Do you find yourself leaning too far into intuition and mindset—or too heavily into strategy and systems? What if your true power lies in integrating both? In today's episode, I'm unpacking a conversation that has been on my heart for some time: the beautiful intersection between spirituality and practicality in growing a coaching business. This is a topic I've seen come up time and time again—not just with my clients, but in my own journey as well. I'm exploring what happens when we over-index on either side—becoming too focused on mindset and energy without implementing, or too reliant on strategy without anchoring into deeper alignment. Through examples and lived experience, I'll show you how these two forces work best when they work together—and how real business growth happens when both are honored. If you've ever felt like you should be further along, or like you're constantly searching for the next big breakthrough, this episode will bring grounded clarity and powerful truth. Here's what you'll learn: Why both spiritual development and business strategy are essential to success How over-relying on one side can hold you back, no matter how intentional you are The real reason your marketing or sales system might not be working (yet) What a billion-dollar CEO taught me about blending clarity with consciousness How to discern when you need inner work vs. practical action Why specificity and implementation are the key to breakthrough results How our clients create record-breaking results by aligning both inner and outer growth Resources Mentioned: Learn more about working with me Apply to join our business growth containers designed for coaches ready to scale

Pascale  ----------------------- FULL TRANSCRIPT ----------------------- Welcome back, beautiful soul, to another episode of The Everyday Life Balance Show. Today, we'll dive into something that I know resonates with so many of you—those life-changing moments when you're standing at a crossroads, feeling completely stuck. I'm talking about navigating life's transitions, and I'll give you actionable steps and practical tools you can implement immediately. Let's break this down into three clear, unmistakable signs that you're at a turning point in your life and how to navigate through it gracefully. Sign #1: You Feel Lost and Confused About What's Next You know that nagging sensation when nothing makes sense anymore? When you stare at your life, it's like a puzzle with missing pieces. You don't know what path to follow. At a crossroads, it's common to experience a mental or emotional fog. You might be asking yourself questions like, "What am I meant to be doing next?" Or "Why does this no longer feel right?" This confusion isn't something to fear; it's actually a call for more clarity and alignment in your life. Here's your action plan: Get crystal clear about what your heart yearns for. 1.  Grab a notebook or journal right now 2.  List your life areas: Career, Health, Relationships, Finance, Personal Growth 3.  Rate each area from a scale 1-10 4.  Circle the lowest-scoring area That's your starting point. Allow some space for stillness so that the answers you seek begin to reveal themselves. Don't try to fix everything at once. Trust that you're not broken; you are becoming. Pick the one area that scored the least points and set three specific, measurable goals. For example, if it's your relationship, your goal might be to improve communication with your partner, do more activities together, and communicate more often with your family and friends. Whatever your action steps are, put them down on paper because what gets written gets done. Now that we've explored the feeling of confusion, let's move on to sign number two, which is equally powerful but often hidden—your inner craving for change even if you're not sure what that is yet. Sign #2: Your Inner Craving For Positive Change – Even If You're Not Sure What That Is Yet There comes a moment, quiet but insistent, when you realise that the life you've been living no longer fits who you're becoming. It might not be loud or dramatic – it might just be a subtle nudge, a whisper from within that says: "There's something more for you." Maybe your days feel repetitive, or your work no longer excites you. Being at a crossroads is a sign that you're growing. That deep sense of misalignment is your inner wisdom calling you toward a life that reflects your next level of growth. You're like a butterfly ready to break free from that cocoon, but maybe you're a little scared of spreading your wings. And guess what? We expect uncertainty. Here is the truth: change isn't always easy, no matter how simple it seems. As creatures of habit, we love our comfort zones, like I love a delicious matcha tea. Trust that something beautiful is unfolding, and here's your three-step implementation strategy that really works: 1. Audit your current habits: Track everything you do for three days 2. Identify what works and doesn't – what brings you joy? what feels heavy? 