"Sprinter" The Florida-born Cat Ridgeway is speeding into national prominence. Or, to be more specific, she's sprinting there. Ridgeway's new album Sprinter is an adrenalized blast of hook-filled rock and roll, howling blues and scruffy pop that's one of the most refreshing listens of the year. A commanding presence with charisma to burn, Ridgeway, along with her band the Tourists, are full of a howling punk-rock electricity that summons everyone from the White Stripes to the Foo Fighters. Now Ridgeway is a self-taught musician who plays harmonica, trumpet, trombone, mandolin, bass, piano and guitar and that's incredibly impressive, but having spoken to her, she has an autodidact streak that runs through her life. Hence the reference I made to coffee earlier, but I'll let Cat tell you all about that. Named Orlando's Best Singer-Songwriter for the last three years, Ridgeway has played with Houndmouth, Arcade Fire and Lucy Dacus and she's no stranger to playing music festivals around the country. She's a typhoon of positive energy and you're going to love her. www.catridgewaymusic.com (http://www.catridgewaymusic.com) www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) Stereo Embers Bluesky + IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

We had the pleasure of interviewing Bo Staloch over Zoom video! Capitol Records will release Bo Staloch's The Garden, a stunning six-song showcase of visceral alt-folk and Americana. Family means everything to the Austin-born, Nashville-based singer-songwriter – it was their unconditional love and support that encouraged him to pour his soul into music while he was still in high school. On the EP's profound title track, released today, Staloch pays it forward, declaring to the next generation, “When the sky falls down give the pieces to me / I'll hold you like the moon til you fall asleep.” Listen to “The Garden” HERE. Calling himself “the luckiest person in the world,” Bo Staloch explains the inspiration for his new single. “My family has always been the most important part of my life, and being surrounded by so much love and support, it's kind of impossible not to think of me being a parent someday. I actually think about my future kids a lot. It is a little weird that I'm 19 and I'm thinking about that, but I've seen how much effort my parents put into creating a space for me to flourish. So, I'm just like, ‘Whatever I'm doing right now, I'm really doing it for my kids.'”He wrote “The Garden,” which serves as a mission statement for the EP, at his family home. To help him mold The Garden, Bo teamed with producer Andrew Wells (Phoebe Bridgers, Teddy Swims, Halsey), working out of his Laurel Canyon-facing home studio. That secluded setting, steeped in folk-rock history, lent a peaceful atmosphere to some emotionally stormy material. Staloch now calls it his “favorite place in the world.” It felt like home. For the closing track, “Oh God, Were You Ever,” he teamed up with producer Joshua Block (Jamestown Revival, Leon Bridges).Staloch recently supported  Houndmouth on their U.S. tour. In May, he'll join Ashe on the road. Tickets are available here. Touring for his first time ever in 2024, Staloch sold out headline shows in London and Dublin and supported the likes of Wyatt Flores, Richy Mitch & TCM, John Vincent III and Hans Williams. The Luna Collective observed, “2025 is looking to be the year of Bo Staloch…Full of powerful acoustic guitar and heartfelt lyricism, Bo Staloch's music feels like it deserves to be listened to while sun-kissed and driving amongst the most cinematic of scenery…a special sonic blend of country, folk, and americana.” Atwood Magazine observed, “Bo Staloch basks in stomp-and-holler bliss…”We want to hear from you! Toupin made multiple appearances on David Letterman and Conan as well as toured internationally during her time with the band. Toupin has since released a live EP, “Moroccan Ballroom”, a self produced album “Magnetic Moves, and her newest creation, a mini-album, “Little Heart”, released in 2021. Having graduated from his hometown of Milwaukee and found acclaim with his self-titled debut, Buffalo Nichols, the singer is ready to branch out from the blues genre. On this episode of The Fred Minnick Show, the alt-blues band Houndmouth joins Fred for some whiskey sipping and lively conversation. Formed in New Albany, Indiana, in 2011, the band consists