Did you know we have King Louis XIV to thank for fistula surgeries? After surgeons worked hard to find a cure for his rear-end ailment, the operation became the height of fashion, with people queuing up to go under the knife so they could be just like their king. That's just one of the incredible stories from Suzie Edge's new book Vital Organs: A History of the World's Most Famous Body Parts. Suzie Edge is a medical historian and frequently takes to TikTok to surprise (and sometimes shock) her followers with the true health stories of famous people from the past.In this episode, Suzie explores some of the most fascinating tales from her book, including the tale of Alexis St. Martin, who became a medical curiosity after an accident left his stomach partially open to the world. She explains why she loves talking about the bodies of famous people from the past – how it makes them feel less like myths or legends, and more like real people. And she touches on our obsession with stigmatising people based on their physical appearance – how movie villains often have facial disfigurements, or how historians often blamed Kaiser Wilhelm's warlike ways on his disabled left arm.To read about subjects like this and much more, visit newscientist.com. A humorous deep-dive into the varied—and oft-gruesome—deaths of the king and queens of England and Scotland. How the monarchs of England and Scotland met their deaths has been a wonderful mixture of violence, infections, overindulgence and occasional regicide. In Mortal Monarchs, medical historian Dr Suzie Edge examines 1,000 years of royal deaths to uncover the plots, accusations, rivalries and ever-present threat of poison that the kings and queens of old faced. From the "bloody" fascinating story behind Oliver Cromwell's demise and the subsequent treatment of his corpse and whether the arrow William II caught in the chest was an accident or murder, to Henry IV's remarkable skin condition and the red-hot poker up Edward II's rear end, Mortal Monarchs captivates, grosses-out and informs. In school, many of us learned the dates they died and who followed them, but sadly never heard the varied—and oft-gruesome—way our monarchs met their maker. Featuring original medical research, this history forms a rich record not just of how these people died, but how we thought about and treated the human body, in life and in death.

Dr Lucy, along with practice partner Dr Mary Barson run Real LIfe Medicine. This was the inspiration to create an online learning platform to share this information far and wide. Lucy has muscular dystrophy which impairs her mobility. In her 20's she managed her weight with exercise. Alas, this is no longer possible. She became overweight/obese and was insulin resistant. Two years ago, she lost 20 kgs by adopting a low carb lifestyle and more importantly has maintained this. Dr Lucy is known for her positive can-do nature and is an eternal optimist. Despite this, she has experienced depression for many years, which is now in remission thanks to her lifestyle changes. She practices meditation daily (well at least second daily). Dr Lucy also speaks at conferences for doctors on weight management, as well as events for the general public, and is now considered an expert in this field. Dr Lucy is a mum to two teenage girls - say no more.Initially trained in molecular biology, Suzie Edge completed her medical degree specialising in trauma and orthopedics. During her time working in the UK NHS, she became increasingly disillusioned with medicine and embarked on a career change, this time as a history focussed writer. Her focus on health, not only in her medical practice, but also for herself and how she can best achieve her health and physical activity goals lead her to low carb keto. But it wasn't without some challenges which we discuss how reaching out for help and connecting with community has helped her overcome and fully commit to positive lifestyle changes. In Januray 1661 three bodies were hanging in chains on the gallows at Tyburn. All three were long since dead and buried but had been dug up for a posthumous execution in revenge for the killing of the king. If thats not strange enough, Oliver Cromwell's head then had another three hundred years of being passed about the place. Suzie Edge is a medical doctor and historian, fasctinated by how we have treated the human body in life and in death, but let's face it, mostly in death. Welcome to Warts 'n' All, the new podcast from Dr Suzie Edge. Here we are all about human bodies and how we've treated them in life and in death (but mostly in death). Don't Lick The Rat is a coffin opening story with an extra sting in the rat's tail. Long ago, William Longspee had a ratty friend come to dinner in his vault under Salisbury Cathedral. The rat succumbed to poison, but in their defence, the pair said they had heard the Cathedral Spire was a fine place to visit.
