Happy International Women's Month, belated International Women's Day, and Women's History Month. We're excited to share the live recording of our session at The NAMM Show 2024! The ReVoicing team of Natalie, Stephanie, and Julia gets into how cultivating intentional community is the key to a sustainable career for women in music, some helpful tools to think intentionally about getting started, and our reflections about how music NEEDS you, exactly as you are.  During the live event, we hosted a 20 minute community building exercise, so we are challenging each of you to reflect on the community you want to be a part of and to seek it out for yourself!  Special thanks to Women of NAMM, Women in Music, The Women's International Music Network (The WiMN), Gritty in Pink, SheQ Audio, Women's Audio Mission, and Girls Make Beats for taking the time to come together and inspire more community building within the industry.  Donate to the Women of NAMM Fund.  –  Learn more about Women at NAMM at www.namm.org/women-of-namm..  Follow Us Here: Facebook Instagram  LinkedIn  –  Sponsored by AKG: www.akg.com This episode was co-produced and edited by Natalie Morrison, Stephanie Lamond, and Julia Olsen.   Music by: Lucky Lamond

We begin Part 2 with my asking the question everyone wants to know: Is "Meredith Edgar" her real name or a stage name? You'll have to listen in to find out.   Then she shares the various day jobs she's had over the years, some worse than others. She worked a little retail, then got an esthetician's license and worked in dermatology. Meredith says that she's always wanted to help people.   That work eventually drove her to go back to college, which she did at St. Edward's in Austin, where she earned a degree in psychology. While in Austin, she worked at the SIMS Foundation, a mental-health non-profit for musicians in the area. An internship there led to a job, one she describes as one of her favorites to this day.   Then, thanks to my propensity for chatter, we dive into a sidebar on Austin and whether folks in that city do a good job of taking care of their own. Meredith is quick and correct in pointing out that, like here, Austin artists and musicians often get priced out of a city that's always becoming more expensive to live in.   After that, Meredith tells us about her time in Italy for a stint, which inevitably leads to another sidebar, this time on Spain and Italy. And finally, after all that set up, I get to share my story of discovering Meredith.   Meredith was married, but then divorced. She had lived in Venice, but after Italy, she moved back to The City she was born in ... just before COVID hit. She managed to find a job and an apartment just in time, though.   When the pandemic did take hold, she started doing live streams on Instagram. She had really wanted to give her music a push, and like many musicians, took to streaming as a way to continue connecting with audiences. Once it was safe, Meredith started playing masked shows in outdoor places, something she says "really saved" her, both socially and creatively. She had been living alone and feeling that isolation that the pandemic exacerbated for so many of us.   Now she says that she's got herself to a good point. She's summoning patience and has managed to find community here. Meredith recorded an album at Women's Audio Mission in 2021 and hopes to record again this year. She says that among writing, rehearsing, recording, and playing out, the latter is her favorite.   We end Part 2 with Meredith's response to our theme this season: "We're all in it."   The songs you hear after our conversation ends are: "Louisiana Rain" and "Blue."   Catch Meredith at any of the following upcoming shows: Jan. 11 at Rite Spot (I'll be there!) Jan. 21 at Spec's Jan. 25 again at Rite Spot   We recorded this episode at Royal Cuckoo Organ Lounge in the Mission in November 2023.   Photography by Jeff Hunt

Kicking off his mixing journey nearly five months ago, Karim Helal saw many rejuvenations to his sonic direction, commencing things with melodic and tech-house (like nearly everyone who starts) but then shifted his efforts into digging for industrial techno tunes. Later on, he found a certain fondness for the broken percussion of drum n' bass. For this Select episode, Helal cooks up a special DnB, heavy bass, and jungle for an hourly mix, which features Ozoh, the legendary Ed Rush, Audiomission, Cramz, and more.