of Matt Myers, Zak Appleby and Shane Cody. On the show, they talk about touring, 10 years of being headquartered in downtown New Albany, they sip everything from Michter's 10 to 291 Colorado Whiskey and they perform two songs -- one of which is slated to be on their forthcoming new album. Whiskeys tasted: Michter's 10 Year (14:24) 291 Colorado Whiskey (23:40) Penelope Four Grain Bourbon (44:12) Peerless Rye (47:00) Old Fitzgerald 14 Year Bottled in Bond (55:46) EPISODE SUMMARY Fred and the members of Houndmouth talk about a wide variety of things, such as: Fred gives the band a moment to decide whether to perform before drinking the whiskey or after. It is noted that performing pre-whiskey would be a foreign experience; predictably, they choose post-whiskey. There's a quick discussion of thrift stores and haunted dolls. The band is headquartered in an old house in downtown New Albany which sits next to a fire station, making it sometimes difficult to record. They tell the story of how the band name came about, and it is directly related to the fact sound bleeds into the old house. Fred takes the band through his method of tasting bourbon. Fred says mindfulness - paying close attention to what you're eating or drinking - can work even for something as mundane as a McDonald's cheeseburger. Talk then turns to chicken sandwiches and later hot chicken. Because it's so freaking good. Fred then somehow waxes eloquent about Tanzanian cashews. The band agrees they've never tasted anything quite like the 291 Colorado Whiskey. Aspen staves will do that. (They loved it.) Fred talks about some of the many flavors he's encountered in whiskey: Drywall, plastic and even dead cat. The origins of Houndmouth, which first began to take shape in 2011, are explored. Interestingly, each of the original members primarily played guitar, so they were forced to diversify. The band performs a song at around the 37:00 mark. Fred gets to the Penelope Four Grain and the group already had consumed it. Oops. The Peerless Rye comes out. There is a discussion about the benefits of having a great mother-in-law. Before covid, Houndmouth toured so relentlessly that in one year they played 280 shows. They already drank the Old Fitz as well. As for the overall favorite? Penelope Four Grain was the winner ... which is why they essentially finished it before the show was recorded. Look for a new album from Houndmouth this spring. The band performs a song from the forthcoming album at around the 55:00 mark. Summary: Dr. Robert Centor’s Knowledge Food, Part 1.  This Halloween, the “Curse of Knowledge” is REAL!  So you think you can teach? This master clinician educator, known for “Centor’s Criteria,” schools us the most common errors made by medical educators and how to improve learner retention.  While we only scratch the surface, Season 1’s arguably penultimate episode should NOT be missed.  After all, how else are you going to learn about Pretty Pimpin’?  Stay tuned for Part Duex when we briefly review Pharyngitis and Dr. Watto finally learns about Lemierre’s Syndrome!  As always, you’re welcome. Clinical Pearls: Don’t fall victim to the “Curse of Knowledge!”  Remember that your students/residents do not know what you know! Effective rounding should include a healthy mixture of both table-top and bedside rounds. Feedback should be specific, timely (even immediate!), and focused on improvement.   Allow the learner to self-evaluate before providing specific feedback and invite all members of the team to provide collaborative feedback. Always remember that feedback should be positive as well as constructive. There are multiple courses available to further your own skills as a medical educator The physician-educator should embody the “servant leader” and prioritize medical education (the “service” you are providing). Consider blogging to improve your own writing! Dr. Centor’s “Take-Home” Points: The “Curse of Knowledge” is real -- never assume the basics are known. The attending physician should embody service before self. Dr. Centor’s playlist -- Matt Duncan, Lawrence, Saint Paul and the Broken Bones, Houndmouth, Kurt Vile Disclosures: Dr. Centor reports no relevant financial disclosures for this topic. Learning objectives: By the end of this podcast listeners will be able to: Understand the basics concepts that underscore effective feedback (specific, timely, and