This sermon explores how the tabernacle in Exodus points back to the Garden of Eden and forward to the hope of eternal life with God. It reveals humanity's deep longing for “home” - a longing ultimately fulfilled not in success, comfort, or relationships, but in Jesus Christ. The message shows how God's desire has always been to dwell with His people, and how Jesus came to bring us back into relationship with Him through the cross. Even in a restless and broken world, believers are reminded that true rest, purpose, and belonging are found in Christ alone, who promises to be with us now and bring us home forever.

Renowned bassist Marion Hayden will return to The Station at Michigan Central with the Grammy-nominated band Straight Ahead for a special Mother's Day edition of Fridays at The Station, on May 8, 2026. The Detroit-born Hayden was the first artist to perform at the first-ever Fridays at The Station event, in April 2025. She has performed and recorded with a number of leading musicians from the 1980s onwards and is considered one of the best acoustical bassists in the country. She began performing at age 15 under the tutelage of master trumpeter Marcus Belgrave and saxophonist Wendell Harrison. She would go on to perform with legends such as Regina Carter, Nancy Wilson, Lionel Hampton and George Benson. She also received the Kresge Eminent Artist Award in 2025, and is widely recognized as an advocate for the preservation of the cultural and artistic legacy of jazz. She is a co-founder of the Grammy-nominated ensemble Straight Ahead—the first all-woman jazz ensemble signed to Atlantic Records. Over the years, members of the band have shared the concert stage with a who's-who of the music world, including Ray Charles, Tony Bennett, George Duke, Stanley Clark, the Yellowjackets and Dianne Reeves. “Straight Ahead will present a celebration of women as creatives, composers, arrangers and conceptualists,” Hayden said. “The band will open a musical conversation, engaging the audience in themes of womanhood, power and intentionally creating a space where women are uplifted.” Featuring Hayden on bass, Alina Morr on keys, Gayelynn McKinney on drums, Ingrid Racine on trumpet and the vocal stylings of Kymberli Wright. Widely recognized for their eclectic and soulful approach to creating music, the Straight Ahead sound ranges comfortably from jazz, to Latin music and jazzy hip-hop.

Bobby Broom is the consummate jazz guitarist. His playing is informed by the greats like Wes Montgomery, Jim Hall, Grant Green, George Benson and others, but is also strikingly original. Over a career spanning decades, he played extensively with artists like Sonny Rollins, Kenny Burrell, Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Earland, Stanley Turrentine, and Dr. John among others. He has also released many albums as a leader, often in the company of his longtime trio of bassist Dennis Carol and drummer Kobie Watkins. On his upcoming release, Notes of Thanks which will be released on May 1st, 2026, Broom pays tribute to his longtime employer Sonny Rollins. Broom first played with Rollins in the early 1980s and recorded more than a half dozen albums with the elder statesman of jazz saxophone into the 2000s. I hope that you enjoy our conversation and that you get a chance to hear Bobby Broom live sometime soon. He is a great musician.

Discothèque Decadence Soundsystem presents DD021: Latin Yacht House Party A sun-drenched voyage through Latin house, yacht grooves, Balearic warmth, and feel-good dancefloor gold. Opening with the smooth luxury of Benny Santiago's “Give Me the Night - Cielo Extended”, the mix glides into The Doobie Brothers' “Long Train Runnin'”, Yacht Rock Revue's “San Junipero”, Daryl Hall & John Oates' “I Can't Go for That” in the Pomo remix, Party Pupils' “Never Too Much”, and Christopher Cross' “Ride Like The Wind - Yacht House Mix” — all bringing that glossy, sunset-on-the-water energy. Then the Latin fire rises. David Penn, DJ Chus & Dr. Kucho!'s “Esperanza” leads into Africanism & Salomão De Bahia's “Cada Vez”, before two personal weapons take centre stage: The Funk Assassin – “Sabor En Tu Piel” and The Funk Assassin – “Di Mi Nombre (Spanglish Pop Soul Edit)”. Both capture the heart of the mix: sensual, rhythmic, warm, and built for that golden-hour moment when the drinks are flowing, the sea is glowing, and the groove takes over. The second half goes full Latin house celebration with Los Amigos Invisibles & Masters At Work, Junior Jack, Basement Jaxx, Negrocan, Ultra Naté, Afro Medusa, Cesária Évora, and Bellini bringing carnival energy, percussion, big hooks, and Balearic heat. Sunday the 3rd of May was James Brown's birthday - the Godfather would've turned 93 - but rather than trot out the usual JB bangers, we went completely sideways with global covers, reinterpretations and JB-adjacent joints from every corner of the