In the third episode of Twang, host Lane Wendell Fischer is joined by writer, marketing specialist, and country music enthusiast Tracy Staley to discuss the role women have played in the development of country music. Despite the genre's conservative reputation, iconic artists like Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, and Reba McEntire have used country music as a platform to discuss issues from birth control to domestic violence. In this episode, we explore how these songs, and the women who sing them, fit into a musical ecosystem currently dominated by ultramasculine ‘bro-country.'Artists discussed include: Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Reba McEntire, Martina McBride, Gretchen Peters, The Chicks.Listen to the episode companion playlist

Editor's note: Basic Folk is pleased to introduce our listeners to one of our favorite podcasts by sharing an episode in our feed! The Other 22 hours, hosted by singer/songwriter Michaela Ann and producer Aaron Shafer-Haisse, talks to fellow musicians about the helpful tools and routines the use to stay creative, inspired, and sane while navigating a career built on their art. The thing I like about this podcast is that these conversations are between musicians. They're very real. The musicians share insights that go beyond normal bio questions. They talk about things that can actually translate into non musicians' lives. They dive in deep right from the start. I came across this podcast when they interviewed Leyla McCalla and was blown away by that conversation. Some other favorites have been William Prince, Gretchen Peters. Today we're going to share their conversation with Mary Chapin Carpenter. I hope you enjoy and subscribe and follow and support Aaron and Michaela on The Other 22 hours.Episode SummaryMary Chapin Carpenter is an 18x Grammy nominated, 5x Grammy winning, 6x platinum-selling singer-songwriter with over 16 albums and decades of touring so far in her career. We talk with Mary Chapin about her songwriting process, including her need for solitude and her practice of "song walking," we talk about how she still faces rejection even with all of her accolades and commercial success, how common and easy it is to personalize mistreatment from people in power (and how to combat that), and much more on this very candid final episode of Season 1.Episode NotesMary Chapin Carpenter is an 18x Grammy nominated, 5x Grammy winning, 6x platinum-selling singer-songwriter with over 16 albums and decades of touring so far in her career. Like what you hear? Feel free to support the Show!https://tiptopjar.com/americanapodcastWe have a very special guest in this episode. Today, we're diving into the rich tapestry of the extraordinary songwriter, Gretchen Peters. Growing up next to the legendary Greenwich Village folk scene, before moving to Colorado where she cut her teeth as a performer, and finally settling in Nashville at the height of the traditional country to pop country split in the 90's and early aughts. Peters' story is something that music journalists and authors could only dream of living. And during all this time, she has etched her name into the annals of American music history with her poignant lyrics and haunting melodies. In the early '90s, Peters released her debut album, 'The Secret of Life,' which quickly garnered attention for its lyrical depth and Peters' distinctive, emotive voice. Throughout her illustrious career, Peters has penned songs that resonate with a raw, emotional honesty and capture complexities of the human condition. Her songs have been cut by the likes of Martina McBride and Trisha Yearwood, and has been a longstanding advocate for musician's rights in an increasingly complicated industry that looks more and more like a battleground everyday. Having recently retired from touring, it's time to take stock of Gretchen Peters' immeasurable impact on music. Her dedication to storytelling has earned her a place among the most revered songwriters of our time. So join us today as we speak with Gretchen Peters about her serendipitous career, women's music in country and Americana, and whether or not there really is a difference between being a songwriter and being a performer.
A (relatively) in-depth analysis of The Secret of Life by the Nashville-based, New York raised Queen of Country Noir Gretchen Peters in (just over) fifteen minutes.Recorded (and written) by Peters in 1995-96, the song was then recorded by fellow country artist Faith Hill in 1997-98 as the fifth and final single from her album Faith. Peters included the original version of the song on her 1996 debut album of the same name and later added a new acoustic recording as a bonus track on her 2015 album Blackbirds.Beloved of UK audiences and championed by the likes of BBC Radio 2 presenters Terry Wogan and Bob Harris, Peters announced her intention to retire from touring, playing her final UK shows in May 2023, although she has said that she will continue to write and record. In this episode I am in discussion with Dr. Andrew Webber.I hope you enjoy the podcast and do leave feedback if you like what you you have heard.Mathew Woodall

Three shockingly different takes on a song written by the godfathers of outlaw country show us everything a country song can be, and then some. There are way more surprises than you think. Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In), originally by Jerry Lee Lewis, covered by The First Edition, and by Gretchen Peters. Outro music is Luckenbach, Texas, by Waylon Jennings.

