Seirou Opera on Kanoko Sakurokoujin historiallinen murhamysteeriromanssi, jossa päähenkilö myy itsensä kurtisaanioppilaaksi Edon punaisten lyhtyjen alue Yoshiwaraan päästäkseen vanhempiensa murhaajan jäljille. Ajankohtaisina aiheina puhumme, miten digimanga-startup Orangen tekoälykäännöshehkutus vaikuttaa olleen aika lailla huijausta sekä siitä, miten shoujomangasta tunnettu Aya Kanno on aloittanut shounensarjan. Akane harmittelee mielessään, ettei taaskaan ole ollut hyvää hetkeä kiittää aikaisemmasta palveluksesta, kun Soosuke on aina mahdoton. - …mutta siitä huolimatta tunteet vain kipinöivät! (kuva) - Tässä Soosuke selittää väärinkäsitystä, ettei hän suinkaan ole kihloissa, vaan hänen seurassaan ollut henkilö oli naisroolien kabuki-näyttelijä Kikunojoo. Kun hän huomaa Akanen purskahtaneen itkuun, hän vaikeroi, että Akane ei suostu hänen vaimokseen ja pyytää auttamaan Akanen samurai-statuksen palauttamisessa, vaikka he eivät silloin koskaan voi yhdessä, mutta silti Akane ei halua antaa hänen olla kenenkään muunkaan kanssa. Akane miettii, että heillä ei voi olla yhteistä tulevaisuutta ja jonain päivänä heidän täytyy erota. - Vaikka Akane on paljon nuorempi ja haavoittuvassa asemassa, on hänen ja Soosuken suhde kuitenkin tasavertaisen tuntuinen (kuva) - Kuvan kohtauksessa Akane kutsuu Soosuken jakamaan futoninsa “en halua että lähdet kotiin tänään”, ja Soosukea hermostuttaa, kun Akane kiehnää kovin lähellä (01:21:29) – SEIROU OPERA: AKEBONOROON HAHMOT - Uskollinen palvelija Riichiroo on Akanelle kuin isoveli ja pestautuu Akebonoroohon miespalvelijaksi olemaan tämän tukena (kuva) - Kuvan kohtauksessa Riichiroo sanoo Akanelle, että varmasti kuolleet rakkaat haluaisivat Akanen olevan ennemmin onnellinen kuin heittävän onnensa pois koston vuoksi - Häikäilemätön Yukari kertoo Akanelle, että Yoshiwarassa ei ole ystäviä vaan ainoastaan kilpailijoita, ja hän aikoo tulla Yoshiwaran suurimmaksi oiraniksi ja vihjaa, että tietää Akanen ja Riichiroon suhteen olevan erityinen ja pitävänsä heitä silmällä heikkouksien varalta (kuva) - Yukari on kotoisin köyhistä oloista, joten hänelle elämä Yoshiwarassa on vain tie ylöspäin, ja hänen on vaikea sietää langenneita rikkaita tyttöjä, joille sinne päätyminen on kamala kohtalo (kuva) - Kuvan kohtauksessa Yukari miettii, että hänelle Yoshiwara tuntui paratiisilta, jossa ei tarvinnut nähdä nälkää ja jossa kovalla työllä saattoi edetä parempaan elämään. Akanen säälivä toteamus siitä, että kaikkien Yoshiwaraan päätyneiden on täytynyt kokea kamalia asioita, ärsyttää Yukaria, joka miettii, että tuo tyttö ei ole koskaan kokenut elämässään todellisia vaikeuksia. - Yukari alkaa kokea tunteita Riichiroota kohtaan, vaikka on aina ollut sitä mieltä, että rakkaus on vain sairaus joka saa naiset tekemään tyhmiä elämänvalintoja (kuva) - Sankin kootai -järjestelmän vuoksi lääninherrojen täytyi asua joka toinen vuosi Edossa ja joka toinen vuosi läänissään, jolloin shogunaatti pystyi pitämään heidän omaisuuttaan ja perhettään panttivankina kapinoiden ehkäisemiseksi - Oiran Asakeno on kylmä ja vaativa, mutta kuitenkin välittää pikkusisaristaan (kuva) - Sydämellinen oiran Aoi suhtautuu huumorilla siihen, että Akane yllätti hänet ja poikaystävänsä petipuuhista (kuva) - Aoi kertoo, että hän saa epävirallisesti viettää yhden yön kuussa poikaystävänsä Sakichin kanssa – kunhan maksaa yöstä itse - Aoi ja Sakichi ovat onnellisia rakastavaisia nyt, kun Aoin perheen traaginen epäonni on nyt kuitenkin johtanut