November is Native American Heritage Month - a time to celebrate the beauty of indigenous cultures. Not only do we recognize the tremendous positive significance of Native people in this country, but we also remember the mistreatment of Native communities that continue to fight for recognition, equality, and peace. We recognize that parts of the Hillsboro School District are located on the traditional lands of the Atfalati Kalapuya, the indigenous people of this area. According to Kalapuya tradition, the people were created here, and they have lived here since time immemorial. Indigenous people still live here today, having persevered through war, displacement, genocide, and oppression. We humbly honor the ancestors of the indigenous peoples for being the original stewards and protectors of this land. We want to take this opportunity to recognize and highlight the rich and diverse cultures of Native American, Alaska Native, and Indigenous communities this month and beyond. Visibility Saves Lives (Visibilidad Salva Vidas) can be seen as the first step to establish and maintain relationships with our Native students and staff. Our educators have access to lessons and resources to help them integrate and elevate Native American, Alaska Native, and Indigenous cultures year-round. Visit our website for information about related events taking place throughout November. Our featured staff member is Glencoe High School special education assistant and Unified Sports coach, William Johnson. All of our HSD staff members are great, but some truly go above and beyond to the point where they could justifiably be called heroes. Such is the case for William, who is also known as “Maverick.” He has been volunteering with a disaster relief organization called Team Rubicon for the past seven years. Over the course of his service, he has been deployed more than 30 times to support communities all over the country in their recovery efforts after hurricanes, wildfires, floods, and other emergencies. Read more about Maverick's volunteer journey in his own words, and join us in saying: way to go, Maverick - you make us Proud to be HSD! First quarter ends on Thursday, October 31, and there will be no school for all students on Friday, November 1, as teachers have a work day and prepare grades. School resumes on Monday, November 4. Hot News is produced and emailed to HSD families and staff each week school is in session. Please add the address to your “safe sender” list to make sure you always receive the latest issue. Please also bookmark our district website: hsd.k12.or.us to stay informed about what's happening in our district and schools.
Episode 21 - Murdock and Marvel: 1983 This year things really start to accelerate in the comics world, as the direct market kicks into high gear. Marvel leads the way again, with a truly astounding number of new books. Welcome to the crazy years, folks. Its time to talk 1983. Convergence Con: https://www.convergence-con.org/ The Year in Comics Notable and Newsworthy Industry Trends Eagle Awards Dan's Favorite The Year in Marvel Events & Happenings New Titles New Characters Series Ending Who's in the Bullpen ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: Paul Neary Dan's Favorite The Year in Daredevil Appearances: Daredevil #190-201, Incredible Hulk #279, Marvel Two-in-One #96, Marvel Fanfare #7, Iron Man #169 and Fantastic Four #255 Writing credits: Frank Miller (190-91), Alan Brennert (192), Larry Hama (193), Denny O'Neil (194-201) Pencilers: Klaus Janson (190, 192-96), Frank Miller (191), Larry Hama and William Johnson (197), William Johnson (198-201) Inks: Klaus Janson (190, 192-96), Terry Austin (191), Larry Hama and Klaus Janson (197), Danny Bulanadi (198-201) The year starts with another Double Issue as DD, Widow and Stone race to keep the Hand from resurrecting Elektra; Unbeknownst to DD, Stone finishes the job the Hand started, and Elektra lives again. Daredevil visits Bullseye telling him a story about a recent client and how's he's questioning what he's doing. This amazing story is our spotlight story this week. Next, we have a story about kingpin trying to get Ben Urich under his thumb by using his wife's desire for a new house to turn Urich dirty; ultimately Ben must decide how best to be a good reporter, a good husband and a good man. DD is on the trail of some stolen missiles, and they lead him to a cruise ship and a traveling magician who doesn't know the gun she stole from a guard she killed at the heist doesn't work. Tarkington Brown, who works for the mayor, finds that he only has a few weeks to live, so he recruits some cops to form a criminal killing murder squad as his way of making a final contribution before he dies; While she is drunk at a party, Heather tells Tark that Matt is DD, and Tarkington sends his squad to take down the Man Without Fear. The incapacitated Bullseye is kidnapped from his hospital by mysterious Asian agents. In the process, they shoot a visiting Wolverine, who tries to intervene. When Daredevil investigates, a recuperated Wolverine insists that the two team up and work on the case which sends Daredevil to Honshu Japan (the largest island). There he meets up with Dark Wind's daughter, Yuriko, who offers to help Daredevil find Bullseye if he's able to help her save her love interest from the power sway of her father. We learn Dark wind took Bullseye to repair his paralyzed body with adamantium so he can kill a Japanese delegate he doesn't agree with. Now healed, Bullseye betrays Dark Wind and makes his way back to the States; while Yuriko kills her father to save DD's life. The 5-book story arc ends with Bullseye back in New York who is looking to get back on Kingpin's payroll as a hit man. Black Widow comes checking in on Daredevil and a climactic battle in an old arena Jack Murdock once wrestled in to try to make ends meet. After a lengthy battle, Daredevil looks to finish Bullseye once and for all but is stopped by an image of his father that reminds him who he is (which is not a killer). The year