Shelby Lynne is celebrating the 25th anniversary of her landmark classic album I Am Shelby Lynne, which won her a Grammy award for Best New Artist. We recently sat down with Shelby to discuss the evolution of her songwriting, from her early days in Nashville to her recent genre-defying "comeback" album Consequences of the Crown. PART ONEScott and Paul talk about their favorite single lyrical lines, lyrics that bug them from songs they otherwise like, and quibble over one of Kris Kristofferson's best-known lines. Plus, they call on listeners to submit their own choices for discussion on an upcoming episode. PART TWOOur in-depth interview with Shelby LynneABOUT SHELBY LYNNEShelby Lynne won the Grammy award for Best New Artist in the wake of her genre-bending and critically-acclaimed 1999 album, I Am Shelby Lynne. But it was actually her sixth studio album on an artistic path that took time to unfold. Lynne and her sister, fellow artist Allison Moorer, grew up surrounded by country music. As detailed in Moorer's gripping memoir, Blood, they were also surrounded by violence and trauma. Both found escape through music, with Lynne signing her first recording contract at the age of 19. Initially working with legendary producer Billy Sherrill, best known for his albums with Tammy Wynette and George Jones, Shelby released a series of albums from Nashville in the late ‘80s through the mid-‘90s. She won the Academy of Country Music's Top New Female Vocalist Award in 1991, and was nominated for the ACM's Top Vocal Duo of the Year honor with Faith Hill in 1996. Without any major hit singles, however, Shelby eventually took a break from recording. After moving to Palm Springs, California, and partnering with producer Bill Botrell in 1998, she changed direction and found new footing as an uncategorizable artist committed to artistic integrity. The result, I Am Shelby Lynne, has recently been re-released in a 25th Anniversary edition. Follow-up albums Love, Shelby, Identity Crisis, Suit Yourself, and the Dusty Springfield tribute Just a Little Lovin' were well-received precursors to Lynne launching her own record label. Her subsequent albums Tears, Lies and Alibis, Merry Christmas, Revelation Road, and I Can't Imagine all reached the Top 10 on Billboard's Americana/Folk chart, as did her 2017 collaborative album with sister Allison Moorer. Shelby has recently returned to Nashville and has collaborated with Ashley Monroe, Little Big Town's Karen Fairchild, and others to create her seventeenth album, an unflinchingly honest exploration of heartbreak, called Consequences of the Crown.

The Record Store Day Podcast with Paul Myers

Shelby Lynne's voice resonates with hard-won wisdom and the unseen scars of love and loss. After returning home to Nashville after years in Palm Springs, CA, she and a core unit of talented women collaborated on her stunning new album, Consequences of the Crown which her new label (Monument Records) accurately describes as "a haunting exploration of the labyrinth of human pain that emerges with grace." When this episode was recorded, the writers and actors strikes were both still going strong with no end in sight, so resident keyboardist for the Jimmy Kimmell Show, Jeff Babko, was able to find time in his normally very busy schedule to rap with me. In fact, the Kimmell show is just a piece of his crowded schedule, which includes being the touring pianist on stage with Steve Martin and Martin Short, in addition to composing for movie scores like the new Weird Al biopic, Toy Story 4, Encanto, but also recording with James Taylor, Jason Mraz, Shelby Lynne, Simon Philips, Sheryl Crow-- not counting the folks he's played with on Kimmell. He's a funny man, driven to make music with whomever and in whatever forum is available, but usually includes incredible musicians like Vinnie Colaiuta, Jeff Coffin, Matt Chamberlain, Mark Isham and many more. He's a podcast host for the Caffeinated Keyboardist, owns his own studio Tudor Tones and is generally just busy because what in the hell else is there in this life but to make music. He's got a new record called The Libretto Show with bassist David Piltch and is generally just ready to rip at all times.