siihen, että he voivat edes jollain tavalla olla yhdessä (kuva) - Aoi ja Sakichi kertovat, että vaikka he eivät voikaan viettää yhdessä erityisen romanttisena pidettyä täyden kuun yötä – koska Aoin täytyy silloin olla ykkösasiakkaansa kanssa – niin he ovat yhdessä sitten sitä edeltävän yön. Akane miettii, että vaikka hänellä ja Soosukella ei tule olemaan yhteistä tulevaisuutta, niin toivottavasti Aoi ja Sakichi voivat vielä saada toisensa. (01:42:56) – SEIROU OPERA: MUUT HAHMOT - Kauppias Matsuzakaya on maailman kuumin vanhempi herrasmies (kuva) - Virkamies Mitsuhashi vaikuttaa pintapuolisesti vähän hönöltä nuorten neitojen perässä juoksijalta, mutta paljastuu viekkaammaksi kuin ensin vaikuttaa (kuva) - Kabuki-näyttelijä Kikunojoo Seyama on Soosuken BFF, joka tässä kohtauksessa kiusoittelee Soosukea Akanesta (kuva) - Oikean maailman naisrooleihin erikoistunut kabuki-näyttelijälinja Kikunojoo Segawa - One Piecen transnaishahmo Kikunojoo on saanut inspiraation samasta hahmosta (varo spoilereita Wa-maa-juonikaaresta!) (01:51:06) – SEIROU OPERA: JULKAISU JA SEN PUUTE - Fanikäännöksen laatu on etenkin ensimmäisten 10 luvun verran luokaton, ja senkin jälkeen juonen seuraamista vaikeuttavia virheitä löytyy joka luvusta. Onneksi käännös paranee sarjan edetessä, ja ihan lopussa se on jo ihan OK. - Yoshiwaran sääntöjen mukaan miesasiakkaan tulee sitoutua yhteen kurtisaaniin, mutta fanikäännöstä lukemalla asia ei tule välttämättä yhtään selväksi (kuva) - Fanikäännöksessä paljastus siitä, että Soojiroo etsii Yoshiwarasta sinne aikoinaan myytyä siskoaan menee kokonaan pilalle – oikeasti samurai sanoo tässä “ehkä me ollaan köyhiä, mutta ei sentään niin köyhiä että meidän vanhemmat olisi myyneet meidän siskoja bordelliin, toisin kuin sinun siskollesi kävi” (kuva) - Ja asia mainitaan vielä heti seuraavalla sivulla! - Natsume Arata no kekkon (02:05:33) – SEIROU OPERA: SPOILERIOSIO (spoilerivaroitus) - Hupsis, Maaret puhuu välillä vähän epätarkasti petoksesta, vaikka kyseessä sarjassa ovat syytökset lahjusten antamisesta ja ottamisesta - Kaksoisitsemurha… vai onko?! (kuva) - Soosuke saa Nakamuran haaviinsa ennen Akanea ja on varannut koko Akebonoroon juhlistaakseen uutta liikekumppaniaan, jolloin Akanella ei ole muuta vaihtoehtoa kuin ottaa hänet takaisin (kuva) - Joviaali mutta epäilyttävä tohtori Makimura työskentelee päivisin lääkärinä ja öisin salaisena agenttina (kuva) - Kuvan kohtauksessa Makimura sattuu piiloutumaan yökeikalla Akanen huoneeseen epämääräisen selityksen kera, ja Akane miettii, että Makimuralla on paljon pahaenteisempi aura kuin päivällä heidän kohdatessaan, ja että Makimura haisee vereltä - Akane jää epämiellyttävästi Soosuken ja Seijiroon väliin, ja Seijiroo on aika punaisten lippujen mies (kuva) - Akane kohtaa viimein Nakamuran (kuva) - Kuvan kohtauksessa Nakamura selittää Akanelle, että on tajunnut, että hän Akane on hänen ahdinkonsa ja korruptionsa paljastumisen syypää, ja että hän ei voi edes tehdä seppukua rauhassa ennen kuin saa tietää, kuka Akane on ja missä kohtaa peliään hän epäonnistui, kun sai Akanen kimppuunsa. Akane haluaa saada Nakamuran ymmärtämään, että tämän “peli” itsessään on rikos, ja kertoo olevansa Nagakuran tytär ja kuinka paljon vanhempien ja ystävien tapattaminen on häntä satuttanut. Nakamura kuitenkin toteaa, ettei ollut henkilökohtaisesti vanhempien murhan takana, eikä edes muista Aoita ja Sakichia, eikä ymmärrä, miksi Akane on niin vihainen – kun eihän hän nyt itse jokaista tielleen tulevaa ötökkää vaivaudu liiskaamaan, kun hänen suosioonsa haluavat tekevät niin itsenäisesti. Akane kauhistuu kun tajuaa, ettei Nakamuralla ole mitään ongelmaa muiden elämän ja kunnian tuhoamisessa omaa peliään edistääkseen. - Ja sitten lopultakin pannaan! 好きな場所で自由働く生活を夢見てデザインを学んだんだけど、学んだ後に自分がどの道に進んだらいいかわからなくなっちゃった。という方向けのプログラムを準備中です。
