Beating the heat has been critically important this summer across the country. Just this past week a camper at Kanawha State Forest was treated for heat stroke. Park Superintendent Clark Sanford offered advice for those taking part in outside activity: “You want to pack at least one bottle of water for every two miles that you plan to be out hiking, and then to eat and to have proper salt intake as well,” he said. “Your body needs that salt to be able to hold onto the water to remain hydrated.” Sanford added that if you get in trouble and you don't have cell service, you should still use your phone to call 911. Many cell phones, in the case of an emergency, can connect with satellites to get help. Officials say it's critical to listen to your body. If something doesn't feel right, slow down, take a rest and find a way to cool down. Joe Pug will not engage in the Left-Brained Vs Right-Brained debate. His artistry and pragmatic business sense have lived in actual parallel through his music career. His songwriting and creativity are fueled by passion and result in dramatic and exciting songs, as on his new album Sketch of a Promised Departure. He also has stayed ahead of the curve and created an ecosystem where self-reliance, growth and music business thrive especially with his latest venture, The Nation of Heat Vault that has every album, podcast, and newsletter up behind a paywall. In our interview, we dig into his creative process, artistic balance and family life while creating his latest project. The album was made on his own time at his new home studio (which he's been working on for a decade). His reflection of having complete control over the music production is one of relief and joy in that he was able to take as long as he wanted. We go through several songs on the album, remarking on songs like "Then the Rain," which shines in it's simplicity just like many of Lucinda Williams songs, one of his biggest inspirations. We also talk about his life journey into adulthood when he moved to Chicago, which is a chapter in his life he is writing about in detail on the new album. He talks about what he hopes for his own young kids' futures and how parenting has changed since he first became a dad seven or eight years ago. And of course, we talk about his fantastic podcast, The Working Songwriter and how being an interviewer has changed his attitude about being the interviewee.Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknewsHelp produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

If finding common ground sounds like an ambitious prospect in these profoundly polarized times, that's because, quite frankly, it is. But with his extraordinary new album, The United State, Wells has managed to transcend politics and race and religion and tap into something far deeper, something infinitely more primal and timeless. Recorded with acclaimed producer Duane Lundy (Ringo Starr, Sturgill Simpson's Sunday Valley, Joe Pug), the collection explores our innate humanity and everything that comes with it: the joy, the sorrow, the ecstasy, the pain, the hope, the fear. Wells' songs speak to the universal truths that bind us, empathetically leaping between perspectives as they reckon with personal growth and existential quandaries. The arrangements here are rich and ethereal to match, balancing lush sonic landscapes with stark acoustic meditations. The result is a subtly revelatory record, a gripping, cinematic album full of small moments and sharp insights that add up to nothing short of life itself. “Ultimately, this album's about unity,” says Wells. “It's about the common thread that connects us all.” After spending his childhood in Blanchard, LA, Wells moved with his family to Cynthiana, Kentucky as a youngster. Growing up in the rural South, he rebelled against the commercial country music that surrounded him, instead preferring the trippy psychedelia of Pink Floyd and the brash energy of Guns N' Roses. After an aimless couple of years trying to put a band together in rural Kentucky, he moved to Lexington, and immediately launched the cult favorite Southern rock band Fifth on the Floor. The group released a couple of well-received independent records before teaming up with Shooter Jennings on their breakout third album, 2013's Ashes & Angels, which debuted on the Billboard Country charts. While the record earned raves and helped land the band dates with the likes of Chris Stapleton, Sturgill Simpson, Jason Isbell, and Blackberry Smoke, it would prove to be the group's last, and following a pair of hometown farewell shows, the four-piece split for good. “When that band broke up, it kicked me in the teeth. We'd spent years clawing upward, and suddenly there was no wind, no sails,” says Wells. “That had been my dream since I was a teenager, and all of my eggs were in that basket. There was no backup plan.”  With the rug suddenly pulled out from under him, Wells found himself in freefall. Rather than succumb to the disappointment, though, he decided to write his way through the heartache, emerging stronger and more creatively invigorated on the other side with his solo debut, Dawn in the Distance. The record (and its subsequent touring) prompted the best reviews of Wells' career, with Rolling Stone hailing his “gift for melody” and Saving Country Music praising his “stunning insight and honesty.” The album reached #3 on Amazon's Alt-Country/Americana chart, and songs from the collection racked up more than a million streams on Spotify alone.  When it came time to work on a follow-up, Wells decided to flip his entire writing process on its head. Instead of penning whatever music just happened to come to mind, he crafted an entire architecture and sequence for the record in advance, following it like a road map as he wrote about what it meant to be human, to be caring, to love yourself and your fellow man, flaws and all. “Tribalism is the name of the game at this point,” says Wells. “‘Divided' is a cliche. But if you zoom out, we all bleed the same, we all laugh the same, we all cry the same. There's this common path that all of our lives follow: birth, being a dumbass kid, thinking you're falling in love, actually falling in love, starting a family. Worrying about paying the bills, death, whatever comes next. This episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and presented to you by The Barn Media Group.

