I wanted to give a lot of my platform today to voices from the Atlanta "No Kings Day" event, from local grassroots activists like Dom Kelly of the New Disabled South to Rev. Senator Raphael Warnock and Stacey Abrams. There was also appearances from former state senator Jason Esteves and Atlanta City Council Presidential candidate Rohit Mahlotra.------There's also this: the Atlanta Journal Constitution profiled Ashley Merchant, the attorney central in the exposing of the Fani Willis / Nathan Wade coupling that formed the basis for Trump co-conspirators' 'conflict of interest' claims (not that a conflict even existed ...). There's just something gross about the legal profession when this is something journalism would laud. Not sorry to say so. ------MAGAs and their unintended consequences ... an Augusta conservative talk radio host posted a close-up, zoomed in photo of someone wearing blue gym shorts. Clearly we were looking at someone's genital "bulge," but have no idea whose, but in the post, host Austin Rhodes wrote "There have been more scholarship players with ding-dongs on the Augusta University Women's Volleyball Team, than there have been KINGS in the U.S. government."Never mind the pivot from "No Kings Day" and its historic precedent; no, as right wing pundits are wont to do, Austin felt the need to play "hey, look over here! Back to banging on trans people!" game with his audience. The problem is, he didn't make it clear the alleged trans athlete no longer plays at the local university, but only after his followers openly stated they'd be uh "scrutinizing" the current roster. That poor girl, named "Hunter," with her ample shoulders and thighs. Oops. ------My guest today: Amir Badat, Fair Fight's senior policy advisor and southern states director, to weigh in on the looming evisceration of Section of the Voting Rights' Act by the U.S. Supreme Court. Also, his Fair Fight co-hort Max Flugrath, shared on social media a 2019 New Yorker piece that brought attention to the "master of modern Republican gerrymandering." A timely look back as the intent of the VRA is set to be done away with by a Trump-packed Supreme Court.

