Today’s podcast is one of a regular series of deep dives in to the commercial landscape in a particular sport. Each sport faces challenges that are common to all, but also there are specific differences that make them unique, this might be the commercial structure, the ownership, the political balance between club and country for example, or the role of private equity, which is certainly a feature of any current rugby business conversation. So to get in to the details, I sought the opinions of two people who have held senior commercial roles in the sport. Sophie Goldschmidt and Murray Barnett. Sophie Goldschmidt was formerly chief commercial and marketing officer at the Rugby Football union in England. She now lives in Santa Monica, having become CEO of the World Surf League. Before that Sophie was joint managing director of CSM Sport and Entertainment, and has held roles at the (NBA), the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) and Adidas. From 2013 to 2016 Murray Barnett was chief commercial officer at World Rugby, the game’s global governing body, a period sandwiched between a long career at media giant ESPN and more latterly F1.
Renegade Thinkers Unite: #2 Podcast for CMOs & B2B Marketers
How can a brand save the world? They could do something flashy, like repel an alien invasion or topple Godzilla, or they could do something real and substantive, like the World Surf League. When the WSL isn’t helping pro surfers shred the next big curl (are we saying that right?) or giving sports fans a great way to soak up some rays, they’re preparing for the future. As a sport deeply intertwined with the environment, that means committing to going carbon neutral. Sophie Goldschmidt, CEO of the WSL, has helped this goal permeate the entirety of the organization, and has noted how crucial it is to have a brand purpose worth rallying behind. On this episode, she discusses her athletics-centered marketing career, from Adidas, to the World Tennis Association, the NBA, and Rugby Football Union, as well as her commitment to brand purpose, engaging with the customers, effective company leadership, and more.
With the final print edition of 2018 put to bed, SportsPro magazine editor Michael Long rejoins editor-at-large Eoin Connolly to discuss a busy fortnight in the sports industry. On the agenda: whether the Copa Libertadores heralds a globe-trotting future for club soccer; a new man with a big job at the IAAF; Seattle's NHL return and the XFL's comeback; and what the experiences of Raheem Sterling, American gymnasts and Jess Varnish tell us about the growing power of the athlete voice. Then the well-travelled World Surf League chief executive Sophie Goldschmidt, the cover star of issue 103, shares her thoughts on a fast-emerging sport, its environmental responsibility, and the potential of wave pool technology.
The birth of GolfTV | the death of MP & Silva | the charm of Shahid Khan | equal pay & Facebook ups and downs in surfing | the Phil Taylor-shaped hole in darts | the future of the sports consumption experience. David Cushnan and James Emmett reflect on another fortnight of change across the global sports industry, including the launch of the Discovery-PGA Tour joint venture OTT vehicle GolfTV, the final demise of rights agency MP & Silva, and Shahid Khan's withdrawn offer to buy Wembley Stadium from the FA. Later, we hear from three CEOs with very different challenges ahead of them: Sophie Goldschmidt (starts at 14.31), the former WTA, NBA, RFU, and CSM executive who has been CEO of the World Surf League (WSL) for the past 13 months; Matt Porter (starts at 27.16), the Matchroom Sport Director who has been CEO of the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) since 2008; and Miheer Walavalkar, the co-founder and CEO of LiveLike, which launched in 2015 as a VR company in sport but has evolved to provide full immersive broadcast experiences without the need for headsets. On the conversational agenda: - Making changes at the WSL: new formats, new calendar, new broadcast products, and a new, equal pay structure; - Working through live streaming technical challenges; - Ten years of globalisation at the PDC; - Why the Phil Taylor-shaped hole isn't as big as it once would have been; - The future of sports broadcasting and media consumption and why what we have today is not sustainable.