Welcome to Part 2 of my interview with Vinnie Ciesielski! Before I say anything else, let me point out that the link I share to access the show notes during the episode is incorrect. The show notes for this episode are https://trumpetdynamics.com/trumpetvinnie2. I believe I left out the number 2 during the interview because I initially planned to have this be one giant episode, but wisely chose to break it into two parts. And what a part this is. Vinnie and I dove deep into the "why" of playing trumpet. The "How" tends to be rather superficial, which is why I don't have much interest in podcasts like that. But the "why" is what gets me excited, and Vinnie surely did not disappoint with his insightful comments in this one.Enjoy! What you'll hear in this episode:-More in-depth dialogue on the "good day and great day" concept...05:05-The need for healthy lifestyle for success on trumpet and overall quality of life...08:30-Self-loathing equates to loathing your environment...13:30-Why and how Vinnie has played with a rare condition that causes loss of feeling on the left side of his body...17:20-If you can feel your face, you're ahead of the game!...25:00-Shame is a wasted emotion...32:00-Keeping things real regarding the importance of trumpet...36:00-Adapting to radically changed physicality, and thoughtfully losing weight so it stays off...43:30-Music a salve for tremendous joy and intense loss...53:45-Are we "called" to trumpet?...58:45-A father's offhand comment while watching TV proves prophetic...01:03:30-Plus whatever your discerning ears deem worthy of your time and interest...Resources mentioned:Vinnie's websiteMy Fitness Pal appTrumpet Dynamics podcast with Beth PeroutkaAbout the Guest:Attending Towson University in Maryland, Vinnie Ciesielski majored in music performance on trumpet, which he has played professionally for over 50 years.Since coming to Nashville in 1992, Vinnie has played on thousands of recordings with artists such as Lyle Lovett, Travis Tritt, Tracy Byrd, Smokey Norful, Tanya Tucker, Glenn Frey, T.D. Born in 1919, Mississippi's Elmore Brooks took his father's last name and became arguably the most influential slide blues guitar player of the post-war era. As a sideman for Sonny Boy Williamson II (a/k/a/ Rice Miller), James' would write several songs made popular by Williamson including Look Over Yonder Wall and One Way Out. After serving in the military, stationed in Guam, like many from the agricultural south, James' moved north to Chicago and recorded most of his iconic songs for the Modern Recording label. James died in 1963 from a long-term heart ailment. Pacific St Blues & AmericanaApril 10, 20221. J Geils Band / Struttin' with My Baby 2. Harvey Brindell / Mississippi Medicaid3. In this episode we welcome the legendary Pete Wingfield to Hammersmith to discuss his career as a keyboard player, record producer and music journalist. We start by asking Pete about Soulbeat, the fanzine he started at Wellington College, and about the network of R&B fans in mid-'60s Britain. From there we learn about Mike Vernon's Blue Horizon label (and Chipping Norton studio); about Pete's 1967 trip to America, where he met Otis Redding at Stax studios; and about the Breakfast Special album that produced his big 1975 hit 'Eighteen with a Bullet'.Fast-forwarding to 1981, Pete tells Barney, Mark & Jasper about Sylvia Robinson, the Sugarhill Gang, and cutting Mel Brooks' rap hit 'It's Good to be the King' in a basement studio in Mortlake — the same place where he produced Dexys Midnight Runners' No. 1 hit 'Geno'. A brief discussion of Dexys and Searching for the Young Soul Rebels leads into recollections of touring with the reunited Everly Brothers, producing the Proclaimers' '500 Miles' and playing on Paul McCartney's 1999 covers album Run Devil Run.Clips from Cliff White's 1980 audio interview with New Orleans great Lee Dorsey provide the perfect excuse to express our abiding love of Lee and of Allen Toussaint's Crescent City soul sound. This week's Talkhouse Podcast features a couple of names you almost certainly know, because each of these guys has had a pretty incredible career in music: Richard Marx and Jakob Dylan. Marx, of course, wrote and performed some of the most indelible pop hits of the late '80s and early '90s, including “Endless Summer Nights,” “Hold on to the Nights,” and the super smash “Right Here Waiting,” which comes up in this conversation. But even as the era of mullets and frosted jeans faded, Marx couldn't be stopped—or rather Marx's songs couldn't be stopped. He's continued releasing music over the years, and his influence can be felt deeply to this day: Just check out the audio and visual vibe of John Mayer's latest album, which basically pays tribute. And it's not just music: Marx recently released a funny, candid memoir called Stories To Tell, in which he details some of the incredible memories he's made in the music business over the years. And that's where Jakob Dylan enters the picture, as you'll hear. Though the two didn't know each other, Dylan went on Joe Rogan's podcast to praise Marx's book, and a friendship was born. Dylan is no slouch in the music department, either—you can't be, with that family name. He's been the main creative force behind the Wallflowers for the past 30 years, releasing seven Wallflowers albums, two solo sets, and criss-crossing the globe. The latest Wallflowers record, Exit Wounds, just came out, and its lyrics and vibe are reflective of the times we're living in, which is to say it's a bit harrowing but also incredibly catchy. A bunch of the songs feature Shelby Lynne on backing vocals as well, which is a great bonus. In this chat, the two songwriters talk about process, about how writing a book is different than writing a song, a special moment Marx recently dedicated to his ailing mother, and how Barbra Streisand has no regrets about not recording Marx's biggest hit. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Richard Marx and Jakob Dylan for chatting.

