After sharing these powerful clips, I'll provide my commentary, linking the threads together and connecting them with past guests. At the close of the episode, the tables are turned as Alan Mulally, the former CEO of Ford Motor Company and my collaborator on my latest book, asks me a question or two. I hope you enjoy this extended episode as much as I did putting it together. In this very special episode of the Therapist Rising podcast, I sit down with my husband and business partner, Rob, for a candid conversation about what it's really like working together in our family business. We dive into the nitty gritty details of our journey, sharing the ups, downs, and everything in between.Rob and I reminisce about how our love story began over 20 years ago on the touch football field, and how our relationship evolved from friendship to marriage and now to becoming business partners at Therapist Rising. I openly share about the immense privilege and support I had from Rob when I decided to leave my one-on-one therapy practice to start my online coaching business. We pull back the curtain on what Rob's role looks like at Therapist Rising, and how he taught himself everything from building websites to editing podcasts to support the business in its early days. Rob also shares how he's stepped into more of a coaching role, teaching our Collective members about strategy, project management and implementation. While there are so many benefits to working with your spouse, Rob and I also vulnerably share some of the challenges we face, like struggling to "turn off" the business talk, managing our relationship dynamics in a professional setting, and juggling business demands with family time, especially during busy launch periods."We also reflect on some of the lessons we've learned along the way, and what we would do differently if we could turn back time, like Rob getting involved in the business earlier, me seeking out more mentorship on running a successful business, and both of us being more intentional about aligning our goals with our values from the beginning. Finally, we leave you with our best advice for couples who are considering going into business together (hint: go for it, but be realistic and put the right foundations in place first!), as well as an exciting update on how this episode has inspired us to start incorporating more support for the business partners and key players of our Collective members.Whether you're already in business with your significant other, or just exploring the possibility, this episode is a must-listen. Tune in now to get an inside look at the real life ups and downs of running a purpose-driven business with your life partner by your side.
In the ‘80s, Sally Helgesen worked in corporate communications, writing speeches for leaders at reputable companies. Although she thought these companies were wonderful, she felt frustrated that they didn't understand what women could offer as leaders. Host Ben Rice travels to Sacramento, CA, to sit down with Sacramento Area Brewers Guild president Chris Keeton (head brewer at Alaro) and vice president David Weiss (brewer at Blue Note) to talk about Sacramento Beer Week 2024 (happening April 26-May 5). We discuss this year's iteration of the Rising Together guild collaboration (among other things). In past years, it's been an IPA using certain ingredients, but this year, in honor of the Sacramento Brewers Showcase happening on Saturday May 4 (at Heart Health Park), they're honoring May the 4th Be With You, by letting breweries choose the Light Side or Dark Side, allowing for a wide range of beer styles and flavors, and reminding consumers of the vast array of beers available in the beer scene and what differentiates each brewery. Plus! Taprooms and bars are back in business at Sac Beer Week 2024! Internal strife has diminished that in recent years, but those are the sins of the father, not the current administration, who is working hard to recapture the spirit of Sac Beer Week. This episode is not only a celebration of what Beer Week and the beer scene once was, but an exploration of where it's going and how it will handle a more educated and less alcohol-friendly next generation of consumers. We also shout out some people who keep the scene alive and show that, even when day-to-day excitement may be down, there's still a strong supportive and passionate base of brewers, marketers, and drinkers. David Weiss damn near gets emotional on the episode and Chris shows why he was put in charge in the first place. “The best assessment tool is to listen to your people. They talk about “we” when they're talking about the organization - you're on pretty good track to have an inclusive culture. If they talk about “they” you don't have it. Save your money. Don't do an assessment and just listen to how people talk.” Sally Helgesen, cited in Forbes as the world's premier expert on women's leadership, is an internationally best-selling author, speaker and leadership coach. She has been inducted into the Thinkers 50 Hall of Fame, which honors those whose ideas have shaped the field of leadership worldwide. She is ranked number 3 among the world's thought leaders by Global Gurus. Sally's latest book, Rising Together: How We Can Bridge Divides and Create a More Inclusive Workplace, offers practical ways to build more inclusive relationships, teams, and workplaces. Rising Together builds on Sally's remarkable success with How Women Rise, co-authored with legendary executive coach Marshall Goldsmith, which examines the behaviors most likely to get in the way of successful women as they move forward in their careers. Rights have been sold in 23 languages. Other books include The Female Advantage: Women's Ways of Leadership, hailed as the classic in its field and continuously in print since 1990, and The Web of Inclusion: A New Architecture for Building Great Organizations, cited in The Wall Street Journal as one of the best books on leadership of all time and credited with bringing the language of inclusion into business. For over 30 years, Sally has delivered seminars, workshops and keynotes for companies, partnership firms and associations around the world, working in 37 countries. R.O.G. Takeaway Tips: Build relationships with people different than ourselves. Give people the benefit of our good will. Build networks, not grapevines. How are you engaging in inclusive leadership? Are people being seen, heard and valued? Do your team members use “we” or “they”? Establish boundaries. Actively listen. Follow up with people. Actively promote and celebrate others. SHOW NOTES: On this show…we are rising together by navigating life's challenges with perspective and empathy. No matter what age you are I think we can all agree, that life delivers some rough patches, knee-buckling blows, and what may feel like unsurmountable issue after issue. But guess what, just like your miraculous body has incredible self-healing capabilities, so does your resolve. The survival instinct is like a powerful toolbox loaded with things like will, problem-solving, adrenaline, logical thinking..just to name a few. We also have anger, fear, panic-grief, care, pleasure/lust, and play. Interestingly, it is thought that the most powerful instinct is “seeking”. Something that we generally give little thought or credence to. This is the instinct that moves us to explore our environment in order to meet our needs. All this to say, hang in there it may not be as bad as it seems and if it is, you've got skills to tap into to right the situation and get you moving forward. Five hundred years ago, Michel de Montaigne said: "My life has been filled with terrible misfortune; most of which never happened." Before you hitch up your saddle feathers, proclaiming the sky is falling let's take a much-needed pause to figure some things out.