collaborative) Identify the tenants that underscore effective rounding Re-evaluate your own teaching style and consider training seminars to improve your skills as a medical educator Links from the show: Dr. Centor’s Blog -- http://www.medrants.com/ Dr. Bradley Sharpe’s profile -- http://profiles.ucsf.edu/bradley.sharpe Stanford Faculty Development Course -- http://sfdc.stanford.edu/ UCSF Workshop - “Developing Skills in the Art of Effective Feedback” -- http://meded.ucsf.edu/radme/developing-skills-art-effective-feedback Ten Tips for Receiving Feedback -- http://med-ed-online.net/index.php/meo/article/view/25141 Who should take statins? -- https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/to-your-health/wp/2016/10/04/who-should-take-statins-a-vicious-debate-over-cholesterol-drugs-side-effects/?postshare=1551475707596812&tid=ss_tw Kurt Vile - “Pretty Pimpin” -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=659pppwniXA 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die by Chip and Dan Heath

As we wander around the musical celebration, we continually meet up with our semi-regular co-hosts. So together we discuss the event and along the way build an impressive and wide-ranging soundtrack. And while we recount our evening spent with Sam Smith, we also mention... Unicron, Ben Affleck, being out of control, at the bourbon slushie tent, to this day one of the most tragic character deaths, anyone who sponsors a soccer game, Romania, on-stage having fun, Joel Schumacher, old person face, robot smoke comes out of their mouths and they fall down dead, facing your cell phone the wrong way, striving for crass commercialization, we're waiting to hear the destruction reports out of Switzerland any day now, better in a bar, cthulhu-level horror, south to drop off moron, everyone looks good, because they feel good, Reservoir Dogs, your boss was afraid to hurt your feelings by firing you, split-screen, I don't know if I'm getting older... or music is getting worse, that work of genius, young up and coming actresses, cheezy 80's music, saves the day... and promptly dies, henna for tweens, water is like 85% of existence, a youth-infested music festival, that's how we process music now... soundtracks and video games, acutely plebeian peasants, Diarrhea Planet, a Lovecraftian symphany... about a a Lovecraftian robot... from the most Lovecraftian of giant robot movies, more female-centric films, it was like that scene from Jaws, even more questions about Batman v. Superman, very aware of itself, as I've been told by a guy who has a can of Nitrogen in his back seat for the purpose of bourbon freezing, grunge settling in, body glitter, we could be like a bunch of Nascar drivers... except we're podcasters, they just don't wanna stop, that Christmas where the Germans and the Americans stopped shooting at each other... and played soccer, Wim Wenders, punishment for Amy Winehouse's dad,  Dope, listening as well as watching film, as seen on TV, if you are from their town, unrequited love, polite but not nice, Nightwing, St. Elmo's Fire, bright red horror, smashing me back in a lovely way, snare ticky tack, growing up Springsteen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, action happening in two different spots, taking a lot of weird risks, someone came up from behind him, things being out of his hands, that was in a Tony Hawk game, Lucio Fulci, storming out, the leaker, you're not over it if you're still saying it on the microphone, and remember kids... stay hydrated and use sunscreen. "If you use a song really, really well in a scene, that song will remind people of your scene for the rest of their lives." For more info on the fest, go to: http://forecastlefest.com/

Hey, during this episode, we manage to fix the buzzing! Yay! Like, really; during the middle of it! Anyways, it's two beers and five new releases this week: Lift Bridge Farm Girl, Aero Flynn, Sarah Bethe Nelson, Sasha Siem, Deschutes Chainbreaker White IPA, Kendrick Lamar, and Houndmouth. Becca and Josh don't agree on everything this week (but then again, do they ever agree on everything?). We've got some folk infected electronica, a 60's Europop/garage rock hybrid, some complicated orchestral Tom Waitsish stuff, what is so far considered the best album of the year by many critics, and a band that takes after The Band. Yeah, a band that harkens back to The Band. A band that is The Band, how many times do I have to say that? As always, check out our Spotify playlist. Show notes and links: Lift Bridge Brewing Co. Attack of the Killer Soundtrack #20 - Attack of Purple Rain 2 We’re back to round out this year, the 30th (Pearl) anniversary of the movie Purple Rain, by assembling the second half of our massive retrospective on Prince and the iconic soundtrack for the film.  