3. Create a specific replacement plan for each habit that doesn't serve you. Here are some tips regarding change management: Tip#1: Positive change requires consistent effort, therefore you need to block out specific times in your calendar Tip #2: You need accountability - find a partner or join a group Tip #3: Track your progress daily - use a habit-tracking app or simple spreadsheet Tip #4: Plan for obstacles - create if-then scenarios for common challenges Tip #5: Transformation begins with awareness, and awareness leads to inspired action. And lastly, Sign #3: You've Lost Your Sense of Purpose This last sign hits us deeply—you feel like your life has lost its meaning. You look in the mirror and barely recognise that person staring back at you. Where did that sparkly-eyed, enthusiastic version of you go? They're still there, trust me. They're just waiting for you to dig a little deeper into your essence and come back triumphant. The concrete actions you need to take are to reconnect with your purpose, passion, and mojo! Place your hand on your heart, take a deep breath, and ask yourself: What part of me is longing for more ease, joy, and authenticity? 1st task – Do a skills inventory: ·     List everything you're good at ·     Note what people compliment you on ·     Identify what gets you in flow. What can you do for hours without getting tired? 2nd task -  Assess Your Values ·     Write down your top five values ·     Rate how well your current life aligns with each ·     Create specific actions to increase alignment 3rd task -  Create an Implementation Timeline: Week 1: Allow some time for self-exploration Week 2: Test one new activity that aligns with your top values Week 3: Evaluate and adjust your performance Week 4: Commit to regular practice Remember, this isn't about perfection but consistent progress. Start with a tiny change today. Open your calendar now and block out 30 minutes for your first action step. Being at a turning point isn't a crisis; it's an invitation. While things may seem uncertain right now, it's an invitation to clarify your values, re-ignite your dreams, and make empowered decisions that honour who you are becoming. Before we wrap up this episode, could you do something for me? If you feel you're at a crossroads, take a moment to ask yourself: ·     “Who do I need to be to create the life I desire?” ·     “Where am I called to grow, even if I can't see the full path yet?” You don't need to have all the answers today. Just take the next gentle step with loving intention. If your heart whispered 'yes' during this episode, I invite you to share this message with someone who may also be standing at a crossroads. Let's rise together! Until next time, I'm sending you lots of love and light.

This conversation looks into the escalating challenge – that climate change and poverty increase gender based violence. Three experienced civil society, gender empowerment practitioners from leading NGO Practical Action join the Social Impact Pioneers' podcast to share the wealth of worrying insights and what we can do about it. Mariette Utamuvuna, Berthille Kampire and George Williams each bring first-hand experience of working with women, and men, in tough places. Be ready to learn about the impacts of living in refugee camps on the incidence of gender based and domestic violence. Our conversation opens with a powerful exploration of gender-based violence (GBV) as a fundamental human rights issue. We discuss the intricate ways in which gender inequality fuels poverty and injustice, emphasising the need for gender mainstreaming and transformative change. This conversation is not just about identifying problems but also about championing practical actions and strategies to empower women and engage men in the fight against GBV. Mariette, Berthille and George together also share inspiring stories from the field, highlighting successful interventions in refugee camps and communities affected by climate change. These stories illustrate the power of community involvement and the importance of addressing gender inequality in all aspects of development work. Join us as we explore the intersections of gender-based violence, climate, resilience, and practical action. Whether you're a professional in the field, an interested listener, or someone looking for ways to make a difference, this episode offers valuable perspectives and solutions for a more equitable and sustainable world. The practice of international development continues to change as more is understood about what works. A shift from a deficit or problem-solving approach to a strengths-based approach is a significant reframing for international development. A strengths-based approach aims to reveal assets, strengths or what is working within an individual, group, community or organization, then uses these