Hey folks, Ned here! You know how much we all want our kids and students to thrive, but sometimes, despite our best efforts, it feels like we're stuck in the same old patterns that just don't work. That's why I'm thrilled about today's episode. We're talking about the concept of student autonomy—why it's crucial for engagement, learning, and even mental health. And joining me is someone who's not just talking about change but making it happen: longtime educator and reformer Mike Nicholson.Mike has spent decades in education, from being a teacher to a superintendent to a consultant, and now he's working directly with schools to help them give students more meaningful control over their learning. We talk about what happens when students have more agency, the impact of constant micromanagement in schools, and how even small changes—like making homework optional—can lead to huge shifts. If you've ever wondered why student engagement drops as they move through school or how we can turn things around, this conversation is for you! Episode Highlights:[2:46] – Mike Nicholson's journey in education and why he's passionate about student autonomy.[4:42] – The shocking decline of student engagement as they progress through school.[6:44] – Why behaviorism (carrots and sticks) isn't working in education.[10:49] – What educators discover when they shadow students for a full school day.[14:23] – Would any adult willingly go through what we put students through?[22:04] – What school handbooks reveal about the culture of control in education.[33:09] – The case for making homework optional—especially in math![41:46] – A real-world example of a school successfully giving students more control.[45:51] – Shifting school from something kids "have to do" to something they want to do. Send us a textWhat we see on TikTok often starts on message boards in fringe groups then spills over into the mainstream. This is true of the Looksmaxxing social media trend that's been gaining more and more currency among teen boys. The goal of looksmaxxing is to meet a set of criteria for physical attractiveness, with a focus on the eyes, jawline, and physique and the ultimate currency is SMV, or Sexual Market Value. There are some really positive elements to the trend, but its originated in incel groups so there can be a dark underbelly that it's worth us parents knowing about, as Mike Nicholson https://www.progressivemasculinity.co.uk/is well aware. Only one in five of those who apply to the University of Cambridge is offered a place. Currently there is an admissions quota of at least 69% of places for state-educated pupils. Now, Cambridge is looking at using a more sophisticated set of measures, including whether an applicant has received free school meals and looking at individual exam results in the context of where their school is. Mike Nicholson, the director of admissions, told the BBC with many students achieving top grades, the university needed to make more subtle choices. Every university has to produce plans to show how they ensure fair and equal admissions for disadvantaged students. The Office for Students, which regulates England's universities, says it doesn't require a target for places for state pupils, but expected sustained work with schools by the most selective universities to raise the attainment of disadvantaged pupils. Cambridge has been criticised for recruiting almost half its students from London and the South East, including from grammar schools which have a more privileged intake. Boys and men who display a muscular physique that's 'ripped', or 'cut' get more likes and shares than other accounts on social media, so the algorithms behind the platforms are feeding a strong trend in muscle building amongst teen boys. But who ends up feeding the ravenously hungry, and is it all healthy? Louise has asked us for help with how to manage feeding her growing lad. Her son – who's 17 - goes to the gym to muscle-build five days a week and then expects her to provide him with the foods that go with his lifestyle. With the current financial climate, she says can't afford to provide him with all the food to match his gym needs. She expects him to ask if he wants to take food because some of it is earmarked for an evening meal or baking. Sometimes he asks, sometimes he just helps himself. She says they're continually falling out over this and she'd like some tips on how to deal with it. The term Bigorexia was raised during my interview with Mike Nicholson from Progressive Masculinity. It's used to describe a particular form of body dysmorphia and controlled eating that's hard to spot, because the people suffering look outwardly super-healthy. It's a growing issue, and little understood, so we decided to use this episode to talk about both problems and give you some ideas for how to tackle them. The term toxic masculinity has been gaining traction, and is often used to talk about the type of masculinity where men use dominance, violence and control to gain power and superiority over others. There's also been an increase in efforts to educate boys in how to talk more about their feelings. But with the rise of Incels, Andrew Tate, free porn, and pick up artists, you could be forgiven for wondering whether we're really making progress at all. So I contacted Mike Nicholson, Director of a programme called Progressive Masculinity. He goes into schools to talk to boys about masculinity. My key aim was to ask him more about how we as parents can better support our boys to develop a healthy style of masculinity. Mike Nicholson taught secondary school English in The UK for nearly two decades. During this time he worked as a mentor for many troubled boys and young men. These experiences prompted him to launch Progressive Masculinity in 2021: The program is Mike's effort to give young men the freedom and confidence to remove a stereotypical masculinity mask and, through open dialogue and practical activities, reconstruct a healthier and more open-minded understanding of what it can mean to be ‘a man'. Mike works with schools, young offenders institutes and football clubs. For more information: http://progressivemasculinity.co.uk/
