Not every story can be or needs to be high octane intensity. In fact some of the best books are objectively quiet affairs. Low stakes does not mean low story or lack of compelling reading or viewing experience however. This week, Jules and Madeleine take a look at why low stakes can be just as enthralling as high stakes, and in many ways can provide deeper connections between the reader and the characters. How do you make a low stakes story compelling? What are the dos and don'ts of writing low stakes? And how do you keep a reader's attention focused on your MC when the world isn't ending? On the slab this week - Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree, The Rest of Us Just Live Here by Patrick Ness, Swordheart by T Kingfisher and many more. Title music: Ecstasy by Smiling Cynic

On GBC's ‘The Needle' last night, The Chief Minister said he didn't need a poll to talk about Brexit, it's the elephant in the room. Fabian Picardo said a Brexit treaty would deliver more EU benefits than ever, without compromising sovereignty. Meanwhile in London, The Foreign Secretary has told the European Scrutiny Committee the driving focus of Gibraltar treaty negotiations is to improve fluidity at the border with Spain. Speaking before the Commons Committee, Lord David Cameron said the system at the Gibraltar Airport would work in a similar way to checks carried out by French police at the St Pancras train station before boarding the Eurostar. Jonathan Sacramento spoke to us about the treaty negotiations in greater detail. Action for Housing has called once again on the Government to follow through on its commitment for a halfway house for men. It says following marital breakdowns it is usually men who leave the family home, and are sometimes made homeless. We invited the pressure group's Henry Pinna to the studio. The Government has reached an agreement with Solar Century Africa Limited for the design, construction, operation and maintenance of a new Battery Energy Storage System at the North Mole Power Station. The 16.5 million pound project is expected to make the power system more resilient and reduce the frequency of power cuts. Claire Hernandez told us more. And, GAMPA students have prepared a new play called 'A Monster Calls' - based on the best-selling novel by Patrick Ness - it will be performed later this month at the Inces Hall Theatre. We spoke to director Hannah Mifsud and two of the students involved: Kate Williamson and Nick Federico. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Life can be messy. Unexpected things happen, we may encounter issues or struggles, and, at times, things just get hard. No one enjoys the struggle, but as Patrick Ness reminds us - it is not about how we fall - it's how we get back up. This is the core of resilience. Given the fact that we will all have something that gets difficult, how can we not only survive it but also grow? Resilience is like a muscle that can be built and strengthened with the right focus and attention. Listen in to hear about some of our own challenges and the tools we use to get back up again. In this episode, Jessica and Darren Salquist talk about creating a word or phrase that can guide you through your life, month and year so that you can make respond and show up the best version of yourself everyday. Carefully defining your personal guiding word is a positive way to anchor your intentions for a new day, new month or new year. Patrick Ness states, "And there. The power of a word. The power of one word. That's where it all changes." We talk about our word/phrase from last year and our new word for the new year. We reflect on how using your word as a guide, we learned more about ourselves and shared how we use the word to elevate us to the next level. We share how we use our word/phrase when challenges arise. We discuss ways for you to determine your guiding word, whether that be for a quarter or a year. We are always reassessing on what is working and what what needs work. We provide Self-Mastery and Life-Coaching for those who are ready to take their lives to the next level. Lindsey Anderson Beer wrote and executive produced the hit Netflix original dramedy Sierra Burgess is a Loser before making the jump to direct the horror genre with Pet Sematary: Bloodlines, starring Jackson White and Natalie Alyn Lind. The story is based on an untold chapter of Stephen King's self-proclaimed, scariest property of all time. Up next, she will helm Paramount's Sleepy Hollow reboot as the writer, director, and producer. She also has several projects in various phases of development and production, including Disney's live action remake of Bambi, New Line's Hello Kitty, and Universal's Fast and Furious spinoff, which she wrote with Geneva Robertson-Dworet. Under her production banner Lab Brew, Lord of the Flies will be directed by Luca Guadagnino and written by Patrick Ness for Warner Bros."For me, I don't start a project unless I have a really clear understanding of who the main characters are and why this is a journey that's necessary for them to take. And why are these both the best and the worst people to be in this series? That's the question I ask myself all the time because you need to know: What are their strengths? What are their weaknesses? What are the dramatic tension points going to be where these specific people can really succeed or really fail in this scenario?I love people who are passionate, and Quentin Tarantino is just so passionate. And I've never been in a writer's room or even really in any kind of development experience where a director was just so passionate and so full of kind of energetic ideas. And that was really inspiring. Somebody who just completely knows their own point of view and gets excited by their own ideas is just fun to watch.I was about to shoot Pet Sematary: Bloodlines. I was finishing up my work on Star Trek 4, which I had to leave to do Pet Sematary, so I had been working with J. J. Abrams closely for a while on the script, and so I just asked if he had any advice, in terms of just practical stuff on set. And I mean, I've been on so many sets, but still, he's a director who's done so many projects. So he did give me some great advice just about, you know, making it through such long days and taking time for yourself and just kind of keeping your sanity that was kind of the focus of the advice. And he was just very generous and sweet about that.”www.imdb.com/name/nm5170222/www.creativeprocess.infowww.oneplanetpodcast.orgIG www.instagram.com/creativeprocesspodcast

