On the afternoon of February 9, 1958, a complaint was called into Long Island's seventh police precinct regarding a series of “strange occurrences” taking place in the caller's home. According to the caller, Lucille Herrmann, for nearly a week the caps and lids of bottles in the basement had been popping off inexplicably, while other bottles and containers were tipping over and spilling their contents for no obvious reason. Elsewhere in the house, items were flying off shelves without the aid of human hands, and toys were breaking without explanation. Not only were the disturbances destructive to the Herrmann's home and property, but they were also psychologically upsetting, since they seemed to be happening on their own.Lucille Herrmann's call to the Seaford Police Department kicked off a two-month-long fascination with what many came to believe was genuine poltergeist activity in the Herrmann's Long Island, NY home. What began as a simple call to the police for assistance quickly escalated into near daily media coverage and interest from a variety of paranormal investigators and skeptics, all determined to identify and explain the cause of the ostensibly supernatural occurrences in what became known as “the house of flying objects.”The Herrmann's case of poltergeist activity is considered by many to be the first modern investigation into poltergeist disturbances and would serve as the inspiration for Stephen Spielberg's 1982 horror film, Poltergeist. Despite the considerable attention, however, the case remains unexplained to this day.Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!ReferencesAllen, Tom. 1958. Busy Bee Stressors: Tracking Bee Hive Data with William G. Meikle

Bees can generate five pounds of honey a day under prime nectar-gathering conditions. Numerous factors make that possible and researchers like William Meikle work on modeling honey bee populations, keeping track of how different stressors might affect honey bee colony health. Listen and learn What measures are important for beehive modeling and why, How bees are able to keep their brood area at a constant warm temperature, and What bee health productivity stressors are being analyzed and why, such as neonicotinoid exposure.  Willliam G. Meikle is a research entomologist with the United States Department of Agriculture. He studies the colony-level behavior of bees through placing sensors on colonies and monitoring them over long periods of time. This can gather evidence for how they might respond to sub lethal pesticides and other stressors. He's therefore constantly measuring things like hive weight, temperature, CO2, and internal humidity. These measures are akin to numbers from a monitor your doctor might have used to check your health. Various measures might indicate your activity, from sleeping to eating to drinking a cup of coffee.  No, bees don't drink coffee, but they do get exposed to neonicotinoids, which are a common type of agriculture insecticide affecting bees. Even at low amounts, he says he can see some sort of impact. Higher levels seem to cause bees to stop foraging, for example. Temperature is another abiotic factor he monitors. Bees have an amazing ability to keep the center area, the brood area, quite warm and constant. Bee social behavior is more than just an inclination. Rather, they work as a superorganism, teaming up and taking turns to use their thoracic muscle movement to warm the center of the hive one by one. A healthy brood is dependent on this constant warmth, and bee population increase can only happen with successful brood rearing. Listen in for more indications of bee colony health. Together, they founded the Henderson Motorcycle Company inDetroit, Michigan. The company quickly gained acclaim for producing powerful, reliable, and well-engineered motorcycles. Henderson's keen engineering acumenwas evident in the inline four-cylinder inline engines that powered theirmotorcycles, setting them apart from the competition. The pinnacle of Henderson's early career came with the introduction of theHenderson Model D, which featured a groundbreaking 1,301 cc engine. Launched in1912, the Model D became an icon of American motorcycle design, admired for itsspeed and innovative features. Henderson Motorcycles established a reputationfor excellence, earning the loyalty of riders who sought performance andquality. Alan Bedell was one of those riders, on June 13, 1917 Bedwell traversed his Henderson from Los Angeles, California, to New York City, roughly 3300 miles in seven days, sixteen hours, and fifteen minutes, breaking the record set by “Cannonball” Baker on an Indian Twin. It was such a proudmoment for the Henderson brothers that beer was free in Detroit that day.Despite their record-breaking and endurance racing success, the industry was notwithout its challenges. In 1917, as the United States entered World War I, thegovernment redirected manufacturing efforts toward the war. HendersonMotorcycles, like many other companies, shifted production to support the wareffort by providing motorcycles for military use.Henderson faced financial difficulties, and in 1917, the Henderson brothers sold theircompany to Ignaz Schwinn, the owner of Excelsior Motor Manufacturing &Supply Company. Despite parting ways with the company he co-founded, William G.Henderson's passion for motorcycles persisted.Determined to make another mark on the industry, Henderson didn't stay on the sidelinesfor long. In 1919, he founded the Ace Motor Corporation in Philadelphia,Pennsylvania. With a renewed commitment to innovation, Henderson set out tocreate motorcycles that would captivate enthusiasts once again.Under Henderson's leadership, Ace Motor Corporation introduced the Ace Four, featuring Henderson's tried and true inline 4-cyl, a powerful 1,047 cc engine wascreated, and carefully designed so as not to infringe on any of Schwinn's patents.Henderson's dedication to engineering excellence and performance shone through, and the Ace Four garnered acclaim for its advanced features, including atriple-speed transmission and a modern fork design.William G. Henderson tragically perished on this day December 11, 1922, after collidingwith a delivery truck while testing a prototype ACE Sporting Solo. Henderson'simpact on the motorcycle industry was profound. His commitment to engineeringexcellence and innovation continues to be celebrated, with the motorcycles heplayed a key role in designing becoming revered classics. How the UN Keeps Peace Among Neighbors, with William G. Nomikos