strengths as a way to achieve change and preferred futures. Reframing Aid: A Strengths-Based Approach for International Development (Practical Action, 2023) by Dr. Keren Winterford, Deborah Rhodes, and Christopher Dureau sets out the thinking, practical action and evidence-base to inform a sector-wide transformation. For many, this is a radical or even revolutionary shift, but for others, the writing is already on the wall. The authors set out the strong theoretical and practical basis of a strengths-based approach; explore insight through the lens on power, culture and psychology; and provide examples of how the approach is already applied in practice within the project cycle, monitoring and evaluation, dominant current approaches and sectors of international development. The theory and rich descriptions of how a strengths-based approach works, will give development workers, governments, researchers, policy makers and donors in the global north and south the confidence to continue or try new this approach to creating change. These fresh perspectives offer a much-needed alternative to the deficit-based/problem solving paradigm that dominates, but is no longer relevant to shared global efforts for social justice and environmental sustainability. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose doctoral work focused on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Climate change - which the United Nations defines as long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns - is a growing global problem, particularly for farmers. A recent UN report found agricultural productivity growth in Africa has decreased by 34 percent since 1961. That's more than any other region in the world. Michael Kaloki takes a road trip around Kenya, speaking to farmers about their struggles to grow crops with the increasingly unpredictable weather. He asks Rachel Bezner Kerr, a professor at the Department of Global Development at Cornell University in the United States why climate change is happening and what the future holds. He visits the organisations that are trying to help farmers adapt to climate change. Dr Ivan Rwomushana, from the non-profit inter-governmental organisation CABI, and Oliver Furechi from the charity Practical Action tell him what strategies and solutions they're teaching farmers. Power for refugees is a new two-part podcast on the Undercurrents podcast feed. Over two episodes Ben explores an often-overlooked aspect of humanitarian assistance: access to energy. From Afghanistan to Ukraine to Sudan - the world is grappling with the consequences that emerge when people are forced to flee from their homes. One factor that does not usually make the headlines is that many people displaced by conflict or natural disasters lack access to the energy services that are necessary for forging dignified lives and livelihoods.  This second episode examines efforts to provide alternative fuel for cooking in displaced settings in Kenya, Niger and Rwanda, shedding light on what has worked and what has not. Approximately 81% of refugees rely on basic fuels like wood for cooking. This brings about major difficulties for refugees and the environment, such as illness-inducing fumes from burning wood, the threat of violence to the women and girls who travel often long distances to collect wood, and deforestation. Since 2015, Chatham House has been researching this issue and convening dialogues to spur action by humanitarians, energy companies and others. Our seminal Heat, Light and Power report provided the first ever comprehensive assessment of access to energy in refugee camps and urban areas with high numbers of refugees. This two-part podcast is part of the Renewable Energy for Refugees project. Led by Practical Action, the project provides access to affordable and sustainable sources of renewable energy, and improves the health, wellbeing and security of refugees and neighbouring communities. In this episode I go into a discussion about the political, social, and economic placement we as working class people seem to find ourselves in today, not simply in the US but in some sense around the world. We are all hurting in a very similar way, added onto by our own individual struggles or difficulties we might face because of the color of our skin, our gender, our ability or willingness to be taken advantage of, etc. We are all suffering very difficult situations which none of us can take on alone, but if we want to do something about these things, we can't just pick up a gun and go, we'll be killed, or most likely arrested at the very least. Can a movement be built from within the concentration camps' walls? Surely. But it cannot be expected that the pigs and the press will allow such a thing to translate OUTSIDE of those walls; George Jackson tried, Mumia Abu Jamal is trying, Leonard Peltier is trying, and we must be their support outside of these prison camps!

