When the Canadian singer-songwriter Basia Bulat was a kid, she felt embarrassed by the Polish disco music her dad listened to. But now that she's a parent herself, she's found a new appreciation for her parents' taste in music. It even inspired a tune on her latest album, “Basia's Palace.” Basia joins Tom Power to talk about the album, the Polish music that soundtracked her childhood, and how she also drew inspiration from video games.
In this episode, we get to meet singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist Basia Bulat. Basia just released a brand new album - the lovely Basia's Palace - in February, and in this conversation, we go deep into it. The process of making it (which included a mostly-remote workflow with producer Tucker Martine), the themes, the desires for this project, and more. We also take a dive into the world of video games, especially old games and their beautiful midi soundtracks, which were a surprising touchstone for Bulat on this LP. (Paging fans of Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, and the like!) We take time to mention U.S. Girls, too, a band that Bulat has been associated with for years. It's a fun, free-flowing conversation, full of gratitude and love and good vibes, if I do say so myself. Thank you for listening.
Basia Bulat is a multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter based in Montreal. Since 2007, she has recorded 7 records and toured the world extensively. Her newest release, Basia's Palace is out now via Secret City Records. In this episode, Basia explains her lifelong attraction to Montreal and what motivated her to finally move there from her hometown of Toronto. She shares her experience of growing up in a musical household with an ultra-supportive mother whose values emphasized the importance of not taking anything for granted and approaching all opportunities seriously. Basia tells us why Jim James encouraged her to dive deeper into production, how she wound up living in her recording studio and how her childcare schedule played a role in the writing of the new record. Joe and Basia discuss how a problem-solving mind set and self-induced limitations influence performance. Basia tells us how she retained the spirit of the demo on Basia's Palace, Joe learns about the Polish pop genre Disco Polo and we hear couple new tunes. Pues nace un nuevo proyecto que espero que me aguantéis al otro lado porque me quedaba otra de mis pasiones culturales por unir a este podcast de “Críticos en Serio”: La música. Con una diferencia. Nunca me he especializado en ello.

Basia Bulat is a Canadian folk singer-songwriter. Born in Toronto into a family of Polish immigrants, music was always a close presence in the family home: her mother taught piano and guitar. After graduating with a degree in English literature from the University of Western Ontario, she began to pursue music as her own career path. Her debut album, Oh, My Darling was released by Rough Trade in 2007, and blended traditional folk with modern sensibilities. The record garnered critical acclaim and set the tone for a career marked by emotional depth and melodic richness. Known for her intimate live performances, my guest has earned a devoted international following and multiple award nominations, cementing her place as a vital voice in contemporary folk music. Her new album, Basia's Palace, is released later this week, and was produced in between bouts of playing RPGs. Be attitude for gains. https://plus.acast.com/s/my-perfect-console. Hosted on Acast.

This week's “back by popular demand” program features Canadian singer-songwriter Patrick Watson, who grew up in Montreal; people often compare his art-music sensibilities with those of Rufus Wainwright or Gregory Alan Isakov. Also joining us is another Canadian singer-songwriter (and returning eTown visitor) Basia Bulat. Basia shares songs from a recent album, produced by My Morning Jacket's Jim James. And we'll have an inspiring conversation with this week's eChievement Award winner, a young man from West Virginia helping coal miners who've lost their jobs because of automation or mine closings find meaningful work and solid income so they can support their families. From The Cat Came Back, Polly Wolly Doodle, We're Gonna Shine, to You Can Do It (If You Try), once you hear Fred's songs, you'll be singing along all day. Fred Penner has been the soundtrack to so many kids' lives and now those kids (myself included) are raising their kids on his music! His positivity and upbeat music is fun to listen to for those young and old. His songs are about encouragement, love, kindness, feelings and being positive. It was my sincere honour to interview Fred Penner for this episode. In this episode, we talk about his 13th album, Hear the Music, current tour, his views on the state of parenting and families today, raising his own kids, how he creates his music and the messages in his songs. It's the most wonderful conversation that I know you will enjoy as much as I did. It was the perfect way to celebrate my 150th episode of Parenting our Future! As Canada's foremost family entertainer, the genial singer/songwriter really has nothing left to prove. Witness his 12 previous albums