理想の生活にむけでどう進んでいったらいいのか、次のアクションはなにか、不安を一緒に解決しながら進むプログラムを考えています。デザインのわからないところのサポートもしつつ、メインは進みたい方向に向かって本気で楽しく進むサポートをする感じです。
デザイン業と、コーチ講師業を2軸の事業になりますが、私の中では繋がっていて、「女性が自分の意志を出せる人生をつくる」という願いがあって活動しています。

大切にしていることは、ただ進む、とか稼ぐ、だけじゃなくて、本人の意志を確認しながら、やりたくない方向に進ませないことです。

私もフリーランスになって、間違ってやりたくない方向に進んで、迷走したことが何度もありました。

意思がない方に進むと、楽しくないし、本気になれなくて自信喪失にもつながりますので、気をつけて欲しいんです。

わたしも、Sakiさんと過ごした時間のおかげで、しっかり自分意志を反映したビジネスができてるので、私がSakiさんに起こしていただいたような変化を、私のお客様にも起こしたい！

When making mokuhanga and producing The Unfinished Print, I have looked towards various online tools for research and inspiration. One of these tools is ukiyo-e.org. A Japanese woodblock print database which collects and archives woodblock print collections from around the world.  John Resig is the chief software architect at the Khan Academy who, in 2013, for his love of mokuhanga and the Japanese woodblock print, and through his own  collection, developed ukiyo-e.org.  Those researching, collecting, and making mokuhanga can explore some of the best Japanese print collections at the click of a button. In this episode of The Unfinished Print, I speak with ukiyo-e.org developer John Resig about why he decided to create the website and how his collecting of mokuhanga and making mokuhanga affected that decision. John Resig  - Ukiyo-e.org, Digital Humanities Research, John's personal mokuhanga collection on Airtable,   Sky Above Clouds IV: After Georgia O'Keefe (2019) Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798-1861) - is considered one of the last “masters” of the ukiyo-e genre of Japanese woodblock printmaking. His designs range from landscapes, samurai and Chinese military heroes, as well as using various formats for his designs such as diptychs and triptychs.  Five portraits of the actor Ichikawa Danjuro VIII (1823-1854) in various roles (1849) yakusha-e - (役者絵) is the Japanese term for actor prints in mokuhanga.  Utagawa Kunisada (1786-1865) Tsukioka Yoshitoshi  1839-1892 (月岡 芳年) was a mokuhanga designer who is famous for his prints depicting violence and gore. His work is powerful, colourful, and one of the last vibrant moments of the ukiyo-e genre of woodblock prints. More information about Yoshitoshi's life and his copious amount of work can be found, here.   Iga no Tsubone and the Ghost of Fujiwara Nakanari, from the series One Hundred Ghost Stories from China and Japan (1865) Annie Bissett - is an American mokuhanga printmaker and graphic designer based in Rhode Island, USA. Her work touches on politics, and beauty. Her interview with The Unfinished Print can be found, here. Annie's work can be found, here. Irene (2023) Onchi Kōshirō (1891-1955) - originally designing poetry and books Onchi became on of the most I important sōsaku hanga artists and promotor of the medium. His works are saught after today. More info, here. Portrait of a Poet: Hagiwara Sakutarō (1886-1942) Meiji Era Prints - The Meiji Era of Japan was between 1868-1912 CE. This was a period of immense modernization and industrialization in Japan, where the Japanese economy was booming. New ideas within mokuhanga was occurring as well. Perspective, colour, through new pigments (gamboge, certain yellows), the advancement of photography, and new topics and themes (war, industry, architecture), the Meiji era print designer and publisher had a lot of choice when producing their prints.  