People from all walks of life, taking big risks for their art.We start with Bee Bertrand, who says our show - and one innocent question from Ify - inspired him to quit his job six months ago to commit fully to stand-up comedy. He tells us what's happened since that fateful day.Illustrator Narges Noori shares how her fight to create art in Afghanistan under the Taliban, led her to seek safety in Edmonton.15-year-old Hyun Byun is so determined to become the next K-pop idol, he spent a year away from family and friends to train at a K-pop school in South Korea. Now he's back home in Toronto, trying to balance life as a high school student and keeping his ambitious singing and dancing dreams alive. And 20 years into his career, Winnipeg musician Grant Davidson (of Slow Leaves) shares what it's like to give everything to his music, and still feel like he's fallen short.

In this 9th and mystical episode of the Graventown pod, I had the chance to talk with song-forger and tune-wielder and long-time pal Grant Davidson who is known musically as Slow Leaves. Slow Leaves is Winnipeg songwriter Grant Davidson. His 2020 record, Shelf Life (working title), marks his third studio album under the moniker Slow Leaves. With a laid-back crooner's lilt and nylon string guitar, Davidson finds universal themes through the deeply personal. Exploring ideas of lost time, elusive wisdom, romantic realism, and the struggle to reconcile family life, art, and aging, Slow Leaves persists in finding poetry in ordinary things and a humanity that shines in even the darkest corners. He also recorded, mixed and produced his latest album "Holiday" at a dark peak of Covid in his basement. Grant is an always interesting and unique voice in the music world, and it was an honour to catch up and chat with this melodic magician.  Have a listen and do your best to stay kind at all times.Help me fund my next album by clicking here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/gravencanada/simple-complex-a-porthole-into-gravens-15th-major-release #graventown #gravencanada #singersongwriter Catch me in a town near you by visting my website to see where I'm playing. It only took one listen at his producer's house in 2003 to convince me that JP Hoe had something special. He's got a big, powerful, one-of-a-kind voice, and knows how to craft a memorable melody. I knew he was headed for great things and couldn't wait to share his music with people. And I've been doing it steadily for 18 years now. In that time, he's put out an early EP, 4 full-length albums, kick-started the creation of one of my favourite live music venues, and created a perennially successful and popular Christmas-time concert, The Hoe Hoe Hoe Holiday Show, and a related collection of original and classic Christmas songs. He is one of the most popular live acts in Winnipeg, always performing to sold-out crowds and is a regular at local festivals and major events. He was part of a local supergroup called Middle of Nowhere, which was made up of JP, Rusty Matyas (now known as Rusty Robot), Alexa Dirks (now doing big things as Begonia), Grant Davidson (aka Slow Leaves) and Keri Latimer (leader of Leaf Rapids and Nathan.) He's extensively toured Canada, The USA, Australia, Iceland, and Europe. Needless to say, the guy's been busy! JP has been one of the most played artists on my radio shows and has stopped by the studio to chat and sing at least a dozen times, but somehow, it's always fresh and fun and interesting. JP Hoe lives in Winnipeg with his wife and two kids. You can find him online at JPHoe.com and on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. He's hard at work on a long-awaited new album. I've got more from our conversation that I'll share on the September 5 episode of my show Tell the Band to Go Home, which you can find at tellthebandtogohome.com. Grant Davidson, known professionally as Slow Leaves, is a Canadian singer, songwriter, and musician. Davidson began playing guitar at age 15, inspired after discovering a Led Zeppelin II cassette tape in his older brother's room. It was a finger-picked guitar however that would eventually form the heart of his songs. After three shoe-string budget albums under his own name, Davidson debuted as Slow Leaves in 2014 with Beauty Is So Common, followed by Enough About Me in 2017. In 2020 he released the strikingly vulnerable Shelf Life which represented the culmination of a distinctive poetic voice exploring recurring themes of romantic memory, artistic ambition, and dreams left unfulfilled. Davidson's voice is fragile and assured. His music could exist as comfortably in the ‘70s as it does in today's age of curated images and hollow soundbites, when vulnerability can be seen as defiance and sincerity as radical.