During this podcast Evalyne Akoth, whose farm is in Kisumu County, Kenya – shares her perspectives on mixed regenerative farming; climate change; and getting young people into farming for the future. During our conversation we are joined by Practical Action's CEO, Sarah Roberts and Oliver Furechi – the project manager who has been working with Evalyne in Kenya. Together they discuss why innovations in finance and payments for conservation are needed; how NGOs such as Practical Action can help bridge the gaps between bigger businesses and small holder farmers; and what advocating for those hardest hit by climate change really means. This conversation is not about handouts or aid. Evalyne challenges herself and other farmers to step up to the challenges of diversifying and deepening her resilience. She is positive and determined and should be listened to. This podcast forms part of a short series on putting people at the heart of climate action and what Climate Justice can mean for business. BEING A CHURCHWhat is church? What true church of Jesus Christ looks like? It is undeniable that there are various kinds of churches today. There are TWO CATEGORIES of CHURCH.1)   VISIBLE CHURCH: is characterized by what tangible. What we see which is the building and its organization. Its unique ceremonial practices and organizational system. 2)   INVISIBLE CHURCH: refers to the fellowship of all believers throughout ages from all places and all peoples. The keyword here is the PEOPLE. Not the building. Nor the organizational system. THE PEOPLE. THE BELIEVERS who have and display a sense of UNITY and COMMUNION as the REDEEMED. Sinner who are JUSTIFIED and SANCTIFIED by the BLOOD OF JESUS. This is the CHURCH. The PEOPLE who have responded to God's saving grace. What true church of Jesus Christ is about and looks like?CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST:1)   IS A FELLOWSHIP & COMMUNION OF ALL BELIEVERSChurch, in Greek Word, EKKLESIA. It's a combination of EK and KALEO. EK means “OUT OF” “OUT FROM” and KALEO means “CALLED” “SUMMONED”. Ekklesia means “the Called-Out Ones”.  If Church is defined as the “Called-Out Ones”. Logically, we ask … call out from what?  1)     The believers are called out from DEATH to LIFE (Eph 2:1-10). 2)     The believers are out from DARKNESS to LIGHT (1 Pet 2:9). 3)   The believers are called out from IMPURE TO A HOLY LIVING (1 Thess 4:7 ; 2 Tim 1:9). 4)     The believers are called out from satan's kingdom into GOD's KINGDOM (Col 1:13-14). 5)     The believers are called out from slavery of sin to be A CHILD OF GOD and BRIDE OF CHRIST (John 1:12, Gal 3:26)As a body of Christ, CHURCH AS A COMMUNITY OF BELIEVERS EXIST TO: #1 LOVE ONE ANOTHER. Jesus commanded this very clearly, “This is my command: Love each other” (John 15:17). Simply love is THOUGHTFUL & PRACTICAL ACTION. TO DO UNTO OTHERS AS YOU WOULD WANT THEM TO TREAT YOU (Mat 7:12) #2. As a body of Christ, CHURCH AS A COMMUNITY OF BELIEVERS EXIST TO ENCOURAGE ONE ANOTHER. Hebrews 10:25 says, “Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another – and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST:2)  TEACHES JESUS' MESSAGE EXCLUSIVELY & FAITHFULLY In Matthew 28:18-20, in what is known to be the Great Commission, Jesus said, “18 …, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. 19Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 19and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded You. And surely I am with You always, to the very end of the age.”CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST MUST TEACH JESUS' MESSAGES AS EXLCUSIVELY, PURELY & FAITHFULLY!  The believers' heart need to be directed toward THE NEW HEAVEN THE NEW EARTH. HOPE IN THE LIFE TO COME.  CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST:3)  PREPARES THE BELIEVERS TO THE RETURNING OF THE LORD Church has a prime task and responsibility – which is DISCIPLESHIP. Church does not aim to merely gather crowds. Nor just to build fanbase. Church of Jesus Christ aims to disciple people to be Christ's people or the Kingdom citizen. These are the people whose character is reflecting Christ. This objective is superior above all others.   The more mature we are in our knowledge of God, the simpler our philosophy of life will be.

