What's next for Lakers stars LeBron James and Anthony Davis. Plus, the futures of Russell Westbrook, Malik Monk and more on the latest edition of the HoopsHype podcast with Michael Scotto and Yossi Gozlan.
On Monday's show, we talked about ESPN's rankings of the 25 best players under 25 years old, based on production and potential. Our focus, vis-a-vis the Lakers centered on Austin Reaves and Talen Horton-Tucker. But as multiple people on the Locked On Lakers YouTube pointed out, that ignored Malik Monk, who at 24 is under the age threshold. So how close is he to making this list? Well... not very. And it's nothing personal, either. But not only is Monk nowhere close to the list's 25th ranked player - Memphis' Jaren Jackson Jr. - he's behind other players who didn't make the list. Think Anfernee Simons, Robert Williams III, Josh Giddey, OG Onunoby, Kevin Porter Jr., Jordan Poole, Saddiq Bey, Keldon Johnson, Gary Trent Jr., Jonathan Kuminga, Lonzo Ball and so on. So not only do the Lakers lack that kind of talent, they lack access to it. So does that mean it's better to start over? If so, that's almost certainly a guarantee the Lakers will be out of contention for a few years, and who knows if they get back? But if they keep pushing the LeBron/AD core and throw everything they have at it... they could end up in same place, except with future assets stripped away. It's a pickle. Meanwhile, more names are trickling out as potential persons of interest in the Lakers coaching search. It's VERY early and none of this truly indicates the thinking of the team, but one thing is clear: There's not much of a through line. Will the names get more coherent with time? Meanwhile, is this really the season for Lakers fans to relish in the failures of the Clippers? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: How close is Malik Monk to being an elite under-25 player? SEGMENT 2: What does Brandon Ingram's age say about the future paths available to the Lakers? SEGMENT 3: Early names in the Lakers coaching search, and a discussion of schadenfreude. The Lakers are in a precarious spot right now. For the time being, even with LeBron James and Anthony Davis as a foundation, they don't look particularly built to win now. But in the meantime, any future without those two seems equally problematic, and to illustrate the the latter issue, the Kamenetzkys dug into ESPN's new list of Top 25 players under 25, based on future potential (Insider account required). Seventeen of the 30 NBA teams had at one player on that list. Of the remaining 13 teams without one, another six were currently in the playoffs. And that leaves seven teams, including the Lakers, in neither category. And when you look at the company they're keeping, it'll likely give fans serious pause. Talen Horton-Tucker and Austin Reaves have shown some promise, but neither have come close to belonging on this type of list. And while the Lakers have excelled at finding young talent inside and outside of the draft, they're low on picks, and can only hit the undrafted jackpot so many times. Which puts them in quite the pickle now and moving forward. Plus, do the Lakers misunderstand their own history? Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky Segment 1: Andy and Brian discuss the ESPN list. Segment 2: Why THT and Reaves have value, but at least for now, don't necessarily serve as quality building blocks or assets. Segment 3: What the Game 1's can teach us about the Lakers. LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Russell Westbrook and Carmelo Anthony all sat out of the Lakers' loss to the Warriors up in San Francisco,. So how are fans reacting to the stars sitting out? Some, at least, are bringing up comparisons to Kobe Bryant, and suggesting that LeBron is sitting at a time when Kobe would have played. Meanwhile, Talen Horton-Tucker went off for a career high 40 points against Golden State. On the one hand, that's awesome! 40 is a lot, and good for him. It certainly can't hurt to do a little image rehab in a season that has, overall, been a real disappointment for THT. But do nights like this one actually add any clarity to his future? As trade bait, or in a (hopefully) revamped Lakers rotation? Finally, if the Lakers are going to fix what ails them, it will need to start with everyone understanding their role in how the franchise has arrived at this point. Players, management, coaching, and down the line. Is the front office off to a good start, in this regard? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: What happens when fans use the memory and mythology of Kobe as a weapon against other players? SEGMENT 2: The Lakers are in a tough spot with THT, and his 40-point outburst helps explain why. SEGMENT 3: Are we off to a good start in the Summer of Accountability? The Lakers' 2021-22 season has been an absolute disaster. Some reasons are beyond anybody's control... but many issues could have been avoided through better decisions. And while fans will - not without reason - point to the Russell Westbrook trade as the flashpoint for where everything that's fallen apart, it hasn't been the only bad call over the last few years. Poor decisions, major and minor, have helped what looked like a strong franchise fall apart in a hurry. So how did this happen? The Kamenetzkys spoke with Bleacher Report scribe and NBA cap expert Eric Pincus. He breaks down the personnel choices that went wrong, accounting mistakes they've made with contracts like Talen Horton-Tucker and Austin Reaves, squandered assets and draft picks and more. What is going on in the front office that promotes these kinds of mistakes? Is the decision-making infrastructure up to snuff? And what can they do going forward to fix things? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: How important is it to look at transactions in a holistic way? How do individual moves impact each other? What's the cause and effect? How did the Anthony Davis deal lay some of the ground the Lakers walk on now? SEGMENT 2: Reviewing the Westbrook deal. How that went wrong... but how it was more the end point, not the start, of the team's devolution. SEGMENT 3: Who makes the decisions in El Segundo? Is the infrastructure what it should be? Following Monday's incredible performance in the team's win over Cleveland, LeBron James's problematic knee swelled up like a balloon, and he missed Wednesday's game against the Sixers at The Crypt. Anthony Davis is still out with an ankle injury. Talen Horton-Tucker, too. And the Lakers lost! So why are they feeling so good about themselves? It's a small sample size, for sure, but the Lakers can honestly say, backed up by the tape, that they've played significantly better over their last four games. That includes Wednesday's Very Scrappy Effort against a high end Philadelphia team. Assuming they can get into the play-in—and in that spirit the Lakers are clearly putting a lot of emphasis on Sunday's game against the Pelicans—it's clear they're developing a level of confidence that has been hard to find all year. Is it deserved? Maybe, maybe not. But that's not the relevant question, really. One thing that's helped: The Lakers are playing with a rotation that nobody would have guessed in October, mostly because half of the dudes weren't even on the team. And one guy that was (Austin Reaves) was expected to carry bags and live in his warm up. But the new guys have skill sets that have boosted the team's fortunes. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: LeBron misses Wednesday's game, which is kinda worrisome, but really drives home how important Sunday's game is to the team. SEGMENT 2: The Lakers, earned or not, are starting to feel good about themselves. And that's a prerequisite for having even a small shot at making noise in the postseason. SEGMENT 3: It's a whole new group playing for the Lakers, and they finally have some bounce. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The Lakers lost to the Raptors on Monday night in a game that was not as close as the final margin. Pete and Darius break down the game, focusing on how the Raptors small-ball lineups stood in stark contrast to how the Lakers micro groups and the advantages Toronto gained from their size discrepancy on the wings. Then later the guys discuss Wenyen Gabriel's fit on the roster and why they think he should play more, as well as their thoughts on Talen Horton-Tucker's recent stretch of games. For a guy who isn't on the floor right now, Anthony Davis made a lot of headlines Sunday. First, he indicated progress in his work to return to the floor following a badly sprained ankle. Out of the walking boot, and expressing belief he'll be back before the end of the year. Then, Davis said he thought the Lakers would have beaten Phoenix in the first round of the playoffs last year had he not been forced from that series with groin injury. And that the Suns know it, too. Even if you agree, and many people do, does saying so help the Lakers now? (It certainly didn't Sunday.) More importantly, what did Davis reveal about this team's approach and mentality? Still, that he might be back in time means the Lakers still have hope, improbable as it may be. Meanwhile, Frank Vogel is exceedingly frustrated. Sunday's postgame press conference was as close as he gets to saying "**** this roster," and just walking out the door and quitting. Why was tonight different than others throughout the year? It's not like this is the first bad loss the Lakers have endured. Finally, another big milestone for LeBron James, while Talen Horton-Tucker reveals the extent of the ankle injury through which he's currently playing. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers lose in Phoenix thanks at least in part to Anthony Davis and some bulletin board material he provided. SEGMENT 2: Should Davis be a little more responsible with his words? Plus, an update on his health. SEGMENT 3: The Lakers have some shred of hope, even if it's not tangible or based in evidence. There were many items of great importance on display for the Lakers in this win over the Wizards. There was great energy and a sense of fun, something often missing throughout the course of this slogging season. There were strong supporting performances from Talen Horton-Tucker, Malik Monk and Austin Reaves. There was even a game within the game, as Kyle Kuzma and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope returned to L.A. for the first time since getting traded to D.C. for Russell Westbrook. And LeBron James put up 50, which was certainly item #1 on the importance scale. With his finger on the pulse of this game and this crowd, LeBron ran roughshod all over the Wizards, particularly in a third quarter where he put up 19. He was also in full-on "entertainer" mode, which the fans ate up, and his teammates fed off. All in all, a very needed victory, and a rare night where the Lakers were, dare we say, very entertaining. Ooof. This one hurts. The Lakers, in a truly must-win situation, dropped a rough one against Clippers, as has been their wont all year. (105-102, for those keeping score. And the formula, as it were, felt mighty familiar. The Lakers fell behind big... only to dig themselves out of the hole... only to find themselves unable to close the deal in the final minutes. There were good second halves from Talen Horton-Tucker and Carmelo Anthony, along with a great first half from Dwight Howard, but Russell Westbrook was merely fine, and LeBron James was, frankly, pretty bad, which the Lakers simply couldn't afford. And speaking of LeBron, he addressed the swirling rumors about his discontent with the Lakers. Interesting comments, if selectively candid. Talen Horton-Tucker and Austin Reaves don't play the same style of game and both have had wildly different seasons in terms of expectations and their performance relative to them. But, as the Lakers head into the All-Star break, both project to be key performers and can build on a string of good performances -- particularly in their last game against the Warriors. Pete, Mike, and Darius discuss both THT and Austin, offering thoughts on the growth in each of their games, how they've been positive contributors of late, and what the next steps are to get the best out of both in the team's final 25 games. I problemi dei Lakers nel crunch time, lo sviluppo di Talen Horton-Tucker e un commento alla deadline con uno sguardo alla off-season
The Lakers don't necessarily benefit from moral victories at this point, given how deep they've fallen in the standings. All the feels won't help them climb out of the hole they've dug for themselves. But what if that hole isn't really climbable? The Lakers, barring collapses from a few different teams, are very likely to finish either eighth or ninth in the West. The difference matters - needing one win in the play-in scenario vs. two - but it's going to be hard for the Lakers to jump any higher. Nor do they feel like a good bet to slide all the way to 11th. So moral victories help... if they're good for morale? And that's potentially the takeaway from a loss in San Francisco Saturday night, where the Lakers looked pretty good in the halfcourt, got good performances from Russell Westbrook and Talen Horton-Tucker, and stuck with a very good Warriors team. Had LeBron (9-27, including 1-10 in the fourth) and Anthony Davis (5-13) played better, it's likely a different conversation. Was getting past the deadline a chance for the team to reset? For Westbrook particularly? Frank Vogel seemed to think so. And what about the buyout market? Adrian Wojnarowski (ESPN) reports the Lakers will aggressively pursue soon-to-be-bought-out San Antonio Spur Goran Dragic. Sure, he could help, but how attractive a destination will the Lakers be? One reason games like Wednesday night vs. Utah matter. Win or lose, the Lakers need to show some potential. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: A moral victory, because it's good for morale? SEGMENT 2: How getting past the deadline helps the Lakers, and Westbrook particularly. SEGMENT 3: LeBron James passes Kareem in an impressive but made-for-TV sounding stat. Plus... GORAN! It's a good thing style points don't count, because the Lakers earned none of them in Wednesday's win over the Trail Blazers, 99-94 at crypto.com Arena. But a win is a win is a win, at least as far as the standings are concerned, and this was an important one. The Lakers put a themselves in position to leapfrog the Clippers with a win Thursday night and have a better chance of finishing in the seven or eight spot as opposed to the nine or ten. The former requires only one win to get into the big boy playoffs, the latter requires two. One is better. That said, it was an ugly game offensively for the Lakers, who got big games from Anthony Davis (more to come on him) and Carmelo Anthony (24 points) but not much else. And with LeBron out, when a couple other guys can't pick up the slack it can mean trouble. On the other end, the Lakers were better than they had been on the trip, even if aided by a pretty inept Blazers attack. Still, improvement is improvement, and the Lakers will take it. Davis, for his part, continues to play like the dominant, elite level guy the Lakers need him to be if they're going to have any shot at a late season run and some playoff success. If he's playing at a "top five" level, and LeBron is "Playoff LeBron" (definitionally a "top five" performer) that gives the Lakers two ultra-elite guys, which is something no other Western Conference team has. Is it possible Davis heard some of the criticism lobbed his way in his absence? How might Kobe have tried to motivate AD had that been the partnership? And is Talen Horton-Tucker feeling the pressure that comes with being at the center of trade rumors? Particularly since he's the only guy on the roster (only guy playing, at least) who is in them? It's a weird situation for sure. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: What an ugly win. What a badly needed win. SEGMENT 2: Anthony Davis is balling out, and if you're looking for reasons to be optimistic, that's the one to grab. SEGMENT 3: More on Davis, plus looking at THT's performance heading into the trade deadline. Are the rumors wearing on him? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Sitting three games under .500, there are only a couple ways for the Lakers to improve as a team over the final 30ish games of the season. First, get everyone back on the floor and playing together. Specifically, LeBron James with Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook, and see if the team can harness enough star power to paper over their other issues. The second? Make moves ahead of the February 10th trade deadline. Virtually every path to a consequential player starts with forward Talen Horton-Tucker. Like most things associated with the team this year, THT hasn't exactly been horrible, but he's definitely not hit the more optimistic projections, and certainly hasn't filled the role of a consistent contributor in ways the Lakers have needed. So how much does all of that impact his trade value? Why might teams want him? Why might they not? How did last offseason potentially paint the Lakers into a corner now, in terms of maximizing THT's value? From there, listeners have questions regarding Frank Vogel, left on the Locked On Lakers YouTube channel. Specifically, is the media too easy on the guy? How much blame for what's gone wrong does he deserve? Would another coach get better results? Is he getting enough from his roster, even if that roster has significant flaws? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers need to get better. The trade market is one avenue available, but it's a pretty narrow one for them. SEGMENT 2: Just how tradeable is Talen Horton-Tucker? SEGMENT 3: Is the media too easy on Frank Vogel? Is the guy getting a pass from "the media" for everything that's gone wrong this season? The Lakers, obviously, are at a critical juncture in their season. It's getting awful close to make-or-break time, in terms of understanding just how realistic a deep playoff run is going to be. And fundamentally, that means getting Anthony Davis back on the floor. That could happen Tuesday, as the Lakers star was upgraded to probable after nearly suiting up against the Heat on Sunday. Not only does Davis make the team better on both sides of the floor based solely on his talent - for all the talk of vaguely disappointing play from him this season, it's in the context of a guy being a top 15 player instead of a top 5 - he also allows: some pressure to come off LeBron offensively slots Westbrook into a better spot (and gives Russ another large man to pass to at the rim) helps the