And could a man write and direct like a really funny Barbie movie? Of course. But do I think that a man could have ever created the phenomenon that is Barbie? I don't. Because it was so infused with her authentic female experience in the patriarchy. And she put so much of that into it. And that's really what shines in that movie. And I think that movies like that where you kind of trust in one human creative and let their artistry and humanity shine is when you create these standout pieces of art that really capture imagination and attention.I just don't know why humans always seem intent on replacing themselves. You know, whether it's the industrial revolution or now, the AI revolution, we just can't help ourselves. But I think we need, we need to have we need to have strong regulations in place because there are certainly lots of professions where we certainly will be able to replace people with AI, but why? Why would we want to do that? Having a sense of purpose and the pride we all get from working, regardless of what that job is, is obviously so important. In addition to the money, I don't understand sometimes where people's motivations come from."www.imdb.com/name/nm5170222/www.creativeprocess.infowww.oneplanetpodcast.orgIG www.instagram.com/creativeprocesspodcast

"For me, I don't start a project unless I have a really clear understanding of who the main characters are and why this is a journey that's necessary for them to take. And he was just very generous and sweet about that.”Lindsey Anderson Beer wrote and executive produced the hit Netflix original dramedy Sierra Burgess is a Loser before making the jump to direct the horror genre with Pet Sematary: Bloodlines, starring Jackson White and Natalie Alyn Lind. "It's such a difficult and huge, huge, huge issue. And for me, it's absolutely not one-sided. And it's not a simple answer. Anybody who thinks that AI is going to completely save us is fooling themselves. And anybody who thinks that AI is just evil or harmful is also overlooking the very obvious benefits from drug and cancer research and other illnesses. And there are so many things that AI can help us solve very quickly that we don't yet have solutions to. That said, AI is made by us and it is filled with our own biases. And when you enable an incredibly smart, but biased and flawed thing to rule your life, that's never going to end up with a good outcome. So I think we need a lot of regulations and that we should be very scared of what happens when we allow AI to become too smart because at that point regulations aren't going to help. I honestly don't know if we've crossed that threshold. If we haven't, we're very close to crossing the threshold, in my opinion, of not being able to control what we've created, and that does scare me.For the creative process in particular, beyond the fact that it wouldn't make any sense for people to use AI because you can't copyright it, so studios and networks wouldn't own their own material, I can't even begin to tell you how many problems I see with using AI in the writing or directing process.I think science fiction is its own animal. This is why it has always been my first love. And it really allows you to think about our connection to the universe, to kind of be a futurist and think about what society could look like or has looked like. And I think there's no other genre for me, at least, where I feel like action and consequence and forecasting and imagination, all of those things can kind of come together in one story. Stories are inherently subjective. There's only one way to tell a great story and that is for the subject and the storyteller to have an authentic and strong point of view."Lindsey Anderson Beer wrote and executive produced the hit Netflix original dramedy Sierra Burgess is a Loser before making the jump to direct the horror genre with Pet Sematary: Bloodlines, starring Jackson White and Natalie Alyn Lind. "I think that the confidence that I'm talking about, in terms of allowing yourself to turn out something that isn't perfect and to still believe in yourself, I think that comes from my love of science and my understanding of the scientific process. So many experiments fail the first time or the second time or the third time. Also, so many startup companies in Silicon Valley fail and then they innovate and they innovate and they innovate and they become big hits. And I think it's the difference between what's called a fixed mindset versus a growth mindset where people think that they either have a fixed amount of talent or they believe that they have a growing amount of talent where more practice and more input can affect the outcome. And I don't believe that human beings have fixed talent. I believe that human beings have growing talent and that they shouldn't be so fearful of just trying and learning and growing."Lindsey Anderson Beer wrote and executive produced the hit Netflix original dramedy Sierra Burgess is a Loser before making the jump to direct the horror genre with Pet Sematary: Bloodlines, starring Jackson White and Natalie Alyn Lind. This