Mark Bell has a saying - "Strength is Never a Weakness and Weakness is Never a Strength."Today on Ep. 06 of The Essential Strength Podcast, Mike and David had the honor of spending over an hour talking to the one and only Mark Bell about how strength plays a roll in his life inside and outside the gym. While most people are familiar with "Smelly" as the owner of Mark Bell's Slingshot and Super Training Gym, the man who has squatted 1,000lbs and continues to workout like a savage - we wanted to know how he uses his strength to be a good father and a good husband. We were fascinated by a man who has been very open about his struggles in school and yet he has become obsessed with learning and providing so much education to his audience. We even find out a little known fact about the first book Mark has ever read.We dive into times where Mark has had to overcome fear and discuss how embracing the hard workouts and "staying in the pocket" prepared him for difficult times in his life. We talk about the incredible culture at Super Training gym and how Mark approaches leadership. It would almost be easier to just list the thing's we DIDN'T talk about, because we talked about A LOT on today's episode. We hope that in the end you all feel inspired to believe in yourselves and your dreams, to lean into you interests and passions, and to create something that will live on long after you are gone. For more Mark Bell, check out the following:Mark Bell's Slingshot - https://markbellslingshot.com/Mark Bell's YouTube Channel - https://www.youtube.com/user/supertraining06Mark Bell's Power Project - https://markbellspowerproject.libsyn.com/ & https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXEj4RFUC44sHoBLvi4G1XAMark Bell on IG - https://www.instagram.com/marksmellybell/This guy is pumping out more quality content than just about anyone in the health and fitness space. I am in West Sacramento, CA with Mark Bell of Super Training Gym. Mark is a powerlifter and entrepreneur who has had his own experiences with addiction. In this episode, Mark shares his early exposure to addiction and talks about how everybody needs something to hold onto while overcoming addiction. Mark shares all kinds of knowledge like how exercise and nutrition can make everything better and the importance of looking into why you have certain behaviors. Mark is a husband, father, gym owner, powerlifter, inventor, podcaster, and inspiring guy. This podcast is packed with knowledge and inspiration that will help anyone start to look at addiction in a different light and make positive changes towards their life. Show Notes [01:34] I am with Mark Bell of the Super Training Gym in West Sacramento, CA. [01:55] Training here has been a huge deal for me. I have been following Mark for 5 or 6 years. I wanted to get into powerlifting. [03:28] When people get clean and sober they want to change everything. I tell them to take it slow. The men always want to get jacked. [04:09] Mark's first experience with addiction. There was a lot in his family and he recognized it at a very young age. [04:56] Every year they dreaded going to Marks Mom's side of the family's house, but then they enjoyed going to his Dad's side of the family's house. [06:35] As a kid, Mark was always slightly uneasy when he went to his mom's family's house. [06:57] A lot of his mom's family struggled with addiction. [11:44] There's always a possibility that your child could end up being addicted to something. [12:48] Addicted people are no longer really in control. [14:22] If you are struggling with drugs and alcohol try to find one thing that you can hold on to like lifting weights or something. [16:21] When people give up drugs and alcohol it's like losing their best friend. [19:38] Sometimes Mark likes to get away from weight lifting and focus on his health. [21:33] A lot of great things happen when you're forced to do something. A strong why will help you figure out how. [25:08] Hold on to something and tell yourself that you have the discipline to do something until it is finished. [28:18] Why would you continue to do something that's harming other people in your life that you care for? [29:47] When you are addicted to something that suffocates you and consumes your life in your time. [36:48] People need to distinguish what being sober means to them. It's your own internal definition of what being sober means. Kratom could be a new addiction, it depends on why people use it. [42:34] Nutrition and exercise can be helpful towards any problem that you have. [44:40] What you put in your mouth is going to directly affect how you feel. [47:14] People in active addiction can't take ownership of anything and everything is someone else's fault. [49:04] Constant movement promotes constant movement. Do more be more. [50:11] Move a muscle change a thought. If you lay around on the couch all day that's exactly what you're going to get. [51:16] A 10-minute walk is a great life lesson because you can do 10 minutes of anything. [52:23] Look into why you're not doing the things that you should be doing. If you just do the things you're supposed to do, even if you don't want to do them, you will be so much further ahead of everyone else. [55:04] Coming clean with pornography addiction is very difficult. Even