Gary discusses recent discussions he's had with people regarding eschatology and creedal authority. It seems that every theological topic of debate can be settled with Bible verses, except eschatology and especially ones about the "Three Questions." The arguments that most of Gary's critics make are circular and based on certain assumptions that aren't actually biblical.

In debates and discussions about the Trinity and the identity of God, the fallacy of special pleading (or "moving the goalposts") often occurs. This fallacy takes place when one person changes the conditions or definition of their original argument when a counter-argument has met the original conditions, resulting in the original claim being moved farther away in order to avoid admitting the strength of the counter-argument. This week's episode offers several examples of the case of special pleading in debates about God and Christ, shows why they are unhelpful in having charitable conversations, and offers tips on avoiding this common logical fallacy. Real life: I almost named this episode "Because Reasons," but decided not to since I figured that while it would be very entertaining for me, it would not be so great for search engines. It's true. Anyway. Today we're doing an overview of the Special Pleading Fallacy. In a nutshell, it is the exemption of a person or premise from a generally accepted rule, without justification for the exemption. In other words: an exception to the rule...because reasons. (Get it now?? heheh.) We're going over a more in-depth definition, several very relevant examples of this fallacy in the real world, and lastly, some good questions to ask in response to a Special Pleading fallacy. Have a blessed and restful Thanksgiving, you wonderful people! Show notes: http://theartofdeceit.com/episode-19-special-pleading-fallacy/

This is when instead of admitting your point of view or argument is wrong, you try and find a loop-hole that gives you an ‘out’ and saves you from defeat. It is also when a person makes an exception to a universal principle because they are holding on tight to a belief that doesn’t align with that principle. A Logical Fallacy is an error we can make in reasoning, but it usually crops up when we are discussing or arguing our point of view. 0:36:53 Past Bent Spoon winners vie for the dishonour in 2020 In the 38 years of the Australian Skeptics’ Bent Spoon Award, issued to the perpetrator of the most preposterous piece of paranormal or pseudoscientific piffle, we have never had the need to award this dishonour to the same person twice. Today’s Talk Heathen is going to be awesome! Eric Murphy is joined by Kevin Stein in taking calls. Let’s get to calls. Hermer calls us (again!) from a cavern deep inside the Earth, he hasn’t fixed his phone or it could be a voice changer, hmmm. He proceeds to justify Lot’s wife turning into salt because sweat tastes like salt (again, sigh.) Eric asks if he has ever seen anyone turn to salt or watched someone fly. He resorts to talking like a “demon”. Oh, you’re a poe. BYE!Arthur from Fort Worth, Texas calls in to talk about some personal experiences he thinks were supernatural. Kevin gets straight to the point: How do you confirm and verify these experiences? The following caller named Kyran from Florida would like to talk about JW and a hypothetical about their beliefs in the devil. Was it moral that Lucifer was cast out of heaven by God? Interesting hypothetical question, not sure why he’s asking atheists, but it’s an interesting story.Oh, you’ll love this… The next caller in the queue is Tyler B. Tyler from Mississippi who was riling up the live-chat during the show. We kept a line open for him specifically. He is wanting to discuss abiogenesis and how there is no evidence for it and there is only a living god that created everything. Pot, Kettle, God of the Gaps and Special Pleading fallacies, what?Next up, Hayden in Delaware was a former “Atheist” turned Theist. Claims as an atheist he was (like all atheists) close-minded so he became a theist again. Hmmm, interesting. Coming in like a wrecking-ball, we have Ethan up next. He’s in Illinois. Sorry, there’s no correlation there. Chicago is cold this time of year. Anyway, Ethan is wondering how to approach his next debate about making goals within a debate. Good Luck Ethan! Hope your debate on tuesday goes well!Tam in Vietnam has the definite source of morality. It’s.... the behavior of a species that encourages reproduction and the balance of those being born and those dying. I am not sure how human survival is moral, have you seen what we are doing to our home planet? Our last caller of the day, Daniel in California wants to talk about which book is more honest, the Book of Eric or the Bible. (We all agree, the Book of Eric is more honest.) Being pushed to a point, he asks about the “God Particle.” Google is a wonderful place, Daniel. I think you’ll find a wealth of information there. And that’s it folks, see you all next week!

Sometimes you apply a double standard to the things you love, the things you believe, and the things crucial to your identity, and often you do so without realizing it. Special pleading is all about searching for exemptions and excuses for why a standard, or a rule, or a description, or a definition does not apply to something that you hold dear. It's also used to explain away how something extraordinary fails to stand up to scrutiny, or why there is a lack of evidence for a difficult-to-believe claim.
