in a broadcast journalism class. As it can often go with epiphanies, “I knew,” he said, “in the first three minutes that ‘Yes, this is what I want to do.’” A classroom, though, can only take you so far. Much of journalism, whether it be print or broadcast or entertainment, is experimentation. Finding what works for you. Discovering your own voice and style. It’s for that reason that Schuermann is glad he went to Northridge over USC, which offers one of the most prestigious journalism schools in the country. The advantage CSUN held over USC? The fact that, while it was a good program, it didn’t attract droves of prospective journalism majors. It allowed for Schuermann to create his own opportunities, such as when he began calling CSUN indoor matches. “Still some of the most fun I’ve ever had,” he said. “I’m not sure I would have been able to do that at the well-oiled machine that is USC. CSUN said ‘Oh, jeez, this kid wants to put on a show? Great! Let’s do it!’” It’s such a practical major. The more you’re willing to do something, the more they’ll get behind you.” So before he became the voice of the AVP, Mark Schuermann was the voice of all things CSUN: water polo, soccer, basketball, volleyball, “probably ten different sports,” he said. From there, the branches of networking and talent and willingness to create began to intertwine. While his peers took jobs in smaller markets, Schuermann stayed in the Los Angeles area, taking a menagerie of jobs calling sports at Harvard Westlake, a sports powerhouse in Los Angeles, calling USA Volleyball matches, calling professional indoor matches. One such match took him to a World League event in Tulsa, Oklahoma. “That was a big moment for me,” Schuermann said. “When I got to those matches, something I never planned, something I never expected to happen – it was the second day of matches, and I was sort of bored. I was announcing, somebody else was running the music, I wasn’t running the music, I was like ‘Yeah, this is volleyball, I’m calling the game, but what else can I do?’ So I turned around to my supervisor and I was like ‘Hey, I know all the players’ names, I have a wireless mic, can I go into the crowd?’ And she’s like ‘Yeah, sure, whatever.’ So I went into the crowd and announced the rest of the match that day in the crowd, and it was so much fun. That’s when I realized ‘I really want to do this. I really want to get into entertainment.’ I’d never seen anybody do this. I might be onto something here.” And thus Broadcast Mark came into his own. In eight days, should you be in the stands, or on the beach, in Huntington, you’ll find him right there with you. The only difference is that he has a mic, his reactions are heard all over the beach, and, well, he’s probably having more fun.

The Dover-Sherborn boys tennis team joins host Tommy Cassell in this episode.  Two seniors in Max Schuermann (No. 1 singles) and Lucas Minas (No. 2 singles), along with their coach Jon Kirby,  talk all things tennis. The Raiders finished the regular season with a 15-0 record and over their four years at D-S, Schuermann and Minas led their team to a 63-0 record in the regular season over that time span.  D-S lost in the Division 3 state championship in 2016, the sophomore season for both Schuermann and Minas, and fell in the Div. 3 state semifinals in 2015 and 2017. Needless to say, the Raiders have some unfinished business that is motivating them. The three D-S tennis team members and Cassell also discuss golf, swimming, DJing and many other things.  Cassell’s Corner Each week, Tommy Cassell of the MetroWest Daily and Milford Daily News will talk with a high school sports figure from the MetroWest and Milford areas.
