It's hard to believe it's been a whole decade since we sat down on Ellie's sofa to record the first episode of the Scummy Mummies Podcast. But here we are, having survived premature childbirth, a shitty divorce and a global pandemic, still on the sofa, and better friends than ever. In this special anniversary episode, we reminisce about the good old days, and reflect on whether we should be grateful for the bad times too. We tackle some tricky questions - how bad do the catsuits REALLY smell? What's better to make with lemons than lemonade? And how much longer do we actually think we can get away with this bullshit? Tune in to find out. We play two games - an old favourite returns, and Helen introduces Guess the Guest, which makes Ellie get something in her eye. We finish with Scummy Mummy Confessions, for the 261st time. We have TWO fabulous sponsors for this special podcast! Thank you to Their Nibs and HotSquash - two London based fashion brands we LOVE. This year, we're celebrating eight years and 200 episodes of The Scummy Mummies Podcast. We had big plans for this ep: fizzy wine! A lovely guest! Lots of lols! A lucrative advertising deal! But then, because premature babies, surprise divorces and global pandemics just aren't enough curve balls, life decided to kick us another one. So we've ended up recording this episode with Helen dialling in from hospital, where she's looking after her poorly daughter. Thank you for all the kind words of support. We decided to go ahead and record something because so many people have been messaging us, and we wanted to share what's going on. And because we did want to mark 200 episodes in some way, even if we had to swap the fizzy wine and birthday cake for IV drips and M&S salads. Most of all, we want to say thank you to everyone who has listened and subscribed to the podcast, who has written us lovely reviews, who has sent us funny confessions, and shared messages of encouragement. We had no idea what response we would get when we started this nonsense back in 2013. We certainly didn't dream we'd still be doing this eight years on. You have kept us going, so thank you. Lots of love, Ellie and Helen x See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The Scummy Mummies Podcast has taken us to some exotic places - North London, Cardiff, Stacey Solomon's house. But this episode is extra special, because it was recorded in NEPAL! We spent a week there with the amazing charity Practical Action, who are working hard to improve the lives of people living in poverty. For the first part of this ep, we sat down with some mums from a remote mountain village to find out what their lives are like. We won't fanny about, so to speak - these women are telling real stories of incredibly tough things that have happened to them. There are discussions about miscarriage and baby loss, and some graphic descriptions of prolapse. We also talk about motherhood in general and find some things we have in common, and have a few laughs along the way. Then we talk to Archana and Abbie, who work for Practical Action, to find out what they're up to and how we can help. There's some chat about irrigation - not the colonic kind - and gravity ropeway pulley systems. More fun than it sounds. This is our fifth year of producing the podcast, which has always been free, and always will be. In all those 125 episodes, we have never asked you, our lovely listeners, for money, but we are asking now. Please give Practical Action some dosh. Maybe because, like us, you are immensely moved by hearing these women's stories. Or perhaps because you're a fan of the podcast, and fancy saying thanks. Think of it as buying us a drink, except you're giving the fiver you'd spend to people who need it more than we need Chardonnay. Having seen what this charity does firsthand, we are so keen to give them all our support. Massive thanks and love to anyone who wants to help us do that. So please, visit PracticalAction.org to donate. Follow them on Instagram @practical_action, on Twitter @practicalaction, and find them on Facebook. You'd be making us really, really happy. Thank you! Love Ellie and Helen xxxSmall print: we are very grateful to the wonderful Archana for acting as our translator. For brevity, we have cut down the sections of the audio that are in Nepali, as most of our listeners don't speak the language. But if you'd like to hear the full uncut version, just drop us a line. Anyone else get totally fed up with being encouraged to eat, drink and be merry all December and then told they have to diet and go to the gym as soon as we hit January 1st? It makes me really cross - the guilt that's laid on us for daring to enjoy ourselves at Christmas and the messages everywhere that we have to lose weight and be slimmer is so damaging.I've chatted lots about my feelings on body