globe: Brazilian jazz-funk, Afrobeat, big band, boogaloo, library music, orchestral easy listening, and everything in between. Enoch Light's lush big band arrangement of "Hot Pants," Dick Hyman's barrelhouse take on "Give It Up or Turnit Loose," ESG's stark post-punk reimagining of "There Was a Time," Albert King cutting "Cold Sweat" from a Delta blues angle, joined by Combo Xingu, Larry Willis, NZ's Quincy Conserve, and the Boogaloo Combo. Kirk held it down through the boogie and soul section with some serious heat, and from there we moved into a deep run of soul, jazz-funk, smooth boogie, and contemporary beats - from Azymuth's cosmic Brazilian groove and Bob James to George Benson, Shakatak, Shalamar, and and exclusive spin of some forthcoming heat from one of NZ music's MVPs: Nathan Haines. The back end got more current with Los Retros, Ego Ella May, Corto Alto, and Shy One's "Nort Wess" choppy electro and grime-inflected mid-range synths released on South London's Touching Bass late last year. We rounded things out with Orgone's deep funk stomp "Hambone" and Alex Nut and Steve Spacek's "Bright." A big spread for a big birthday - happy 93rd, JB!

So in this week's episode we're doing another fusion of Modern Funk, Nu-Boogie, and Nu-Disco with soulful edits. We're traveling from the West Coast synth-funk of E. Live and B. Bravo to the chic disco-infused streets of Paris with Yuksek and L'Impératrice, while keeping our roots in place with George Benson and Róisín Murphy. It's soulful, it's groovy, and it's got that heavy 80s synth DNA with a fresh, sophisticated edge. 📺 This is Episode 224 of the Summer Fondue Sessions radioshow, originally an audio‑only show, now in the video format → watch this mix on YT at https://www.youtube.com/@summerfondue 🌐 More information and show archive with tracklists → https://www.summerfondue.com 🙏🏼 Please support the artists making this great music: follow them, stream their work, and buy their releases to help keep the scene thriving!

What started as a solo recording session for Greg Loiacano quickly turned into something much bigger when drummer Michael Urbano stepped in—and the chemistry was instant. Add longtime collaborator and powerhouse percussionist Vicki Randle, and Stingray was born. The trio talks about the unspoken language that defines their music: listening more than talking, playing for the song, and letting structure and feel guide everything. Influenced by classic soul, R&B, funk, and rock—from Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gaye to Sly Stone and beyond—Stingray's sound feels timeless but alive in the moment. We dig into:How the band formed organically (and accidentally)Why joy and laughter are non-negotiable onstageThe rare magic of musicians who truly listen to one anotherPlaying parts instead of overplayingBalancing Stingray with busy touring and recording schedulesRecording at the legendary 2200 Studios and feeling the weight of Bay Area music historyWhat's next: new singles, more shows, and getting back into the studioWith lineup support from Tom Ayer's, Kofi Brown, and Danny Eisenberg, Stingray is prioritizing what matters most—great songs, great vibes, and genuine connection. If you've ever wondered what it looks like when seasoned musicians stop chasing “projects” and start chasing feeling, this conversation says it all.New singles out now:Come Back HomeI Hope We Get to DanceRecorded backstage, moments after finishing their November 2025 set at Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley, California —because the best conversations always happen only in the green room.Greg Loiacono. Don and Dude kick off a new year and a new series with the first “I Love the 80s” episode, zeroing in on 1980 as a hinge point between the shaggy experimentation of the 1970s and the sleeker, high-gloss sound that would define the decade. One host brings a Rock pick and the other counters with an R&B gem, sketching how guitars, grooves, and studio polish collided at the dawn of the 80s.The AlbumsGeorge Benson – Give Me the Night (1980) A sleek, radio-ready fusion of jazz, R&B, funk, and sophisticated pop that marks Benson's full crossover from respected jazz guitarist to smooth pop-soul star. Working with producer Quincy Jones and songwriter Rod Temperton, Benson wraps fluid guitar lines and intimate vocals around tight grooves, warm keys, and sparkling horns, creating a nocturnal soundtrack to city nightlife that helped shape early-80s quiet storm and smooth jazz.Iron Maiden – Iron Maiden (1980) A raw, fast, and street-level debut that helped launch the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, blending galloping bass lines, twin-guitar harmonies, and gritty, punk-leaning vocals. Recorded with minimal studio gloss, the album captures a young band playing loud and lean in smoke-filled pubs, turning dark urban tales, horror imagery, and medieval