In true meditation, you experience a deep state of oneness. You know that all things are part of a vast, interrelated cosmic whole. Love becomes more than an emotion. It becomes something universal, impersonal and unconditional. Putting this into action is what service to others is really about. But even if you haven't experienced this awesome mystical state, any decent person can see that service is the right thing to do. Think about the compassion that motivates you to help others in need. It's as natural as your right hand working together with your left hand to help your whole being. The more we demonstrate this love we feel for others, through service, the more we will reinforce this dawning realization of oneness within ourselves. In this podcast episode Richard talks about love, service and spiritual development. What can we do to help others? How does selfless service help us to awaken our higher chakras? (September 5, 2021) Deacon Alex Bogdanoff, of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, invited us to reflect on our practical everyday lives: Is your life centered on seeing the less-fortunate ones through God's eyes? Do you walk an extra mile as a servant of our Lord helping the less-fortunate? How can we give "happy meals"  to those in our lives who need our help? he asked. The answer is close at hand. It is a simple truth: "Love looks like action:  You can have the best of intentions in your heart, but if you do not do anything, perhaps you want to question how deep your love is," Deacon Bogdanoff said.

Practical Action is an innovative international development organisation; their Patron is Prince Charles, HRH The Prince of Wales, and they partner with diverse organisations including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the IKEA Foundation and DFID – the UK’s Department for International Development.   The organisation is comprised of various entities, which include a charity running projects internationally, a publishing company and a consulting company as well – together they work hard to find ingenious solutions, capture and share learnings, and to bring about big change.   Practical Action works in about 12 countries at any one time. In total they have 600 staff and partner with many organisations. Their operating budget for charitable actives is about £30m annually.   They’re a very practical organisation and focus on farming that works; energy that transforms people’s lives; helping to build resilience; and making urban centres safer places for people to live in – particularly looking at water sanitation.   The thrust of the conversation with Paul revolved around Practical Action’s work in Bangladesh (where they have a team of approximately 100 staff) as it pertains to water sanitation.   Paul is a water and sanitation engineer – so he gets very excited about this topic.  He’s not shy to say that in the case of their water sanitation project work in Bangladesh, essentially, “we’re talking about poo”.   They’ve been working with marginalised, urban communities in slum areas in towns and cities around Bangladesh and helping them to improve their living conditions.  Again, in his candid manner, Paul notes that a particular problem is “the problem of shit”.  Many people have access to a latrine, which people use as their toilet – but the challenge they found was that emptying the latrines was a huge problem.   Across the whole of Bangladesh, something along the lines of 80,000 tonnes of human waste is produced every day, and over 90% of it remains untreated.  What happens often is that emptying these latrines becomes the task of informal waste workers, literally emptying pits by hand and disposing of the sludge in open watercourses. We’re talking about something that fills the equivalent of 30 Olympic swimming pools every day.   This poses a terrible health threat to people living in these areas. The total population of Bangladesh is around 160 million people; of which perhaps 40% are living under the poverty level.  Safe sanitation is a matter for the whole population – not just those living in slums.   Practical Action focused on developing a market system for sludge, working across the board with diverse stakeholders, including micro finance outfits, government representatives and foundations.   They tried to answer the question of: How do you get these pits emptied in a safe and reliable way?   Practical Action’s solution turned this activity into a business, in a sustainable way – in partnership with a broad range of actors, developing a workforce and turning sludge into fertiliser.   They worked with municipalities to license operators; they developed an app so city dwellers could order this service and leave feedback for a job well done.  In turn, service providers got decent pay - and so the market works.   Their work started approximately 10 years ago, when they were working with WaterAid.  They could see that while latrine coverage in the country was going up, the problem of sludge was not actually being addressed.  