Guest and HostGuest: Seth Cluett, Director of Columbia University's Computer Music Center | On LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/seth-cluett-7631065/ | Columbia University Computer Music Center Bio: https://cmc.music.columbia.edu/bios/seth-cluettHost: Sean Martin, Co-Founder at ITSPmagazine and Host of Redefining CyberSecurity Podcast & Music Evolves Podcast | Website: https://www.seanmartin.com/Show NotesMusic and technology have always shaped each other, and few places embody that relationship as deeply as the Computer Music Center (CMC) at Columbia University. In this episode of Music Evolves, Sean Martin sits down with Seth Cluett, Director of the Computer Music Center and Assistant Director of the Sound Art MFA program at Columbia, to explore the center's rich history, its role in advancing music technology, and how it continues to shape the future of sound. The Legacy and Mission of the Computer Music CenterThe CMC is housed in the same 6,000-square-foot space as the original Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center, which dates back to 1951 and is one of the world's oldest university-based electronic music research facilities. This was the birthplace of early electronic music, where pioneers learned to use cutting-edge technology to create new sounds. Many of those musicians went on to establish their own studios around the world, from Egypt to Japan. The center has played a role in major milestones in music history, including the work of Wendy Carlos, a former student known for Switched-On Bach, the score for Tron, and The Shining. The first piece of electronic music to win a Pulitzer Prize was also composed here. Today, under Cluett's leadership, the focus remains on creativity-driven technological innovation—allowing composers and artists to explore technology freely and push the boundaries of what's possible in sound and music. One of the center's guiding principles is accessibility. Cluett emphasizes the importance of lowering barriers to entry for students who may not have had prior access to music technology. The goal is to make sure that anyone, regardless of background, can walk into the studio and begin working with 80% of its capabilities within the first 20 minutes.Exploring the Labs and StudiosThe episode also includes a tour of the labs and studios, showcasing some of the center's groundbreaking equipment. One highlight is the RCA Mark II Synthesizer, the world's first programmable music synthesizer. Built in the late 1950s, this massive machine—seven feet tall and weighing over a ton—was instrumental in shaping the sound of early electronic music. The system worked by punching holes into paper to control sound generation, similar to a player piano. While no longer in use, the CMC has collaborated with iZotope to model some of its effects digitally. The tour also features Columbia's electronic music studio, which houses synthesizers from Buchla, Serge, and Moog—the latter being developed by Bob Moog, who was once an undergraduate at Columbia. The center's modern design emphasizes a seamless workflow between analog and digital technologies, allowing students to quickly create, process, and experiment with sound.Another key space is the immersive media and spatial audio research facility, which features a 12.1-channel loudspeaker sphere for ambisonic sound, along with a 32-capsule microphone that captures highly detailed audio environments. This technology is not only shaping music but also fields like virtual reality, data sonification, and interactive media. The Future of Music TechnologyLooking ahead, Cluett highlights the increasing interplay between AI, machine learning, and music composition. While some companies promote AI-generated melodies, he believes that truly expressive, human-driven composition remains essential. The role of technology, he argues, is not to replace human creativity but to enable new forms of expression. The CMC is at the forefront of this shift, experimenting with real-time audio processing, interactive performance systems, and embedded sensors that enhance live music experiences. As music and technology continue to merge, Columbia's Computer Music Center remains a key player in shaping the future of sound. Whether through pioneering hardware, software innovation, or fostering the next generation of creative minds, the center proves that music technology is not just about engineering—it's about expression, accessibility, and the pursuit of artistic joy.