menace into a combustible new blueprint for 80s metal.Diggin' AlbumsGeese – Getting Killed (2025) A chaotic, inventive Brooklyn art-rock record produced by Kenny Beats, jumping from nervous, mathy rhythms to soulful swells and surreal lyrics, highlighting how adventurous guitar music still thrives in the streaming era.Prince – Dirty Mind (1980) A pivotal early statement from Prince that fuses stripped-down funk, new wave, and dance with provocatively frank lyrics, its raw, minimalist sound foreshadowing where 80s pop and R&B were headed.Donovan – what's a girl (2025) A long-shelved early-90s project finally released to celebrate Donovan's 60th anniversary, blending Gaelic romance, orchestral folk, grunge-leaning pop, and spoken poetry into a late-career “lost album” that reconnects him to his 60s roots.Cameron Crowe – The Uncool: A Memoir (2025) A long-awaited memoir tracing Crowe's teenage years as a rock journalist on the road with bands like Led Zeppelin, the Eagles, and David Bowie, revisiting the real-life stories that inspired Almost Famous while digging deeper into his family life and writing voice.Follow the show on Instagram, Facebook, Threads, and Bluesky @albumnerds, and support by subscribing, rating, reviewing, and sharing.“We are in a golden age of music. Guitarist, bassist, composer Phil Upchurch died on November 23, and with his passing the music world lost one of its true "musician's musicians." Upchurch played on more than a thousand recordings  — from Michael Jackson, Donny Hathaway, Chaka Khan, Curtis Mayfield, and George Benson to Jimmy Reed, the Staples Singers, and countless jazz, blues, and soul sessions. He belonged to the generation that didn't just shape popular music; they invented it. For my dad, Ben Sidran, Phil was also a friend for over 50 years. They recorded and toured together, shared studios, homes, families, and a deep creative kinship. Some of my earliest gigs as a drummer were with Phil, and those moments helped define my own musical path. When we heard that Phil had passed, I called my dad so we could remember him together — the sessions, the stories, the laughter, the generosity, and the unmistakable sound that made him both an insider's secret and a foundational figure in American music. This episode is a tribute — a conversation about a life lived fully in music, about reputation and legacy, and about the musicians who shaped the landscape from behind the scenes. Born in Dixon, Illinois, into a deeply musical family, he honed his craft with Charlie Geyer and later at Indiana University under legendary pedagogue William Adam. After an early run co-founding the jazz-fusion band Seawind in Hawaii, Hey moved to Los Angeles in the mid-1970s and quickly became a first-call session player and arranger. From there, his sound is heard on a staggering number of iconic recordings. Hey's horn writing and trumpet playing helped shape Michael Jackson's Off the Wall and Thriller albums, and his long association with Quincy Jones produced landmark work for Earth, Wind & Fire, George Benson, Al Jarreau, Patti Austin, Barbra Streisand, Toto, and countless others. A six-time Grammy winner, he has been recognized repeatedly for his instrumental and vocal arrangements, as well as his contributions to major film and television scores, including Flashdance, The Color Purple, the Back to the Future trilogy, Forrest Gump, and Dreamgirls. Most recently, Hey has opened his personal archives in Notes From The Past 50 Years, a 250-page collection of pop excerpts spanning his studio career. The book gathers more than 200 of his favorite licks, along with personal stories and rare photos that trace his path from early days in Los Angeles to his most iconic sessions—including a few lesser-known musical gems. Equally at home leading a horn section, crafting a string chart, or delivering a lyrical flugelhorn solo, Hey remains a benchmark for precision, style, and imagination in the studio, with an influence that continues to shape how artists, arrangers, and producers think about horn sections today.   Episode Links: Website: www.heyhorns.com Instagram (@heyhorns) Jerry Hey playlist The Other Side of the Bell Episode #15 - William "Bill" Adam Tribute The Other Side of the Bell Episode #22 - Jerry Hey   Podcast Credits: "A Room with a View" - composed and performed by Howie Shear Podcast Host - John Snell Cover Photo Credit - Jerry Hey/Megan Noller Audio Engineer - Ted Cragg