week, we're joined by Adam Richard, shrunk to a microscopic size, and sent on a mission consisting mostly of ruthless moral self-examination. Meanwhile, somewhere else completely, a romcom is taking place. It's Into the Dalek. Notes and links Some of us are old enough to remember the constant television repeats of Fantastic Voyage (1966), in which a small submarine and its crew are shrunk to microscopic size to remove a blood clot from the brain of a scientist who is defecting to the West. The glamorous catsuited assistant to the crew's chief scientist is played by a young Raquel Welch. Richard identifies as the chief influences on this episode Fantastic Voyage and Rob Shearman's Doctor Who episode Dalek. (Which we discuss on Episode 137, To Mainsplain Aliens.) Of course, Peter Capaldi was most well known for his role in Armando Ianucci's political comedy series The Thick of It, in which he played Malcolm Tucker, the Prime Minister's sweary and frankly terrifying political enforcer. Ianucci will go on to create Veep, in which Julia Louis-Dreyfus plays the hapless Vice President of the United States, and Avenue 5, starring Hugh Laurie as the captain of a luxury space cruiser which goes catastrophically off course. Moffat's first sitcom Joking Apart has been mentioned before on the podcast. Its main character also discovers how terrible he is as a person during the course of the first series. Class was a short-lived and ill-fated Doctor Who spinoff, written by Patrick Ness and set at Coal Hill Academy. Peter Capaldi appears as the Doctor in Episode 1, and the season itself is broadcast between Series 9 and Series 10 of Doctor Who. It is cancelled after the first eight-episode run. Trinity Wells, the American newsreader during the first RTD era, does have her very own Big Finish story: Driving Miss Wells by James Goss, which is part of the second Lives of Captain Jack box set, released in 2019. How can you approach sympathetic villains and antiheroes from a Christian perspective, especially in our modern culture? In today's episode, Gabby, Hope, and Daeus give inspiring and thought-provoking advice on how to make a villain relatable without condoning his actions. They also explain how the Apostle Peter demonstrates that antiheroes need to be explored as much as heroes and villains. A Monster Calls is a 2016 dark fantasy drama film directed by J. A. Bayona and written by Patrick Ness, based on his 2011 novel of the same name, which in turn was based on an original idea by Siobhan Dowd. The film stars Sigourney Weaver, Felicity Jones, Toby Kebbell, Lewis MacDougall, and Liam Neeson, and tells the story of Conor, a child whose mother is terminally ill; one night, he is visited by a monster in the form of a giant anthropomorphic yew tree, who states that he will come back and tell Conor three stories. Get 30% off your first order by going to https://www.lightdarkco.com/freedom (lightdarkco.com/freedom) Your mindset is one of the most overlooked indicators that you're working in your business and not running your business. Not charging enough to be profitable, or doing everything manually in your business. We often don't trust ourselves to do the hard things because we're worried we'll make a mistake. So instead we research it until we have a headache and then do nothing. The market is only saturated for those who copy what everyone else is doing. Differentiated yourself and your brand. When you start felling burnout and when you're constantly turning down opportunities to meet up with friends, or spend time with your family in order to work more, you are wearing too many hats. You need to delegate to others and set up automations in order to gain back control of your business. The Covey Matrix helps you determine what tasks need YOU, which ones need to be delegated and which ones you should drop or postpone. https://weekplan.net/academy/weekly-planning/4-quadrants-of-time-management (Here is what that Covey Matrix looks like.) Mind your Noise because we're headed to New World for a discussion of Patrick Ness' famed first novel in the Chaos Walking series, The Knife of Never Letting Go (2008), as well as Doug Liman's long-delayed 2021 adaptation. This one is a struggle: not only is there plenty of walking, but the repetitive writing, the whimper of a climax and the disinterest in exploring colonialism (despite introducing it!) makes for frustrating reading. The film is watchable thanks to Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley's charm, but it fails to adapt large parts of the book and feels like a pretty standard big budget dystopian YA. Overall this is a mess...and the dog dies to boot!Wanna connect with the show? HAPPY (belated) PRIDE MONTH! Allegra celebrates by sharing her thoughts on all of Alice Oseman's novels, graphic novels, and of course the Netflix series Heartstopper. Other books mentioned include The Rest of Us Just Live Here and More Than This by Patrick Ness; Far From the Tree by Robin Benway; A Good Girl's Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson; and One Of Us Is Lying by Karen McManus. And because it all comes back to Uncle Rick, Allegra also talks about Percy Jackson, Heroes of Olympus, and Daniel Older's recent Ballad & Dagger. Oh, and she and her mom are incapable of EVER having a conversation that doesn't reference Benjamin Alire Saenz's Aristotle & Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe or Rainbow Rowell's Simon Snow trilogy.

Quote: Feelings don't try to kill you, even the painful ones. Anxiety is a feeling grown too large. A feeling grown aggressive and dangerous. You're responsible for its consequences, you're responsible for treating it. But...you're not responsible for causing it. You're not morally at fault for it. No more than you would be for a tumor. -Patrick Ness