Over the course of this show we have spent a lot of time talking about both the need to diversify and the idea that doing non-music things is often just a part of the journey. Our guest today, Fabiana Claure, explains that what we have been missing is that all the pieces you do need to be put together as one you.Women's Audio Mission is a San Francisco/Oakland-based nonprofit organization and the only professional recording studio in the world built and run by women/GNC individuals. It attracts over 2,000 underserved women/girls/GNC individuals every year to STEM and creative technology studies that inspire them to amplify their voices and become the innovators of tomorrow. WAM's award-winning curriculum weaves art and music with science, technology and computer programming and works to close the critical gender gap in creative technology careers. Learn more at womensaudiomission.orgIn the second half of our interview with Fabiana we discuss the steps she has created to help musicians offer their best to the world. The idea is that you have to package all the pieces of you that you might often keep separated, allowing your business to showcase ALL of your talents that make you, you will draw your best audience to you. Please enjoy the second half of our interview with Music business coach Fabiana Claure.Action:Consider what talents and experiences from your life are not showing up in your music business and spend some time brainstorming how that could change.Ways to connect with us:Musicians Tip Jar.comMusicians Tip Jar@gmailIntro & Outro Music Donated by: The Magi https://www.themagimusic.com Intro Read by: David “DJ” Lee of The Magi https://soundcloud.com/rockababyrock Pictures by: Kit Chalberg https://kitchalberg.com/

LISA's BIO Lisa is a musician based in Austin, Texas. After recording her own album in 2010, she became interested in audio engineering and took courses from Women's Audio Mission in San Francisco. Upon returning to Texas, Lisa started dreaming about creating a community of women+ in audio in Austin. In February of 2020, Omni Sound Project was launched with over 20 local, in-person events scheduled for the year. Just a couple of months later, all of our classes were shifted to an online format to respond to the pandemic. Overnight, Omni became a global community of musicians, producers, and engineers who identify as female, GNC, trans, and allies. Lisa believes that the frequency and quality of Omni's classes taught by welcoming, inclusive teachers makes the organization a genuine community that is steadily increasing gender representation in the audio industry. Cristina Ibarra from Women's Audio Mission is going to share with us how they are getting women and girls more involved in the areas of creative technology, audio and STEM. Right now, less than 5% of the audio and music we have is created by women. WAM has been able to help over 2000 women per year to be involved in the Creative Audio Arts. They were able to help more women during this pandemic through doing virtual conferences. Go to womensaudiomission.org and check how you can get involved.   Women's Audio Mission (WAM) is based in San Francisco and Oakland, CA. They are a non-profit organization that use music and media to attract over 4000 women, gender non-conforming folks and girls for music, audio and STEM studies. They have the only built-in studio entirely built and run by women and gender non-conforming folks. Audio is a critically underrepresented field and their mission is to amplify voices of women and gender non-conforming folks in this field. My friend, Fett, has been sharing to me how women have been producing but their work is not being highlighted and how girls are not realizing that this is a field they can go into. Through WAM, when they see themselves represented in the studio, in the instructors, on stage and behind the board, they begin to realize that this is a road they can choose to take.  The 8th WAMCon is coming up and this has been an iconic way for Women's Audio Mission to take their mission and community to tap into existing communities. There is such a need for this and this is why they are figuring out how to push it further and reach out to more people in 10 countries using virtual.   They offer a membership program for $40/year for professionals and $30/year for students. With that, you get access to courses, access to the job board and get to work with our great community.  The gap between equity inclusion and the challenge is now moving from conversations about that gap to actual change. WAM's mission is being part of the conversation. We have to keep going to push that change and make a difference. If you'd like to know more about membership or events of WAM, find us at womensaudiomission.org. They are also on social media such as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. WAMCon is coming on October 23rd and 24th and it's a fantastic way to drop in and get some fantastic workshops. They'll also have 3 top engineers talk about their journeys followed by a whole day of workshops. Link mentioned in this episode: womensaudiomission.org (http://www.womensaudiomission.org)