In this episode of Chats and Tatts, host Aaron Della Vedova interviews Co-founders of Sullen Clothing, Ryan Smith and Jeremy Hanna. Streetwear has come a long way since its early days in the 1980s and 1990s, and Sullen is here to ensure tattoo-inspired clothing that blends and highlights everything unique about the art of urban apparel. Originally founded as a collective of driven, talented tattoo artists, Sullen Clothing has its roots in the SoCal beach culture of the early 2000s. Already a well-established tattooer, co-owner Ryan Smith began blending tattoo art with new fashion trends, and from that Sullen's urban streetwear brand was created. Far from simply reusing “cool” graphics or following the trends, Sullen became a trailblazer producing unique, original art that it then transferred to streetwear like premium t-shirts, boxers, hoodies, and hats. Today Sullen is still one of the most popular tattoo apparel brands in the world, offering a wide range of expressive designs and wearable art pieces for tattoo lovers everywhere. Today, our guests share their stories of starting from the ground up and building their brand without relying on venture capitalist money. What habits get in your way at work? Are there any instances in the workplace that may be limiting you? Are you comfortable sharing your achievements and discussing how you specifically generated a result? Would you rather let your accomplishments speak for themselves? This habit of being reluctant to claim your achievements may resonate more with women. However, this episode is for everyone. Not only did these habits resonate with me, but I also became keenly aware of how our organizational structures can make it difficult for women to break them. Today's guest is best-selling author, speaker, and leadership coach Sally Helgesen. Sally was cited by Forbes as the world's premier expert on women's leadership and was inducted into the Thinkers 50 Hall of Fame. Her latest book, Rising Together: How We Can Bridge Divides and Create a More Inclusive Workplace, offers practical ways to build more inclusive relationships, teams, and workplaces. It examines the behaviors most likely to get in the way of successful women as they move forward in their careers. In today's episode, we examine how Sally's early experiences working in corporate America sparked her journey of becoming a women's leadership expert. We dive into the beliefs that can provide a foundation for habits that get in the way of women's efforts to rise. We also discuss her new book, Rising Together, and what we can do to build better work cultures of belonging and inclusion. Let's get some integrity in our spines, bring our attention to this moment, and learn from Sally Helgesen. Key Points: We cannot control what others think; we can only control how we act. It is essential to have honest conversations. Communicate what you're interested in. Being reluctant to talk about your aspirations doesn't serve you. Making a simple request is not always leveraging. It can be a chance to give others an opportunity to feel good about themselves. Set boundaries based on your values, and learn to say no without elaboration. During difficult situations, build awareness of your reaction and find a path where you can move more productively. Sally Helgesen is the world's premier expert on women's leadership and the author of Rising Together. She became the first person to write about inclusion in the workplace in 1995 with her book, The Web of Inclusion. In this episode of Love in Action, Sally and Marcel discuss the nuances of triggers and inclusive behaviors. Quotes:“A trigger is a situation, or person, or a comment that stirs an emotional response in us.” [15:15] Whether it's anger, shock, resentment, or horror, these emotional responses can be triggered by many factors, including race, ethnicity, age, and much more. These triggers lie well outside our circle of control but can become a major concern. Sally Helgesen's goal with her book, Rising Together, is to take a look at the workplace and answer the question: How do we find a positive path forward for ourselves and the co-worker who has triggered us?“Telling ourselves this different story gives us a potential positive path forward.” [20:20] Visibility is one of the big triggers Sally talks about in her book. She explains many situations and reasons why one may become triggered by visibility. The solution: Rewrite the script. Put a positive spin on it (you don't even have to truly believe it) and come through to the colleague who triggered you in a way that validates your idea.“Being professional in a situation, being clear about your intentions, and engaging from your heart is a lot more important than always trying to demonstrate your own authenticity.” [31:35] What are you trying to say?! This is a big trigger that comes from being around diverse groups in the workplace and not being comfortable. Whether it's understanding cultures and religions, learning pronouns, or remembering and pronouncing different names, it's important to make the effort with clear and professional intentions.“It's not fair! We are so triggered by fairness. It really cuts to the bottom of our self esteem and our ability to make a contribution.” [35:20] Trigger number 5 from the book and the final one discussed in this episode is fairness. The reality is that it's not a fair world, and it's not a fair workplace. Sally shares how rewriting the script and opening dialogue in an “unfair” situation to get all the information before reacting.“What can I do to offer this person the benefit of my good will?” [42:12] The steps to bridge the gap to a more inclusive workplace come from generosity, grace, and the benefit of your goodwill. This is the other half of writing those positive scripts, which involves building relationships and positivity across the lines of gender, race, age, or ethnicity.Mentioned in this episode:Sally HelgesenSally Helgesen on LinkedInAll Rise with Sally HelgesenRISING TOGETHER: How We Can Bridge Divides and Create a More Inclusive Workplace Marcel Schwantes