ends with someone takes a shot at Foggy, and a wounded Daredevil enlists the Black Widow's aid in trying to find out who is trying to kill his partner. Issue 201 cover is by John Byrne. You can find more about them and their music at https://pixabay.com/users/lesfm-22579021/. The Grand Comics Database: Dan uses custom queries against a downloadable copy of the GCD to construct his publisher, title and creator charts. Comichron: Our source for comic book sales data. Man Without Fear: Kuljit Mithra's Daredevil site contains a staggering collection of resources about our hero, including news, interviews and comic details. The American Comic Book Chronicles: Published by TwoMorrows, these volumes provide an excellent analysis of American comics through the years. Because these volumes break down comic history by year and decade they are a great place to get a basic orientation on what is happening across the comic industry at a particular point in time. Joshua and Jamie Do Daredevil: A fantastic podcast that does a deep-dive into Daredevil comics. This ran from 2018-2020, and covered most of the first volume of Daredevil, and was a fun way to get an in-depth look at each issue of Daredevil from 1-377. My Marvelous Year: This is a reading-club style podcast where Dave Buesing and friends chose important or interesting books from a particular year to read and discuss. This helped me remember some fun and crazy stories, and would be a great companion piece to Murdock and Marvel for those who want more comic-story-specific coverage. BOOKLIST The following books have been frequently used as reference while preparing summaries of the comic history segments of our show. Each and every one comes recommended by Dan for fans wanting to read more about it! Licari, Fabio and Marco Rizzo. Marvel: The First 80 Years: The True Story of a Pop-Culture Phenomenon. London: Titan Books, 2020. This book is sort of a mess, as the print quality is terrible, and Titan doesn't even credit the authors unless you check the fine print. It's like this was published by Marvel in the early 60s! But the information is good, and it is presented in an entertaining fashion. So its decent, but I would recommend you see if you can just borrow it from the library instead of purchasing. Wells, John. American Comic Book Chronicles: 1960-1964. Raleigh: Two Morrows, 2015. Not cheap, but a fantastic series that is informative and fun to read. Wright, Bradford. Comic Book Nation: The Transformation of Youth Culture in America. Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press, 2001. This is the revised edition. Marvel Year By Year: A Visual History. New York: DK Publishing, 2022. The academic in my rails at using information from any work that doesn't have an author credit, but this is a decent (if very surface) look at each year in the history of Timely / Marvel from 1939 to 2021. Cowsill, Alan et al. DC Comics Year by Year: A Visual History. New York: DK Publishing, 2010. Because its nice to occasionally take a peek at what the Distinguished Competition is up to. Dauber, Jeremy. American Comics: A History. New York, W.W. Norton & Company, 2022. An excellent, relatively compact history of the domestic comic industry from its 19th century origins through to recent 21st century developments. An excellent successor to Bradford Wright's Comic Book Nation.

Lithium Energy Ltd (ASX:LEL) executive chairman William Johnson sits down with Proactive's Jonathan Jackson to discuss the sale of its 90% stake in the Solaroz Lithium Brine Project in Argentina for up to US$63 million (~A$97 million). The binding Share Sale Agreement was made with CNGR Netherlands New Energy Technology B.V., a subsidiary of CNGR Advanced Material Co Ltd. This transaction values Lithium Energy's shares at A$0.865 each, a 79% and 52% premium over its three-month and one-month VWAP, respectively. Johnson notes that this decision followed a strategic review and multiple offers, reflecting significant value creation since the company's IPO in May 2021, when shares were priced at $0.20. The sale aims to eliminate development and funding risks and boost the company's cash reserves, enabling future investments in battery minerals. The board is also considering a potential shareholder distribution following the sale's completion. CNGR will pay a US$1.8 million deposit, with the remainder due as follows: US$53.7 million at completion, US$3 million held in escrow for two years, and US$4.5 million in deferred payments contingent on future lithium prices. The transaction includes selling Lithium Energy's shares in Solaroz S.A. and a loan assignment, with completion expected in the fourth quarter of 2024, pending shareholder and regulatory approvals. This sale is part of Lithium Energy's broader strategy to realign its investment focus within the battery minerals sector, following the completion of the Solaroz sale and the proposed spin-out and IPO of Axon Graphite Limited. #ProactiveInvestors #LithiumEnergy #ASX #LEL, #SolarozProject, #BatteryMinerals, #CNGRNetherlands, #LithiumSale, #ASX, #LithiumInvestment, #ShareSale, #MineralConcessions, #EnergySector, #StrategicSale, #IPO, #ShareholderValue, #InvestmentOpportunities, #PrecursorMaterials, #ArgentinianMining, #LithiumMarket, #CorporateStrategy, #TechnologyTransfer #invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews

Lithium Energy Ltd (ASX:LEL) chairman William Johnson speaks with Proactive soon after receiving strong spheronisation and purification test-work results of greater than 99.97% total graphitic carbon (TGC) using concentrate from Burke Graphite Project in northwest Queensland. These purification results described as "exceptional" were achieved with potentially low-cost, environmentally safer, non-hydrofluoric acid processes. The completed battery anode material (BAM) test-work has defined the process flowsheet requirements to produce high purity 99.97% TGC spheronised graphite material, which will be suitable as feedstock for the battery anode making (BAM) process. #ProactiveInvestors #LithiumEnergy #ASX #CriticalMinerals #Lithium #invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews

Today, we're talking about current funding, and we're also talking about how funding has not been equitable throughout the early childhood space. Today’s guests are Keami Harris, the Chief Equity and Strategy Officer at the Early Childhood Funders Collaborative, and Dr. William Johnson, the Director of Educational Strategy at the William Caspar Graustein Memorial Fund. We have allowed ourselves to be so far removed from the plain text of our Supreme Law of the Land that it's little wonder that the leftists among us feel that the interpretation of the Constitution must be based on statistics, polls, popular opinion, skewed studies and the criminal actions of evil people amongst us. This is readily seen in a recent CNN article that shows the panic on the left in the face of the Bruen decision.“On every occasion [of Constitutional interpretation] let us carry ourselves back to THE TIME when the Constitution was adopted, recollect THE SPIRIT manifested in the debates, and instead of trying [to force] what meaning may be squeezed out of THE TEXT, or invented against it, [instead let us] conform to THE PROBABLE one in which it was passed.”– Thomas Jefferson, excerpt from a letter to William Johnson, 12 June 1823Support the showDon't forget to catch Voice of the Blue podcast, hosted by Royce, and produced by the American Police Hall of Fame.Voice of the Blue (buzzsprout.com)
Some charming quotes this week from Democrats – including one current governor, one candidate for governor, and even the President of the United States - with regards to Republicans are worth a glance. “And we are here to say that the era of Trump, and Zeldin and Molinaro, just jump on a bus and head down to Florida where you belong, ok?” “Get out of town. Because you do not represent our values. You are not New Yorkers.” So said New York Governor Kathy Hochul to her Republican opponents. Democrat nominee for Florida governor Charlie Crist also chimed in. “Those who support the governor should stay with him and vote for him, and I don't want your vote.” “If you have that hate in your heart, keep it there!” Then there was President Biden himself on Monday. “It's not just Trump, it's the entire philosophy that underpins the — I'm going to say something, it's like semi-fascism.” “The MAGA Republicans don't just threaten our personal rights and economic security.” “They're a threat to our very democracy. They refuse to accept the will of the people. They embrace political violence. They don't believe in democracy.” But California's Air Resources Board announced this week that they are going to ban the sale of internal combustion engine vehicles by 2035. And according to an article by William Johnson at Teslerati.com, California's regulations are accepted in 14 other states and the District of Columbia, so 17 State Attorney Generals are suing in federal court to block the move. This is to say that we should not just read this news as being one state out of 50 having decided something for itself. California is not just one of the wealthiest and most influential states in the Union. It's also one of the biggest economies in the world, and 28% of these United States look to its regulatory board to set their standards, including Connecticut, Colorado, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington. This move comes as Ford just announced an $8,475 increase in the price of their 2023 Electric Mustang compared with the 2022 model immediately after the Biden administration announced an EV tax credit of $7500, citing “significant material cost increases” and “evolving market conditions.” An article at The Daily Wire by Zach Jewell reports “Materials such as cobalt, lithium, and nickel have become harder to get, with China dominating cobalt and lithium production. That, coupled with supply chain issues, resulted in the cost of raw materials for EV production doubling from March 2020 to May 2022." The government should not be centrally planning and paternalistically declaring that individual consumers are disallowed from buying the most inexpensive and dependable vehicles available. And central planning of this kind is exactly why we are right now seeing inflation at levels not seen in decades, and why we are seeing shortages of so many goods and materials across the economy in recent years where just previously there was an abundance. A doubling of costs for raw materials needed for EV production in just two years should lead us to ask how much more will they rise in the next dozen. And what are the economic and national security implications of China dominating global cobalt and lithium production, with America on what seems like a collision course with China over Taiwan? The real question cannot be limited to whether some of us want a clearer view of the mountains. Yet at the risk of seeming to gatekeep the conversation, I would recommend some books to study, and soon. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/support

Who was William Johnson? The high sheriff of the Oregon provincial government seemed to be living a double life. And his moonlighting appeared to be as a trader, using a colorful potion to subdue his trading partners, the local tribes. Is the legend of Blue Ruin true? And what can it teach us about life on the frontier, the fur trade, and our history?
On September 8, 1755, two armies clashed along the southern shore of Lake George in New York's Adirondack Mountains. The battle between William Johnson's force of colonial provincials and Mohawk allies and Baron de Dieskau's French and Native American army would decide who possessed the lower part of the strategic water highway system that connected New York City with Quebec. Join author and ERW historian Billy Griffith for a discussion about this crucial event in the early stages of the French and Indian War that can be considered one of the first true “American” victories against professional foreign troops.