more difficult than coming clean with alcohol or drug use. [55:34] You have to be careful about what you put in your brain. [57:16]  Mark usually does his personal development stuff from 4 to 6 a.m. This includes drinking some water maybe going outside going for a walk or listening to a podcast. [59:10] He plans his days in advance, so he can get done what he wants to get done. [59:43] He then cooks for his kids, goes to some meetings, gets to work out, and create his podcast. [01:02:04] Mark tries to get people excited about fitness even though it's a long painful process. [01:02:50] Mark can take wisdom that he learned from lifting and apply it to other areas of life. [01:03:35] Gain knowledge on the things you love to do and have those be part of your life. [01:04:36] Everyone possesses the ability to learn, gain more knowledge, and be stronger. Our abilities are endless once we open up our minds. [01:05:20] The more you can learn about yourself the more you can help other people. [01:05:57] If you are struggling right now reach out and ask for help. [01:06:46] If you recognize that someone has an addiction problem, take them out to lunch and see what's going on. Perhaps the most genetically gifted (and certainly one of the strongest) Starting Strength Coaches joins us today, Mr. Nick D'Agostino. Nick has been an SSC since 2012, and will soon call himself a Physical Therapist as well. Unlike many of the coaches we have interviewed who began with the Starting Strength method and the novice linear progression, Nick was already a decently strong lifter before he discovered Starting Strength while listening to a lecture by another PT and SSC, Dr. John Petrizzo (who we interviewed on Episode 75).   Having read some of the classic strength training texts such as Supertraining by Siff and Verkhoshansky and The Science and Practice of Strength Training by Zatsiorsky, Nick was skeptical at first. But he tried the linear progression on a training client of his and noticed the rapid strength gains, but wasn't convinced that a lifter like himself with some years of experience under the bar already could benefit from the LP. After Rippetoe told him he "had to" do an LP at a seminar, Nick gave it a try and soon found himself squatting his former 1RM for 3x5. Needless to say, he was sold on the Starting Strength approach.   Nevertheless, his natural skepticism has served him well as a coach and PT. Nick offers several insights he has gained over the last several years as a coach, including his concept of "cognitive coaching," which he presented on at the 2018 Starting Strength Coaches Association. Cognitive coaching is the idea that learning is the product of active problem solving, and thus the ultimate goal of a coach should be to get the lifter to learn correct movement patterns - not just execute the correct movement patterns when coached. Nick employs this idea by searching for cues that force the lifter to figure out movement problems on his own, rather than cueing specific errors and the fix for those errors. For instance, he might fix an incorrect squat grip in which the bar is held too much in the hands by telling the lifter to "feel the bar on (his) back." Of course, that can only be accomplished by straightening the wrists and allowing the musculature of the shoulders to hold the bar, but the cue forces the lifter to figure out the details, rather than point out the details in the cue.   You can find Nick coaching in person at Woodmere Fitness Club or online at nick@thebarbelltherapist.com. "As soon as you plant a flag, people will start shooting" - Mel Siff, author of Supertraining, told me that nearly 20 years ago. Innovators and entrepreneurs are often forced to deal with the bad habits of their competitors. When owners are scared, they do shady things: they email clients at other businesses and offer them deep discounts. They copy blog posts and videos. They even make fun of other owners online--can you imagine a more transparent cry for help? Original ideas are sometimes ridiculed by jealous competitors. Out of ideas themselves, they throw rocks because it's the only tool they have. And even businesses serving a similar niche can compromise their core values when they're scared of losing money. But take heart: no competition is forever. And if they're copying, criticizing or complaining, it means you're winning. For this episode, I asked members of the Two-Brain family to share their best advice on dealing with local competition. I took the first ten responses, and our producer compiled them into a very entertaining and helpful episode. These are the opinions of their contributors, not necessarily Two-Brain. They're uncut and--in some cases--very raw. But on this topic, like all the others, I believe in radical transparency.

The fun and intensity of the gym can be seen on our website, www.SuperTraining.Tv. I have also established the wildly popular "Power Project Q and A," which now has over 2 million views. You can check that out at www.YouTube.com/SuperTraining06. I am a World and American record holding pro powerlifter. I've squatted 1,080 lbs, benched 854 lbs, and deadlifted 766 lbs. My 2,628 lb total is the highest in California history. I'm currently ranked in the top 10 of all-time at 275 and 308.
