This episode features a conversation with game designer, Matt Leacock. It was recorded in January 2024.Matt is best known as a designer of cooperative games, including Pandemic, Pandemic Legacy, Forbidden Island, and Daybreak. Pandemic, first published in 2008, has sold over 5 million copies worldwide and is available in over 30 languages. Matt's latest game, Daybreak challenges players to stop climate change. Amongst other things, Matt and I discussed the role of play in learning, the ways that games can help people understand and model complexity, and how increased interactivity can deepen audience engagement on climate issues.Photo by Owen Duffy.Additional links: Daybreak websiteDaybreak gameplay videoMatt Leacock websiteWashington Post climate warming guessing game

As pandemic-induced supports wind down and a European war causes inflation to rise further, will we see businesses facing closures? We are joined by Neil McDonnell, Chief Executive of ISME.
In Season 3, Episode 5 of REPOD, we sat down with Matt Leacock, best known for creating the Pandemic series of cooperative board games. There are several expansions for Pandemic as well as the Pandemic Legacy games, which are stand alone versions of the game with an interwoven narrative that affects the rules and mechanics of the game as you play. The Pandemic and Pandemic Legacy games share many commonalities with escape rooms, including cooperative gameplay, cinematic narrative structure, and gameplay mechanics that tie in closely to the theme. It was fascinating to hear Matt describe his game design process and how he approaches it from a user experience design standpoint. There is a dialogue between the theme and game mechanics where they impact each other iteratively. Pandemic Legacy is one of David's favorite board games, and if you love escape rooms, we think you'll love this game too. In this episode, Greg is joined by 4 special guests to reminisce about the games we played as kids. Even though I was unable to join the recording, I have given my list to him, though I know he will rag on it, so don't listen to anything he says, unless he surprises me and it's good stuff... then you can listen. One item of business I want to bring up before I hand things off to Greg because I know he will forget to mention it later is that due to the fact 3 of the 4 of us have to miss this episode, we are extending the deadline to sign up for our BGG contest to win a copy of Pandemic Legacy, Season 1. The new deadline is Noon EST on Saturday, June 5th. Mark, Jessica, and Katy will be back in 2 weeks.

Episode Fifteen - Return of the Game Night (What We Talk About) Jake and Brendan have a nice chat about returning to in-person play after so much time away. We welcome GM and boardgame guru Jay to this week's episode. We talk about different game systems, whether or not you can get the same experience from the same story in different rulesets, what kind of system you should think about when taking small groups, large groups, and/or inexperienced groups on adventures, and we end on some board game recommendations from our guest. We hit on Shadowrun, OVA, D&D 4e, 5e, Pathfinder, Dread, Call of Cthulu... we mention a lot. And, thanks to a heads-up from our listener Charlotte, we found out not all our platforms are translating our hyperlinks so you can get more information in our descriptions. Because they brought this to our attention, we'll start listing the full urls to important info. Thanks, Charlotte! It's our anniversary - we've been doing this podcast thing for a whole year! To celebrate, we're doing an episode on legacy games, and as a special treat for you (and for us!), we are joined by a very special guest - Rob Daviau, the man behind the legacy game craze (and a lot of other great games besides)! In this episode: Rob tells us about the original inspirations behind Risk Legacy, the person who knew that Pandemic Legacy would be a trilogy before Season 1 was even published, and the brand new Machi Koro Legacy, available right now at Gen Con! We talk about some of Rob's non-Legacy games too, such as the forthcoming Return to Dark Tower! Joe offers such thoughtful gaming insights as "If you lose, you don't win" and "At the end, there's one winner, and that person wins." We learn how to play Six Degrees of Frank Branham. We discover that, thanks to Joe, we've been playing legacy games all along. Legacy games are susceptible to spoilers, but this is a spoiler-free episode. You can find some additional short files with spoiler content for various games here, but the main episode is safe for all (except for the occasional grownup word). Also, there are some new options on the future episodes poll - please let us know what you'd like to hear us talk about! Thank you for listening!
