Slam Allen wants a smile on your face Slam Allen has got it figured out. He spoke with The Current while driving up I-95 from Miami after a monthlong gig on the Brilliant Lady, a new mega cruise ship that plies the Caribbean and anchors in Aruba and Jamaica. For half the year, he plays guitar for two hours a night and relaxes the rest of the time. "Those gigs are a beautiful situation, man," he says. "They give guest artists a nice cabin with a balcony and free food." His parents moved to the Monticello area from Alabama, and Allen retains that drawl, which he brings to the Towne Crier in Beacon on Saturday (Jan. 24). He still lives in the Hudson Valley and has played at the 54-year-old club since its early days in Pawling. Born into a musical family, Allen earned the cruise ship gigs by developing a gritty, down-home sound rooted in the blues and soul, paying his dues in dive bars. After 9/11, he moved to Chicago, birthplace of the electric blues, to see if he had the chops to hang with the masters and ended up touring with harmonica giant James Cotton for a decade before taking his guitar on the road as a solo performer. Allen explored working with major labels but says he disliked what he discovered. "I didn't want anything to do with that system," he says. "They control you and try to change you." He has performed in all 50 states and 10 countries, a career that derives in part from his nasty guitar tone and infectious onstage exuberance. Having a flashy Art Deco-style six-string also helps. His playing balances feel and technique with felicity and sets of tasteful tunes are paced with extended endings, call-and-response with the audience and a stroll through the crowd to flirt, joke and pose for selfies. "Back in the 1990s, when wireless equipment was getting started, I was the first guitarist in the blues community to do that," he says. "People called me crazy but, now, they're all doing it." Blues is an obvious influence, but Allen says he also plays soul, R&B, funk and reggae "that makes people feel good." Other influences are apparent, but when he plays a B.B. King song, he channels the master's style. "I studied the man and how he related to the audience, but my first major guitar influence was George Benson," Allen says. "And I learned from the entertainers in the Borscht Belt during the 1980s when I worked in the hotels." For Allen, there is something deeper than the music. He preaches about the power of positivity and calls himself the SoulWorking Man: "I'm on a mission to work people's souls and put smiles on their faces," he says. Reminded that the blues are equated with sadness, he responds: "It depends on who's playing it." Allen doesn't use set lists. "I channel the energy in the room, and the guitar is my delivery system," he says. "I'm not pulling from church or the Bible, but from that spiritual energy we all have. I believe in it and manifest it." The Towne Crier Cafe is located at 379 Main St. in Beacon. William "Bill" Easley, born in Olean, NY, is a saxophonist, flutist and clarinetist, has performed with some of the most iconic musicians, including George Benson, Isaac Hayes, Ruth Brown, Ron Carter, Grady Tate, Bobby Short, John Lewis, Winton Marsalis and Louis Bells, just to name a few! He has been part of the orchestra of 10 Broadway Shows, including Black and Blue, Sophisticated Ladies, The Wiz, Jelly Last Jam, Fosse.As side from being a sideman on many recording, he has 5 recording as a leader.He has performed in a host of club such as Minton's, Village Vanguard in New York, Plugged Nickel in Chicago, The Jazz Work Shop in Boston to Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. He began performing with his father, a bandleader with his own band and his mother, who was a master pianist. This episode is informative, historic yet oh so funny! It is not to be missed. Around the year 2000, keyboardist Jai Winding decided he didn't want to be a hugely successful musician anymore and traded in his rock star life for real estate. He made the right move for him, but boy was it fun while it lasted. Some of the collaborations we discuss this week include the Pointer Sisters, George Benson, Don Henley, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Olivia Newton-John, Howard Jones, and more. Unfortunately, Jai's home, and the homes of many of his clients, were destroyed in the fires in the Pacific Palisades earlier this year and he lost everything including his entire community. Guitarist, bassist, composer Phil Upchurch died on November 23, and with his passing the music world lost one of its true "musician's musicians." Upchurch played on more than a thousand recordings  — from Michael Jackson, Donny Hathaway, Chaka Khan, Curtis Mayfield, and George Benson to Jimmy Reed, the Staples Singers, and countless jazz, blues, and soul sessions. He belonged to the generation that didn't just shape popular music; they invented it. For my dad, Ben Sidran, Phil was also a friend for over 50 years. They recorded and toured together, shared studios, homes, families, and a deep creative kinship. Some of my earliest gigs as a drummer were with Phil, and those moments helped define my own musical path. When we heard that Phil had passed, I called my dad so we could remember him together — the sessions, the stories, the laughter, the generosity, and the unmistakable sound that made him both an insider's secret and a foundational figure in American music. This episode is a tribute — a conversation about a life lived fully in music, about reputation and legacy, and about the musicians who shaped the landscape from behind the scenes. Today, we're revisiting our 2020 conversation with Stax legend David Porter.ABOUT DAVID PORTER Named one of Rolling Stone magazine's “100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time,” Porter is best known for his songwriting partnership with Isaac Hayes that helped define the sound of Memphis's legendary Stax Records. As the first African American staff songwriter at Stax, Porter, along with his partner, wrote and produced songs such as “B-A-B-Y” for Carla Thomas, “Your Good Thing (Is About to End)”—an R&B hit for Mable John that later became a pop and R&B smash for Lou Rawls, and his own recording of “Can't See You When I Want To.” Hayes and Porter are best known, however, for their work with Sam & Dave, including such classic hits as “You Don't Know Like I Know,” “You Got Me Hummin',” “Hold On! I'm