在这期节目中,你还会听到 The Bad Seeds 队友,Mick Harvey 和巡演吉他手 Ed Kuepper 对 Nick Cave 歌曲的演绎;乐队伙伴的翻玩,与 Japandroids, My Morning Jacket 等晚辈带着致敬色彩的演绎相比,气质并不相同;乡谣音乐人同样钟爱 Nick Cave 那些温和、朴素的作品,Cat Power, The Walkabouts, Shelby Lynne 等人的翻唱,仿佛给原作换上了亲切、松软的外衣。 曲目单: Nick Cave - Red Right Hand (00:29) Primal Scream - Worm Tamer (04:52) Fever Ray - Stranger Than Kindness (09:26) Nick Cave - Stranger Than Kindness (11:37) Japandroids - Jack the Ripper (14:16) Arctic Monkeys - Red Right Hand (17:12) Nick Cave - All Tomorrow's Parties (20:16) Ed Kuepper - Do You Love Me (24:21) Cat Power - Breathless (28:05) Grant-Lee Phillips - City of Refuge (30:43) Johnny Cash - The Mercy Seat (33:20) Giant Sand - Red Right Hand (37:50) The Lemonheads - Straight to You (41:32) Mick Harvey - Come Into My Sleep (45:16) Nick Cave - I'm Your Man (47:49) Camille O'Sullivan - Jubilee Street (52:36) Mark Lanegan - Brompton Oratory (57:58) PJ Harvey - Red Right Hand (01:01:08) The Walkabouts - Loom of the Land (01:03:58) Shelby Lynne & Allison Moorer - Into My Arms (01:07:19) Nick Cave - Here Comes the Sun (01:10:23) My Morning Jacket - New Morning (01:13:19) Nick Cave & Shane MacGowan - What a Wonderful World (01:16:47) *题图设计:YOFAK *《周末变奏》WX听友群敲门群主:aharddaysnight *写邮件给主播:soulwedger@163.com *微博/网易云/小宇宙 @线性方舟

It was a concert by glam rock juggernauts Kiss that opened a 9-year-old Geoff Pearlman's eyes to the possibilities of a life in music. Guitar lessons soon followed, as did a series of high school rock and roll bands playing the usual Rush and Van Halen covers. But when most kids were picking traditionally sensible collegiate career paths, Pearlman turned into the wind and signed up at Boston's Berklee College of Music - a breeding ground for legitimate musicians and a unique place to learn the particulars of the craft. After all, a profusion of musicians can play some guitar, but it is a select few who put in the work to dig in and play the instrument beyond what's necessary to accompany themselves. A significant percentage of Berklee students leave before finishing a degree program, launching themselves into work opportunities - but Pearlman stuck around and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in professional music in 1991. He gigged in San Francisco for several years before settling in Los Angeles, a town with a rich history of talented sessions players. Pearlman's hard work continues to pay off, as his list of credits includes Norah Jones, Shelby Lynne, Jakob Dylan, Linda Perry, Syd Straw, George Drakoulias, Joan Osborne, Marc Ribot, Don Was, Disney's High School Musical albums, and music written for for the Travel Channel, The Food Network, Fuller House, Jag, and more. His most recent high-profile gig was playing guitar in the house band in the 2019 film Echo in the Canyon, a documentary about the fertile late 60s music scene in Los Angeles' Laurel Canyon. Echo in the Canyon found Pearlman sharing the screen and stage with some of the most respected and well-known musicians in history. Although Pearlman maintains a busy schedule working with other artists and producers, he continues to release his own albums to showcase his writing and performing. His new release, Lost in the Satellites, provides an interesting what-if glimpse into what modern pop music could sound like if the music industry hadn't been waylaid at the mumble rap exit. Lost in the Satellites is sonically rich and packed with great songs, inventive arranging, and performances by Pearlman and other musicians devoted to putting in the work necessary to be great at what they do.

