Brad Friedel played his college ball at UCLA and had a stint at Liverpool before a longer and seriously fruitful one at Blackburn Rovers. He also stopped shots for Aston Villa and for Tottenham Hotspur, where in his final season he ran into a guy named Mauricio Pochettino. The goalkeeper, who was capped 82 times for the U.S. Men's National Team, got a front-row seat to the Argentine's methods when he came in and transformed the club, and his faith has never wavered that Pochettino will deliver now as head coach of the American team.We talked about all that when Friedel joined the show this Thanksgiving week, but we also got into a fascinating early chapter of his career. Esperpentos Tarantinianos que cinematográficamente pueden gustar, pero que plasmados en una cancha de baloncesto pues nada más lejos de la realidad. Y si encima los protagonistas son los nuestros pues apaga y vámonos, para pillar la claqueta y gritar: corten!! Y ahí ya dejamos cualquier opción posible a la hora de cortar. La primera cabeza fue la de Bruno Fernando, pero bien podría ser alguna que otra más visible o importante en el banquillo. Paciencia sí, pero lo que comenzaba como temporada ilusionante se está torciendo de mala manera y ¿Que puede acabar muy bien? pues también lo sabemos, pero esto no arranca y las sensaciones a día de hoy son muy malas. Tras la victoria en el clásico en Euroliga precedido de otra de prestigio si bien el Fenerbahce no estaba en su mejor momento, han venido dos derrotas más en Euroliga a cada cual peor (cierto que contra dos buenos equipos y plantillas) cuando no contábamos que se fuese a caer el equipo de tremenda manera. Incapaces en 20 min de remontar 7 pts en Valencia e ídem en casa al descanso perdiendo de 14 contra Panathinaikos. A poco sabe la victoria en casa contra Bilbao Basket que precisamente costó más de la cuenta también yendo perdiendo al descanso por 4 pts y con ya más pitos que silencio en las gradas de nuestro Palacio. Que pase esto rápido, dos partidos que deberían ser victorias esta semana. La primera en euroliga contra un equipo que ha empezado muy bien la temporada y ya nos ganó el año pasado aquí, Zalgiris. Y visita a Granada que debería ser innegociable pero ya no nos fiamos. Después un partido difícil contra el hasta ahora líder de la competición continental antes de parón por las ventanas clasificatorias para el mundial.

Si bien el elegido para suplir a Bruno Fernando ha sido Alex Len (ya veremos lo que puede ayudarnos, debutó testimonialmente ayer en el palacio azulgranate). El nombre de la temporada hasta ahora es Trey Lyles. Ya tenía buena pinta el fichaje, pero como también hemos salido escaldados en otras tantas ocasiones , estamos como buenamente se suele decir: curados de espanto. Y sin querer lanzar las campanas al vuelo, hemos sido cautos y esperar de lo bien que se podía adaptar el bueno de Trey tanto al club como al equipo. Ciertamente el fichaje de campanillas está resultando acertadísimo y si bien ya viene cuajando buenas actuaciones, la de ayer en la cancha de nuestro eterno rival ya nos hace quererle muchísimo más. En lo que se refiere a nuestro bagaje de los partidos que tenemos pendientes después de nuestro último programa pues... derrota de nuevo fuera de casa en Munich lo cual nos dejaba al borde de una crisis de resultados y juego... aunque sabiendo que solo a medias viendo de lo que era capaz el Madrid en fases pero luego en otras no, pero claro, los partidos duran 40 minutos y habría que decir que de juego también. Si hubiéramos perdido en casa contra Fenerbahce habríamos entrado de lleno en esa crisis, pero salió el mejor partido de la temporada y luego en ACB primera victoria fuera de casa de la misma y ayer otra más en la cancha del Barcelona. Buen empujón en el aspecto positivo para nuestra confianza y en el negativo para ellos que les dimos nosotros. A seguir así y despejando dudas que se viene otra semana de aúpa en Euroliga: Valencia en su cancha y Panathinaikos en la nuestra. En ACB mañana en Badalona ojalá saquemos el partido contra un equipo que ha empezado muy bien la temporada y el próximo domingo en casa Bilbao debería ser una victoria segura.

It was a vintage Thursday night across Europe, in which big-league clubs dropped like flies, and underdogs had some exceptional performances. We start out examining the big upsets, including PAOK's instant-classic thriller in Lille, Go Ahead Eagles' historic win over Villa, and AEK Larnaca pulling a shock in South London. We also debate the day's many controversial VAR moments, which favored Fenerbahce over Stuttgart and propelled Rayo Vallecano to the latest of equalizers at Häcken. Why is VAR usage so inconsistent, unpredictable, and frankly, incompetent, in these competitions — more so than any domestic league? Then in a whip-around segment, we celebrate Lincoln Red Imp's first ever major European tournament win, throw the usual shade at hapless Nice, and lament that Scottish sides occupy the bottom spot of both tables.