THIS IS NOT A VERY GOOD EPISODE OF THE WALKING PODCAST.  A few weeks ago, for reasons I explain in this episode's ad break, I decided to try something new: instead of a traditional sponsor for each episode, I'd start asking people I admire to tell me about a non-profit or philanthropic organization that they believe in, and then I'd tell you, the listeners, about it. (I would call this innovation “Philanth-ertizing.”) One of the first people to reply was Hrishikesh Hirway, who told me about a great organization (see below.) I wrote back: “Perfecto! I'll do this next week!" Well, I did not do Hrishi's Philanthertizement next week. Or the week after, or the week after that. In fact, ever since, it's like I've been cursed. I went to record the next episode of the show and my recorder broke. I recorded an episode using a backup recorder, but then couldn't get the file off it. Then I got sort of busy and it slipped my mind that I make a podcast. (Probably not part of the curse, but who's to say; could be a mind-curse.) Three weeks went by—no new episodes. Finally, one night after dinner, I laced up my shoes, switched on my new rig, and walked out the door to get this episode done. It did not go smoothly. It was dark. I had a headlamp on. But just as I got to the end of the driveway, the headlamp started flickering—then zonked out. So I turned tail, back to the house, to fetch another headlamp—and just as I did, my phone started chiming with texts from a friend. (I'd forgotten to silence it.) Inside, I tried to hug my daughter and knocked her over. Then, back outside and finally walking, I got dive-bombed by a bat. Then another bat. Then, I discovered a tremendous tree had fallen over the trail! Then, as I stood in front of the tree, talking into my recorder, trying to explain “Philanth-ertizing” so I could get to Hrishi's ad, I got dive-bombed by a couple more bats. Then finally, after some more walking, when I was almost home, an owl flew right in front of me, very low, like a swift white phantom, and scared me shirtless. Anyway, here it is: a cursed and atypical episode of the WALKING podcast.  This week's walk is sponsored by Hrishikesh Hirway on behalf of Women's Audio Mission, an organization that brings the art and science of audio engineering to women and gender non-conforming people. Please consider supporting the work they do. Thank you, Hrishi, for letting us know about them.

Terri Winston is the executive director of Women’s Audio Mission, a San Francisco-based nonprofit organization that uses music and media to attract over 2,000 underserved women and girls every year to STEM and creative technology studies. WAM’s award-winning curriculum weaves art and music with science, technology and computer programming and works to close the critical gender gap in creative technology careers. During Terri’s long career as a recording artist, songwriter, composer, recording engineer, and producer she noticed that less than 5% of the people creating music and media were woman. That led her to create WAM in 2003 while she was a tenured Professor and Director of the Sound Recording Arts Program at City College of San Francisco. Along the way Terri has composed and produced theme music for KRON-TV's "First Cut" series, Banana Republic and films that have shown on BRAVO's Independent Film Channel, French Television's Cine Cinemas and major festivals all over the world. She has received an ASCAP songwriting award, Boston Music Award and Bay Area Music Award, is currently serving on the Recording Academy's (Grammy's) National Task Force on Diversity and Inclusion and The Academy of Country Music's Diversity and Inclusion Task Force. During the interview we spoke about playing in a punk band and working with producer Lenny Kaye, how Women’s Audio Mission came about, women’s lack of exposure to audio, the perception of women in the studio, and much more. On the intro I’ll take a look at the ways streaming numbers are manipulated, and Steinway Piano’s secret underground vault.

This is the first Yay Show episode I created using the Anchor.fm app (so frigging easy and fun), right after I put two existing recent episodes up here live. Sailing this ship even if it's a little on fire. Flying the plane as I build it. Laughing out loud more than once. And just trying stuff because it stokes my yay. I also talked about GG Torres, the Joe Goode venue manager, who suggested Anchor.fm to me this very day. So much yay to GG. Here's where you can find out about Women's Audio Mission. Better yet, work with them! And I bought the aforementioned baguette at Tartine Manufactury where I ran into Oliver (for today's hold hands with strangers moment, see episode 116 and 117 for more on that concept), late of Pizzetta 211 and currently of Pearl 1601 not The Pearl as I said on the episode (which is a cool event venue in SF which turns into School Night during the week, which I may just go to tonight). If you're in New Orleans, hit up Paladar 511. Paladar, Pizzetta and Pearl are Jack Murphy's restaurants and School Night is by the esteemed Traci Des Jardins, just saying. NamasYay! Episode #117: “Where Are All the Female Producers?” “Why Aren't There More Women Working in Audio?” Why don't more women “step up” in music? These are just some of the questions that continue to baffle the mainstream music industry. Yet, there are (and have been) many talented women working in recording. On this episode, we talk to people working toward broader inclusion and accessibility in recording. Madeleine Campbell is the editor of the Women in Sound zine, which is “dedicated to women, queer, & trans* people in all areas of live & recorded sound.” Madeleine also runs Accessible Recording, a studio in Pittsburgh which offers sliding scale rates in an effort to stay affordable for those with no label support, free learning opportunities, and free childcare. Terri Winston, executive director of Women's Audio Mission, also joins us to share the organization's goals and accomplishments as the only professional recording studio in the world built and run by women. We also hear from Andrew Jones, a recording engineer in Denton, TX, whose studio caters to underrepresented emerging artists.