Here's a confession. I think I bought into a lie early in my career. I thought I needed to contort myself into one of the boys to get ahead. I thought if I kept my head down and worked hard, I would be recognized. I thought if I brought up my accomplishments in front of my boss during my annual review, I was being boisterous or not humble. Guess what? These learnings, and many more, were lies that were fed to me and so many other women. We were not taught that self-promotion was a good thing because if we don't market ourselves, who is going to? We were not told to be clear about our intentions with our expectations at work. We were not taught to advocate for ourselves in performance reviews or any other negotiations. We weren't taught these things, but it's better late than never to learn these things. I am honored to have my guest Sally Helgesen, on the show today. Sally is a pioneer and has been named by Forbes as one of the premier experts on women's leadership. It was a pleasure to speak with Sally and to learn from her extensive experience, research, and the eight books that she has written over the last 30+ years. During our conversation, Sally and I talked about:What rising means. What habits prevent women from rising personally and professionally. What rising together means for organizations. What are the patterns inside organizations that trigger us.How women can build and leverage allies. How we can repair organizational divides to build more inclusive workplaces.

How can we create workplace cultures that include all of us, when there's still so much sexism, racism, and systematic fuckery in organizations?
In the digital age, writing has become more collaborative than ever - in part thanks to the plethora of online groups and websites that offer support and resources for authors. From general writing help to finding niche communities, these groups can be a game-changer for writers seeking camaraderie and shared knowledge. In this episode of Fully Booked, New York Times bestselling author Mimi Barbour shares the story of creating a private author group which has helped many writers build their careers. Mimi discusses how her group got started, the impact it has had on her and other members, and the behind-the-scenes efforts that go into running it. From managing social media and writing blogs, to organizing box sets and maintaining a group mailing list, the collaborative efforts of the group have yielded remarkable results. While there may be challenges in running and being part of a private author group, Mimi demonstrates that the rewards are worth the effort. The companionship and support among members can lead to great success and open up new opportunities that may not have been possible individually. We had a great conversation with Argentinean-born author, Valeria Aloe. In her new book “Uncolonized Latinas: Transforming Our Mindsets and Rising Together”, she helps Latinas to embrace our individual and collective greatness, honor our stories and our ancestry; and become more aware of the limiting cultural narratives that have been plaguing us. As a Latina or an ally, learn to thrive in your career and life from a place of self-esteem, as you learn from the stories in her book of Latinas who figured out how to navigate the systems created by bias. With all of the upheaval happening in the world, we could use some uplifting and positive news. To offer a ray of hope, in an otherwise dark time, we turned to Steve Preston, the president and CEO of Goodwill Industries International. For nearly 120 years, Goodwill has been a leading workforce provider, helping people empower themselves with the skills and job support services they need to thrive. Goodwill, among other philanthropic endeavors, helps individuals and communities build brighter futures through the power of work. The organization is usually thought of as the thrift shop. However, Goodwill offers much more. The iconic nonprofit is a major provider of workforce development and skills training. In a wide-ranging interview, Preston shared the organization's mission. In collaboration with employers and partners, Goodwill helps underserved individuals obtain training and upskilling. In this new tech-driven economy, Preston is focused on teaching digital skills, so that people can find a good job and develop long-term careers. As technology is the dominant trend for the foreseeable future, it's important for folks to at least learn the basics to become competitive in this new economy. To future-proof the longevity of your career, you need to accept this reality and take actions to ensure that you acquire the necessary skills and tools to keep up with the fast-moving, online digital world. Goodwill, in partnership with Google and other companies and government officials, will host the Rising Together Action Summit taking place on Monday, May 9th. If you would like to attend the event virtually, please email risingtogether@advoc8.com.