With hosts Patrick Evans and Randy Florence, he recalls faking his first bass gig at 14, serving in Panama during tense Cold War days, then rising through Motown and Warner Bros. to help break artists like the Spinners and George Benson. Eddie shares inside stories about working with icons including Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Smokey Robinson, Michael Jackson, Bonnie Raitt, Curtis Mayfield, and more—plus why some of the most memorable moments happened offstage. We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. Today, we're revisiting our 2020 conversation with Stax legend David Porter.ABOUT DAVID PORTER Named one of Rolling Stone magazine's “100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time,” Porter is best known for his songwriting partnership with Isaac Hayes that helped define the sound of Memphis's legendary Stax Records. As the first African American staff songwriter at Stax, Porter, along with his partner, wrote and produced songs such as “B-A-B-Y” for Carla Thomas, “Your Good Thing (Is About to End)”—an R&B hit for Mable John that later became a pop and R&B smash for Lou Rawls, and his own recording of “Can't See You When I Want To.” Hayes and Porter are best known, however, for their work with Sam & Dave, including such classic hits as “You Don't Know Like I Know,” “You Got Me Hummin',” “Hold On! I'm Comin'” (which later became a country hit for Waylon Jennings and Jerry Reed), “Soul Man” (which became a hit a second time thanks to the Blues Brothers), “I Thank You” (which was later covered by ZZ Top), and “When Something is Wrong with My Baby” (which was reimagined as a memorable duet between Otis Redding and Carla Thomas, a country hit for Sonny James, and an adult contemporary hit for Linda Ronstadt and Aaron Neville). The list of artists who've covered Porter's songs includes Aretha Franklin, Bruce Springsteen, William Bell, Melissa Ethridge, Bonnie Raitt, Garth Brooks, Etta James, Celine Dion, Wilson Pickett, George Benson, Dusty Springfield, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Staple Singers, Solomon Burke, James Brown, Eric Clapton, B. B. King, Tina Turner, Jackie Wilson, and more. His songs have been used as samples in countless recordings by artists such as Jay-Z, Eminem, Wu-Tang Clan, The Notorious B.I.G., Justin Bieber, Mariah Carey, and others. A highly celebrated giant among celebrated songwriters, Porter was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005.  Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. We start the episode with a chat about artists that drastically changed their sound over the years – from the Beatles to Cher to Alanis to Herbie Hancock to Bob Dylan to Fleetwood Mac to Beyonce. Speaking of artists that changed their sound, how about the Bee Gees? They started out as a folky pop band and changed their sound to R&B in the mid ‘70s to out and out disco by 1977. We have an excellent 1989 Brad Giffen interview with Barry Gibb as he talks about the groups desire to keep going in spite of the backlash they faced after Saturday Night Fever. It cast a long shadow on them, but they endured by writing hit songs for other artists. Then, we have a really fun chat with Jason Mraz from 2012 and 2014. You get a real sense of who he is - an almost old school hippy vibe that’s really endearing. Plus, some audio from the late ‘70s/early ‘80s with the great George Benson – a jazz giant who had lots of commercial success. He has some great insights as well. And then we chat with one of Christopher’s favourite people – Ian Thomas – who has had a whole string of hit records that Canadians know and love – and some of those songs were covered by the likes of Santana, Manfred Mann and America. Ian is one of the newest inductees into the Canadian songwriters Hall Of Fame – which is coming up on Fri, Oct 17 at the Meridian Centre in Toronto. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster. Welcome back to Drummers on Drumming. This is another installment of Big Fat Five—the series where I sit down with my favorite drummers and ask them to break down the five records that shaped how they approach the kit. Lately I've been fortunate to have guests who've already appeared in other drummers' Big Fat Fives, and today's guest is one of them: Terry Silverlight. Terry's career is so deep and wide-ranging that I almost don't even want to start listing artists. His discography is massive — you can check it out on his website HERE and he's still extremely active today. He was already recording at 14 on his brother Barry Miles' record, and he hasn't slowed down since. Along the way he's worked with everyone from George Benson to Roberta Flack to Natalie Merchant, just to name a few. This episode doesn't veer from the Big Fat Five format, but Terry interleaves the records that shaped him with the way music has been ingrained in his life from day one. I mention this at the top of our chat, but it's worth saying again here — the through-line of music in Terry's story is undeniable. Toward the end, I also ask him about a session that came up in Aaron Steele's episode a while back, when Aaron brought up Terry's work with the band Change. If you haven't heard that one, go back and check it out — Aaron's a young legend in his own right. - Get Your Copy of the Drummers on Drumming Book Today!