In this episode of Your B-Side, you'll discover that Mike's passions and hobbies are a lot around Football (Soccer), that he has Tom Cruise on his TV screen definitely more often than he realizes it, that his honeymoon in Florida and Saint Lucia remains one of his most memorable trips, and that his anecdote is, of course, a football related one!Support the Show.Listen to all the episodes, rate and review us wherever you listen to your podcasts!--Écoute tous les épisodes, laisse nous une note et un commentaire partout où tu écoutes tes podcasts!Contact: Instagram (EN) Instagram (FR) TwitterLinkedinFacebookEmail: your.bside.podcast@gmail.com Credits: Jazzy Abstract, by BeatComa-Media

FOLLOW WITH VISUALS: https://getbehindthebillboard.com/2021/11/26/episode-32-mike-nicholsonWe'd heard so many good things about Mike over the years and seen his work at all the award shows, but our paths had never crossed. Until now. The pod was the perfect opportunity for Hugh and Dan to find out more about one of adlands most talented and nicest blokes. And he didn't disappoint (esp in the wardrobe department, the signature Hawaiian shirt setting a bright positive mood from the get-go) Mike's billboards are a masterclass in how to do great ooh. Brilliantly simple ideas distilled down to the absolute minimum (Heg would approve) art directed with craft and wit. There's not an inch of fat on his work. This is why it's so awarded and still looks so fresh today. Quick example - The Tunes 6 sheet:No headline, no endline, no website, no logo, no hashtag bollocks. No need.Just a plunger - made from 3 pack shots (3 packs!!! A client's dream!)That's it.The bare minimum. Written on placement, it's no surprise this was the work that got Mike hired at AMV.And set a theme of simplicity and graphic brilliance that coursed through his work ever since - either with initial partner Daryl Corps or later with Paul Pateman. As well as billboards we discussed Mike's various ECD jobs in the UK and abroad, his teaching work at the SCA and his bedroom wallpaper, which was up there with his Hawaiian Shirts. Thanks again Mike. Dan and Hugh loved it. #behindthebillboard #btb #posters #billboards #ooh #outdoor #amv #tbwa #museumofchildhood #tunes #dunloptyres #theeconomist #sca #johnsmiths
Well folks we all made it to Election Eve. We decided to call it 'Election-itis 2021' and we bring to you tales from the campaign trial, special 'interviews' from Gardner City Council President Lizzie Kazinskas and the Mega-Mayor himself Mike Nicholson. Of course, there's so much more. You'll find serious analysis of local and regional politics sandwiched in between our best effort at local political satire. We even managed an interview with local social media and civic phenom Paul Demeo and squeezed in the results of the election before signing off for the evening. And what of the election results? Not since the presentation of Al Capone's Vaults has anti-climactic endings been so phenomenal. Our own co-host Scott M. Graves received 776 votes...... and came in last place! Hanging chads? Not with this crack team of political hacks. We hope you enjoy.

This is one of those weeks where Scott & Bruce just don't know where to turn the attention first. In local news, we had planned on commenting on the results of the April 5, 2021 City of Gardner (MA) finance committee meeting. A meeting in which a potentially flagrant conflict of interest arose when the city solicitors office recommended itself for a new contract with the city and its mayor, Mike Nicholson. Watch the meeting here And of course we have discussed it in this weeks episode. But just in time for this recording news last night spread of former Mayor Mark Hawke's resignation as Town Manager of Westminster, MA to accede to the position of Business Manager for the Gardner Public Schools. Watch Latest Gardner School Committee Meeting. This from the same Mayor who quit 10 days after being re-elected in November of 2019. The same mayor who stayed on to collect a city salary for another seven weeks before formally resigning in January of 2020. Yes, this is the same former mayor whose administration oversaw multiple complaints by Gardner Public School faculty and staff that went unaddressed during his tenure. And yes.... the same Mayor who quit as YOUR elected Mayor siting the salary in Gardner was not in keeping with competitive salaries of other similar elected officials in the commonwealth. We discuss what we know so far. In national news, commentator Kevin Williamson published a piece in National Review last week justifying voter suppression by suggesting that “the republic would be better served by having fewer—but better—voters.” Representatives, he says, “are people who act in other people's interests,” which is different from doing what voters want. Interestingly enough, Henry Hammond, the South Carolina senator in the Antebellum Period and the same Henry Hammond known for sexual deviancy and for coining the term, 'Cotton is King' used the same argument in 1858 to justify the spread of slavery in Kansas, despite voters there voting to make Kansas a free state. This created the ‘Bloody Kansas' episode that further propelled us into the Civil War. We engage in an interesting discussion to unpack the idea of whether there is any credence to making it harder or easier to vote? If some of us could agree that voters should be better informed or educated, do we use exclusionary tactics for voters to make proof of their abilities or do we create robust public awareness and education a normal state for all citizens? Who can vote in the US has always evolved. So how did that come to be and how can it inform us today?
Check out our latest Chamber Live Chat with Mayor of Gardner Mike Nicholson. Thank you!