with their 10 JUNO Award nominations and three wins. See also Fred's 12 seasons (and nearly 950 episodes!) hosting the hit CBC TV show, Fred Penner's Place. There are also his performances alongside luminaries including (but not limited to) Gordon Lightfoot, Burton Cummings, Randy Bachman, Raffi, Sharon Lois & Bram and Buffy Sainte-Marie; his status as the first kid's performer to headline the Los Angeles Amphitheater; his honourary doctorates and his prestigious Member of the Order of Canada and Member of the Order of Manitoba. Oh, and let's not forget his winning turn as emcee of the cutting-edge 2015 Polaris Music Prize or his altruistic, globe-trotting work as an Ambassador for World Vision. All fabulous and notable. But at the end of the day, Fred loves making music and connecting with audiences of all ages. And so, despite a resume as long as it is glittery, Fred Penner is set to return with lucky album number 13, Hear The Music. Hear The Music features a roll call of marquee Canadian talent including (but not limited to) Ron Sexsmith, Alex Cuba, Basia Bulat, The Good Lovelies, Terra Lightfoot, Afie Jurvanen (a.k.a Bahamas) plus backup vocals from Fred's own family, all tethered to the sterling production of long-time collaborator Ken Whiteley. Says Fred: “Hear The Music brings me together again with my dear friend, producer Ken Whiteley, who so lovingly guided me through the process of making this album. I am honoured to have worked with him and the wealth of passionate, talented musicians who provided their creativity and support on this exciting project!” With 14 songs played by an acclaimed roster of musicians (jazz bassist George Koller, saxophonist Mike Murley) and with Fred himself on guitar, ukulele, harmonica, flute and jawharp, Hear The Music truly has something for everyone. Actor and filmmaker Tyler Perry tells us why it was time to bring Madea out of retirement for his latest movie, A Madea Homecoming. Filmmaker Zacharias Kunuk discusses his new animated short, Angakusajaujuq: The Shaman's Apprentice, and the importance of preserving Inuit culture through film. Singer-songwriter Basia Bulat talks about reimagining a selection of her old songs on her latest album, The Garden.
On today's episode, I talk to musician Basia Bulat. The daughter of Polish émigrés, Basia was born and raised in Toronto's Etobicoke neighbourhood and grew up listening to her mother's piano students. She attended the University of Western Ontario where she received a degree in English and began an MA in English at Western in 2006 but moved to Montreal to record "an audible memory" of her time there which resulted in her debut album. Since then, she has recorded five more albums, is a three-time Polaris Music Prize finalist, and has been nominated for three Juno Awards. Her latest album is an orchestral reimagining of a number of her songs entitled The Garden, and like the rest of her work, it's great! The past two years have afforded us all plenty of time to reflect – for better and for worse. For all of those who've devoted pandemic hours to reaching into past and wondering how we might change the past, given the chance, The Garden presents an ideal metaphor. Over 16 tracks, Basia Bulat revisits her past, breathing new life into old songs with the aid of a band and string arrangements. It's an opportunity for the singer-songwriter to cover her work as she has countless others, from Daniel Johnston to The Strokes. The singer-songwriter joins us to discuss given birth during a global pandemic, the importance of remaining present and the music of Alice Coltrane.

It's a power hour of tremendous ladies (sorry to be so gendered about it, not everyone on the playlist identifies that way!). Let's call it a celebration of a higher vocal range? Listen in to hear Neko Case take on a Sparks song, Julie Doiron reunite in the 00's with Eric's Trip, recall the nights Basia Bulat and Martha Wainwright came to Meaford Hall and Fiver played the golden town's Home + Home Fest. Revisit a classic by Doctor of Fine Arts and Summerfolk alumni Buffy Ste. Marie, check in with local songstress Brianna McGowan, regret the time I missed seeing Weather Station (and Neko for that matter) at the Avening Community Centre. Get in the groove with Frazey Ford, and hear some gems from Elecric Eclectics alumni Jennifer Castle, Mary Margaret O'Hara and U.S. Girls. La La Land has been home to many local and national recording artists – My Morning Jacket, Ray Lamontagne, Horse Feathers and Basia Bulat among others. Anne is originally from Montreal, Canada. She got her musical start playing drums at 15, eventually touring internationally with electronic act TR/ST after years of national tours with Canadian acts. These days, she spends most of her time in the studio recording, producing and sharing the magic of record making with artists like Murder By Death, Bonnie Prince Billy, GRLwood, Joan Shelley, Strand of Oaks, By the Grace of God, and Rachel Grimes. She has also worked on albums by Ray Lamontagne, Jake Shears, Emma Ruth Rundle and White Reaper. Anne has worked with and learned from producers Kevin Ratterman, Jim James and Glyn Johns. Anne loves all styles of music: rock, country, experimental, pop, hip hop, and everything in between. She is always excited to help musicians craft and share their vision, whether new or established acts. Her production style has been called organic and intimate. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tophillrecording/support