Singer-songwriter Allison Moorer has recently released her 11th album, along with a companion memoir. They are both called Blood . They tell a story she's avoided talking about directly throughout her career. When Allison was 14 years old, her father killed her mother — and then himself — leaving Moorer and her sister, the singer Shelby Lynne, orphans.

My guest today is Pat Bergeson. Pat is an amazing guitarist, a natural who is at ease with virtually any style. His credits include Lyle Lovett, Shelby Lynne, Suzy Bogguss, Butch Trucks and many, many more. As Pat will tell you though, the one that is probably the game changer for him is the phone call he got from Chet Atkins that changed his life and career.   Not only a great guitarist, Pat is also a ridiculously great harmonica player. He plays chromatic harp on a diatonic harp, not an easy feat…this enables him to convert his  knowledge of jazz harmony and killer guitar chops onto another instrument. You'll hear this for yourself. Pat has his own solo records out to- check em out- the most recent one being “Hippy Dance”- you are listening to the title track right now. He also has plays duets with his wife, jazz singer Annie Sellick and they occasionally tour with Tommy Emmanuel. Catch em if you can you'll love it.  I'm so glad Pat was in town and available the day I called him up to do this. He's a great guy and fun hang and goes without saying an incredible guitar player. Throughout the interiew there are a few tunes we play together and you can hear Pat panned slightly right and myself on the left.  Hope you enjoy! Most musicians can readily tell you about their influences, but the best musicians can tell you who it was that influenced their influences; they're always going a step farther back in time and they know full well that all of us here in the current age are standing on the shoulders of the shoulders of giants. The genre of classic rock casts a long shadow, and six decades on from Chuck Berry, Bill Haley and Elvis Presley, teenagers of the new millennium are just as apt to want a turntable and a laptop as an electric guitar, but many songs from the heyday of rock and roll have found a second life in video games like Rock Band and Guitar Hero, as well as in beer commercials. Eli Wulfmeier grew up in Michigan, but he sounds like an apple that fell directly off the Allman Brothers' tree. On guitar, Wulfmeier's trick bag is full of tried and true rock and roll licks and he executes them with a smooth flair and tasteful approach that can at times lean toward the incendiary. Vocally, he shows an affinity for the amped up blue-eyed soul of the best legacy rock singers. After spending the last decade in California, honing his guitar chops by playing with the likes of Shelby Lynne, Joe Purdy, Leslie Stevens and Jonny Fritz, Wulfmeier has formed a new trio of his own to allow him to showcase his considerable talents as a songwriter, guitarist and singer. That trio, called Leroy From the North, has a style that is not quite jam band territory, but the three-piece format does allow him the flexibility to improvise and change arrangements on the fly. Wulfmeier hews close enough to the elemental building blocks of rock that his songs, singing and guitar playing sound comfortably familiar, and he's got enough talent in his approach that it still sounds fresh.

A lot of kids dream of a career in music, and when they do they often imagine themselves in the spotlight at center stage with thousands of eyes fixed on their every move, but there are many people making a living in music whose names are not on the marquee. In fact, for every Madonna, there are dozens of musicians who have played in her band over the years. If you want to work, learn and do everything you can - the diversification of skill sets is an essential way to get more gigs - especially given the luck factor involved in eking out a practical living in the arts. Lee Pardini is a top notch multi-instrumentalist who has taken this ethos to heart. He studied jazz piano in college at New York's Manhattan School of Music, but he also picked up the bass guitar along the way so he could play with a wider range of artists. And play, he has - Pardini has backed up artists like Shelby Lynne, Jonathan Wilson and Nick Waterhouse - along with just about everyone else in the pro circuit in the Los Angeles music community. What is it that Pardini brings to a band? Virtuosic chops, for starters, but perhaps even more importantly he brings an egalitarian perspective on music styles and an eager disposition. After all, nobody wants to ride around in a bus all summer with a jerk. Along with making everyone else sound good, Pardini is also an accomplished songwriter whose piano compositions are nimble and inventive. So the next time you're at a show, pay attention to those players in the dim lights; they may be the next headliner ticket you buy.