Lakers settle into their small-ball identity for real. ...and more. Really, there's nothing that doesn't improve with Davis available. But perhaps most importantly, with nine games left before the trade deadline (assuming Davis plays Tuesday) it gives the Lakers a decent chunk of time to see what exactly they are, what the needs might be, and whether or not they're good enough to make an aggressive upgrade at the deadline worthwhile. And if the Lakers do make a move, what kind of move is available? The pieces they have to offer aren't any different - Talen Horton-Tucker, Kendrick Nunn and a first-round pick - but perhaps the return might be? Would the Lakers have a shot at Jerami Grant? Lesser deals for a Terrance Ross-type? Would they actually pull the trigger on a trade sending Westbrook to Houston for John Wall? What if that deal expanded to include Eric Gordon, too? There's a ton to unpack with those ideas, and the process stars in this episode! HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: What Anthony Davis does for the Lakers when he returns. SEGMENT 2: Why the next nine games are critical for understanding just what the Lakers have heading into the trade deadline. SEGMENT 3: Would you trade Westbrook for Wall? What about an enhanced version of that deal? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Built Bar Built Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. The Athletic's Jared Weiss joins Sam Vecenie to talk about the NBA Trade Deadline, giving a deep dive on where the market stands by talking about the teams and players that will shape this season's event. We dive deep into the following players: Ben Simmons, Myles Turner, Caris LeVert, Jerami Grant, Eric Gordon , Marcus Smart, Talen Horton Tucker, Buddy Hield, Robert Covington, Joe Ingles, and Kenrich Williams as a stand-in for all of the guys under the radar who could help teams. With the taste of Wednesday's hideous loss to the Kings still too fresh in the collective mouth of Lakers Nation, it's no surprise that Thursday's news was centered a lot around potential trades. Reports that the Lakers are interested in Toronto Raptors swingman Gary Trent Jr., who at only 23 has come into his own as a shooter and would certainly give the Lakers another threat on the perimeter. Could he be had for the standard Lakers package of Talen Horton-Tucker, Kendrick Nunn and draft considerations? Would that be a deal worth making for LA? Is the team any closer to a viable path to Detroit's Jerami Grant, now that the Knicks (an awkward but frequently mentioned potential suitor for the Pistons forward) acquired former Hawk Cam Reddish Thursday afternoon? How about a hypothetical uber-blockbuster that would send Westbrook to Philly for Simmons AND Tobias Harris, who is apparently available if it helps the Sixers move their disgruntled star. The RealGM trade constructor says a deal can be done. But would Philly, or any team, agree to take on Westbrook given his current performance and huge player option for next year? Those topics, plus a look at the team's supporting cast. Trevor Ariza is back in the lineup, but of late at least looks every bit of 36 years old. Stanley Johnson, meanwhile, continues playing hard but with more exposure it's easy to see his limitations, and why he was available for the Lakers to begin with. One question the Lakers have to consider: Is this team worth trying to rescue? Or would it be better to wait until the offseason, when it's easier to construct deals and the market is more stable? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Ariza and Johnson - How is this going to play out? Can either be significant contributors over the second half? What would that look like? SEGMENT 2: Looking at rumors around Gary Trent Jr.. If the Lakers could swing it, should they? Would Toronto agree to that? SEGMENT 3: How about a hypothetical built around Ben Simmons? Yes? No? Either way, it demonstrates how hard it will be to unwind the Russ deal. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Built Bar Built Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Well, the Lakers' four-game winning streak has come to a crashing halt. Sunday's 127-119 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies wasn't nearly as close as the score might indicate, much less indicative of any balanced attack. LeBron James continued his recent streak of crushing it (35 points on 14-19 shooting, plus nine rebounds and seven assists), but everyone else, save perhaps Talen Horton-Tucker in the first quarter, was invisible on both ends of the floor. Grizzlies superstar Ja Morant provided a block and dunk for the ages, and got big help from Desmond Bane (23 points), Jaren Jackson Jr. (21 points) and Kyle Anderson (14 points, eight assists), among others. The outcome was indicative of how the Lakers have played better of late, and have finally been gifted some crucial continuity, but have a lot of ground to make up closing the gap between them and the NBA elites. In the meantime, Russell Westbrook, who scored just six points on 2-12 shooting, appeared very unhappy after this game. Is there a reason for concern about his headspace? Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Kamenetzkys discuss the various ways Memphis thoroughly outplayed every Laker not named "LeBron" or "James." SEGMENT 2: Praise for Ja, plus more talk about what hurt the Lakers in this loss. SEGMENT 3: What to make of Westbrook's recent shooting struggles, and his overarching mood. Style points, and the demand for them, have been outlawed on the Locked On Lakers podcast. Which is good, because Tuesday's win over Sacramento wasn't long on them. The Lakers didn't shoot the ball particularly well, and they didn't defend particularly well, either. But they didn't give the ball away to a subpar Sacramento team - only five turnovers total - that needs some favors to be competitive on any given night. Only one first half turnover for the team overall, and none at all from Russell Westbrook! Who didn't have one the entire game, the first time that's happened in a regular season since 2016. Then LeBron James (14 points) and Malik Monk (11 points) took over in the fourth quarter and put the game away, delivering L.A. its third straight win. Badly needed ones, too, over weak opponents chasing them in the standings. With that in mind, what should fans feel good about? Where should they worry? LeBron's play continues to marvel, and Monk is truly settling into a role where he can (should?) be more a focus offensively in late game situations than Westbrook. And Talen Horton-Tucker had his best game in a long, long while. Plus, Dwight Howard! Frank Vogel used him against a Kings squad that refused to play along with the Lakers' small lineups, and Howard's 20 minutes were incredibly impactful. The Lakers aren't anywhere near where they need to go, but are taking care of business for the time being. That's about as much as can be expected, night to night. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers beat Sacramento because they took care of the ball. Funny how that works. SEGMENT 2: Talen Horton-Tucker and Dwight Howard played big roles in the win. Are they going to be big pieces going forward? SEGMENT 3: Is Malik Monk a better fourth quarter option offensively than Westbrook? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Built Bar Built Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Not that you need to be told, but 2021 was not exactly a good 12 months for the Lakers. One season with high hopes flamed out in a wave of injuries, and another is on track to disappoint as well, thanks to another combination of bad health and bad roster choices. But that future isn't yet written! It's time to look back at the year that was, and find reasons for Lakers fans to be optimistic about what still could be for the 2021-22 squad. Any sense of hope, though, is contingent at least in part on winning all the winnable games the Lakers have in front of them, even with Anthony Davis still sidelined. That starts with the next four games on the schedule -- Friday vs. Portland, Sunday vs. Minnesota, then games against the Kings and Hawks. All at home. All teams below .500, two of them (the Wolves and Sacto) tightly packed behind the Lakers in the West. That these games are more important than Wednesday's loss in Memphis, or upcoming games against, say, Utah, explain where the team is right now. The Lakers will get some reinforcements, though, which should help them capitalize on what's coming. Austin Reaves, Trevor Ariza and Kent Bazemore will all be available this weekend, opening up more options for Frank Vogel/David Fizdale as the team leans into small lineups. It's time to shove the old year out the door, and welcome in a new one! HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers have four very winnable games coming up, all at home. They need to take advantage. SEGMENT 2: The Lakers are getting (badly needed) players back. Is that going to squeeze Talen Horton-Tucker from the rotation? Why the Lakers could find themselves in a bit of a Catch-22. SEGMENT 3: Looking back at 2021, finding reasons for optimism in 2022. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Sometimes it's better to never have a chance at that thing you didn't think you could have, right? Because when it's suddenly in your grasp - when it's something you should actually get - seeing it slip away is doubly frustrating. That's Wednesday's game in Memphis for the Lakers. On the second night of a back-to-back against a team playing excellent basketball, it was expected the Lakers would probably lose. Instead, they led for three quarters, building up a 13 point lead as the fourth quarter approached. It all went south from there. 16 points in the final frame sunk the purple and gold. Too many turnovers, too many critical misses (including another blown bucket at the rim by Russell Westbrook), and too much Ja Morant means the Lakers lose a chance to get back to .500. To say the least, the Lakers were showing their frustration after the game. Who can blame them? LeBron James was once again excellent, stretching his streak of 30+ point games to six. He dropped 37 on the eve of his 37th birthday, and nearly had his second straight triple double. But again, it wasn't enough. That shouldn't keep people from appreciating the totality of his career, even in the midst of a disappointing season, and the unprecedented run of excellence we're seeing. Some context is helpful. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers lose a disappointing game in Memphis. Watching this one get away hurt. SEGMENT 2: Talen Horton-Tucker's slump is getting longer, and more problematic. What happens if he doesn't turn it around? Plus some more Westbrook talk. Those fourth quarter breakdowns are a problem. SEGMENT 3: Let's talk about LeBron, because what he's doing, and what he's done, is unbelievable. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Strike up the band! After five straight losses, including a Christmas day loss so infuriating fans and media were relocating Russell Westbrook to Houston, Philadelphia or anywhere else the rumor mill deemed just feasible enough, the Lakers are finally off the schneid! Tuesday saw them beat a scrappy (if hapless) Houston Rockets squad 132-123, in a game that was too competitive for true comfort, but not without some interesting facets. To begin, interim head coach opted for a new starting lineup with Talen Horton-Tucker coming off the bench, Malik Monk and newbie Stanley Johnson at the forward sports, and LEBRON JAMES starting at center. (He also limited the rotation to just eight players, none of whom were true bigs.) The team in turn responded with their best offensive showing in a while. 20+ points from Monk and Carmelo Anthony. Triple-doubles for LeBron and Westbrook. And while Fizdale emphasized how this was not necessarily a permanent look moving forward, it's pretty clear we'll be seeing a lot of small ball in the Lakers' future. And until Anthony Davis returns, it appears a huge chunk of the center minutes will be played by LeBron, who used this game as yet another reminder of his exceptional versatility and basketball I.Q. To make this positional shift just 48 hours before turning 37 years old, nineteen seasons in, is legitimately pretty amazing. Next, it's LeBron's controversial (and very irresponsible) COVID/Spiderman meme, and took a listener email about Fizdale and Frank Vogel. After the Lakers' tough loss to Phoenix on Tuesday, one of many moments of a continually tough season, interim head coach David Fizdale explained how LeBron James and Frank Vogel are working in concert to help the team stay patient, but also focused and accountable. Beyond this being good to hear from a process standpoint, it was also nice to hear just as verification of the two on the same page, given the rumors flying around that Vogel is coaching for his job. Frankly, you know things are getting weird when Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium was asked on Pat McAfee's show about internet chatter that LeBron may ask for a trade. A very far-fetched prospect indeed, but dumb rumors like this are only happening because the team is stuck at .500, Anthony Davis is hurt, LeBron ain't getting any younger, etc. As such, it's important for LeBron and Vogel to be unified. Meanwhile, should Trevor Ariza, who played well against the Suns, get moved into the starting lineup, presumably for Talen Horton-Tucker? How can his minutes, and the minutes of his fellow oldies, be kept down, whether starting or coming off the bench? And finally, Thursday's game against the Spurs marks the final game inside Staples Center, heretofore (or until the next naming rights deal) known as Crypto.Com Arena. A lot of fans don't like this change. Are they making something out of nothing? Or is the name of the building meaningfully connected to what's happened there? Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky Segment 1: The Kamenetzkys discuss chatter that LeBron would want to be traded, plus his relationship with Frank Vogel Segment 2: Should the Lakers consider starting Trevor Ariza, or just taking Talen Horton-Tucker out of that lineup? The Lakers were shorthanded entering Tuesday's game against the Phoenix Suns, arguably the best team in the NBA. L.A. has had zero continuity all season long, the Suns as much as any team in the league. The Lakers have a roster that is, to be sure, kinda weird. Phoenix has one of the most well-constructed groups you'll find. No surprise then that after a slow first half where they couldn't hit the broad side of a barn, the Suns used the final two quarters to pull away from the home team, beating the Lakers at Staples, 108-90. LeBron James played very well, Russell Westbrook did too (until some late turnovers, at least), illustrating how little margin for error the Lakers have right now. How they navigate games, particularly against good teams, is going to be tricky. On a positive note, the Lakers got a good performance from Trevor Ariza in his second game of the year, hitting all three of his triples and playing his typically steady, well-positioned defense. Talen Horton-Tucker, however, in his first game back from Covid protocols, was a disaster, as was Isaiah Thomas. Who can be a reliable "third guy" for the time being? Finally, Adam Silver has said the NBA won't be going on a Covid-related hiatus. Should it? Is it safe to keep playing? Or has the world changed enough with vaccines and treatments that the response has to change as well? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers lose on Tuesday, frankly as expected. What does it say about what's coming? SEGMENT 2: Ariza looked good, THT looked terrible, and the Lakers had better perform over their next few games, or they could have real problems in the Western Conference standings. SEGMENT 3: Should the NBA hit the brakes on the 2021-22 season, with Omicron ripping through the league and multiple teams dealing with outbreaks? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Well, the good cheer generated by the win in Dallas was fun while it lasted. Less than 48 hours after Austin Reaves became a folk hero with a game-winner against the Mavericks, all hell has broken loose for the Lakers. Since then, the Lakers have lost games to the Timberwolves (Friday) and Bulls (Sunday), lost various teammates to the health and safety protocols (as of this recording, the unavailable include Reaves, Talen Horton-Tucker, Avery Bradley, Malik Monk, Dwight Howard, and Kent Bazemore), lost head coach Frank Vogel to the protocols... and most importantly, lost Anthony Davis to a sprained knee in Minnesota. That injury is expected to keep AD out at least one month, and who knows how much longer, given his history with ailments. So. What are the Lakers to do from here? To begin, continue to play as hard as they did during the loss in Chicago, which will at least give them a fighting chance against many teams. (They can also do things like stop turning the ball over and missing free throws, but that approach has been ignored all season.) With Trevor Ariza finally back, they can further lean into playing the small ball that best suits them (albeit without Davis, which is the best version of that look). They can perhaps utilize Isaiah Thomas, here on a 10-day hardship contract, and having put up double figures in both games since he arrived. Given how Davis' absence dramatically affects the Lakers' defensive upside, they're gonna have to score more. But really, they're just gonna have to hang on tight for dear life. Make no mistake. Davis' injury is a really big, bad deal, and there ain't much way around that fact. Los Angeles' decision to trade for Russell Westbrook helped assemble the team's big three, but also made the Lakers old. Mind bogglingly old.As it stands right now the Lakers signed roster has an average age of 32.4 years old after signing Carmelo Anthony and Malik Monks, making it not only the oldest in the league — but one of the oldest of all time. That could move down slightly more, should restricted free agent Talen Horton-Tucker re-sign with the team they would still have an average age of 31.4, older than the 2015-16 Spurs, who had Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Andre Miller, all born in the 1970s.This makes the Lakers the powerhouse team of 80s kids, and I love it. Perhaps the most stunning element of this old team situation is that the Lakers don't have a single player on their roster who was drafted in the first round by the organization. Many y oung players were given up to acquire Anthony Davis, then more with Westbrook — which led to this elderly movement.