When we embody our power and rise together as women in global sisterhood, we transform the world. Women's circles are an ancient tradition of healing and community. My friend, Lauren Walsh, is the founder of Global Sisterhood, an organization that teaches women how to facilitate the ancient tradition of healing and transformative circles guided by the moon cycle. Women are the healers, mothers, and caretakers of this world, and the rise of patriarchy and oppression of femininity has caused us all great pain. In this episode of The Bad B*tch Entrepreneur podcast, I'm joined by my friend, colleague, and former client Serena Hicks. Serena and I were both new to the coaching industry when we first met, and have had so much fun growing together over the past few years. We traded coaching in the early stages of our respective businesses, and it was in my first group program that Serena sold $25K in 3 days. We're sharing our big audacious initial goals, how fun it's been to grow from $20k a year to multiple 6 figures, and the 3 biggest things we've learned from each other in our friendship. In this episode you'll learn: Why it's possible to have a big $$ year AND do it imperfectly and messy. How healthy competition helped us level up over the years. What Serena's experience in Melanie's first group was like and how it helped her experience a quantum leap in her business ($25K in 3 days!). How differentiating between scarcity and sufficiency helps create more abundance. ...and so much more! The energy that you hold is the energy you attract. If you want to calibrate other women, meet your income goals, or be successful in your endeavors, you need to find alignment, connection, and beauty in your journey. Celebrate every milestone and feel gratitude for everything you have accomplished because perfection, judgement, and lack have no place on your path to freedom. In this episode, I am talking to Melanie Ann Layer, creator of the Alpha Femme, a powerful brand that encourages women to embrace radical self-ownership in all areas of life, but especially in relationships, mindset, and money issues. Today, Melanie shares her incredible energy and insight on how to rise together through collaboration, connection, and celebration. Tune in to listen to Melanie's beautiful journey of walking in gratitude, embracing imperfection, and finding success. ”I know who I was before this work, if I'm unable to love the people who are coming in at any level, at any place, at any moment in their lives, I am lying about who I am and who I was because the whole thing of this is that if I can do it, then we can all do it. That's such a powerful part of my message.”- Melanie Ann Layer What we covered: How to stay in a place of relatability and integrity with your audience How money can be an amplifier for goodness Why celebration is so powerful The importance of beauty over perfection Staying flexible with your celebrations Connect with Melanie: Personal Page: https://www.facebook.com/melanieannlayer.alphafemme Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/alphafemme/ Business Page: https://www.facebook.com/MelanieAnnLayer.AlphaFemmeOfficial/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/alphafemme/ Website: www.alphafemme.com ------------------------ If you loved this episode, screenshot it and share it in your Stories (and tag me @carissajohnsen), or head to Apple Podcasts and leave a review! Around two years ago I had one of the happiest and one of the most unhappy times in my life. After several years of a challenging fertility journey we finally learned we were pregnant, and several weeks later we learned that we had our second miscarriage. Even with my background in positive psychology, even as I coached women to go after their dreams and live a life filled with purpose and happiness, I was struggling mightily. Fortunately, I have a number of tools at my disposal that helped me get through this terrible time, and in today's episode I share some of these tools with you. One of these tools is building and nurturing sisterhood, and the value of women coming together, and so I'm thrilled to announce the second annual Women's Global Happiness Day! WGHD is an effort to combat the women's depression epidemic and empower women worldwide by learning the science of well-being. I share with you lots of information about this life-changing event, and you can learn more about, as well as how to participate (everything is free!), at [www.womensglobalhappinessday.com]! To learn about and register specifically for the online event, you can go to [www.purposegirl.com/happy], or you can also learn about the online event at [www.womensglobalhappinessday.com] as well. It would really mean a lot to me if you would go to Apple Podcasts and leave me a review (hopefully a great one!), leave a 5 star rating, subscribe to this podcast so you never miss an episode, and download the episodes! And please spread the word and help our community grow! Thank you so much spending your time with me! And if you aren't following me already, you can find me on Instagram and Facebook, and click here to receive my newsletter. May you live purposefully, may you love yourself, and may you love life. Bye for now!