So, they started piloting urban-based sewage treatment systems and things have progressed very well since then.   Paul also sheds light on his career trajectory.  He’s an engineer by background and at the start of his career was working in the construction industry in the UK. In his 20s he took a posting with VSO (Voluntary Service Overseas) to work in Sudan and he found this experience highly stimulating and full of purpose. He learned much and shifted from a traditional career path, from what he classifies as a construction engineer, in order to become a development engineer.   Paul’s key takeaway: It’s all about the team. If you have a motivated team that is ready and willing to work together for a common purpose, then you’re powerful!   Visit The Do One Better! Over the last decade, you've undoubtedly seen both Sam Hargrave and his work without even knowing it. In fifteen years, he has racked up 80 credits working as either a stunt performer or stunt coordinator in both television and film. He's doubled for Hugh Jackman, Chris Evans, and Justin Timberlake, along with many others; and is responsible for staging some of the biggest and most exciting action sequences in recent years. Hargrave served as a stunt coordinator on "Avengers: Endgame," "Deadpool 2," "Captain America: Civil War," "Atomic Blonde," and all but the first film in the "Hunger Games" franchise, just to name a few. While stunt performance allowed Hargrave to make a name for himself, his true passion always lied with directing. In April, he was finally able to turn that passion into a reality with his directorial debut with "Extraction." "Extraction" is a Netflix Original action film written by Joe Russo, produced by the Russo Brothers, and starring Chris Hemsworth and David Harbour. The film tells the story of a mercenary sent in to extricate the son of an international crime lord from the clutches of kidnappers. When Hemsworth's character (Tyler Rake) is double-crossed, he faces enemies on all sides as he battles to protect the boy and escape town. "Extraction" was an instant hit for Netflix. According to the streaming service, the film "is well on its way to becoming the biggest-ever film premiere on Netflix — with a projected 90 million households getting in on the action in the first 4 weeks." The movie appears to have been the right movie at the right time. While movie theaters are shut down and virtually all theatrical releases have been postponed, Netflix offered an exciting action film produced by the directors of the biggest movie of the past decade, featuring one of today's leading men, and directed by one of the premier stunt coordinators in the business. People seemed more than willing to tune in. Perhaps much of this has to do with a yearning for more mid-budget action movies. The filmmaker himself even cited the works of Jackie Chan and John McTiernan along with "Rambo" as works that impacted his filmmaking sensibilities. During our conversation with director Sam Hargrave, we discussed not only "Extraction," its success, and the already announced sequel (and whether he'll be involved), but also action movies in general, as well as Netflix as a vessel for more niche films to be made and seen. We also learn what action films inspired him as a director and filmmaker, and find out what he has been watching while stuck at home during the pandemic. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theplaylist/message

This is part of one of a 3-part mini-series on last mile distribution. This series is a collaboration between the Finding Impact Podcast and the Global Distributors Collective (or the GDC). The GDC is a collective of over 140 last mile distribution companies around the world, which helps them reach underserved customers with life-changing products like solar lights, clean cookstoves, water filters, and sanitation and nutrition products. The GDC has two main pillars of activity: It provides services that help distributors save time and money, adopt best practices and facilitate new partnerships; and, It works to build a collective voice for and raise the profile of last mile distributors, and works with key stakeholders to help them better support the sector. The GDC is hosted by Practical Action with implementing partners Hystra and BoP Innovation Center. Visit the GDC's website at www.globaldistributorscollective.org to find out more. This episode with EcoFiltro, a distributor of water filters in Guatemala, focuses on how distributors can improve their sales efficiency by pivoting their distribution model. On this episode you'll learn: EcoFiltro started with a micro-consignment model in which they'd give hundreds of community entrepreneurs across Guatemala five filters to sell in their community, and they'd earn 10% on each sale. The model proved unsustainable due to the cost of pre-financing the filters which would often be paid back over two years, the cost of collecting the money from customers, and the low sales volumes achieved by community entrepreneurs. They tried a