Send us a textJesus has power over this world. He was able to do things that only God can do. Things are written down for us to believe. However, His true gift to us is the power for us to grow beyond what we are able. With his help, we are able to move to better ourselves as we grow in righteousness. Devoting your life to Jesus is required for salvation. He has said, “unless you believe that I AM He, you will die in your sins.” The entire reason He came to this earth and died for us, it was to bring peace between our selfish choices, which corrupt us, and God. Taking up your cross and following him, is to change your behavior and behave more selflessly, sharing, caring for everyone else, and renewing your mind in the ways of Godliness. =====Searching for answers to life's questions? We were visiting the George Herbert Walker Bush Presidential Library in College Station, Texas with David and Sallie Burnett in April of 2022. David took the seat behind the Resolute Desk and said these prophetic words- “It is up to us to give back to society. It is what makes us great.” Not all giants stand tall. Some walk among us quietly, leaving footprints not in sand but in the hearts of those they meet. Such was David Burnett. Lafayette, Colorado, is like many small towns—a place where neighbors know each other's names, where the rhythm of life hums along at a steady, familiar pace. But every so often, a soul comes along who doesn't just live in a town, across a cul-de-sac, but weaves himself into its very fabric. David Burnett was that kind of man.He was more than just a neighbor—he was a force for good. A board member on countless nonprofit organizations, he didn't just believe in making a difference; he did it, over and over again. And not by standing on soapboxes, not with grand speeches, but with something far more powerful: a giving heart, a generous spirit, and the courage to ask others to join him. Consider this: David served on the board of the Association for Community Living in Boulder County, advocating for those with developmental disabilities. He sat on the finance committee, ensuring funds were wisely allocated to provide services and opportunities for those who needed them most. At EPIC, he was a trusted advisor, working to expand employer-sponsored childcare. He understood that when working parents had reliable childcare, families and businesses thrived. And so, he worked. Not for accolades. Not for recognition. But because it was the right thing to do. He lent his expertise and heart to the Saint Joseph Hospital Foundation Board, knowing that quality healthcare should never be a privilege—it should be a promise. And the YMCA of Northern Colorado? David's fingerprints are there, too. The recent opening of the Inspire Preschool and Infant Care was a testament to his unwavering belief that all children—regardless of background—deserved a strong start. His dream was free universal preschool, a vision he pursued with the same fire that fueled his every endeavor. Some people shy away from asking for help. Not David. He knew the secret—people want to give; they just need someone to show them how. And he was that someone. A phone call, a handshake, a moment of eye contact—David had a way of making you believe that yes, you could do more, you should do more. And because he believed it, you believed it too. He and his wife, Sallie, raised their daughter, Brittany, with the same values. She watched, she learned, she followed in his footsteps. Devoting her life to nonprofits wasn't just a career choice; it was a calling, a legacy. Her father's legacy. And that legacy lives on. Recently, the David Burnett Childcare Center opened at the YMCA of Northern Colorado. Brittany said, “Dad worked so incredibly hard for this project and for free universal preschool for children of all ages across Colorado. His vision was to open access for early childhood education to give them a chance to succeed at an early age. I am proud of his legacy and heart for others.” As for David's career? He was a bank executive with Wells Fargo who happened to see beyond the money and into the currency of life itself. But even the strongest among us are not invincible. Colon cancer came for David at 55. Too soon. Far too soon. And yet, some legacies are not measured in years but in lives touched. In lessons taught. In communities made stronger, charities made richer, hearts made fuller. David Burnett was better than a friend. Better than a brother. More than next of kin. He was a resolute role model.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/success-made-to-last-legends--4302039/support.

