Kathryn and coach Julie help you reframe how you think about recovery. You'll learn to challenge the belief that stopping binge eating is a hard road and see that ending this destructive habit is actually the easy path. Ease never comes from giving in to urges to binge, or trying to control weight through restriction, but from nourishing your body, accepting your natural weight, and letting go of the binge-restrict cycle. Even if there are some challenging and uncomfortable moments in recovery, it's never as hard as bingeing. A binge-free life is created by dismissing one binge urge at a time, and by eating adequately one meal/snack at a time. This requires consistency. Although the decision to stop bingeing can be instantaneous, healing of the body and brain from this habit takes time. Kathryn and Coach Julie teach you how to make positive change in pivotal moments or “inflection points” in recovery. You'll learn that you don't have to fix every part of your life or every part of your eating. Instead, you can zero in on the times when you are tipping into the problematic behaviors, make some adjustments, and harness your own power of choice. When you recognize and work on your own inflection points, you can avoid going down those familiar but harmful pathways and build new habits. Having a difficult relationship with food affects nearly every other relationship in your life, including your relationship with yourself. Because eating disorders are so isolating, you may find yourself turning away from other people—even the people you love the most and who love you the most. Your drive to binge and your obsessive food thoughts can distract you from being present in relationships or prevent you from forming relationships. Kathryn addresses these issues and more in this episode about healing your relationship with food, yourself, and others. Recovery can bring up some unexpected feelings, including grief. Even though binge eating is ultimately a harmful behavior, you may still experience a sense of loss as you let it go, and you may also grieve the time you lost to the eating disorder. As you go through this, it can be helpful to cultivate thoughts and feelings of gratitude to soften the grief, and to keep you moving in the direction of freedom from the struggle with food. Life inevitably involves loss, and some lessons learned from recovery about both grief and gratitude can help you in many other areas as you move forward. I never would have believed that this was possible when I was bulimic, because cereal seemed to control me. Through my story, I want to help you learn to develop a healthy relationship with former binge foods.