confidence on social media and my blog, so I thought it was really important to cover the issue here on the podcast. When I thought about who would be the perfect guest to have on, my mind kept coming back to one person: Helen Thorn. As one half of the comedy duo The Scummy Mummies, Helen wears a skin-tight gold catsuit on stage, and she recently started another Instagram account - Helen Wears A Size 18 - where she shows how fab she looks in various outfits. It's such a positive, inspiring account but also very real at the same time. So Helen and I got together and chatted about why she's so confident, how size 18 doesn't have to be something people try to slim down from and what fashion brands can do to be more inclusive of all sizes. You can subscribe and listen to the excellent Scummy Mummies Podcast here and check out their live dates too.Music: Epidemic Sound See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

‘We own our podcast and are very precious about it, even though there’s a sense of fun and silliness, we are serious about the quality of it and the jokes.’ Episode 13 of Podcast Divas puts, not one but, two ladies in the spotlight – Ellie Gibson and Helen Thorn of The Scummy Mummies Podcast – a popular fortnightly chat show for less-than-perfect parents, which regularly tops the kids and family category on iTunes in the UK. ‘We do like a cat suit – preferably gold lame.’ This was such a fun episode to record and I think you can tell that Helen and Ellie are both also stand-up comedians, in fact that’s how they met.  Listen to find out how they came to co-host the Scummy Mummies Podcast and much much more including:  Who’s tried a three way (we’re talking podcasting of course) Who wants to be scrummy, yummy or scummy The full story of how Helen and Ellie met The best way to cope with being a parent Why they started having guests on their show Finding a balance of silliness and seriousness How to deal with serious matters in an entertaining way The progression from trying to be a podcaster to being a natural The difference between podcasting and live shows How to feel like you’re just chatting to friends when recording your show The benefits of a multi platform approach How to get your posts on the Huffington Post The pros and cons of drinking on your show The need for discipline, self-honesty and ruthless editing Turning 2 hours of material into a 40 minute episode Why Ellie needs to keep editing the show The business side of podcasting Why do Ellie and Helen podcast What makes Helen cry at her laptop How using Acast for advertising works The advantage of a podcast subject with longevity  ‘Editing is like reading music.’ Microphones and editing Ellie uses Audacity to edit their show. Scummy Mummies started with a Blue Snowball microphone and recently upgraded to a Blue Yeti. ‘You feel like you’re chatting to friends and forget that the mic is on.’ Advice for Podcast Divas and potential Divas ‘Feel passionate about, and love what you’re doing.  Don’t just think oh there’s a niche or don’t try to predict what there’s a gap in the market for.  Just do what you really love and that will come across in what you say and who you interview.’ Helen ‘Edit it. It takes time and it’s a pain but as a listener, the podcasts I listen to are the ones that are nice and tight and edited. When it’s just people rambling on for two hours I can’t deal with it, I don’t have time for it – so edit. Be good’. Merry Christmas! It's the Scummy Mummies Podcast, with bells on (LITERALLY, thanks to amazing technical wizard Rob Sedgebeer, who made the theme tune all festive for us. Thanks Rob!) This episode was recorded two days before Ellie went into early labour, which is why she still talks about being pregnant in it! Her little boy, Joe, is doing great. Expect a new baby special next year.  We're joined by podcast favourites Nurse Jessie and Steve Hill, the latter being having been dragged away from a Christmas lunch. As such there's even more swearing in this episode and we couldn't be bothered to bleep it, so this isn't one to listen to with the kids around... We talk Christmas presents, ham, round robins and farting. Plus, Steve tells us his Joe Mangle story, and Helen has an interesting suggestion for what to do with a family tub of yoghurt. We get some great recommendations for summer reading and answer the age-old question of whether they have badgers in Australia. Plus there is a surprise cameo by another special guest.   Many thanks to the lovely people from the New Statesman who let us record in their backstage area. Sorry the sound quality's not so great - it's festival ambience,  innit. If you'd like to see the Scummy Mummies LIVE, we'll be at Camp Bestival this Friday 1 August, performing in the Guardian Literary... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