The 9/11 attacks, as well as the ones in Madrid, London, Paris and Brussels; the genocides in Nazi Germany, Rwanda and Cambodia; the torture in dictatorial regimes; the wars in former Yugoslavia, Syria and Iraq and currently in Ukraine; the sexual violence during periods of conflict, all make us wonder: why would anyone do something like that? Who are these people? Drawing on 30 years of research, Alette Smeulers explores the perpetrators of mass atrocities such as war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide and terrorism. Examining questions of why people kill and torture and how mass atrocities can be explained, Smeulers presents a typology of perpetrators, with different ranks, roles and motives. Devoting one chapter to each type of perpetrator, Perpetrators of Mass Atrocities: Terribly and Terrifyingly Normal? (Routledge, 2023) combines insights from academic research with illustrative case studies of well-known perpetrators, from dictators to middlemen, to lower ranking officials and terrorists. Their stories are explored in depth as the book examines their behaviour and motivation. Perpetrators of Mass Atrocities thus provides a comprehensive understanding of the causes of extreme mass violence. Such knowledge not only can help the international criminal justice system to be able to attribute blame in a fairer way but can also assist in preventing such atrocities being committed on the current scale. Perpetrators of Mass Atrocities is essential reading for all those interested in war crimes, genocide, terrorism and mass violence. Learn more about your ad choices. THE Leadership Japan Series by Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan
Leaders are now leading invisible people. Their staff are no longer in sight or at best are only visible in person a couple of days a week. What are their people doing at home? How are they spending their time, how motivated are they, how engaged? Being in the office brings a certain level of discipline with it. You can see if people are goofing off. In an open office environment, you can hear the phone conversations with clients to gauge what is going on. When people are at home though, there is no way to be sure the team are using their time effectively. Time is life. Time management is life management. The key tool to controlling time is the schedule, daily, weekly, monthly and annually. The temptation is to just imagine that time management is only about work time management. We are holistic beings, multifaceted, with multiple responsibilities. We play different roles in our lives and the work role is only one of those. Concentrating all of our time on work throws our lives out of balance. The schedule is the key tool, so what goes into that schedule determines the life we lead. We have parents or children or siblings or partners or friends. Devoting all of our tine to work means that these key personal relationships are starved of the time needed to be allocated to them, in order for us to have a more rounded life. If we are late for lodging our personal taxes, unfocused about our finances because we are too busy working, then we will suffer both now and in the future. Getting our financial lives in order needs time and that time is in our schedule. We either allocate the time for that purpose or it gets allocated for something else. Our health is the same. If we just work all of the time and don't schedule time for exercise or relaxation, then we will encounter health issues. It is like running the machines 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The production numbers are initially impressive until the whole enterprise has shut down to spend time repairing the broken machines. We start by nominating the key roles we play in life. Work is certainly one of them, but not the only thing. After we establish the roles we play, we can now attach some goals for each of those roles. This becomes important, because the schedule prioritisation process will be run off the achievement of these goals. When we consider the competing goals, we have to make a choice about which goals have a higher priority than others and then time is allocated for the attainment of each of those goals. It sounds so simple and it is. The surprising thing is that you realise you are a multifaceted person and not just someone who works all the time. You need to allocate time to call your mother, to see the kids sports fixture, to go to the dentist, to check your bank accounts, to go for a run, etc. As the leader, this is the concept of time usage we need to be teaching to our team members. If you are running in the wrong direction, going faster doesn't help. If you rapidly climb the ladder and find it is on the wrong wall, that doesn't help. What do we want to have, do and be? We need to think about these aspects first, then set the direction, the goals to support that effort and the scheduling, based on priorities, to make it all a reality. Teaching people how to get more done each day at work is fine, but the modern leader needs to see their people in holistic terms. If they become sick or experience family breakups or financial instability because they only concentrated on time allocation for work, then they will not be able to fully contribute to the organisation. What's more they will be very unhappy and unmotivated and that doesn't produce the culture that breeds the quality of professionalism we need. The machine will break and require extended downtime. Having a key person in the business experience illness, which takes them out of the picture, can be devastating to the firm. We want our clients served by happy, engaged, healthy, satisfied and motivated staff. The leader's job is to educate the team about proper holistic time management. If we do that, we will have a much more successful and sustained business. We all spend a lot of our time working, so making that a happy, fulfilling experience rests on getting all these aspects of people's lives to be in alignment. For that, they need time and we teach them how to allocate that time in their schedules. Are you doing it?