number of different things to try and improve sales, such as training, offering incentives and encouraging referrals, but all their efforts only yielded a few extra filters sold per month. They spent 18 months designing a new model, which involved speaking to retailers all across the country, and ultimately selected a few to be key distributors of the filter. Retailers were happy to sell it because the filter had a strong brand, since it had been sold for a long time in big shops in urban areas and received good PR from a school donation programme. Retailers were required to invest in 20 filters at a time for a $500 investment, so were motivated to recoup their investment. The school donation programme, where filters were donated to local schools, was channelled through the local retailers, so they received the attention and drove customers to buy from them locally. They now have around 100 local distributors and they're targeting 270 by June 1st, 2019, which will be about 20-25 distributors per sales agent. They've strengthened the brand by investing in their sales and marketing collateral, so all retailers are giving the same message to customers. Our guest for this episode is Ortis Deley, off of CBBC and The Gadget Show! He tells us about how he manages tech time in his house, the best and stupidest gadgets he's ever seen, and whether we really need a wet wipe warmer. We go behind the scenes on the Smash Hits Roadshow, and find out what happened the night Kerry met Brian. Ortis discusses how he feels about having a second child, and reveals his top mobile phone picks for 2019. There's also some charity chat as we talk about Practical Action and their new campaign Planting for Progress. The organisation is asking the UK public to donate and help poor Zimbabwean farmers double their harvests. Every pound donated before March 8 2019 will be matched pound for pound by the UK Government. Follow Practical Action @practical_action. We round off with a ludicrous new game, Techno or Tech Faux?, and of course our Scummy Mummy Confessions. The Scummy Mummies book is OUT NOW! The Scummy Mummies Podcast has taken us to some exotic places - North London, Cardiff, Stacey Solomon's house. But this episode is extra special, because it was recorded in NEPAL! We spent a week there with the amazing charity Practical Action, who are working hard to improve the lives of people living in poverty. For the first part of this ep, we sat down with some mums from a remote mountain village to find out what their lives are like. We won't fanny about, so to speak - these women are telling real stories of incredibly tough things that have happened to them. There are discussions about miscarriage and baby loss, and some graphic descriptions of prolapse. We also talk about motherhood in general and find some things we have in common, and have a few laughs along the way. Then we talk to Archana and Abbie, who work for Practical Action, to find out what they're up to and how we can help. There's some chat about irrigation - not the colonic kind - and gravity ropeway pulley systems. More fun than it sounds. This is our fifth year of producing the podcast, which has always been free, and always will be. In all those 125 episodes, we have never asked you, our lovely listeners, for money, but we are asking now. Please give Practical Action some dosh. Maybe because, like us, you are immensely moved by hearing these women's stories. Or perhaps because you're a fan of the podcast, and fancy saying thanks. Think of it as buying us a drink, except you're giving the fiver you'd spend to people who need it more than we need Chardonnay. Having seen what this charity does firsthand, we are so keen to give them all our support. Massive thanks and love to anyone who wants to help us do that. So please, visit PracticalAction.org to donate. Follow them on Instagram @practical_action, on Twitter @practicalaction, and find them on Facebook. You'd be making us really, really happy. Thank you! Love Ellie and Helen xxxSmall print: we are very grateful to the wonderful Archana for acting as our translator. For brevity, we have cut down the sections of the audio that are in Nepali, as most of our listeners don't speak the language. But if you'd like to hear the full uncut version, just drop us a line. BasicNeeds works in partnership with people living with mental illness.  