Comin'” (which later became a country hit for Waylon Jennings and Jerry Reed), “Soul Man” (which became a hit a second time thanks to the Blues Brothers), “I Thank You” (which was later covered by ZZ Top), and “When Something is Wrong with My Baby” (which was reimagined as a memorable duet between Otis Redding and Carla Thomas, a country hit for Sonny James, and an adult contemporary hit for Linda Ronstadt and Aaron Neville). We start the episode with a chat about artists that drastically changed their sound over the years – from the Beatles to Cher to Alanis to Herbie Hancock to Bob Dylan to Fleetwood Mac to Beyonce. Speaking of artists that changed their sound, how about the Bee Gees? They started out as a folky pop band and changed their sound to R&B in the mid ‘70s to out and out disco by 1977. We have an excellent 1989 Brad Giffen interview with Barry Gibb as he talks about the groups desire to keep going in spite of the backlash they faced after Saturday Night Fever. It cast a long shadow on them, but they endured by writing hit songs for other artists. Then, we have a really fun chat with Jason Mraz from 2012 and 2014. You get a real sense of who he is - an almost old school hippy vibe that’s really endearing. Plus, some audio from the late ‘70s/early ‘80s with the great George Benson – a jazz giant who had lots of commercial success. He has some great insights as well. And then we chat with one of Christopher’s favourite people – Ian Thomas – who has had a whole string of hit records that Canadians know and love – and some of those songs were covered by the likes of Santana, Manfred Mann and America. Welcome back to Drummers on Drumming. This is another installment of Big Fat Five—the series where I sit down with my favorite drummers and ask them to break down the five records that shaped how they approach the kit. Lately I've been fortunate to have guests who've already appeared in other drummers' Big Fat Fives, and today's guest is one of them: Terry Silverlight. Terry's career is so deep and wide-ranging that I almost don't even want to start listing artists. His discography is massive — you can check it out on his website HERE and he's still extremely active today. He was already recording at 14 on his brother Barry Miles' record, and he hasn't slowed down since. Along the way he's worked with everyone from George Benson to Roberta Flack to Natalie Merchant, just to name a few. This episode doesn't veer from the Big Fat Five format, but Terry interleaves the records that shaped him with the way music has been ingrained in his life from day one. I mention this at the top of our chat, but it's worth saying again here — the through-line of music in Terry's story is undeniable. Toward the end, I also ask him about a session that came up in Aaron Steele's episode a while back, when Aaron brought up Terry's work with the band Change. Ellis Hall is an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, actor and composer. He was described as "The Ambassador of Soul" by conductor, Jeff Tyzik. Hall has been blind since the age of 18. Citing Ray Charles as his inspiration, Hall has written over 4000 soul, gospel, blues and pop songs, and has performed with Stevie Wonder, James Taylor, Natalie Cole, Patti LaBelle, Toby Keith, Herbie Hancock, George Benson, Bobby Womack, Sheila E, Maurice White of Earth, Wind and Fire, Tower of Power and Ray Charles. Ellis eventually mastered the drums, piano, keyboards, guitar, upright and electric bass. He was able to develop and define himself as a vocalist as well, possessing a five-octave range. Starting with the Ellis Hall Band opening for Earth Wind and Fire through the years as the lead singer for Tower of Power, Ellis has been making impactful music.  Ellis both wrote and performed on the soundtracks of multiple television movies and films including The Lion King 2, Shrek 2, Chicken Run, Invincible, and Bruce Almighty, sang gospel tunes in the comedy film, Big Momma's House with Martin Lawrence, and sang a Louis Armstrong tune in the crime drama film Catch Me If You Can with Leonardo DiCaprio. The original Count--Butch Burden is still thumping the bass and singing the songs. Count & The Colony were the up-and-coming band in the mid-60s, hitting the road with Question Mark & The Mysterians, as well flagging shared management with Lilly Gonzales, touring in the Count's teen years. The road was no stumbling block, providing city-to-city exposure, parties, and dedication to craft which remains to this day. Then the money dried up. A Tangerine Records contract with the Ray Charles Estate included four originals that have never been released.    Burden took his rich vocals, showmanship, and musical drive back home to Mid-Michigan where he continues to reside, 60 years later. His shows are documented in this two-part series through time, story, and epic detail. The bands that he jammed with, the music he created, and the longing to continue to be in a cover oriented group, Count & The Change, giving him a lifetime as a musician.    Here in Part 2 of 2, Butch dives into the hotel residencies with Amphagas that put the spotlight on the band with the likes of Elvis, Led Zeppelin, Little River Band, George Benson, Liza Minelli, and moments with Robert Plant and Patti LaBelle that made up fantastic memories. Today, we're revisiting our 2015 conversation with Bill Withers.  ABOUT BILL WITHERSPop and R&B legend Bill Withers released nine albums between 1971 and 1985 that included such classic songs as “Lean on Me,” “Ain't No Sunshine,” “Grandma's Hands,” “Use Me,” “Lovely Day,” and “Just the Two of Us.” Though he stepped away from the limelight in the mid-1980s, his songs have become classics that have withstood the test of time and been covered by iconic artists including Aretha Franklin, Michael Jackson, Gladys Knight, Garth Brooks, Willie Nelson, Paul McCartney, Ike & Tina Turner, Smokey Robinson, Al Green, The Staple Singers, Diana Ross, Neil Diamond, Sting, Linda Ronstadt, Roberta Flack, Buddy Guy, Barbra Streisand, and George Benson. Additionally, his music has been sampled by Jay-Z, Dr. Dre, L.L. Cool J, Tupac Shakur, and Kanye West. Withers was in the inaugural class of the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame, and is a nine-time Grammy nominee. He won three Grammy awards for Best R&B song for “Ain't No Sunshine” in 1971, “Just the Two of Us” in 1981, and the Club Nouveau cover of “Lean on Me” in 1987.
