Andy and Brendan have a lot to talk about for this Friday episode with the first round of the Cognizant proving to be a content bonanza. Billy Horschel was chasing alligators and criticizing the setup, PGA Tour Championship Management destroyed a once-proud event, and golf superstar Jake Knapp opened his week with a 59! The two discuss all of these topics and the storied history of The Honda Classic and remember how tough PGA National used to play. Andy shares the list of previous winners at the course and notes how many of them are top-tier legends of the game. Brendan rants about PGA Tour Championship Management overseeding the course and allowing the course record to be shattered on Thursday of the tournament. They briefly discuss the South African Open and HSBC Women's World Championship before diving into some golf news ahead of the weekend. Annika Sorenstam has thrown her support behind former Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott to take over as the LPGA commish, leading to all of the sports world mocking this idea. There's some debate about whether any worse choices are out there, and if there are, it's decided that there are very few. Andy announces that he's been invited to a watch party for the big LAGC vs. The Bay match on Monday morning Pacific Time and wonders if he should make an appearance. In Golf Advice, a late submission commiserates with Andy about Jake Knapp's 59 and an emailer asks for advice on an upcoming golf trip. To end this episode, PJ has a short Flashback Friday about the 1971 PGA Championship at the original PGA National, the first time the event was held in February.

On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back talking about a variety of USC football topics as the highly anticipated start of the 2023 college football season inches closer. The guys start off talking about how the Trojans have looked in fall camp so far, with Coach Hyde making it down to campus last week to check out the team. Coach likes to sit by the gate and eyeball the players as the emerge from the locker room, giving him a chance to size everyone up and compare the new players and see the body changes of the veteran players. He also likes the new vantage point the media has from over on the Dedeaux Field bleachers, giving us a chance to see more of what is happening on the field. It also allows us to see the offensive and defensive linemen up close (and Coach Hyde thinks the offensive line is much bigger than he has seen before). He also really likes the depth USC has for their offensive skill positions and still has some concerns about the inside linebacker spots. Next Coach and Ryan discuss the newly released preseason coaches poll where USC came in at No. 6. Some of the Trojans opponents and programs with tight USC connections are ranked including Washington at No. 11, Notre Dame at No. 13, Utah at No. 14 and Oregon at No. 15. USC's Cotton Bowl opponent Tulane is ranked No. 23, Steve Sarkisian and Texas are No. 12 and Lane Kiffin and Ole Miss are No. 22. The Trojans don't play Oregon State (No. 18) in the regular season but could face the Beavers in the final Pac-12 Championship Game. The guys final topic is on the death of the Pac-12 and the over 100 years of tradition ruined in large part by former commissioner Larry Scott and the Pac-12 presidents. Both Coach and Ryan think it is a sad day seeing the conference going down in flames like that (though many USC fans don't agree). The Trojans will be in a better spot for sure in the Big Ten, but losing some of those traditional rivals like Cal and Stanford will take a while to get used to. Pac 12 Crisis! Big 12 & Big Ten realignment? Florida State leaving ACC? Oregon & Washington next?

Winning Cures Everything

Pac-12 CrisisColorado Departure: The exit of Colorado has put the Pac-12 on shaky ground. Their departure to another conference was a significant loss that could've been mitigated with quick action, such as offering SMU an invitation.Media Rights Deal with Apple: The new media rights deal, primarily streaming through Apple+, is not favorable to the Pac-12. At $20M per school, with the potential to escalate based on subscriptions, it's a risk that many school presidents are reluctant to take, given the small fan bases on the west coast and the risk of not engaging casual fans.Past Failures: The comparison to the Larry Scott era and the failed Pac-12 Network that reached less than 15 million homes is apt. Why would they repeat a mistake that's already been made? The previous media venture failed to gain traction and was a financial disaster.Arizona Schools and Utah: The meeting between Arizona and Arizona State's Board of Regents to potentially leave the Pac-12 is a critical juncture. If they decide to leave, Utah might also follow, despite reluctance due to BYU. This will further decimate the conference.Big Ten Expansion?Interest in Pac-12 Schools: The Big Ten's consideration of adding Oregon, Washington, Stanford, and California is real. Oregon and Washington seem to be the more likely candidates, with financial considerations playing a role in who ultimately joins. The Notre Dame Factor: There is a potential play for Notre Dame, although that remains uncertain. A major player like Notre Dame could reshape the Big Ten's prospects.Financial Considerations: FOX and other networks like NBC or ESPN might be willing to take on the additional costs of these new schools. It adds inventory for FS1, but there are also potential options with Amazon or providing NBC more exclusivity.ACC and Florida StateFlorida State's Dilemma: Florida State is voicing dissatisfaction with the ACC's revenue distribution. The current deal with ESPN, made unanimously in 2016, has not panned out as expected, with declining cable viewership.Public Statements: The public nature of these grievances suggests a real desire to leave the ACC. It's a move that can affect recruiting and the overall perception of the program. If they do not have an exit plan, this could turn into a fiasco.Grant of Rights Obstacle: The legal hurdles to overcome the ACC's grant of rights through 2036 are significant. It's unclear how Florida State can navigate this without a hefty buyout and legal maneuvering.ConclusionThe shifting landscape of college football is creating a whirlpool of uncertainty, strategic moves, and alliances. The Pac-12's fragile state is at the center of this, with decisions by the Arizona schools and potentially Utah set to create significant ramifications. The Big Ten's expansion interest is real and could reshape the power dynamics in college football. Meanwhile, Florida State's very public discontent with the ACC adds another layer of complexity to this multifaceted situation.Ultimately, it is a dance between money, visibility, tradition, and legal agreements. The coming weeks and months are likely to be filled with more surprises, negotiations, and perhaps even some unprecedented moves.0:00 Introduction3:00 Pac 12 Crisis8:53 Big Ten expansion?15:08 Florida State leaving the ACC?Watch on YouTube: ----------WCE is powered by BetUS!  https://bit.ly/3TLHn2X

On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back after a brief hiatus talking about the USC Trojans getting ready to kick off the highly anticipated 2023 college football season, the second year under head coach Lincoln Riley. The Trojans return Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Caleb Williams, a ton of skill talent and a suspect defense that added a lot of new pieces during the off-season. The guys start off talking about how the Trojans were well represented in Las Vegas for Pac-12 Media Day with Riley, Williams and Oklahoma State transfer linebacker Mason Cobb. Overall Coach Hyde didn't feel like the Pac-12 did a good job of propping up what should be a strong conference this season. He felt like there wasn't any positive news and there was no strong leadership showing that would help produce more Pac-12 pride. Speaking of the Pac-12, there was plenty of "unity" talk coming on media day only to have Colorado bolt for the Big 12 just a few days later. Coach Hyde talks about all of the movement with the CU athletic program in hiring Coach Prime, a complete flip of the roster through the NCAA Transfer Portal and now switching conference affiliations. Coach feels like this Pac-12 is to blame for USC, UCLA and now Colorado leaving, going back to how things were run under Larry Scott and the conference presidents and chancellors. They also discuss last week's USC Media Day that gave everyone an opportunity to interview all of the assistant coaches and a few dozen prominent players about their off-season, getting ready for fall camp and of course the upcoming season. And they talk about what day one of USC fall camp was like, with an early morning workout that was over on Dedeaux Field. Coach Hyde loves to check out the early practices because it gives him an opportunity to eyeball the players up close and get a feel for how they have developed over the off-season.