Today acclaimed singer-songwriter and fellow podcaster (The Working Songwriter) Joe Pug joins me for an unexpected choice of favorite album - Weezer's classic 1996 LP 'Pinkerton'. We talk about the seeming dissonance between Pinkerton and Joe's own music, discovering the album as a 12 year old and why you are more open to change in music at that age, how the CD age dictated listening habits, how the lyrics have aged, why he would be wary of collaborating with Rivers Cuomo, why supergroups are overrated, Rivers' strange relationship with this record and why young people can make sophisticated music.

Joe Pug explains that the venn diagram of his fans and the people he'd like to have a beer with is almost exactly a single circle. The prolific troubadour has been organically gaining admirers one by one throughout his entire musical history. When he began, the Maryland songwriter would not only give away copies of his music, but he would send multiple copies to Joe Pug converts, so they could distribute among their friends. This and many other similar acts have earned him a loyal fanbase that allow him a career in music (versus carpentry, which is his other trade). His success can be attributed to learning to "keep it skinny" in terms of preserving resources in his work in addition to his timeless charm and sharp sense of humor. Not to mention, his songwriting is reminiscent of some of literature's finest like Walt Whitman, John Steinbeck, Raymond Carver and Cormac McCarthy, who he counts as large looming influences. There is a legendary tale about the night Joe Pug quit college and ran off to Chicago to pursue his musical dreams. It was the eve of his senior year at University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, where he had been studying playwriting. Pug experienced this intense feeling that he just needed to go to Chicago and write songs and play music. He speaks to how that moment translated into the mystical for him and how his relationship to his intuition has been since that moment. He also speaks about touring with Steve Earle, one of his early big breaks, and what he's learned about keeping it clean and sober on the road, something he still struggles with. We talk about his incredibly adored podcast "The Working Songwriter," where he talks shop with some of today's finest songwriters. And we get into his latest, The Diving Sun, a collection of various studio sessions with producers Duane Lundy and Kenneth along with new songs recorded in quarantine. I loved talking to him... hope you enjoy Joe! Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