If you don't know Gretchen Peters, I will bet you definitely know some of her songs. From Independence Day (Martina McBride), Cloud #9 (Bryan Adams), On A Bus To St. Cloud (Trisha Yearwood), Rock Steady (Bonnie Raitt)... the list goes on and on. So when I interviewed her for the first time (I was lucky enough to do it twice) I was READY. This is probably the interview I am the most proud of, we talked about sexism within the music industry, being an independent artist and finding your own path as a writer. We dig into the origins of one of her songs, "The Boy From Rye" and how it's the heart of her most recent album, Dancing With The Beast. Note: This interview was originally recorded and published in November 2019. ----more---- For two decades, Gretchen Peters (she/her) has been one of Nashville's most beloved and respected artists. "If Peters never delivers another tune as achingly beautiful as 'On A Bus To St. Cloud,'" People Magazine wrote, "she has already earned herself a spot among country's upper echelon of contemporary composers.” Inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in October 2014 by singer-songwriter Rodney Crowell, who called her "both a songwriter and a poet (who) sings as beautifully as she writes,” and said her song “The Matador”, "moved me so greatly, I cried from the soles of my feet”, Peters has accumulated accolades as a songwriter for artists as diverse as Etta James, Bonnie Raitt, The Neville Brothers, Patty Loveless, George Strait, Bryan Adams and Faith Hill. Her 2015 album, ‘Blackbirds', debuted at #1 on the UK Country chart and in the top 40 UK pop chart, and was awarded International Album of the Year and Song of the Year. In 2015, The Telegraph named her one of the greatest 60 female singer-songwriters of all time. Her latest album, Dancing With The Beast, was released on May 18, 2018. https://gretchenpeters.com

We had the pleasure of interviewing Gretchehn Peters over Zoom video.Grammy-nominated and CMA Award-winning recording artist Gretchen Peters has long been known for her songwriting. Folks like George Strait and Martina McBride cut her songs early on, and since then, she's penned hits for the likes of Trisha Yearwood, Pam Tillis, Bonnie Raitt, and Neil Diamond, and was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2014. But, until you've heard Peters' clear, expressive voice recite her own expertly-crafted melodies live on stage, you're only getting half of the story. Luckily for longtime fans and curious onlookers, Peters has just announced a brand new live album, The Show: Live from the UK—out now via Proper Music Group. Featuring 18 songs from Peters' beloved catalog The Show marks her first release since 2020's tribute to Mickey Newbury, The Night You Wrote That Song and her first live release since 2005's Trio. Culled from three performances from Peters' 2019 Strings Attached Tour—April 19th at St. George's, Bristol, UK; April 22nd at The De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill-On-Sea, UK; and April 23rd at The Apex, Bury St. Edmunds, UK—The Show features Peters' touring band—Barry Walsh (piano, vocals), Colm McClean (electric guitar, vocals), and Conor McCreanor (electric and upright bass, vocals—as well as an all-female, Scottish string quartet featuring Seonaid Aitken (violin), Amira Bedrush-McDonald (violin), Sarah Leonard (viola), and Alice Allen (cello). The resulting album feels like a you-had-to-be-there retrospective of Peters' illustrious career to date, framed with new-but-familiar arrangements focused on letting her songwriting shine. Have you noticed how crazy people have become? My hypothesis is that it's not everyone, but a minority of people are especially susceptible to mass psychosis. This episode talks about sociopathy, which psychologists describe as a personality disorder in which individuals have no conscience or sympathy for others. They seem to lack the characteristics of the human soul that we generally recognize as noble and selfless. I enlist my daughter, Gretchen Peters, to discuss whether there are people among us whose mental state prevents them from recognizing good and evil. We consult with Jesus over the parable of the sower of seeds and condition of the soil (and soul). --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bill-mundhausen/support

Escuchar audio

Welcome to Grey Matters Now Episode 30! My last episode with Mary Judd, the director of SongwritingWith:Soldiers (SW:S), left such an huge impact on me that I have not been able to stop thinking about it really felt like I needed to know more - more about the ripple affects, collective and community healing and collaborations. I became really interested in the perspectives of the songwriters and what the experience and process is like for them. I have had numerous conversations with my friend Will Kimbrough, who is a musician and part of the SongwritingWith:Soldiers team after returning from retreats. Our conversations are SO interesting and are kind of like de-briefs of his fresh experience. I soon realized this program has such a profound affect on the songwriters and that they also leave with new tools to take out into the world and that they too experience healing. I decided there is so much to this, and since the songwriter experience is not publicly discussed much, I wanted to do a whole episode about it. This episode is kind of like the B side of a record. It is not the single, the hit or the name of the album but it is part of the same album.…the same story. The B-side (or "flip-side") is a secondary recording that typically receives less attention, although some B-sides have been as successful as their A-sides. I asked Will how he would like me to introduce him re: his bio. and many projects Instead of listing his accolades, awards, albums, productions or famous people he has worked with, Will simply said "I have had a long and eclectic career, from punk rock bars to bluegrass festivals. Everything has always revolved around the song. I’m a songwriter." Will Kimbrough has spent a lifetime writing songs and performing them, and along the way becoming a respected recording artist, producer and musician. Will has made MANY records - solo and collaborative. His latest album is I Like It Down Here and his next release is Spring Break, a solo acoustic record in the tradition of Folkways and Vanguard folk records. Will's songs have been recorded by Jimmy Buffett, Little Feat, Todd Snider, Jack Ingram, Gretchen Peters and many many others. His production credits include Buffett, Doug Seegers, Todd Snider, Radney Foster and Steve Poltz. Will is a prolific writer and recording artist, a member of Willie Sugarcapps, DADDY and Emmylou Harris' Red Dirt Boys. NPR's Sound Opinions co-host Jim DeRogatis just named Shemekia Copeland's Uncivil War Best Album of 2020 - www.soundopinions.org/show/785 Jim says - "Uncivil War is both angry and empathetic, and that is a rare combination". He does a lot of work for SongwritingWith:Soldiers and has resumed a few, COVID-safe SW:S retreats and recently worked with combat veterans in Northern Virginia and Southern Arizona. SW:S is also partnered with the Warrior PATHH Program Will explains, "I have worked with Combat Veterans and other First Responders dealing with the affects of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) quite a bit since the program resumed this past Summer. Most gratifying and deep work." The relationship between illegal financial flows and state-level violence is present in conflicts around the world, and is especially pronounced in Afghanistan. In particular, the country’s thriving drug market based on the opium trade has proven to be a major economic factor that has been fueling the ongoing conflict. In this episode of Root of Conflict, Aishwarya Raje and Mwangi Thuita speak with Gretchen Peters, Executive Director of the Center on Illicit Networks and Transnational Organized Crime (CINTOC). Drawing on her role at CINTOC as well as her decades-long career as a writer and journalist, Gretchen talks through why the political economy of the War in Afghanistan is so poorly understood, and the connections between criminal networks, weakened institutions, and breakdown into disorder.

