In this episode, you'll learn how Lubiana found her voice through an unusual encounter with the Kora. Kora is called the African guitar but is much more than a traditional musical instrument. It ties the world of music to spirituality and oral tradition. Traditionally played by male, Lubiana is one of the rare women who has emerged as an uprising singer-songwriter, kora player and is on her way to become a griot herself. You will learn about the shocking numbers of gender disparity when it comes to music in sounds and hears from Terri Winston, executive director of Women's Audio Mission.

Terri Winston is the executive director of Women’s Audio Mission, a San Francisco-based nonprofit organization that uses music and media to attract over 2,000 underserved women and girls every year to STEM and creative technology studies. WAM’s award-winning curriculum weaves art and music with science, technology and computer programming and works to close the critical gender gap in creative technology careers. During Terri’s long career as a recording artist, songwriter, composer, recording engineer, and producer she noticed that less than 5% of the people creating music and media were woman. That led her to create WAM in 2003 while she was a tenured Professor and Director of the Sound Recording Arts Program at City College of San Francisco. Along the way Terri has composed and produced theme music for KRON-TV's "First Cut" series, Banana Republic and films that have shown on BRAVO's Independent Film Channel, French Television's Cine Cinemas and major festivals all over the world. She has received an ASCAP songwriting award, Boston Music Award and Bay Area Music Award, is currently serving on the Recording Academy's (Grammy's) National Task Force on Diversity and Inclusion and The Academy of Country Music's Diversity and Inclusion Task Force. During the interview we spoke about playing in a punk band and working with producer Lenny Kaye, how Women’s Audio Mission came about, women’s lack of exposure to audio, the perception of women in the studio, and much more. On the intro I’ll take a look at the ways streaming numbers are manipulated, and Steinway Piano’s secret underground vault.
Tonight, we have a great panel discussion of amazing Bay Area women in hip-hop including Rocky Rivera, Chhoti Maa, and Versoul (formerly known as Babii Cris). Get this: Less than 5% of the people creating the sounds, music and media in the daily soundtrack of our lives are women and moreover they are not getting too many plays on platforms like soundsloud aswell. There are ways to get more plays and one can find more information by following this link. For 15 years, Women Audio Mission has been working to close the gender gap in creative technology careers. In addition to preparing women and girls to go behind the board of a professional recording studio, the organization also provides studio time, and a recording package so that women musicians can have a professionally recorded album. In March this year, they held their quarterly Local Sirens concert series featuring local women musicians and performers. The performance was preceded by this allstar lineup of Bay Area women in hip hop. Rocky Rivera, Chhoti Maa, and Versoul (formerly known as Babii Cris). They cover integrating their activism and love for their community into their lyrics, surviving as musicians, and being women in a mostly male industry. Moderating the panel is Founder and Executive Director of Women Audio Mission, Terri Winston. Community Calendar In just over a week, Solidarity to Solutions Week of Climate Actions arrives. Episode #117: “Where Are All the Female Producers?” “Why Aren't There More Women Working in Audio?” Why don't more women “step up” in music? These are just some of the questions that continue to baffle the mainstream music industry. Yet, there are (and have been) many talented women working in recording. On this episode, we talk to people working toward broader inclusion and accessibility in recording. Madeleine Campbell is the editor of the Women in Sound zine, which is “dedicated to women, queer, & trans* people in all areas of live & recorded sound.” Madeleine also runs Accessible Recording, a studio in Pittsburgh which offers sliding scale rates in an effort to stay affordable for those with no label support, free learning opportunities, and free childcare. Terri Winston, executive director of Women's Audio Mission, also joins us to share the organization's goals and accomplishments as the only professional recording studio in the world built and run by women. We also hear from Andrew Jones, a recording engineer in Denton, TX, whose studio caters to underrepresented emerging artists. Rock Talk with Sommer: Conversations with Women in the Music Industry
Imagine a place where females and other underserved individuals dreaming of a career in the music industry had a place where they could get the training, support and resources to do so. The fact is less than 5% of the people working in the field of music production & recording arts are women. Songwriter, composer, recording engineer, and producer Terri Winston founded the Women’s Audio Mission in 2003. And since they’ve been working to change those numbers. Through WAM 400+ women have been placed in paid positions with Google, Pixar, SFJazz, NPR, Comedy Central, Animal Planet, Electronic Arts, and others. 2,000+ classes have been given to 8,000 women/girls over 14 years. The Women’s Audio Mission’s has the only professional recording studio in the world built and run entirely by women. Women’s Audio Mission has produced and recorded albums for over 150 artists from 21 countries, including Grammy award winners.
