Lidudumalingani first caught our attention with his 2016 Caine Prize winning short story, “Memories we lost”, which discusses mental illness and issues of access in an often forgotten rural context, it was poignant and powerful giving a voice to a population often ignored. Lidudumalingani is a master of many trades as a writer, photographer and filmmaker. After the success of winning the Caine Prize, Lidudumalingani went on to win the Marshall Scholarship for his manuscript of his eagerly anticipated debut. Dr Alma-Nalisha Cele sat down with the prodigious Lidudumalingani to discuss photography, mental health and Black literature. In under hour, The Cheeky Natives held an eye opening and heart warming conversation on the state of literature in South Africa, decolonisation and his hopes for writing. 'We seek a world in which there is room for many worlds'- Sunil Yapa in her beautiful novel "Your heart is a muscle the size of your fist”. An apt quote for the conversation in today's episode.

Sunil Yapa's debut novel, Your Heart is a Muscle the Size of a Fist, returns us to 1999 during the WTO protests in Seattle. Taking on multiple perspectives during the first day of the meeting/protests, Yapa brings us stories that get to the nature of power versus empathy in democracy, in civil society. He said in an interview with Bethanne Patrick, "Empathy is a profound act of imagination and human connection. In fiction, we imagine ourselves into other people’s experiences. Of course, another word for that is 'reading.'" This fascinating book imagines what it means to be empathetic within the institutional violence of our system and the violence humans can commit against each other. Listen to our discussion about power and the necessity of protest within our democratic structure, and how protests should, and can, peacefully engage to solve the world's "wicked problems." This discussion features Raphael Bostic, Matt Gainer, William G. Resh, and Danielle Williams. Email us directly at feedback@overdrive.com Episode Overview In our second author interview, Adam interviews Sunil Yapa, author of Your Heart Is a Muscle the Size of a Fist, which takes place over one day during the 1999 World Trade Organization protests in Seattle. Sunil shares why he chose that moment in history as the setting for his novel and gives some background and history of the protests. He also gives Adam and listeners a glimpse into his writing process and how some of his own life experiences were woven into the fictional characters he has created. Adam also asks him about what can only be described as a writer's worst nightmare: losing a manuscript, which happened to Sunil with the original 600 page draft of the book. But rewriting the novel offered Sunil the opportunity to reexamine his characters and focus on the ones that he was truly invested in. Along with talking about her own book, Sunil shares memories of going to the library as a child and being a voracious readers, including reading Stephen King's IT at 12 or 13 and being terrified, but also loving The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar by Roald Dahl.
