Pete Troupos SSC and staff coach for Starting Strength joins Byron during his UK visit of Summer 2021.Pete flew in from Florida to hold two camps with SSC Carl Raghavan in London, both sold out.In this interview Pete explains the Starting Strength method and why it has such a meaningful impact when applied by lifters young and old.He discusses the fitness/gym industry in general and goes on to explain key differences in the approach that Starting Strength takes to provide transformative changes through basic barbell training delivered by Starting Strength Coaches. We discuss the allure of physique based training in motivating people to begin exercise, what people can expect when they begin strength training and why women should not be worried about negative effects of barbell and strength training when it comes to their appearance.Pete also talks about the focus on progressing within strength training, why it is a worthy undertaking when there are many other forms of exercise available and how it proves its relevance within day to day living, especially as we age.Pete goes on to talk about why there are only around 120 Starting Strength Coaches in the world, and he details the rigorous process for going beyond the industry standard of Personal Trainer to become a coach and how Starting Strength Coaches are assessed. #112 - Nick D'Agostino: A Skeptic's Approach to Strength Training and Physical Therapy

Barbell Logic

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 1, 2018 48:21

Perhaps the most genetically gifted (and certainly one of the strongest) Starting Strength Coaches joins us today, Mr. Nick D'Agostino. Nick has been an SSC since 2012, and will soon call himself a Physical Therapist as well. Unlike many of the coaches we have interviewed who began with the Starting Strength method and the novice linear progression, Nick was already a decently strong lifter before he discovered Starting Strength while listening to a lecture by another PT and SSC, Dr. John Petrizzo (who we interviewed on Episode 75).   Having read some of the classic strength training texts such as Supertraining by Siff and Verkhoshansky and The Science and Practice of Strength Training by Zatsiorsky, Nick was skeptical at first. But he tried the linear progression on a training client of his and noticed the rapid strength gains, but wasn't convinced that a lifter like himself with some years of experience under the bar already could benefit from the LP. After Rippetoe told him he "had to" do an LP at a seminar, Nick gave it a try and soon found himself squatting his former 1RM for 3x5. Needless to say, he was sold on the Starting Strength approach.   Nevertheless, his natural skepticism has served him well as a coach and PT. Nick offers several insights he has gained over the last several years as a coach, including his concept of "cognitive coaching," which he presented on at the 2018 Starting Strength Coaches Association. Cognitive coaching is the idea that learning is the product of active problem solving, and thus the ultimate goal of a coach should be to get the lifter to learn correct movement patterns - not just execute the correct movement patterns when coached. Nick employs this idea by searching for cues that force the lifter to figure out movement problems on his own, rather than cueing specific errors and the fix for those errors. For instance, he might fix an incorrect squat grip in which the bar is held too much in the hands by telling the lifter to "feel the bar on (his) back." Of course, that can only be accomplished by straightening the wrists and allowing the musculature of the shoulders to hold the bar, but the cue forces the lifter to figure out the details, rather than point out the details in the cue.   You can find Nick coaching in person at Woodmere Fitness Club or online at nick@thebarbelltherapist.com. #103 - Barbell Logic Extra: The Man Behind the Memes: Pete Troupos

Matt and Scott interview the man behind the Starting Strength Instagram (and it's memes), coach Pete Troupos. Pete is a Starting Strength Coach currently based out of Dallas, TX. He is also an SSOC coach as well as the organizer for all Starting Strength lifting camps across the country, so he is well versed in the Starting Strength model and the variety of coaches in the organization.   Prior to becoming a coach, Pete had a long career in retail loss prevention, where he learned to recognize behavioral patterns that indicated theft in stores. He also learned about neuro-linguistics to read facial expressions and other behavioral tip-offs while investigating employee store theft. This training has served him well as a barbell coach, making him better aware of his lifters' struggles and able to recognize and correct negative movement patterns.   In addition to his coaching practice, Pete helps run the Barbell Coaching Academy on Facebook, a resource and community for aspiring Starting Strength Coaches to refine their coaching eye, discuss cues, learn about programming, and work on the myriad of other skills a good strength coach will need.   You can find Pete as a coach and team leader on Starting Strength Online Coaching, or on Instagram @troup_a_loop.   Of course, if you don't already you need to follow the official Starting Strength instagram @startingstrength.   Connect With Matt Matt on Instagram Starting Strength Online Coaching — Matt’s website Matt on Facebook Matt on Twitter Connect With Scott Scott on Instagram Silver Strength – Scott’s website Scott on Facebook Scott on Twitter Connect With the Show Barbell Logic on Twitter Barbell Logic on Instagram The Website Barbell Logic on Facebook barbelllogicpodcast@gmail.com