And since this has been a year-long on-going process, we check in with several previous guests to get their thoughts on the Purple Rain soundtrack. Special guests include: Lisa Loeb, Zak Appleby and Shane Cody from Houndmouth, Simon, Mark and Thomas from The Wans, Sarah Teeple Swain and Jaxon Swain from The Ladybirds as well as many other performers and Prince fans from ARTFM’s 30th anniversary party. Together we share memories of seeing the movie and experiencing Prince over the years. And as usual, along the way, we also build an amazing, personalized soundtrack.  And somewhere around when our host declares himself the Viceroy of Rock and Roll, we also mention… the dynamic vortex of energy, 1984, an ethereal Hobbit, Diamonds and Pearls, similar but equally different, something like Star Search, the guitar never came down, more then life itself, maybe that lady will hook up with me, cassette tape, Showcase Cinemas, Zappa, Under the Cherry Moon, slightly out of tune bells, you might end up with a baby… or blueberry pancakes, oddly way too sensual, the secret knock, what would you even say his particular genre is? Sexy, grind-pop with lace cuffs, Raspberry Beret, Little Red Corvette, everyone’s got a single tear in their eye, hissy fits, popping the top, that’s how we gett off, weird erotic, getting into the fort, the king of rock pop and soul, Sweden, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, I hope he sees this and he’ll marry me, man panties, writing on the ground, picked up the phone… dropped it on the floor, 1999, He’s got a really good color palette, she always got to the cool stuff a little before me, Hendricks, everything about him feels a little like a cartoon, annals of rock and roll, technologically challenging and a Prince neck tattoo.  “I recall seeing it in middle school and it really pretty much blew my suburban mind. And I’ve loved Prince ever since.”

Attack of the Killer Soundtrack #14 - Attack of Houndmouth This episode we are coming to you "live" from Forecastle fest 2014. And as we build our own group effort soundtrack, we also visit special guest Angryblue who designed this year’s Forecastle poster. Plus an extra special guest appearance by artist - Miss Happy Pink.  Then we sit down with this week’s special guest co-hosts - Zak Appleby and Shane Cody from Houndmouth. We discuss how the band came together as well as their musical influences and how they spill over into movies. Plus we get some input from their manager Chris on how he helped them break into the music scene.  And as we assess the aesthetics of our guest’s nipples, we also bring up… The Rolling Stones, The Band, skull dungeon, rude hosting experiences, Louisville vs. New Albany, loving sugar, being addicted to podcasts, luck and practice, leaky sausage patties, Seinfeld, Boomtown, speed skating in Florida, playing poker, doing all the moves, playing in the Ed Sullivan Theater, riding across America, a sad stomach, Parliament, dress warm, The War on Drugs, Sharknado, the sincerity of weird and awkward, stalking Salma Hayek, I’ll put mops on my feet, proverbial balls, dancing with cheesecake, bandana and piano… you can’t go wrong, South by Southwest, The Venture Brothers, Delta Spirits, lumpy nipples, Duets, there’s not enough boogie skating these days… that’s the problem, being on Letterman, The Sugar Hill Gang, where the wolverine attack happened, Lonesome Dove, four wheels and as fast as you can go…, being on Conan, Tara Reid, having multiple kids, being indecisive, the life of a speed skater and I’m castle freak… what’s up? “It’s funny how songs are related to scenes in movies… It’s like, well that’s the perfect f-ing song right there. There’s nothing else I wanna hear… at this point in time.”  For more on Forecastle, go to: http://forecastlefest.com/ - For more on Houndmouth, go to: http://houndmouth.com/ For more on Angryblue, go to: http://angryblue.com/  - For more on Miss Happy Pink, go to: http://www.misshappypink.com/
