Presentatie: Robert Denneman
Ever wish you could sit down with permie elders to hear their take on the current chaos; what to do, where to live, and whether it's really that bad in the grand scheme of things? Well just call me Genie cos this convo with permaculture educators and radical homemakers Ian Lillington and Marita Zeh will deliver.Ian and Marita live in a solar passive straw-bale home on the edge of Castlemaine, Victoria, surrounded by fruit and nut trees and veggie gardens, where students come to see – and feel – what it is to be wrapped in abundance. And this is where I found them, on a sunny autumn morning, in the cosy warmth of their kitchen, dealing with masses of peaches, pistachios and zucchini. “I was looking for a way to move beyond survival work and into something that could support a real future.” Liz Looper spent years in the cycle of low-wage work, juggling the pressures of motherhood and constant financial uncertainty. She knew she needed a change, but like many, she didn't realize the door to the skilled trades was wide open for her. On today's episode of the America's Work Force Union Podcast, Looper joins us to share her inspiring transition into a first-year apprenticeship with Painters District Council 30 (PDC 30) and the North Central Illinois Finishing Trades Institute (NCIFTI). What we discuss in this episode: The Turning Point: How a simple social media post and support from Goodwill led Liz to a life-changing pre-apprenticeship program. Breaking Barriers: Liz's experience entering a male-dominated field and finding a community of women already thriving in the trades. The Union Advantage: Why the "full package"—including livable wages, retirement security, and essential benefits like pregnancy leave—makes the IUPAT a game-changer for families. A Message to Others: Why it is never too late to start a career that provides a path to the middle class, regardless of your age or background. Liz's story is a powerful testament to the fact that with persistence, the right training, and union support, a stable and purposeful career is within reach.

He explains why “Santa Claus isn't coming to town” during capital projects and why discipline and rigor are essential as projects shift from construction teams to operational stakeholders. The conversation dives into the reality of managing end-user requests during active projects, balancing expectations, and avoiding scope creep that can derail timelines and budgets. Jeff also highlights the importance of strong leadership alignment when addressing deferred maintenance, and how executive support can make the difference between reactive fixes and strategic long-term planning.Healthcare capital projects do not end at substantial completion. Success depends on operational readiness, clear governance, and leadership support. This episode explores how facilities teams can apply rigor, manage expectations, and ensure projects deliver long-term value once they transition into daily operations.

Today, we're sitting down with two of the many people behind one of New York City's most beloved thrift institutions — Housing Works. Housing Works is a mission-based organization born from the AIDS crisis, fighting for inclusive care, social justice, and an end to homelessness and the AIDS epidemic. Their thrift shops — nine locations across New York City, plus a bookstore café and online ecommerce shop — aren't just places to find incredible secondhand treasures. They're also the engine that funds life-saving services for New Yorkers, rooted in the belief that housing is healthcare. Daniel Rodriguez has been with Housing Works for nearly two decades. As Director of Operations, he has helped shape the organization's thrift enterprise, and oversees its operation from the shop floors to the annual events to the online auction site, developing the way Housing Works prices, merchandises, and tells the story of the pieces that come through its doors. Emily McKay is the Processing & Curation Manager which means she leads the Housing Works Processing and Distribution Center out in Long Island City — the behind-the-scenes warehouse hub where the majority of the organizations donations are sorted, curated, and transformed into the beautiful collections that stock the many city shops and headline the annual events. A former luxury consignment boutique owner who has earned her master's in fashion management at Parsons since her last time on this show, Emily brings a rare blend of expertise to the work of curating collections at scale. On today's episode, we get to explore the magic of what it actually takes to run a thrift enterprise of this size — the stories that come through the donation bags, the philosophy behind their curation, the unique role Housing Works plays in the iconic NYC vintage scene, and the annual 'Best of Spring' event that's happening right now across Housing Works locations. This one is for all of us who've ever believed that a great piece deserves another chapter. Let's dive right in. DISCUSSED IN THE EPISODE: [5:15] Daniel has been a part of the vintage and secondhand scene in New York since the late 90s — shopping at iconic spots like Screaming Mimi's, Cheap Jacks, Andy's Cheapies, Starstruck, and Rags-A-Go-Go. [8:25] He started at Housing Works as a manager of several of the thrift stores, eventually becoming senior merchandising manager and developing the organization's pricing philosophy and visual merchandising. [12:15] How Housing Works has grown since it was founded in response to the AIDS crisis — from a carriage house on 18th Street in 1992 to nine shops, a bookstore café, annual events, and an online shop. [17:00] How the resale boom changed how Housing Works approaches donations and sales strategy. [20:00] Emily McKaydescribes what it's like to walk into the PDC — the Processing and Distribution Center in Long Island City — and what her team does every day. [24:30] What it's like to curate donations at scale — developing material knowledge, sorting by gut instinct, and routing pieces to the right stores and events. [30:17] What shoppers can expect at Best of Spring this month. [36:20] Some of the most