McLean County State's Attorney Ladd Erickson has not been mincing words in his reaction to some of President Joe Biden's pardons that impact our region. He's called them "ridiculous" and "despicable," though he wants to be clear that this didn't have anything to do with politics. "Some of the stuff that President Trump said he's going to pardon is despicable," he said on this episode of Plain Talk. But at least one of Biden's pardons is very, very personal to him. Erickson was involved in bringing Hunter Hanson to justice. Hanson defrauded dozens of people to the tune of about $11 million, but as Erickson explained to us on the show, his victim pool is larger than that. Whole businesses, some of which were the pillars of their small, rural communities, collapsed as a result of Hanson's actions. And President Biden commuted his sentence. Why? "I have no idea," Erickson told us, "and that's one of the frustrations." Also on this episode, Sen. Dale Patten, a Republican from Watford City, weighs in on the controversy over the proposed Maah Daah Hey National Monument. A group of activists are pushing hard to get President Biden to create this monument with an executive order on his way out of office, but Patten says it's far too big a decision to be made unilaterally in Washington D.C. "This is 140,000 acres," he said. "This is twice the size of Theodore Roosevelt National Park." He also said that Biden using the authority of the Antiquities Act would be in appropriate. "It's a circumvention of congressional intent when wilderness is declared a national monument." Patten said his criticism of the project isn't political. "As the proposal sits, I don't care who the president is, there would be opposition." He would prefer that local stakeholders in North Dakota -- from agricultural interests to industrial interests to tribes and all levels of state and local government -- work together on a plan to address whatever protections these lands need. "Do we need to include the federal to do that? No we don't," he said. If you want to participate in Plain Talk, just give us a call or text at 701-587-3141. You had to stay up really late to watch President Biden's emotional farewell to America speech. Gaza is the “key issue of our era,” Green Party presidential hopeful Jill Stein told the MintCast today. “Every international law in the books is being broken,” she said, “This is not something that began on October 7. This is the continuation of ethnic cleansing and displacement that began in 1947 and 1948 with the displacement of 750,000 people.”While Stein condemned Israel for its actions, she placed ultimate responsibility for much of the violence on Washington, telling MintCast host Mnar Adley that:Quite simply, Joe Biden needs to pick up the phone and tell Israel to cease and desist from this war being conducted on Gaza, the blockade, the use of starvation as a weapon, the total violation of international law and the conduct of a genocide, which is going on. There is enormous agency that the United States has here: we are paying for this. We are supplying 80% of the weapons [to Israel]!”A physician by trade, Stein has been involved in the Green movement for decades. She first ran for office in 2002, attempting to become the governor of her native Massachusetts. In 2012 and 2016, she was selected as the Green Party's presidential candidate. Running against Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton in 2016, she received over 1% of the national vote. She is currently the overwhelming favorite to represent the Green Party in the 2024 presidential election.Congress, Stein noted, has just approved $3.8 billion in aid to Israel, with another $17 billion pending for the purpose of “not only continu[ing] its genocide but to expand its wars in the Middle East.”Global public opinion is increasingly turning against the U.S., Stein warned, turning both Washington and Israel into “pariahs.” Even inside the United States, recent polling shows that a majority of Democratic voters consider Israeli actions to constitute genocide. And President Biden continues to offer unconditional support. This, it seems, is pushing millions of voters to consider the Green Party as an alternative. Stein described the Democratic establishment as in a state of “panic” over the “widespread revolt” among its voter base, which could see the party's chances of winning elections destroyed. For that reason, she said, they are fielding “an army of corporate lawyers to try to dirty trick us, to find little technicalities to throw us off the ballot.”This is not a new phenomenon, as the Green Party has long dealt with the Democrats' attempts to suppress them. However, what has changed, Stein said, is the party's willingness to announce their intentions to limit democracy openly.Support the showMintPress News is a fiercely independent. SERIES 2 EPISODE 118: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: His whores in the House of Representatives led by Matt Gaetz, Marjorie Taylor Greene and Elise Stefanik have inadvertently admitted that Trump HAS been DISQUALIFIED from being president under the language of Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. They have introduced a bill in the House declaring that Trump did not engage in insurrection and J.D. Vance did the same in the Senate and why does that sound SO FAMILIAR? Oh, right! The final sentence of the 14th Amendment! "Congress may, by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.” No they're not CALLING it that; they may not even understand that THAT is what it IS, but they have just introduced measures in the House and the Senate to legally or symbolically enact the Congressional override OF The Disqualification Clause of the 14th Amendment AS PROVIDED IN the The Disqualification Clause of the 14th Amendment. And to DO that you are admitting, explicitly or tacitly, that the 14thAmendment APPLIES TO TRUMP. Why declare him “not an insurrectionist” if it doesn't matter whether anybody CALLS him an insurrectionist? And the only reason you would actually INTRODUCE such a bill is if you A) were just told that the Supreme Court may very well agree that the Constitution is clear and Colorado is right and Trump is ALREADY disqualified and you had damn well better at least TRY to legislate him OUT of disqualification… OR – more likely - B) if you had just become convinced that all the other phony-baloney arguments saving Trump from disqualification like “he's not an OFFICER” were falling apart and that this battle – in the Supreme Court, or in the legislature of every state of the union – is going to revert back to, is going to BOIL DOWN to, whether or not Disloyalty J. Trump “engaged in insurrection or rebellion or given aid or comfort to the enemies” and you need to give your master something – anything – a fig leaf, a cheeseburger, with which to cover himself for the battle to come. Maybe a diaper. ALSO: The DC District Court not only voted unanimously against Trump's hallucination that there is "presidential immunity" but took 57 pages to tell him, thus leaving the Supreme Court almost no way to overrule them. The trial now could start as early as June 1 and should be done no later than October 20. House Republicans aren't just schmucks they're fail-schmucks. When they couldn't impeach DHS Secretary Mayorkas Greene blamed the Democrats for "hiding" their votes because of course nobody knows how many Democrats there are in the House. And President Biden did exactly what I suggested, pointed to the border deal, said the Republicans blew it up merely to serve Trump. And then, Nikki Haley agreed with him. B-Block (26:25) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Laura Ingraham and Speaker Mike Johnson openly laugh at the idea of paying the members of the Border Patrol more. What WAS Marjorie Taylor Greene doing in the House Men's Room? Tucker Carlson is interviewing Putin because he thinks no other American reporters bothered to.