We return from our holiday break with Tyler Gilmore, who you may know as BlankFor.ms! Tyler is most known as an electronic artist, using tape loops, pedals, synths, and other textural elements to create evocative slow-moving songs. It may surprise the listener, then, that his object is the trumpet! It's the instrument that started it all for him, and we all learn about his journey with it, then away from it, and perhaps back to it? Only time will tell. In the meantime, we talk about the bodily experience of instruments, some different things our listeners bought over the holidays, Andy's rabbithole of servicemen strats, and a lot of other things along the way. Today we're joined by Sean Mackowski of Tallon Electric. Before the episode, we thought his object was going to be an amp, but as we get into it, we realize it's all about The Noise, his new pedal collaboration with the band Alpha Wolf. We talk about pedal usage in modern medal and heavy music in general, and various approaches to gain, octaves, and momentary bursts of sound. This one's inspired by the new wave of players using pedals as instrumental elements of the heaviest riffs around. Also, Andy and I are taken aback when we find out what band Sean used to be in. That's right, this week it's just your hosts with the mosts talkin ghosts. Just kidding, this episode's pretty low on tricks and treats and frights and whatnot, but we did get some voicemails about spooky gear and we go off on some tangents from there. We're pretty confident this is the only podcast in the world that links discussion of what makes for a scary sound with the specifics of the treadle action on a Danelectro Shift Daddy, so if that's up your alley, boy have you landed in the right place. We also talk about dreams and other inevitabilities. Today we're joined by Chris Benson of Benson Amps. We're catching up with him after a busy year of releases and Benson Fest, and talking with him about the Bogen Challenger PA that became the first Monarch. This one's a casual conversation, where we take roughly an hour before we get to the object, distracted along the way by discussion of how we interact with the internet, breaking assumptions about the sound of any given component, taking time to play the devices we've created, hot soldering, and getting some absolute gems of wisdom from Chris. It's a great time with our favorite amp builder, now dive on in!Check out Benson Amps: https://www.bensonamps.com/Buy yourself some OBNE: http://www.oldbloodnoise.comJoin the conversation in Discord: https://discord.com/invite/PhpA5MbN5uFollow us all on the socials: @bensonamps, @molterband, @oldbloodnoise, @andyothling, @danfromdsfLeave us a voicemail at 505-633-4647!

In today's episode of Category Visionaries, we speak with Finnur Pind, Co-Founder and CEO of Treble, a next generation simulation technology platform that's raised $10 Million in funding about how a new generation of sound-simulation technology is set to help build a better sounding world. Treble's Acoustic Simulation Software generates interactive, real-time, immersive auralizations of acoustic modeling projects with the click of a button, making it easy to compare design iterations and make more informed decisions to make the most of every sound. We also talk about Finnur's background of more than 15 years 'obsessing' about sound, the potential customers looking to design more acoustically refined spaces, limitations in the toolkits available to designers, and why demo-first marketing helped to scale where hands-on engagement turned out to be a hurdle. Topics Discussed: Finnur's long-standing obsession with sound, first as a musician and then as an engineer before moving into academia The emerging focus on creating a ‘sound-comfortable environment' for everything from classrooms to concert spaces Personal experiences with the limitations of acoustic-design technology that prompted Finnur to found Treble Sparking customer interest through content on LinkedIn and other platforms, driving up inbound sales Why a hands-on customer engagement process was eventually replaced with a demo-first model to enable better business scaling Favorite book: The Lean Startup: How Today's Entrepreneurs Use Continuous Innovation to Create Radically Successful Zero to One: Notes on Startups, or How to Build the Future