What can the high-stakes world of professional sports teach us about leadership in the corporate world? In this episode, we are joined by Michael Andrei, former German National Volleyball Player and Team Captain of the SWD Powervolleys Düren. Michael now serves as the team's Athletic Coach and works with individuals and organizations as a Personal Trainer and Motivational Coach.Together, we explore the striking parallels between leading on the court and leading in the boardroom. Drawing from his career in top-tier volleyball—including competing in front of 13,000 fans at the European Championships—Michael shares practical insights on pressure, presence, and performance.Key themes in this conversation include:Leading under pressure: What corporate leaders can learn from staying focused in high-stress, high-visibility environments. The importance of body language and emotional control—and how captains and executives alike set the emotional tone for their teams. Why "not taking yourself too seriously" can actually be a sign of strength.Building high-performance cultures: lessons from recruiting and retaining the right team players. How feedback, even when direct and uncomfortable, builds trust and improves performance—if delivered in the right way.Mistake management: distinguishing between "acceptable" and "unacceptable”"errors to enable smart risk-taking.Rethinking success: Why winning isn't everything, and how true leadership shows up not just in victory—but in how we respond to setbacks.Michael also shares strategies and tools from professional sports that are relevant in the corporate context: managing your energy, maintaining emotional composure, and developing resilience through rituals like breathing techniques and staying focused on what truly matters.Whether you're a CEO, senior leader, or team manager, this conversation offers both inspiration and practical strategies for leading with clarity, composure, and heart.Reflection Questions for Leaders:What does "winning" mean to you?Are you projecting the energy you want others to experience? And are there moments where you could take yourself just a little less seriously? To find out more about Michael Andrei and to connect with him, go to his LinkedIn-Profile.About Second CrackMore information about us and our work is available on our website: secondcrackleadership.com. Today's guest is Rett Larson, strength coach for the German Women's Volleyball Team and creator of the "No Zombies" training philosophy. Rett coached Olympic medalists with China and the Netherlands, blending energy, rhythm, and purposeful movement into world-class performance. As sport expands into an increasingly more high-pressure, early specialization event that can easily suck fun and joy away, there grows a need for a "counter-culture" within athletic performance. Not only does a "physical preparation" process for athletes that is joyful and gamified lead to more fun within a training session, but it also develops important athletic qualities, within that umbrella of "fun" that may not be possible in more "traditional" sessions. Rett Larson is spearheading an active, engaging approach to the physical preparation process for athletes with warmups designed for joy, engagement, and a comprehensive stimulation of athletic qualities along the way. On today's episode, Rett speaks on a variety of engaging tools and gamifications in the warmup process for both thermogenic and neurological preparation. He goes into his take on partner exercises and isometrics, and the process of using a physical challenge to "sneak" strength and skill elements in the program. Today's episode is brought to you by Hammer Strength and LILA Wearable Resistance Gear. Use the code "justfly25" for 25% off any Lila Exogen wearable resistance training, including the popular Exogen Calf Sleeves. Rett challenges that default. Why not flip the script? Start with something that actually taps into the nervous excitement athletes bring into day one. Instead of draining that spark, use it to build buy-in. What to try: • Kick things off with a creative team challenge instead of movement screens. • Replace punishments with something silly but memorable (e.g., team serenade or worm dance). • Avoid singling people out—no solo singing for introverts. The goal is laughter, not dread. 2️⃣ Rope Flow: Movement Puzzles that Stick If you've ever tried rope flow, you know it's strangely addicting. Rett uses it as a warm-up tool that hits thermogenic, rotational, and coordination qualities all in one. It's essentially a moving puzzle—and that makes it ideal for getting athletes out of zombie mode. What to try: • Add rope flow sequences early in warm-ups to raise body temp and spark engagement. • Mix in new patterns over time so it stays fresh. • Think of it as "motor learning meets party trick"—athletes love that feeling of leveling up. 3️⃣ Partner Work and Social Pressure: The Good Kind Warm-ups don't have to be solo grinds. In fact, the social element is part of the magic. Whether it's balloon volleys in a split squat or partner wall sits, Rett uses simple tools to inject teamwork, laughter, and just the right amount of peer pressure. What to try: • Design partner or trio-based warm-up drills to naturally boost effort and engagement. • Add tasks or games that distract from the burn (like volleying a balloon while holding a lunge).

Today's guest, NYU Coach Andrew Brown, is the head coach of the highly successful (29-7 record and advanced to the NCAA DIII Tournament Final Four 2022 season) New York University's Women's Volleyball Team. Coach Brown sits down with Kirsten to talk about how his program has changed from the jungle tiger - practicing ugly mentality to playing from the top and being the hunted vs the hunter. He speaks to how you show up after success, when opponents are so motivated to take you down. Kirsten and Andrew talk about how to onboard 5-7 new players, and not overload them in the pre-season. And, he talks about how they bring in consultants to give data and science (think Meyers-Briggs) to give another tool in his athletes toolbox for not just volleyball, but life in general. A fascinating discussion on mindset, grit, expectations, culture and really finding out who your team is! NYU Violets repeated as UAA conference champs in 2023 and are currently playing in the NCAA DIII tournament. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/kirsten-jones0/support

Happy Fall! It's a new season but the same ol' song: Women are still fighting unequal systems within and outside of sports. So on today's episode of The GIST of It, co-hosts Ellen Hyslop and Steph Rotz first chat about the Afghan women's national volleyball team, who compete in defiance of the country's Taliban rule and are currently speaking out about dismal training conditions at the Asian Games. Then after the break, the gals give flowers to a women's soccer and activist GOAT: the USWNT's Megan Rapinoe, who hung up her international boots over the weekend, leaving both a massive hole in the team and an even bigger off-pitch legacy. And while no one can truly fill her cleats, El and Steph kick around a few thoughts about the future of the USWNT. LFG.
