On today's show is Missy Raines, one of the great bluegrass bassists out there, not to mention a fabulous singer and songwriter. Bluegrass bass playing is a funny thing - on the surface it seems simple. But there's a whole other level to it, and when you hear someone like Junior Huskey do it, or Mike Bub, or Dennis Crouch, or Missy Raines, they all play at that level. There's a way the really good players place their notes, there's the tone, and it all comes down to the bed that the bass players lay for the other players in the band to live in. And that's the hard part. Once you get a chance to play with someone of that calibre it becomes much clearer what great bassist brings to the table, and Missy is one of the best. She's been releasing albums under her own name since 1998, and her latest recording just came out a couple months ago - it's called “Highlander” and it's a killer record that features her band Allegheny as well as guests like Kathy Mattea, Michael Cleveland, Darol Anger, and Rob Ickes. Missy is from West Virginia, and she was lucky enough to grow up in an area that had a strong bluegrass scene that she got to experience first hand. She's lived in Nashville for a long time now, and is on the road alot these days. She's won multiple IBMA awards for Bass Player of the Year, and has performed with legends like Mac Wiseman, Peter Rowan and Josh Graves. Aside from her accomplishments in the bluegrass world, Missy swerved over into more experimental territory a few years back and had a band going called The New Hip, who made a couple of incredible records well worth checking out as well that feature her songwriting in a less traditional context. But these days she's pretty focussed on traditional bluegrass and has one of the best bands on the scene, so make sure you go see them if they come through your area. Beating the heat has been critically important this summer across the country. Just this past week a camper at Kanawha State Forest was treated for heat stroke. Park Superintendent Clark Sanford offered advice for those taking part in outside activity: “You want to pack at least one bottle of water for every two miles that you plan to be out hiking, and then to eat and to have proper salt intake as well,” he said. “Your body needs that salt to be able to hold onto the water to remain hydrated.” Sanford added that if you get in trouble and you don't have cell service, you should still use your phone to call 911. Many cell phones, in the case of an emergency, can connect with satellites to get help. Officials say it's critical to listen to your body. If something doesn't feel right, slow down, take a rest and find a way to cool down. With an ACM Top New Female Vocalist win and nearly 20 Canadian Country Music Awards, the chart-topping Carolyn Dawn Johnson chats about everything from her songwriting successes to her artist career to her co-writing with Chris Stapleton.PART ONEPaul and Scott dive deep on their opinions about the recently-announced Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction class of 2024.PART TWOOur in-depth conversation with Carolyn Dawn Johnson.ABOUT CAROLYN DAWN JOHNSONCanadian-born singer, songwriter, producer, and musician Carolyn Dawn Johnson moved to Nashville in the mid-1990s and started getting her songs recorded by artists such as Patty Loveless, Suzy Bogguss, Kathy Mattea, and Jo Dee Messina. Her breakthrough came in 1999 with Chely Wright's recording of "Single White Female," which hit #1 on the country charts. Wright's follow-up recording of Johnson's "Downtime" also became a Top 5 hit. Carolyn was named Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year by Music Row magazine in 2000 and landed a record deal of her own with the Arista Nashville label. Her self-produced debut, Room with a View, hit the Top 10 in the US and earned Gold status in Canada. The singles "Complicated“ and "I Don't Want You to Go“ were both Top 10 hits in the US. She won the Academy of Country Music's Top New Female Vocalist award and swept the Canadian Country Music Awards. The follow-up album, Dress Rehearsal, also debuted in the Top 10. To date, Carolyn has earned nearly 20 Canadian Country Music Awards for songwriting, performing, and producing. As an artist she has toured with Reba McEntire, Alan Jackson, Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban, and Merle Haggard. As a backup vocalist and musician she's toured with Ashley McBryde, Miranda Lambert, and Martina McBride. After a hiatus as an artist she has recently begun recording new music while continuing to enjoy success as a writer, including Chris Stapleton's "The Day I Die,“ a song Carolyn and Chris wrote together that appeared on his 2023 album Higher.