In this final part of my conversation with Susan Merrell (author of Shirley: A Novel, teacher in the MFA in Creative Writing & Literature at the Lichtenstein Center of Stony Brook Southampton, and co-creator, with the novelist Meg Wolitzer, of the BookEnds Fellowship novel revision program) we talk about where her personal throughline is leading her next and she shares how she's been writing two different books for the last eight years (OMG). We covered: • Her two current book projects: one about a man haunted by a story he's read and another about living full-time in a “vacation town” thought to be abandoned in winter • Real estate privilege • The books she includes on her writing syllabus and why • Finding inspiration in everything, including cereal boxes • Giving up the plum nature of her current life vs chasing the dream. • Her friend's philosophy—whatever move you make tends to be the one your feet took you to • Why silence is her pick-me-up of choice • Her friend's magnificent roasted chicken Connect with Susan at susanscarfmerrell.com. Back in 1983, 14 year old Gillian Atkins had one love in her life - her horses, she was horse mad from a young age. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Should rationalists be spiritual / Spirituality as overcoming delusion, published by Kaj Sotala on March 26, 2024 on LessWrong. I just started thinking about what I would write to someone who disagreed with me on the claim "Rationalists would be better off if they were more spiritual/religious", and for this I'd need to define what I mean by "spiritual". Here are some things that I would classify under "spirituality": Rationalist Solstices (based on what I've read about them, not actually having been in one) Meditation, especially the kind that shows you new things about the way your mind works Some forms of therapy, especially ones that help you notice blindspots or significantly reframe your experience or relationship to yourself or the world (e.g. parts work where you first shift to perceiving yourself as being made of parts, and then to seeing those parts with love) Devoting yourself to the practice of some virtue, especially if it is done from a stance of something like "devotion", "surrender" or "service" Intentionally practicing ways of seeing that put you in a mindstate of something like awe, sacredness, or loving-kindness; e.g. my take on sacredness (Something that is explicitly not included: anything that requires you to adopt actual literal false beliefs, though I'm probably somewhat less strict about what counts as a true/false belief than some rationalists are. I don't endorse self-deception but I do endorse poetic, non-literal and mythic ways of looking, e.g. the way that rationalists may mythically personify "Moloch" while still being fully aware of the fact that the personification is not actual literal fact.) I have the sense that although these may seem like very different things, there is actually a common core to them. Something like: Humans seem to be evolved for other- and self-deception in numerous ways, and not just the ways you would normally think of. For example, there are systematic confusions about the nature of the self and suffering that Buddhism is pointing at, with minds being seemingly hardwired to e.g. resist/avoid unpleasant sensations and experience that as the way to overcome suffering, when that's actually what causes suffering. Part of the systematic confusion seem to be related to social programming; believing that you are unable to do certain things (e.g. defy your parents/boss) so that you would be unable to do that, and you would fit in better to society. At the same time, even as some of that delusion is trying to make you fit in better, some of it is also trying to make you act in more antisocial ways. E.g. various hurtful behaviors that arise from the mistaken belief that you need something from the outside world to feel fundamentally okay about yourself and that hurting others is the only way to get that okayness. For whatever reason, it looks like when these kinds of delusions are removed, people gravitate towards being compassionate, loving, etc.; as if something like universal love (said the cactus person) and compassion was the motivation that remained when everything distorting from it was removed. There doesn't seem to be any strong a priori reason for why our minds had to evolve this way, even if I do have a very handwavy sketch of why this might have happened; I want to be explicit that this is a very surprising and counterintuitive claim, that I would also have been very skeptical about if I hadn't seen it myself! Still, it seems to me like it would be true for most people in the limit, excluding maybe literal psychopaths whom I don't have a good model of. All of the practices that I have classified under "spirituality" act to either see the functioning of your mind more clearly and pierce through these kinds of delusions or to put you into mind-states where the influence of such delusions is reduced and you sh...

