Even though it's 2025. the 2024 batches of Stagg (Jr) are still just now hitting certain markets. It's hard to believe that there are four batches of Stagg now! How the times have changed. Uncut and unfiltered, Stagg is a classic bourbon that is approximately a decade old, carries a high proof, and represents the one of the pioneers of what we now know as modern day Buffalo Trace. This whiskey needs no introduction. We've reviewed it before, but Stagg newbies and enthusiasts alike know that there is a lot of variation between batches. Thanks to a wonderful listener (Brian) who sent us samples of both batches, we are able to give you our honest and candid assessment. Some have said that Stagg 24D is one of the best batches in recent years. What do we think? You'll have to listen to find out. We also talk about a bad grilling experience that Anthony had recently as well as some local bourbon drama. We forgot to do a "pass, try, or buy," but Stagg is always a buy if you can get it for retail price. --------------------------SocialsIG: https://www.instagram.com/themashupkyFB: https://www.facebook.com/themashupkyYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@themashupkyPartnership(s)Visit Bourbonoutfitter.com and enter code THEMASHUP for a special discount or visit bourbonoutfitter.com/THEMASHUPVisit https://woodworkcollective.shop and enter code MASHUP for a 15% discount on your orderMusic: All the Fixings by Zachariah HickmanThank you so much for listening!

This episode brings Super Nash back to explore what makes Stagg special and how it's evolved since dropping the "Junior" designation in 2021.The boys taste multiple batches side-by-side, comparing the last Stagg Jr. (Batch 12 at 130.9 proof) with recent 2024 releases. What emerges is a fascinating portrait of consistency - the signature brown sugar and cherry notes remain intact across batches, proving Buffalo Trace's commitment to maintaining quality while increasing availability. The team discusses how Stagg has become more accessible in Ohio and beyond, with multiple 2024 batches (A through D) hitting shelves this year.Perhaps most intriguing is the comparison between standard Stagg and George T. Stagg from the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection. Many bourbon enthusiasts actually prefer the regular Stagg despite the significant price difference, describing it as "the working man's bourbon" versus "the rich man's special bottle." At $59.99 MSRP, Stagg represents extraordinary value compared to secondary market prices of $200-400.Beyond the tasting, the episode captures the camaraderie that makes bourbon special - sharing bottles, standing in line at releases, and planning adventures like the upcoming Kentucky Bourbon Festival tour. As bourbon availability increases across Buffalo Trace products, the community benefits from greater access to exceptional whiskeys like Stagg.Have you tried different Stagg batches? Tasting Notes: The lowest proof of any Stagg Jr, (now just Stagg) ever released, batch 23C is filled with wild berry aromas, including grape, blackberry, and darker florals. On the palate, initial oak explodes into fruit and spice. Honey, caramel, and nougat along with the continued line of dark fruit fight it out harmoniously with the baking spices. Some fresh apple skins and apple pie cinnamon sugar to finish as well. Big, juicy, worth of the Stagg tag, but actually drinkable at full strength!