Gillian Ward is definitely the best athlete we've had on the show, and likely the best athlete we'll EVER have on the show. Her athletic accomplishments are as varied as they are extraordinary: she holds the Guiness World Record for most pushups in 1 hour with 1,190 pushups, she placed 3rd at the Crossfit Games in 2008 (after only doing Crossfit for a little over three months), she has her IFBB pro card, and has competed at a high level in gymnastics, strongman, powerlifting, and Olympic lifting.   Gillian is clearly an elite athlete with elite genetics, but she also has an incredible amount of body control, muscular endurance, and mental fortitude developed over her long career and the sheer breadth of her experience as a strength athlete. She has kept meticulous training logs (since 5th grade!) and, as a result, has become an excellent coach as well. Gillian is an advocate for building strength in women, and trains women of all levels at her gym.   Gillian trains clients with her husband Mac Ward (both Starting Strength Coaches) at their gym Crystal Coast Strength & Conditioning.   A few of Gillian's personal bests: 2:50 Fran time 400lbs Squat 281lbs Bench 485lbs Deadlift 185lbs Press (for a double)   Connect with Gillian IG: @gillianwardathlete Crystal Coast Strength & Conditioning Crossfit Emerald Isle   Head on over to Online Great Books to hear Scott's conversation with Jordan Peterson on the Great Books of Western Civilization.

#96 - The Starting Strength Seminar: A Review

Barbell Logic

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 31, 2018 58:43

Matt and Scott discuss the content and format of the Starting Strength seminar, an intensive weekend full of lecture, technical analysis of the lifts, and practical coaching on the platform. The seminar is the culmination of the content presented in SSBBT and Practical Programming, combined with the platform segments where attendees get lots of reps under the eyes of a Starting Strength staff coach while themselves teaching others how to lift. Rip's philosophy is that teaching helps you learn best, so every lifter is required to teach another lifter how to perform the lifts. This is one of the things that makes the Starting Strength seminar unique in the fitness industry.    Of course those seeking to become certified Starting Strength Coaches must attend a seminar AND pass the platform test there. Those that opt-in to be evaluated as a coach will be watched closely by a staff coach to determine if they have the coaching experience, knowledge of the model, and platform presence to teach all of the core lifts at a high level. The platform test is the first step toward becoming an SSC (but not the only step, there is a written exam to pass after the platform is passed), and the pass rate is very low -- 10% or less -- because of the high coaching standards in place. As Scott says, attendees pay a high price to be at the seminar, and they need to get their value. If a prospective coach is not performing at the level of the staff coach presiding over the platform, then the platform coach will step in and ensure the lifter is getting the coaching he deserves.   At the end of the day, we recommend that every serious lifter attend a Starting Strength seminar, as there is so much to learn by taking a deep dive into the model over an intense weekend. While all the information is contained elsewhere in the books and articles on the SS website, the seminar presents an opportunity to engage with it in a focused manner, and interact with the staff coaches and Rip himself. Likewise, the platform portions offer the chance to get in-depth coaching on all your lifts, as well as the opportunity to observe different staff coaches work the platform.   That said, get some training under your belt first. If you haven't worked with a SSC, go do that, get your form down, and train for a while. Then come over to the seminar. It's a big weekend with a TON of information that may be hard to swallow if you are totally new to the Starting Strength method.

#14 - Life Finds A Way... to Deload You

It's a fact of life - training isn't always going to go how you like. Whether it's an arduous work schedule, travel, sickness, or any other reason, you will miss training sessions from time to time. If you are training rather than exercising, however, there's a model for regaining the lost ground during that time period. It's called a deload, and it's a useful tool in our training arsenal.   As the name suggests, a deload is simply a term we use to describe a reduction in load, or intensity, of the workouts in a training cycle. Even though we call it a de-"load," it can also apply to volume.   When you miss training, there's no stress being applied to stimulate physical adaptation per the Stress-Recovery-Adaptation cycle, thus detraining occurs. How much detraining depends on the length of the layoff, the reason for it (i.e. sickness will detrain you more than a vacation, especially if you lose weight), and how advanced the trainee is. Generally speaking, more advanced trainees will detrain less than more novice trainees. Age plays a big role too; as many Starting Strength Coaches have observed, older trainees tend to deload quickly without intensity in their training.   So, deloads are both a necessary and inevitable part of training. It's not a negative thing either! Deloading can be a good time to iron out technique issues that have crept up, or dissipate accumulated fatigue from the end of a strenuous training cycle.

#73 - Enduring Gravity with Steve Hill

Matt and Scott sat down with Starting Strength Coach Steve Hill during StrengthCon to discuss barbells, physics, cycling, and strength training for endurance athletes. One of the things that makes Starting Strength unique is its application of physics to the barbell lifts. Starting Strength follows a moment model for the lifts, analyzing the force of gravity on the barbell and intelligently applying moment force on the largest muscle groups of the body to move the bar against gravity in the most efficient path (vertically). Steve helped us parse through some of the more confusing applications of physics in barbell training, and talked about his own career as an athlete, a lifter and now a coach.   Steve has an athletic background as a national champion track cyclist and a short distance time trialist. He is now a commercial airline pilot and Starting Strength's resident physics guru. He specializes in training cyclists, starting with the standard novice linear progression during the off-season and gradually working sport-specific training back in as the next season approaches. The LP portion may only last for 4-6 weeks, however, as Steve prefers not to keep athletes away from their endurance training too long. This foreshortened approach to LP produces some strength gains while minimizing loss of aerobic capacity.   Steve Hill does not have a website but you can find him via the Starting Strength Coaches directory. He is located in the Atlanta area.