Picture it. A young Chris Underhill and his wife are making their way out of a large hospital in Malawi where they have just been given wonderful news. They are expecting their first child. The year is 1969. The courtyard is filled with family members of hospital patients. Smoke from cooking fills the air. The hallways are crowded as the young is compelled forward, carried by their good news. As they round a corner, they come upon an unexpected scene. They find themselves confronted with a cage containing five men. The cage is surrounded by small children poking the men with sticks and taunting them. As Chris would later discover, this scene is far from uncommon for mental health patients in low-resource settings. This bittersweet moment compelled Chris Underhill into a life of service on behalf of mentally ill patients in low-resource settings. Globally, nearly six hundred million people suffer from mental illness. In low-income countries most are forced to suffer without help. BasicNeeds is working to improve the lives of people living with mental illness and epilepsy. They have developed a model of intervention that is effective, locally owned, can be replicated and is transferable. Since the year 2000, their programs have improved the lives of over 665,000 people living with mental illness and/or epilepsy, their caregivers and families.   Mental Health Quotes from Chris Underhill “At any one time, in the world there are at least 450 million people who are suffering from mental illness and who should be getting treatment.” “The treatments are available, and often they are not particularly expensive.” “It’s very common to see a mental health [treatment] gap of 85%.” “It is not uncommon for teams in the BasicNeeds family of organizations to find themselves in the presence of a person who has been illegally imprisoned.” “I was in the organization Practical Action, minding my own business, and getting on with being a chief executive of someone else’s organization…and someone knocked on the door…and he said ‘Have you got another organization in you?’” “This event came surging forward and became the thing that I wanted to do.” “We had a reasonable battery of skills which come under the title of capacity building, consultation, workshopping, and so on.” “If the first point was consultation, then the next point in the whole construction of this idea, was definitely partnership.” “You’ve got that capacity building bit, you’ve got that leadership bit, and you’ve got that local partnership bit. And those three things seem to be inherently sensible and probably were the products of a certain amount of experience.” “It always takes longer than you think.” “Don’t under-budget.” Social Entrepreneurship Resources: BasicNeeds: http://www.basicneeds.org BasicNeeds on Twitter: https://twitter.com/BasicNeedsIntl Chris Underhill on Twitter: https://twitter.com/ChrisBasicNeeds Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BasicNeedsIntl Thrive: http://thrive.org.uk Practical Action: http://practicalaction.org Mental Health Innovation Network: http://mhinnovation.net Voluntary Service Overseas: https://www.vsointernational.org Southwest Solutions: http://www.swsol.org

If you're like most people, you're probably listening to this podcast on a smartphone of some type - maybe your on your commute, or an after-work walk with the dog. Others will listen to it on their laptop or office desktop machine in the background as they perform some other task. When I talk about using technology, these types of examples are, what I believe, pops into most people's mind. And, rightly so. I can attest to the fact that, even in the most remote corners of Uganda, technology - as mobile devices and their applications - play a front and center role in the minds of everyone. But the term technology - the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes - extends far beyond smartphones and laptops. Technology can be as simple as a pulley system, a dam for a reservoir, or a hand cranked water pump. As amazing as it sounds, for a huge amount of people in the world today, these simple types of technology are not only breakthrough, they are the key to a hand up out of poverty through the efficiencies they bring. Paul Smith Lomas, my guest on today's 108th episode of the Terms of Reference podcast, not only thinks about how how the application of technology can help lift people out of poverty, but the organization he leads - Practical Action - actually pursue Technology Justice. That is, they seek to "create a world in which technology and innovation is used to end poverty and provide a sustainable future for everyone on our planet." Paul was appointed CEO of Practical Action in November 2015. Prior to this appointment, Paul was Practical Action's International Director, responsible for the overall operation of its programmes and policy influencing around the world. Paul's professional background is as a mechanical engineer. He worked originally in the water treatment industry in the UK, before going on a VSO assignment in 1985 to Eastern Sudan, where he set up water and sanitation systems for refugee populations from Eritrea & Ethiopia. He then worked with ActionAid in the Nuba Mountains, still focusing on public health engineering with rural communities. After a short spell in the commercial sector, Paul returned to the voluntary sector in 1991 as Technical Adviser for Oxfam, based in the UK. He was awarded an MBE for services to international development. Prior to joining Practical Action, Paul was the Regional Director for Oxfam in the Horn & Eastern Africa, where he managed a large programme covering development, campaigning, and emergency response.