From the fears and concerns of a young girl, to the hopelessness of unrelenting poverty, to the laissez-faire attitude of a woman in the twilight of her life, Gretchen Peters creates characters that everyone can relate to. That's a gift and it's one displayed most prominently on her new album, Dancing with the Beast. She shared thoughts about the record and music from it during her exclusive session at this year's 30A Songwriters Festival in Florida.
GRETCHEN PETERS, after moving to Nashville in the late 80's, quickly established herself as both a talented performer and in-demand songwriter, writing songs for Martina McBride, Etta James, Trisha Yearwood, Patty Loveless, George Strait, Anne Murray, Shania Twain, and Neil Diamond. She also collaborated with Bryan Adams Peters won the 1995 CMA for Best Song with her breakout song “Independence Day”. Her new album ‘Dancing With The Beast' showcases her skill at creating characters who feel true-to-life within stories that are all too relatable in reflecting the times we live in. MARTY BROWN was born in Maceo, Kentucky and eventually made his way to Nashville, Tennessee to a record deal at MCA Records. He toured with acts such as Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, Hank Williams, Jr. and many, many more. After his recording years, he started writing hit songs for artists like the heart-felt and groovy “I'm From the Country and I Like It That Way” for Tracy Byrd. He recently also appeared on America's Got Talent and will have a new album out later this year on Plowboy Records. WoodSongs Kid: Shelby Callahan is a talented thirteen-year-old vocalist and guitarist from Lexington, Kentucky. Shelby performs Trisha Yearwood's breakout song “Independence Day” which was written by Gretchen Peters.
We're spending much of this hour with someone who's as thoughtful and articulate about her art as the art itself. Gretchen Peters is a lover of language. She has awe and appropriate respect for the power of words and healthy fear of their misuse. And while I would place her among the most literary of songwriters - Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan are among her heroes - there's nothing aloof or unreachable in her work. Her reputation in country music was secured by recordings and hits for George Strait, Trisha Yearwood, Faith Hill and Martina McBride. But she set out to be a performing songwriter and recording artist, and indeed she's built a devoted following. Peters's new album Dancing With The Beast takes up a lot of time in the conversation ahead. It grapples with the shock of the 2016 presidential election, the tumult in the country and the #MeToo movement. Its stories are ferocious and candid, but as always the music is gorgeous and easy on the ears if not always the heart. Also, we get to know Gretchen's friend and frequent co-writer Ben Glover, an exceptional Nashville based songwriter from the coast of N. Ireland.
Get the latest with singer-songwriter Keith Harkin (formerly of Celtic Thunder). Hear about his latest and upcoming music, the current tour, and his thoughts on record companies and keeping creativity and his vision front and center. Next, it's Grammy nominated singer songwriter Gretchen Peters. She's best known for writing the massive hit for Martina McBride, "Independence Day." She'll share the inspiration behind her latest album, "Dancing with the Beast," her creative process, and her thoughts on women singer-songwriters in the music industry - especially in Nashville.
I'm incredibly excited to kick of Season 2 by sharing this conversation with Tamara Saviano. Tamara has worn many hats over the course of her career, and worked in a variety mediums. The common thread throughout her work has been storytelling. We spend time talking about the process of writing her new book on legendary songwriter Guy Clark. I can promise you one thing….This episode is full of magical stories. Gretchen Peters didn't set out to write an album centered on death and mortality, but the songs on "Blackbirds" told her that's where they needed to go. It was a time in her life when she noticed the ratio of weddings to funerals shift from gaining to loss. Peters performed songs from her the CD and talked about the songwriting process when she visited BeeHive Productions and Folk Alley at Florida's 30A Songwriters Festival. Check out video performances of selected songs.