unique and historically significant collections that have come through Housing Works — including a Patti Smith art auction, an Andy Cohen Clubhouse event. [37:40] Emily reflects on how universally adored Housing Works is in New York City [42:30] Daniel and Emily share their personal favorite Housing Works finds. In this episode, Jerry Bradshaw discusses: What judges are looking for during the PSA Carjack Exercise. Safety precautions and training progressions for decoys, dogs, and trainers. Keeping your dog focused in the right place. Rewarding, capping, and knowing your dog's limits. Key Takeaways: In training, you should be training in neutrality as you prepare for your PDC. Just because they have the skills in the exercise does not mean they are prepared for the neutrality between exercises. If you are able to, get a vehicle to train with your PSA club on these Carjack Exercises. There are a lot of progressions you can do as you work up to the full exercise. It is the first impression of the aggression that's going to catch the judge's eye. Spend time focusing on transitions. Even in PDC, there are transitions you can work on. A good transition can help you be well prepared. "One of the big mistakes I see is rushing into the vehicle without doing the proper neutrality to the vehicle when they're younger, not doing the proper neutrality to the vehicle, where they now have to experience the bite work, in addition to the unstable footing, and in addition to the enclosed area, the tight space of the vehicle. All of these things impinge on the dog's experience during that carjacking exercise." — Jerry Bradshaw Episode References: Josh Kirby at Kirby K9 / Demanet: www.k9irby.com More information on the Kynology Seminar with Dr. Stewart Hilliard: https://kynology.org/ Get Jerry's book Controlled Aggression on Amazon.com Contact Jerry: Website: controlledaggressionpodcast.com Email: JBradshaw@TarheelCanine.com Tarheel Canine Training: www.tarheelcanine.com YouTube: tarheelcanine Twitter: @tarheelcanine Instagram: @tarheelk9 Facebook: TarheelCanineTraining Protection Sports Website: psak9-as.org Patreon: patreon.com/controlledaggression Slideshare: Tarheel Canine Calendly: https://calendly.com/tarheelcanine Tarheel Canine Seminars: https://streetreadyk9.com/ Tarheel Canine Student Portal: https://tcstudentportal.com/ Sponsors: ALM K9 Equipment: almk9equipment.com PSA & American Schutzhund: psak9-as.org Tarheel Canine: tarheelcanine.com The Drive Company: thedriveco.com The Drive Company Instagram: instagram.com/thedrive.co Dog Armour: dogarmour.com Dog Armour Instagram: instagram.com/dogarmourpro Rogue Arsenal: roguearsenal.com Rogue Arsenal Instagram: instagram.com/rogue_arsenal_official Train hard, train smart, be safe. A Garden Chat with Don TitmusGreg Peterson and Don Titmus reconnect for a November Garden Chat focused on reviewing the ethics and principles of permaculture and how they apply beyond gardening into daily life. Drawing from decades of hands-on experience in arid and temperate climates, they explore observation, working with nature, stacking functions, and regenerative design. The conversation weaves together philosophy, practical examples from Phoenix and North Carolina, and reflections on how a Permaculture Design Course (PDC) can fundamentally reshape how people think and live. Our Guest: Don Titmus grew up in London and at age 16 spent 4 years being trained in horticulture through an apprenticeship and a college course. From there he continued landscaping in his hometown until he moved to Arizona in 1981, where he worked in landscaping and then starting his own business in garden maintenance. In 2003 he attended a Permaculture Design Course, which was life-changing for Don. He knew right away that this was the path he'd been waiting for, and later attended two Permaculture Teacher Trainings.Key Topics & EntitiesPermaculture ethicsPermaculture principlesObservation and designWorking with natureElements and stacking functionsZones (including Zone 0 / self-care)Regenerative and edible landscapesDrylands permacultureRainwater harvestingPerennial systemsPermaculture Design Course (PDC)Bill MollisonDavid HolmgrenUrban Farm PodcastBee Oasis (Mesa, AZ)Key Questions AnsweredWhat is permaculture, in simple terms?Permaculture is the art and science of working with nature—observing natural systems and designing human habitats that align with ecological patterns rather than fighting them. What are the core ethics of permaculture?Care for the earth, care for people, and care for the future (often expressed as sharing surplus). These ethics guide every design decision and ensure long-term sustainability and reciprocity. Why is observation considered the foundation of permaculture design?Spending time observing land, climate, wildlife, and human patterns prevents costly mistakes and reveals opportunities to work with existing energy flows rather than against them. What does it mean that “the problem is the solution”?Challenges—such as excess heat, water runoff, or waste—often contain the seeds of their own solutions when reframed through thoughtful design. How do elements and stacking functions create resilience? Each element in a system (trees, chickens, compost, water systems) should serve multiple functions, increasing efficiency, reducing waste, and strengthening connections across the whole system. What is a Permaculture Design Course (PDC), and who is it for?A PDC is a globally recognized 72-hour introduction to permaculture principles and design, tailored to local bioregions and intended to transform how participants think about land, community, and life systems. Why take a PDC in your own bioregion and in person?Local courses address climate-specific realities, and in-person learning builds community, shared experience, and deeper understanding through hands-on practice. How can permaculture principles apply beyond gardening?Permaculture offers a framework for life—informing health, relationships, work, energy use, and even practices like yoga—by emphasizing connection, care, and intentional design.Episode HighlightsPermaculture as a life framework, not just a gardening...
