This delicious spirit is a newcomer to the American market. All of these years it has been unique to Japan and its restaurants. Iichiko Shochu is distilled from barley. In 1979 Iichiko was launched. Today it is the number one consumed shochu in Japan. After tasting these exceptional expressions we can fully understand why. We loved learning from Tetsuro about shochu and its origins. www.iichiko.com - Facebook Highlights from our discussion: Bar Convent Brooklyn Tiffanie Barriere Koji Umami Southern Glazer's Wine and Spirits Tales of the Cocktail

When most people think of Japanese spirits, they often think of sake, but it is in fact shochu that is the national spirit of Japan. Outselling sake in Japan for the past decade, shochu is a clean, crisp white spirit that is rich in flavour that has been distilled and drunk in Japan since the 16th century. Iichiko, has been Japan's best-selling shochu producer for the past 30 years or so, which makes sense as the word literally means “it is good”. Although shochu is unique among spirits in that it can be made from a variety of materials including rice, sweet potato or buckwheat, Iichiko made all their shochu from barley, which gives it rich malty notes. To find out more about the spirit and iichiko's variations, we talk to Tetsuro Miyazaki, General Manager of iichiko USA about nature, taste and of course the cocktails you can make with their liquids.

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.10.05.323261v1?rss=1 Authors: Shibata, T., Nagano, K., Ueyama, M., Ninomiya, K., Tetsuro, H., Nagai, Y., Ishikawa, K., Kawai, G., Nakatani, K. Abstract: Synthetic small molecules modulating RNA structure and function have therapeutic potential for RNA diseases. Here we report our discovery that naphthyridine carbamate dimer (NCD) targets disease-causing r(UGGAA)n repeat RNAs in spinocerebellar ataxia type 31 (SCA31). Structural analysis of the NCD-UGGAA/UGGAA complex by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy clarified the mode of binding that recognizes four guanines in UGGAA/UGGAA pentad by hydrogen bonding with four naphthyridine moieties of two NCD molecules. Biological studies show that NCD disrupts naturally occurring RNA foci built on r(UGGAA)n repeat RNA known as nuclear stress bodies (nSBs) by interfering with RNA-protein interactions resulting in the suppression of nSBs-mediated splicing event. Feeding NCD to larvae of the Drosophila model of SCA31 alleviates disease phenotype induced by toxic r(UGGAA)n repeat RNA. These studies demonstrated that small molecules targeting toxic repeat RNAs are a promising chemical tool for studies on repeat expansion diseases. Copy rights belong to original authors.