Jabra announced new AI-powered features for its PanaCast 50 and PanaCast 50 Room System at InfoComm 2023 “There are nine processors onboard the PanaCast 50,” says Jabra's Chief Video Evangelist, Josh Blalock. “It allows us to iterate on that product over time.” That computing power has been driving a wave of announcements of onboard features that the PanaCast 50 can deliver, bringing together technologies that a client would have had to purchase separately. An intelligent Meeting Space feature, which people may understand as room boundary, works to include people who are in the meeting while excluding people who might be nearby but are not in the meeting. Intelligent speaker, a Microsoft connected technology, that identifies people, by name in meeting transcripts. Facial recognition, using AI, which drives notes and other information coming out of a meeting. And improved meeting equity with three video streams: the first stream is the current speaker, the second stream is for the previous speaker, and the third stream is the full panoramic room view of the meeting room or space. In this podcast, Blalock lays out Jabra's broad vision behind the parade of announcements so far this year. “Workers need devices that are not just built for being remote, but are built to be on the go,” says Blalock, noting that many of this year's devices have specialized, small footprint and light, carrying cases, designed for users to be able to tuck a device into a case going in to a car or a subway, and then easily plug and play, from wherever they are. The quality gap remains for laptops, phones, and other devices, while the need to provide high quality and consistent meetings and sessions remains. “You want to be your best self wherever you are, and that's what these devices do.” Visit www.jabra.com · Cloud Communications Alliance and Jabra Event in Copenhagen: A Day of Thought Leadership · Content Guru Extends storm's Sentiment Analysis Capabilities Through Jabra Engage AI Integration · Jabra PanaCast video solution first to market with all-new Microsoft device ecosystem platform · Jabra expands the Evolve2 range with the most portable and comfortable headsets built for ultra-flexible hybrid working · Jabra Elite 4 – feature-packed entry earbuds for both work and play · Jabra launches PanaCast 50 Video Bar System to facilitate next-level hybrid meeting experiences · Jabra showcases true wireless expertise for consumers, enterprise and medical at CES 2023
Mobile Audio Technology & Podcasting On the Go: A Conversation with Fernando Eid Pires - Part 2“Eyesight's probably the first sense most prioritized by the brain but right behind it is hearing and it can influence your state of mind, your emotions. You know, if you put the right music to work, you work better. If you put the right music to work out, you work out better, you know. If you want to have a romantic date, there's a very different kind of music you'll want to play there. Well, needless to say, it's amazing, and if you're cognizant of what you're choosing to hear it, will have an effect on you." -- Fernando Eid Pires This episode's the second half of my interview with entrepreneur, audio engineer, and Audiosigma founder, Fernando Eid Pires as we discuss his inspirational book Jumpstart, the ins and outs of developing the PodMobile, and his perspective as a newcomer to the voice industry. As always, if you have questions for my guest, you're welcome to reach out through the links in the show notes. If you have questions for me, visit www.audiobrandingpodcast.com where you'll find a lot of ways to get in touch. Plus, subscribing to the newsletter will let you know when the new podcasts are available. Both those things really help – and I'd love to feature your review on future podcasts. You can leave one either in written or in voice format from the podcast's main page. I would so appreciate that. The Extra MileThe second half of our conversation starts with a closer look at the creative and engineering process behind PodMobile and how Fernando's using feedback from his contacts within the voice and audio industry to continue developing and expanding the mobile tool into an audio Swiss army knife for every occasion. “The idea of the PodMobile,” he explains, “is that it solves your problems. So if you have to go the extra mile... then I think my equipment is not doing the job that it could do.” Getting Your Life TogetherHe also tells us about his book Jumpstart and the lessons that it drew from his early life and struggles to help others follow their own path to success. "It's about getting your life together," he says. "It's very much self-help." Fernando acknowledges that this can be easier said than done and that he had to overcome his own struggle with shyness to be able to offer advice to others. "It's very difficult for somebody to just take days to just lay out that plan," he tells us. "It's not easy. It's easy to tell someone to do it, but it's not easy to overcome the resistance to do it yourself." The Right MusicOur discussion concludes with the role sound plays in our well-being, and how the power of music, from jazz playlists to classic rock to lofi hip hop, helped him persevere through some of his most difficult struggles. “If you put the right music to work,” Fernando observes, “you work better. If you put the right music to work out, you work out better. You know, if you want to have a romantic date, there's a very different kind of music you'll want to play there. Well, needless to say, it's amazing and if you're cognizant of what you're choosing to hear, it will have an effect on you.” Episode SummaryThe process of expanding PodMobile's versatility and audio compatibilityHow Jumpstart aims to help guide other entrepreneurs in their journeyThe beloved grandfather whose life has been an inspiration to...