Stagg Jr. Batch 17 128.7 "The Last Batch" Before they took the "Jr" off the label, they released this 17th batch of Stagg Jr. at 128.7 proof, unfiltered. This WILL go down as a historic bottling. Rich berry and vanilla aromas, almost cassis, blackberry liqueur-like with a touch of cinnamon spice. On the palate, very richly spiced with more dark fruit on the finish. Fantastic depth and mouth-feel for the proof.
Iggy, Michael, and Ken compare two batches of Stagg Jr. How similar or different will batch 12 and batch 16 be? Music by Adam Whitehead - https://www.facebook.com/adamwhiteheadmusic Email us at - thewhiskeyfriends@gmail.com #bourbon #10 High #whiskey #proof #sweetness #vanilla #palate #budget-friendly 10 High Bourbon Whiskey Review Introduction: In this whiskey review, we'll be diving into the world of 10 High Bourbon, a spirit that seems to have sparked some interesting discussions among whiskey enthusiasts. Appearance: While the podcast didn't delve into the visual aspects of 10 High Bourbon, online information indicates that it's a standard amber hue, common for many bourbons. The exact shade may vary slightly depending on the bottling. Aroma: During the conversation, the hosts described the nose of 10 High as having a sweet fragrance. Although not explored in detail, it's likely that the whiskey offers hints of sweetness on the nose, perhaps with some subtle vanilla notes. This mild aroma sets the stage for what's to come. Taste: One host commented on the thinness of the palate, suggesting that 10 High might not be the most complex bourbon. However, they also noted the presence of nice fruit flavors, a touch of bitterness, and even a hint of vanilla pudding. These flavors were mentioned in a relatively positive light, especially given the price point. Age Statement: The absence of a visible age statement on the bottle led the hosts to speculate that it must be at least four years old by law. This information is consistent with bourbon regulations, which require that bourbon be aged for a minimum of four years in new charred oak barrels. Price and Availability: The conversation hinted that 10 High Bourbon falls within the affordable range, estimated to be around $10 to $15. They also mentioned that it's widely distributed, making it accessible to a broad audience. Conclusion: In summary, 10 High Bourbon seems to be a budget-friendly option that doesn't compromise entirely on flavor. While it may not be the most complex or refined bourbon available, it offers a straightforward and enjoyable drinking experience, especially for those who appreciate a touch of sweetness and fruitiness. Its affordability and wide availability make it a suitable choice for casual sipping or as a mixer for cocktails. If you're on a tight budget and looking for a serviceable bourbon, 10 High might be worth a try.
Iggy, Michael, and Ken compare two batches of Stagg Jr. How similar or different will batch 12 and batch 16 be? Music by Adam Whitehead - https://www.facebook.com/adamwhiteheadmusic Email us at - thewhiskeyfriends@gmail.com #whiskey #Stagg Jr. #batch #bourbon #proof #cherry #flavor #nose #palate #oak Stagg Jr. Shootout Review 1: Stagg Jr. Batch 12 Stagg Jr. Batch 12 is a true gem among bourbons. At a whopping 132.3 proof, it promises a bold experience, yet it surprises with its approachability. The nose immediately captures your attention with its sweet and inviting aroma, reminiscent of molasses, brown sugar, and nutmeg. Cherry and honey notes add complexity as the nose opens up. On the palate, Stagg Jr. Batch 12 continues to impress. Despite its high proof, it doesn't overwhelm with alcohol burn. Instead, it offers a rich and harmonious blend of flavors. Notes of vanilla, caramel, chocolate, brown sugar, and molasses come together like a symphony, with cherry making a delightful appearance. The mouthfeel is full-bodied, and the finish is remarkably smooth, with seasoned oak and vanilla lingering. This bourbon's unique character lies in its ability to balance high proof with flavorful depth. Stagg Jr. Batch 12 is a must-try for any bourbon enthusiast, offering a complex and well-rounded tasting experience. Review 2: Stagg Jr. Batch 16 Stagg Jr. Batch 16 is another impressive release from the Stagg Jr. series. At 131 proof, you'd expect a fiery kick, but this bourbon showcases surprising smoothness. The nose presents a sweet profile with hints of molasses, cinnamon, cardamom, and brown butter. While cherry is elusive, baked apple notes take the spotlight, accompanied by chocolate and subtle vanilla undertones. The palate experience is a bit different from the nose, with an oakier presence and a toned-down sweetness. Baked apple remains prominent, complemented by brown sugar and a touch of spice, reminiscent of peppermint and allspice. The mouthfeel is delightful, with a slight suggestion of tobacco, suggesting extra aging. Stagg Jr. Batch 16 is a unique departure from its predecessors, offering a richer, oakier experience. While cherry takes a backseat, the emergence of baked apple and a complex spice profile makes this release stand out. It's a fantastic addition to the Stagg Jr. series, earning a solid eight and a half out of ten for its distinctive character and balanced sweetness.

Welcome back y'all. The time is finally here. The full proof bracket is here and we have a lot of heavy hitters on it. As we have not reviewed them all, we randomly selected the first round competitors. This bracket was a heavy hitter with the 2nd highest proof bourbon, Stagg Jr, coming in at 131.1 proof. Stagg Jr a huge fan favorite in the bourbon community, but extremely hard to find is a tasty bourbon, but Larceny Barrel Proof is a strong competitor. With National Beer Day looming in the not too distant future, we decided we needed to take a break from having beers on our Thursday Night show on Twitch.tv. For our show on the last day of March, we opened with a couple of hard Kombuchas, which were tasty and then moved on to bourbon. Some bourbons have become increasingly difficult to find in the past few years and often when they are found it is on the secondary market which means they are going to be expensive. One of those that is hard to find is the Stagg Jr. from Buffalo Trace, which is barrel proof, unfiltered, and delicious. Andrew was lucky enough to be the recipient of a bottle a couple of years ago as a gift and we tried it for one of our shows a couple years back. When it comes to these harder to source bourbons, often people are looking for easier to find, less expensive substitutes that have a similar flavor profile. It had been suggested to us recently that we should try the Pinhook High Proof Bourbon in comparison to the Stagg Jr. SInce Andrew still had some of the Stagg Jr, we decided to find out for ourselves how they compare and do a blind tasting of the two. The results of that tasting is the episode that we have for you this week. The Stagg Jr. checks in at 132 proof and is anywhere from $80 to $300 if you can find it. The Pinhook is around 120 proof, $50 a bottle and as of this writing relatively easy to find. What did we think? What do you think? Let us know in the comments below or join us live on Thursday nights to give us your feedback while we are live streaming on Twitch. If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@gmail.com.

This week we are trying Stagg Jr. Bourbon. More specifically we are trying the 2017 Batch #9. This is a barrel proof, unfiltered bourbon. Additional show notes can be found at caskmatespodcast.com/stagg-jr-batch-#9. Afterwards we chat about some of the most well known conspiracy theories around. We hit on many of the classics such as the JFK assassination and Area-51. As well as some of the more out there ones such as flat earthers, Paul McCartney is dead and hidden secret societies controlling the world. Thanks for listening and we will see you next week.
