We explore the last half of Revelation Chapter 9 in this episode, and events which might surround the blowing of the sixth trumpet.

Revelation 9:13–21 exposes the terrifying reality of God's judicial hardening. As the sixth trumpet sounds, humanity is confronted not with demons they can't escape—but with their own refusal to repent. John shows us that the greatest danger isn't what comes at us but what lives in us when hearts grow cold to God. In this sobering passage, the Lord warns the church that judgment falls not merely because of wicked deeds, but because sinners love their idols more than the God who calls them to life. Yet even here, Christ encourages His people: in a world spiraling deeper into rebellion, He keeps His saints steadfast, reminding us that repentance is a gift of grace and that the Lamb reigns even when the trumpets sound.

Introduction: If you have your Bibles let me invite you to open with me to the book of Revelation chapter 9. We turn our attention this morning to the sixth trumpet in this series of seven trumpets which follow after the pattern of the seven seals that we saw earlier in our study of Revelation.… and…

This powerful exploration of Revelation 9 takes us deep into the prophetic vision of the fifth and sixth trumpet judgments, revealing a sobering picture of God's wrath during the tribulation period. We're confronted with demonic forces unleashed from the bottomless pit—locusts with scorpion-like stings that torment unrepentant humanity for five months, and an army of 200 million horsemen bringing death to a third of mankind. What makes this passage particularly striking is not just the vivid imagery of supernatural judgment, but the heartbreaking conclusion: even after experiencing such devastating plagues, the rest of mankind still refused to repent. This speaks to the dangerous hardness of the human heart when it persistently rejects God's grace. The key spiritual insight here is the contrast between those sealed by God—protected and saved—and those who continue in idolatry, murder, sorcery, sexual immorality, and theft. For us living in the church age, this serves as both a warning and an encouragement. We're reminded that we won't face this wrath because we're covered by the blood of Christ, yet we're also challenged to examine our own hearts. Are there areas where we're still holding back from full surrender? The passage from 1 Corinthians 6 brings hope: 'such were some of you, but you were washed, sanctified, and justified.' Today remains the day of salvation, the time of grace, when repentance is still possible and God's mercy is freely offered.

When the sixth trumpet is blown in John's vision, four angels are turned loose to kill one-third of all the people on earth. Allusion to the Exodus story–plague of frogs In case we were uncertain as to the nature of the frog-like beings, John adds, “they are the spirits of demons doing signs” (16:14).  False Prophet: the ability to perform signs was one of its primary features (13:13-14)  The signs that he performed were the means by which he “deceives” the nations (13:14). 6th Bowl: the signs are given to “the kings of the inhabited world in order to gather them for the war” (16:14).  16:15 is a parenthetical insertion These words echo the message to the church in Sardis (3:3).  “Armageddon”—“battle of Megiddo” “Harmagedon”—“mount of Megiddo.” Zech 2:11; Ezek 38-39 16:17-21 7th Bowl  “It is done” (16:17) “Theophanic manifestations” 4:5 Throne Room 8:5 earthquake 11:19 hail  16:17-21 nothing is added A “talent”

Revelation 9:1-21 1 Then the fifth angel sounded: And I saw a star fallen from heaven to the earth. To him was given the key to the bottomless pit. 2 And he opened the bottomless pit, and smoke arose out of the pit like the smoke of a great furnace. So the sun and the air were darkened because of the smoke of the pit. 3 Then out of the smoke locusts came upon the earth. And to them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power. 4 They were commanded not to harm the grass of the earth, or any green thing, or any tree, but only those men who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads. 5 And they were not given authority to kill them, but to torment them for five months. Their torment was like the torment of a scorpion when it strikes a man. 6 In those days men will seek death and will not find it; they will desire to die, and death will flee from them. 7 The shape of the locusts was like horses prepared for battle. On their heads were crowns of something like gold, and their faces were like the faces of men. 8 They had hair like women's hair, and their teeth were like lions' teeth. 9 And they had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the sound of their wings was like the sound of chariots with many horses running into battle. 10 They had tails like scorpions, and there were stings in their tails. Their power was to hurt men five months. 11 And they had as king over them the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, but in Greek he has the name Apollyon. 12 One woe is past. Behold, still two more woes are coming after these things. 13 Then the sixth angel sounded: And I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God, 14 saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates.” 15 So the four angels, who had been prepared for the hour and day and month and year, were released to kill a third of mankind. 16 Now the number of the army of the horsemen was two hundred million; I heard the number of them. 17 And thus I saw the horses in the vision: those who sat on them had breastplates of fiery red, hyacinth blue, and sulfur yellow; and the heads of the horses were like the heads of lions; and out of their mouths came fire, smoke, and brimstone. 18 By these three plagues a third of mankind was killed—by the fire and the smoke and the brimstone which came out of their mouths. 19 For their power is in their mouth and in their tails; for their tails are like serpents, having heads; and with them they do harm. 20 But the rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands, that they should not worship demons, and idols of gold, silver, brass, stone, and wood, which can neither see nor hear nor walk. 21 And they did not repent of their murders or their sorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts.