Mobile Audio Technology & Podcasting On the Go - Putting Audio to Work“I get a bigger satisfaction working with things that has a constraint in terms of budget, you know, cannot be overly expensive. You have to deliver a ton of value for the money. I think this is so cool to work with that and like kind of, you know, work a miracle out of the parts that you have. Then, you know, go super fancy and, oh, this is the best thing ever. And you should pay, you know, ten grand for this. And then you can basically use anything. I think this is sort of like the movies that when, you know, the budget is short, sometimes the movie is a lot better and then the sequel, when you have a lot more budget, much more money to make the movie, maybe it's not as good.” -- Fernando Eid Pires This episode's guest is a relentless entrepreneur and a highly skilled electrical engineer with five patents and an inspiring history to share. His name is Fernando Pires and I first came across him and his expertise when a fellow VO reviewed a wonderful audio interface he'd come up with. It's currently called the PodMobile, but he may change that name in the future. It's a useful new tool to help voice actors and podcasters alike, get the best sound for their recordings: I've tried it myself and can tell you it is an excellent piece of equipment. We talk more about where his love of sound started, his electrical engineering, his current interest in sound, and where he thinks it'll end up. So stay tuned! As always, if you have questions for my guest, you're welcome to reach out through the links in the show notes. Both those things really help – and I'd love to feature your review on future podcasts. You can leave one either in written or in voice format from the podcast's main page. I would so appreciate that. Between Toys and SoundThe interview starts with Fernando's memories of listening to music in the car as a child, and we talk about how audio became a passion for him early on. “I was between toys and sound equipment,” Fernando explains. “But when I was twelve years old, it became pretty much all about audio.” He tells us about growing up in São Paulo and how its music scene helped cultivate his love of music. “If you want to listen to jazz on a Tuesday night,” he says, “you got it. If you want to listen to blues, you got it. Bossa nova, you got it. Samba, you got it. Anything. So rock and roll? Plenty.” An Expensive LessonFernando talks about his first patent, a beautifully designed and ingenious custom audio mixer that turned out to be hopelessly impractical. “It was a wooden cabinet painted silver,” he says, “like automotive paint. It was like the iPod of professional audio. It worked great. It was a pleasure to use, but to build it? Oh my goodness.” We talk about the hours of work he poured into each one of the hundred devices he eventually sold, and the lessons he learned from that project. “Honestly, that patent resulted in nothing,” he admits. “It was just extremely expensive. It wasn't a good idea.” Entrepreneurs from BirthThe conversation turns to his success with the PodMobile and the entrepreneurial spirit that carried him through those early setbacks, a spirit he thinks many people possess without realizing it. “I believe that most...

Responding to the crisis of medical burnout, Punit Singh Soni, a former product manager at Google, launched the company Suki with a specific goal: leverage the burgeoning field of voice technology to lessen the growing administrative burden on clinicians. Soni says enterprise contexts, and healthcare in particular, are well-suited for the next generation of assistive voice-activated software. “Whatever you're going to do in medicine is going to be interwoven with technology in the near future,” he tells host Shiv Gaglani. But as the rickety state of so much current healthcare administrative technology suggests, the prevailing cultures in the tech and medical worlds do not easily mix. Rather than trying to reshape how doctors do their job, Soni seeks to meet doctors where they already are, seamlessly integrating a voice system into the fabric of their work so they can spend more time caring for patients. Tune in to hear about why “the biggest technology company ever built is going to be in healthcare,” and how a user-centric mindset can help you not just build a company, but craft a career.

In this episode, we talk with Jean-Luc Sinclair, who teaches various subjects in the audio technology field at both Berklee College of Music and NYU. In our conversation, we extensively cover Jean-Luc's story - how he discovered computers and music technology as a child, and how his experiences shaped him through his upbringing and career. We talk about the fundamentals of interactive audio - what makes it different than ‘linear' audio, and what kinds of skills, training, and mindset one has to have to work in the interactive audio world. We also cover some of Jean-Luc's teaching philosophy, and his philosophy on technology in general.Jean-Luc on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jlsinclair808/Principles of Game Audio and Sound Design (Book): https://www.amazon.com/Principles-Game-Audio-Sound-Design/dp/1138738972The Switch on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/switch_podcastThe Switch on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFi1rtdbD1ADiLfcI962ZKQ52 Living Ideas: https://52livingideas.com/Join our next session live on Zoom, Mondays at 9pm EST - the call link is available (for free) on our Patreon page!