Episode 25 The Hammond Novachord—An Early Synthesizer Playlist Milt Herth, “Basin Street Blues” from Basin Street Blues / Twelfth Street Rag (1937 Decca). Organ solo played on the Hammond Electric Organ. An example of the electro-mechanical organ sound, for comparison to the other tracks recorded using the Novachord. Public Domain. “Intermission Music,” Gone With The Wind (Music From The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack As Monophonically Recorded In 1939), Max Steiner. This comprises two short works, one for the beginning of intermission (when the lights went up and everyone headed for the concession stand and bathrooms) and one for the end of intermission (when the lights went down). The music was recorded in 1939 for the movie theater. Vera Lynn (vocal), “Wish Me Luck (As You Wave Me Goodbye)” from A Mother's Prayer At Twilight / Wish Me Luck (As You Wave Me Goodbye) (1939 Decca). UK recording with Arthur Young on the Novachord. A dexterous recording by Young who explored the rhythmic textures that were possible on the instrument. Collins H. Driggs, “In a Persian Market” from Cascades Of Melody (1941 Victor). Novachord solo. Collins H. Driggs, “The Blue Room” from Cascades Of Melody (1941 Victor). Novachord solo. Collins H. Driggs, “Song of the Islands” from The Magic of the Novachord (1941 Victor). Novachord solo. Fred Feibel, “Rose Room,” from Novachord Solos (circa 1941 Columbia). Novachord solo. Herb Kern and Lloyd Sloop, “Dancing Tambourine” from Treasure Chests of Transcriptions for the Home (1949 Tempo). Hammond Electric Organ, Herb Kern; Hammond Novachord, Lloyd Sloop. Herb Kern and Lloyd Sloop, “Twelfth Street Rag” from Treasure Chests of Transcriptions for the Home (1949 Tempo). Hammond Electric Organ, Herb Kern; Hammond Novachord, Lloyd Sloop. Jerry Goldsmith, “It's Gotta Be A World's Record” from Our Man Flint (Original Motion Picture Score) (1966 20thCentury Fox). Novachord being put through at least four types of voicings as the tune progresses. The sounds are distinctly presented as solos. Jerry Goldsmith, “Lost in Space” from In Like Flint (Original Motion Picture Score) (1967 20th Century Fox). The Novachord is heard for a short sequence about 16 seconds into this track and then again beginning at about 1:16 where is consists of a rhythmic bed for the rest of the track. A theremin is heard in the closing seconds. Christopher Komeda, “The Coven” from Rosemary's Baby (Music From The Motion Picture Score) (1968 Dot). Paul Beaver played the Novachord on many tracks, mostly for effects. In this case, the Novachord plays a persistent drone rhythm throughout the track with other instruments played on top of the mix. It is sometimes hard to tell the effects that can be attributed to the Novachord once we get to this era of multitrack recording and studio effects. The Mystic Moods Orchestra, “Sunny Goodge Street” from Emotions (1968 Philips). Paul Beaver's Novachord (calliope sound) played by Lincoln Mayorga. Most people noticed Meg Remy's U.S. Girls project when she released her last two records, Half Free (2015) and In a Poem Unlimited (2018) on the powerhouse 4AD record label, but she's been releasing records since 2008. The American-born Remy makes a home in Toronto and has done an amazing job of harnessing that city's native talent. I describe Remy as the ringleader of U.S. Girls--which she says is accurate--because she harnessed the talent the more than 20 friends and musicians who worked on her current record, In a Poem Unlimited. We hung out in her tour van as she waited to go on stage at Vancouver's Biltmore Cabaret. Why is Meg the only person in her eight person touring band who hasn't bought any vinyl during the tour? Which president inspired her song "Mad As Hell"? (It's not the one you think.) What's it like for a pacifist to write a song about two women planning to murder their abusers? What does Meg call Basia Bulat? Which Toronto based artist would Remy like to sing the "That Boy Is Mine" duet with? Which track from In a Poem Unlimited does the band not play live and why? You'll have to listen to find out! Tracks played on the radio edit of the show... 1) U.S. Girls, In a Poem Unlimited (2018) "Pearly Gates" 2) U.S. Girls, In a Poem Unlimited (2018) "Mad As Hell" 3) U.S. Girls, In a Poem Unlimited (2018) "Velvet 4 Sale" 4) U.S. Girls, Half Free (2015) "Damn That Valley" 5) U.S. Girls, U.S. Girls on KRAAK (2011) "State House (It's a Man's World)" 6) U.S. Girls, U.S. Girls on KRAAK (2011) "The Boy Is Mine" (Brandy/Monica cover) ** 7) U.S. Girls, In a Poem Unlimited (2018) "Incidental Boogie" ALL songs CANCON except **

Fred Penner is one of Canada’s most beloved entertainers, and he’s back with a new album called Hear the Music, which has earned rave reviews from Andrew's two-year-old son. It features quite the cast of guest collaborators, including Ron Sexsmith, Basia Bulat, Alex Cuba, Bahamas, Terra Lightfoot, The Good Lovelies, and more.
