A conversation with Scott Bruce (Fordham University) about dragons, ancient, medieval, and early modern, from around the world. Where did our "canonical" image of the dragon come from? What other kinds of dragons existed? What did dragons mean in different cultures? The conversation is based on Scott's recent anthology, The Penguin Book of Dragons (2021), which has a chapter on Byzantine dragons.

Have you ever wanted to know the story of the origins of Tony the Tiger? That famous character that has become a household name in cereal for decades? The back story behind the changes in the advertising industry which ultimately led up to the creation of the cartoon character adorning cereal boxes is a very interesting one. In this episode I rely on the book 'Cerealizing America' which was published in 1995 by Scott Bruce and Bill Crawford covering the entire cereal industry and its formation. We live in the golden age of dragons – they appear in Game of Thrones, most film adaptations of the works of J.R.R. Tolkein, and nearly everything tangentially related to fantasy. They date back millennia, appearing in every cultures mythology, from ancient Greece and India to medieval Europe and China to the badlands of modern America. But what do they represent? Today's guest is Scott Bruce, a medievalist and author of the Penguin Book of Dragons. He's here to explain the meaning of dragons in myth and legend. We discuss their origins in the deserts of Africa; their struggles with their mortal enemies, elephants, in the jungles of South Asia; their fear of lightning; the world's first dragon slayer, in an ancient collection of Sanskrit hymns; the colossal sea monster Leviathan; the seven-headed “great red dragon” of the Book of Revelation; the Loch Ness monster; the dragon in Beowulf, who inspired Smaug in Tolkien's The Hobbit; the dragons in the prophecies of the wizard Merlin; a dragon saved from a centipede in Japan who gifts his human savior a magical bag of rice; the supernatural feathered serpent of ancient Mesoamerica; and a flatulent dragon the size of the Trojan Horse.Nearly a quarter of the selections are translated into English for the first time, from medieval European sources translated directly from the Latin, to medieval Greek stories. Bruce also dug deeply into obscure early modern and 19th century sources, like the reports of dragon sightings from two American newspapers around the turn of the 20th century.I'll conclude with a cautionary quote from Ursula K. Le Guin: “People who deny the existence of dragons are often eaten by dragons. From within.”

This is one of those weeks where Scott & Bruce just don't know where to turn the attention first. In local news, we had planned on commenting on the results of the April 5, 2021 City of Gardner (MA) finance committee meeting. A meeting in which a potentially flagrant conflict of interest arose when the city solicitors office recommended itself for a new contract with the city and its mayor, Mike Nicholson. Watch the meeting here And of course we have discussed it in this weeks episode.  But just in time for this recording news last night spread of former Mayor Mark Hawke's resignation as Town Manager of Westminster, MA to accede to the position of Business Manager for the Gardner Public Schools. Watch Latest Gardner School Committee Meeting. This from the same Mayor who quit 10 days after being re-elected in November of 2019.  The same mayor who stayed on to collect a city salary for another seven weeks before formally resigning in January of 2020. Yes, this is the same former mayor whose administration oversaw multiple complaints by Gardner Public School faculty and staff that went unaddressed during his tenure. And yes.... the same Mayor who quit as YOUR elected Mayor siting the salary in Gardner was not in keeping with competitive salaries of other similar elected officials in the commonwealth. We discuss what we know so far. In national news,  commentator Kevin Williamson published a piece in National Review last week justifying voter suppression by suggesting that “the republic would be better served by having fewer—but better—voters.” Representatives, he says, “are people who act in other people's interests,” which is different from doing what voters want. Interestingly enough, Henry Hammond, the South Carolina senator in the Antebellum Period and the same Henry Hammond known for sexual deviancy and for coining the term, 'Cotton is King' used the same argument in 1858 to justify the spread of slavery in Kansas, despite voters there voting to make Kansas a free state.  This created the ‘Bloody Kansas' episode that further propelled us into the Civil War.   We engage in an interesting discussion to unpack the idea of whether there is any credence to making it harder or easier to vote? If some of us could agree that voters should be better informed or educated, do we use exclusionary tactics for voters to make proof of their abilities or do we create robust public awareness and education a normal state for all citizens? Who can vote in the US has always evolved.  So how did that come to be and how can it inform us today?

Like so many Americans, I'm a big fan of the undead. I look forward to a night of nail-biting when a new episode of The Walking Dead airs and I get excited when Hollywood gears up for the next big-budget film featuring zombie hordes. I also love those rarer literary takes on the undead, such as Colson Whitehead's Zone One, and I even published my own riff on the genre entitled The Cliffs, which imagines what those familiar zombies might do in the Appalachian foothills where I live. If you share my enthusiasm for people not quite alive and not quite dead and, well, not quite people, you're in for a post-Halloween treat. Medieval historian and former grave-digger Scott Bruce has assembled an anthology of tales about the undead that shows were not alone. Readers have been fascinated by spirits, ghosts, apparitions, demons, and zombies since the start of Western literature. Bruce's anthology, The Penguin Book of the Undead: Fifteen Hundred Years of Supernatural Encounters (Penguin, 2016) begins with Homer's Odyssey and ends with Hamlet, but between those classic stories, he gives us selections from a vast and surprising range of sources: histories, hagiography, personal letters, theological treaties, sagas, and collections of miracles and marvels. In these selections, which are by turns fascinating, surprising, heartbreaking and sometimes freaky, the undead have never been so fresh, so lively. Learn more about your ad choices.
