A micro-genre/movement/what have you that I've been doing my hardest to champion this year at Nine Circles is "castle metal"; melodic black metal rooted in the sound and aesthetic of Obsequiae while incorporating a multitude of other influences. There is an ever-growing roster of bands that have taken up the banner in similar yet distinct ways, and three released full-length albums this year: Morke with To Carry On, Veytik with Carmina Aerea in Aetate Ferrea, and Weald + Woe with Far From the Light of Heaven. The incredible musicians behind these three acts were kind enough to sit down with me to have an extended discussion on their main influences, lyrical and thematic inspirations, albums of year, and more. Don your chain mail, sharpen your sword, pour a chalice of your desired beverage, and enjoy! 9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter (X) | Instagram | Bluesky

On this final episode of 2024, Trevor and Shane each select 5 albums and together compile their top 10 albums of the year. The ground rules were simple and were the same this year as prior years: 1. They couldn't select an album from 2024 that already had a "deep dive" episode. 2. They wouldn't be ranking their top 5 or the final top 10 in any particular order 3. They couldn't both select the same album. Finally, at the end of the episode, Shane and Trevor each announce their #1 album of the year, information they have not previously shared with one another until this moment recording. With these self-imposed rules in place, Trevor and Shane took turns sharing their picks for the year one by one. The list is as follows: Trevor: The Cure - Songs Of A Lost World, Pedro the Lion - Santa Cruz, Grandaddy - Blu Wave, Orville Peck - Stampede, Royel Otis - Pratts & Pain Shane: MJ Lenderman - Manning Fireworks, Khruangbin - A LA SALA, The Felice Brothers - Valley of Abandoned Songs, Sierra Farrell - Trail of Flowers, Vampire Weekend - Only God Was Above Us Did your favorite album make our list? On this week's show, we spend quality time with the records that sparked joy, inspired us to get out of bed, face the day & conquer the world while the world continued to rage on like an unholy dumpster fire. All this & much, much less! Debts No Honest Man Can Pay is over 2 rock-solid hours of musical eclectica & other noodle stories. The show started in 2003 at WHFR-FM (Dearborn, MI), moved to WGWG-FM (Boiling Springs, NC) in 2006 & Plaza Midwood Community Radio (Charlotte, NC) in 2012, with a brief pit-stop at WLFM-FM (Appleton, WI) in 2004.
We round off the best rock and metal albums of 2024 with lists from Sam and Mark, plus the all important and really incredibly great this year listener poll from all of you to really see who gets crowned.
Alex and Ivo pick apart their raw data feels courtesy of Spotify Wrapped, before teeing up a new award that we'd simply love you to contribute to.