Today on Scope Conditions, what's the secret to successful peacekeeping? We often think of civil conflict as being driven by organized, armed groups – like rebel militias and state armies. But as our guest today reminds us, a leading cause of conflict around the world is communal violence – fights that break out between civilians over land, cattle, water, and other scarce resources.  When the United Nations sends peacekeepers in to manage a conflict, one of their most important jobs is defusing tensions among neighbors – preventing local disputes from spiraling into widespread violence and derailing a larger peace process. Dr. William Nomikos is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at UC Santa Barbara. In his forthcoming book, Local Peace, International Builders: How the UN Builds Peace from the Bottom Up, Will asks why peacekeepers sometimes manage, but other times fail, to keep a lid on communal violence. As he explains to us, the key to successful peacekeeping is being perceived by local populations as an impartial mediator among contending groups. But the thing is, a reputation for impartiality isn't something that a peacekeeping force can manufacture overnight. Whether or not peacekeepers are seen as unbiased in a communal dispute is often shaped by experiences that long predate the contemporary conflict, such as the legacies of colonialism. It turns out that deployments by former colonizers – like French peacekeepers sent to Mali – have a pretty hard time tamping down local conflicts. Will walks us through the micro-level logic of his theory of impartial peacekeeping, grounded in the psychology of group conflict. We then discuss his multi-pronged empirical strategy for testing the theory – using a novel, highly granular dataset on peacekeeping deployments; in-depth interviews with communal leaders; and lab-in-the-field experiments in Mali. And we talk about the policy implications of his findings: is the UN uniquely capable of generating perceptions of fairness and managing communal violence, or can NGOs or regional bodies also get the job done? How do revelations of abusive and exploitative behavior by some UN peacekeepers complicate the impartiality picture? And if the presence of neutral arbiters is crucial for keeping a lid on violence, then what's the peacekeeper's exit strategy?Works cited in this episode: Baldwin, Kate. Welcome to Day 1842 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom A Safe Ship – Daily Wisdom Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps.  We are on Day 1842 of our Trek, and it's time to explore another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today's trek.  Wisdom is the final frontier in gaining true knowledge.  So we are on a daily trek to create a legacy of wisdom, seek out discernment and insights, and boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend; this is Gramps.  Thanks for coming along on today's trek as we increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy.  https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2016%3A16&version=NLT (Proverbs 16:16)  How much better to get wisdom than gold, and sound judgment than silver!    If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life.  So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from William G.T. Shedd, and it is: A ship is always safest in the harbor.  But that's not what ships are built for. A Safe Ship A ship that never leaves the harbor will never fulfill what it was destined for.  Even in harbor, it could still be ripped to pieces by a hurricane.  Yes, the ship may be safest in harbor, but what good does it do if it is not used for its intended purpose.   The same is true of our lives.  At times we feel like climbing into our bubble to be safe from the storms of life, but that is not why we are created.  We are created as imagers of our all-knowing, all-powerful, all-wise God, and He has a specific destiny for our lives.   Regardless of what you do for employment to meet the physical needs of your family, that is not as important as what our true occupation is.  We are destined to be citizens of God's kingdom and help build His kingdom on earth, as it is in heaven.  What we do for employment enables us to facilitate our occupation.  Everything that we do should be done for God's glory as part of our mission of building His kingdom.  So let us not grow wearing with life, or attempt to hide in a bubble, so we don't have to face our responsibilities.  Let us proceed bolding, knowing that what God has called us to do, he also equips us to do it.  So face the raging waves of life when they come.  God controls the waging waves just as He controls the peaceful ocean. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Isaiah+40%3A28-31&version=NLT (Isaiah 40:28-31) Have you never heard? Have you never understood? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of all the earth. He never grows weak or weary. No one can measure the depths of his understanding. He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless. Even youths will become weak and tired, and young men will fall in exhaustion. But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint. As you ponder this nugget of wisdom for yourself, please encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along tomorrow for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.' If you would like to listen to any of our past 1841 treks or read the Wisdom Journal, they are available at Wisdom-Trek.com.  I encourage you to subscribe to Wisdom-Trek on your favorite podcast player so that each day's trek will be downloaded automatically.  If you would also like to receive our weekly newsletter called ‘Wisdom Notes,' please email me at guthrie@wisdom-trek.com.