Join in as young leaders pose inquiries about life, personal development, and beyond! Quotes: “I want my kids to be 10 times better than I can ever be.” – Remi Adeleke “Everything that I need to succeed is either within me or within my grasp.” – Remi Adeleke “It's not always about what you see. It can be about what others have seen in you." – Remi Adeleke “The biggest lesson I learned is the importance of accepting rejection." – Remi Adeleke Takeaways: Reflect on your past experiences and conversations to identify your natural gifts and talents. Consider what you've always been naturally good at. Develop structures and boundaries in your personal life to ensure you are fully present for family while also pursuing your purpose and goals. Expect rejection as you pursue your dreams and be willing to persevere through setbacks. Commit to giving your best effort even if failure is possible. Consider how you can use your skills and platform to positively impact others, such as through mentorship, charitable work or creating inspiring media. Conclusion: Striving to make a difference in the community as a response to a troubled childhood is a powerful testament to resilience and compassion. By channeling past hardships into positive action, individuals not only uplift themselves but also inspire hope and transformation in others.

If you've ever said the wrong thing - or said the right thing the wrong way - you know how quickly your mouth can make a big mess. This is something I know all too well! But the good news is, it doesn't have to be that way!I'm absolutely thrilled to introduce a dear friend of mine, Kathleen Edelman. We've known each other for a little over a year, and her message on communication has been a game-changer in my life, affecting everything from my personal friendships to how I connect with my spouse and kids. Devoting her life to the cause of improving communication and relationships, Kathleen's work is rooted in helping individuals understand their unique temperaments (or color). Her core belief is simple but incredibly powerful: by speaking kindly to one another, we have the power to change the world. Today, she's here to share her insights, experiences, and valuable wisdom on the transformative power of communication. So, get ready for a conversation that's all about understanding how God uniquely created you and how that affects the way you talk and listen. I am so excited to dive into this conversation and discover more about how we can all improve our connections with one another and ultimately understand how the Author of our stories perfectly created us. "Priorities are determined by the relative strengths of your needs in relation to the range of opportunities afforded by your current circumstances." - Mark Solms. In his book, "Homo Deus", Yuval Noah Harari explains that lawns offered no practical value - they weren't used for grazing animals or growing food. The size and neatness of the lawn became an undeniable symbol of status, a peacock display of wealth that couldn't be imitated. Devoting precious land or time to a lawn was unthinkable for peasants. For them, a 'lawn', if they had any, was not for relaxation but for survival, used to grow food. This historical nugget came to mind recently as I spoke to Neuropsychologist and author of 'The Hidden Spring', Mark Solms. Mark explains that needs and actions are interconnected and must be prioritized based on urgency. For example, we become aware of the need to go to the bathroom when it becomes urgent, a concept referred to as "latchkey urgency". This concept of prioritising needs also applies to organisations, which must determine critical needs based on their current circumstances. For example, I briefly worked as head of Innovation in a large bureaucratic organisation. I should have done my homework on the organisation and presumed we could foster a culture of innovation. However, I soon realised the reality of this week's Thursday Thought. You must also prioritise in an organisation. You cannot paint #innovation over the rust of a toxic culture. You must first tend to the "cultural lawn" before adding the innovative decor. This is even more pronounced if an organisation is fighting for survival. In "Organisational Fight or Flight Mode", businesses tend to double down on what we already know and become resistant to anything new. Research from former Innovation Show guest Bruce Lipton provides an interesting parallel. His work shows that cells switch between 'protection and' growth modes' based on the surrounding environment and signals from the environment, body, and brain. When a cell perceives a threatening environment, it focuses on protection, thus preventing growth. Conversely, the cell thrives in a non-threatening environment, promoting growth. The same can be applied to humans and their work environments. In a psychological climate of fear, people are less likely to take creative risks or invest in long-term planning. However, when the environment is supportive and non-threatening, individuals are more likely to thrive, plan, and grow. This is where the privilege of having a 'private lawn' comes into play. The 'private lawn' is the ability to have the time and space to plan, think and grow. For some of us, daily survival consumes all our time and energy, leaving no room for strategic thinking or planning. As business leaders, creating an environment where everyone can access their 'private lawn' - a space for growth, planning, and forward-thinking is crucial. However, we must also plan by priority.
