Today Elaine chats with director/writer Kelly Holmes. They discuss all things horror, the process of getting a film made and their love of cinema. Both Kelly and Elaine happened to be wearing the same t-shirt when they met via zoom. The brilliant Eat The Patriarchy tees from the great The Spark Company Kelly Holmes Director | Writer Kelly Holmes is inspired to make genre films that have a real emotional connection with her audience. She has developed an aesthetic approach to cinema, focussed on creating detailed worlds. Kelly is also interested in stories that push the boundaries of psychological reality and/or fit in her macabre view of the world. Her shorts have won multiple awards at international film festivals and she has received Creative England/BFI funding, Creative Skillset funding, the Rafford Scholarship, television commissions, and won prizes in competitions such as the Enter the Pitch, and has been chosen for talent development on several schemes including the Reykjavik International Film Festival Talent Lab and BFI Network X BAFTA Crew. Kelly has just completed her Creative England Emerging Talent/BFI and France 3 funded short ATTRITION, a WW1 supernatural drama set in the 1915 gas attacks. The film stars Edward Hogg (Taboo), Jack Roth (Bohemian Rhapsody), Lewis MacKinnon (Victoria) and Jack Parry-Jones (Our Girl). ATTRITION was broadcast on Armistice weekend on national French television in 2018. Her Scottish short FAMILY PORTRAIT, a Victorian family drama about death portrait photography won the Paris Courts Devant postproduction prize, including being broadcast 3 times on France 3 television. And it has screened in over 50 film festivals winning 12 international film awards. Kelly has also been mentored by director James Kent (Testament of Youth) and by director/writer Peter Strickland (Berberian Sound Studio, Duke of Burgandy) and also shadowed Douglas McKinnon (Doctor Who, Outlander) on Sherlock: The Abominable Bride. Kelly is attached to two feature scripts, the first a 1960s menopausal body horror in development with BFI Network, and second a dystopian plague drama set in the far north of Scotland. She is also in development with Blazing Griffin on a single TV drama based on a true-life story. She holds a BA and MA in Film Theory and MFA in Advanced Film Directing. The Cinematography Podcast Episode 76: Suzie Lavelle Irish cinematographer Suzie Lavelle loves to be very hands on and involved in visual storytelling. From a young age, Suzie had an interest in photography, went to art school and was accepted into the renowned National Film and Television School in London. She began working on short films and features, one of which, The Other Side of Sleep, was shown at the Cannes Film Festival. Shortly after, Suzie landed her first television job shooting an episode of Dr. Who Season 7, an amazing opportunity that led to a long career on large scale shows such as Vikings, His Dark Materials, A Discovery of Witches, and Sherlock. Sherlock: The Abominable Bride is a single 90-minute long episode which takes place during the Victorian era and Suzie was Emmy nominated for Best Cinematography. Suzie was excited to work with director and fellow countryman Lenny Abrahamson on the new Hulu series Normal People. Normal People is about the often rocky, romantic relationship between Marianne (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and Connell (Paul Mescal) who grew up in the same small town in Ireland. Abrahamson and Suzie worked together to create very beautiful, close up and intimate scenes between the actors, which required a small footprint, few lights and the use of a single handheld camera. Normal People is currently streaming on Hulu. We know how Donald opened Saints Row IV now! Like sands through the hourglass, so are the episodes of Nintendo Free Radio. Following a three week recording break, Stephen kicks off New Business with a couple of 71 follow-ups: Groove Coaster 2 and the further misadventures of Meg Ryan in Final Fantasy X HD(er). Donald then moves to follow up with a game he no longer owns as of publishing time, but he cedes to Stephen for most of a long Final Fantasy Explorersdiscussion. Donald picks up with his first GBA game on Wii U that he actually played, Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros 3.  Long name, but the e-Reader levels make it worth buying. After that, it's the return of the otome as we rewrite history with Code;Realize. Austen deals with a superstitious, cowardly lot in Assassin's Creed Syndicate - the last one of those we'll see for a while, sadly it means Watch Dogs 2 - before grabbing a couple of titles off PSN in The Deadly Tower of Monsters and Saturday Morning RPG. Also, we have our use of "The Touch" for 2016. Whatcha Watchin' comes out of the break with Donald dealing with a couple of murderous psychos in future Vita visual novel Psycho;Pass and a wrapup on Death Note. Stephen then gets a little investigation in with Rosewood and Elementary. Austen keeps the Baker Street express rolling with Sherlock: The Abominable Bride, before hitting every superhero show in the business. The first of a two-part Feature deals with something we didn't cover off last time; our personal 2016 hype trains. Some will get delayed, some may not work at all, and Donald makes the obvious pick for his #1. Then it's a news lightning round with EA out of E3, GameStop as game publisher and a Sony reorganization. In the Mushrooms, Stephen's Mushrooms get wildly hijacked while Donald casually invites a biological stain to commit a biologically impossible act. (Note that the second half is un-Pokemoned for a very particular reason.) We'll join you again shortly for a much shorter episode, but if there's something you want us to talk about when we record again, shoot us an email or leave it below. Also, keep an eye on our Twitter feed @nfrpodcast to find out when that next recording will be. This podcast was recorded on January 31 and was edited by Donald Theriault.

"an extraordinarily astute couple" [VALL]    Anyone who has been following Sherlock Holmes on television and in popular culture over the last five years or so should be familiar with the names and . Steven is showrunner, writer and producer for Sherlock and Doctor Who, and Sue is a producer of a number of programs, including Doctor Who and Sherlock, as well as of numerous British television comedies.   Steven and Sue met at the Edinburgh Television Festival in 1996 and joined Hartswood Films, where Steven wrote a comedy based on their budding relationship, which became Coupling. And it is their coupling on Sherlock that we speak with them.   On January 1, 2016, the world premiere of Sherlock: The Abominable Bride happens on BBC One and PBS. This is the first time the show has aired on the same day in both countries, and the excitement is palpable. The setting is London in 1895 and the trailers have shown a dark and mysterious atmosphere.   We take the time to discuss the making of show with Steven and Sue, as well as surprises, challenges and delights along the way. We ask the question everyone has been dying to know: how much longer will Sherlock go on? And we get an answer! We also learn a surprising fact about Sue (!) and get some great send-off advice from Steven, with much great information in between.   We have a dual feature for this episode's Gas-Lamp: an actual Editor's Gas-Lamp from Vol. 11, No. 4 (1961) called "Yes, Virginia, There Is a Sherlock Holmes" by Julian Wolff.