We had the pleasure of interviewing Justin Wells over Zoom video! Kentucky-based singer/songwriter Justin Wells recently released his new album, The United State, which was recorded with acclaimed producer Duane Lundy (Ringo Starr, Sturgill Simpson, Joe Pug). The United State is Wells' most ambitious and methodically crafted collection of songs to date. Lead single "The Screaming Song" is a bittersweet meditation on the wonder and the terror that accompanies our entrance into this world."'The Screaming Song' is about birth, and all that joy and wonder and fear that accompanies it," Wells told Wide Open Country, who featured the video. "Casey Pierce did a fantastic job of conveying all of that in imagery that we, as grown human beings, understand and relate to, while assembling it in a context that seems esoteric: we don't see the why, we see the what. Beauty without context."Each song on The United State is the soundtrack to a different phase of our shared human experience, exploring our innate humanity and everything that comes with it: joy, sorrow, ecstasy, pain, hope, and fear. The album tracks human life from beginning to end, working its way through life chronologically. Its songs are a series of snapshots of formative moments: our entrance into the world, the freedom of youth, learning the difference between lust and love, the responsibility and anxiety of family life, passing peacefully from this life to the next. The United State is the follow-up to Justin’s solo debut album Dawn In The Distance, which prompted the best reviews of his career, with Rolling Stone hailing his "gift for melody" and Saving Country Music praising his "stunning insight and honesty." The album reached #3 on Amazon’s Alt-Country/Americana chart and racked up over a million streams on Spotify alone.Justin is formally of the cult favorite Southern rock band Fifth on the Floor, whose breakthrough Shooter Jennings-produced album Ashes & Angels debuted on the Billboard Country charts, followed by shows with Chris Stapleton, Sturgill Simpson, and Jason Isbell, before they broke up in 2013.We want to hear from you! It almost sounds like a song in itself: An acclaimed musician on his big album release day, three years in the making, finds himself on jury duty for a murder trial. As crazy or poetic as it may sound, that was the story for Maryland-based Joe Pug back in July, as his latest LP The Flood In Color hit shelves. Though born in the mid-'80s, his tales of destruction and redemption ring with a wisdom that could reflect an artist twice his age, effortlessly penning critical and emotional snapshots of the human condition. The Working Songwriter, Joe's monthly podcast since 2016, also allows him to plug into the minds of friends in the same boat, exchanging stories and unique perspectives on crafting music. On today's program, Joe details how the limitations of vinyl only add to its mystique, why he's using today's postmodern methods of promotion, whose albums filled his childhood basement, why the artwork for Weezer's self-titled debut bucked the trends of its era and how talented people survive a media that's dying around them. Quinn Tsan began her career as a back-up singer. After relocating from Minneapolis to Chicago in 2007, she collaborated with artists like Joe Pug, Rachele Eve, Tony Trimm, and others, co-writing verses on hip hop tracks, touring the midwest, providing harmonies on the 2012 EP ‘Wife Songs.’ In 2012, Tsan was invited to join the ensemble for The Fly Honey Show, an annual production by The Inconvenience that spans a 2000+ person audience each year. In 2013, Tsan became a featured musician and dancer and has since become a founding company member of the show. Shortly after, Tsan began writing and performing her own music, initially recording a collection of original songs with Liam Cunningham (Kids These Days, Marrow) and Dorian Gehring (Exit Ghost, Marrow). In 2014, Tsan’s debut EP Good Winter was released to an overwhelming response from listeners and was called “an artist with the sort of drive and purpose that many spend years trying to achieve”, by The Chicago Tribune. Following the release of the EP, Tsan produced Bedrooms, a short dance film choreographed by celebrated Chicago Artists Erin Kilmurray and Josh Anderson, with music by Tsan. Since its release in Fall, 2015, Bedrooms has appeared in four festivals and taken home prizes in three. Tsan’s forthcoming album, London, KY, was recorded by Dorian Gehring in Daniel Boone National Park in Kentucky, and will be released on October 18th, 2016. The album was performed and produced by Tsan, Dorian Gehring, Liam Cunningham, Michael Golas, Nick Broste, Raul Callejero, Sima Cunningham, and Tim Young.

Joe Pug is originally from Maryland and came to Austin, Texas years ago to be in and around the storied Texas songwriting tradition. He has two studio EP’s, most notable being Nation of Heat in 2009. He also has three albums, Messenger in 2010, The Great Despiser in 2012 and Windfall in 2015. Paste Magazine said this of Pug, "In lesser hands, songs of this nature could take on the tone of self-help books, maxims of dubious value. But Pug's honesty and wordplay combine to levitate the songs over those empty, cliched realms."He credits not only musicians like Dillon, Beck and M. Ward as his influences but also literary giants like Fredrick Beekner and Walt Whitman.

With his honeyed rasp and incisive lyrics, Joe Pug has been a singer-songwriter of rare insight since his 2009 debut. His most recent LP, 2015's Windfall, finds Pug back in the studio after a soul-searching respite, and his new songs tell of dogged perseverence and hard-won freedom. Pug talks about his new album, his re-commitment to his art and much more in this live session and interview. Joe Pug and his band perform the songs "Windfallen," "Burn & Shine" and "If Still It Can't Be Found." Recorded on April 7, 2015 live at KDHX in St. Louis, Missouri. I've learned the hard way that sometimes, it is indeed best not to meet your heroes. With this in mind, for some reason, I've purposely avoided talking to one of the greatest songwriters in the world, even though I see him all over the place and have heard that he's a humble, decent dude. This week, I took my chances and chatted with John K Samson of The Weakerthans, and found that he is every bit as decent as I've heard. Phew. He kicks off a preview of an incredibly busy week in local shows, featuring John & Christine & friends, Dala, Joe Pug, Cuff the Duke, Blue Rodeo, and more!