Shigeru Kuriyama (1912-2010) - was a sōsaku hanga  printmaker who worked with Onchi Kōshirō (1891-1956), and U'nichi Hiratsuka (1895-1997). He founded the print magazine Yukari and Kasuri. His prints were focused on folk arts.   Fragrance of Lavender (1996) sōsaku-hanga - or creative prints, is a style of printmaking which is predominantly, although not exclusively, prints made by one person. It started in the early twentieth century in Japan, in the same period as the shin-hanga movement. The artist designs, carves, and prints their own works. The designs, especially in the early days, may seem rudimentary but the creation of self-made prints was a breakthrough for printmakers moving away from where only a select group of carvers, printers and publishers created woodblock prints.  Your First Print: David Bull - this was the first DVD I ever purchased on how to make mokuhanga. This was in and around 2007. While I look back at that time thinking about why I didn't take it up as seriously as I do now, I sometime wonder, "Where would I be now in my Mokuhanga journey?" I realize that that is a redundant way of thinking. I am where I am now today, and to be happy with just that. You can still find this product on Dave's website.  Takuji Hamanaka - printmaker based in Brookly, NY. Uses bokashi,  a printmaking technique, predominately in his works. Unique and powerful. website Instagram Collapse (2016) April Vollmer - is an established artist who works predominantly in mokuhanga. Her book Japanese Woodblock Print Workshop is one of the most authoritative books on the subject and has influenced many mokuhanga artists. April's interview with The Unfinished Print can be found, here. Wood Like Matsumura - is an online and brick and mortar store, for woodblock printmaking, located in Nerima City, Tōkyō. Yoshida Hiroshi (1876-1950) - a watercolorist, oil painter, and woodblock printmaker. Is associated with the resurgence of the woodblock print in Japan, and in the West. It was his early relationship with Watanabe Shōzaburō, having his first seven prints printed by the Shōzaburō atelier. This experience made Hiroshi believe that he could hire his own carvers and printers and produce woodblock prints, which he did in 1925.  Kiso River (1927) kabuki - is a traditional form of Japanese theatre which started in Kyoto on the banks of the Kamo River in the 17th Century. Today it is a multi million dollar business and is almost exclusively run, professionally, by The Shochiku Company. Kabuki, the word, is separated into three different sounds; ka - meaning to sing, bu - meaning to dance, and ki- meaning skill. There are various families in kabuki which generate actors, passing down tradition throughout the lineage. For more information please read this fine article from Nippon.com. There are many books written on the subject of kabuki, but in my opinion, to begin, one needs to read Leonard Pronko's work Theatre East & West, Kawatake Toshio's Kabuki, and Earl Ernst's The Kabuki Theatre. Online, please visit Kabuki21.com, who's site is unparalleled. On YouTube there is the new(ish) Kabuki In-Depth which is updated regularly on kabuki information and history, and is very well done.  Georgia O'Keeffe (1887 – 1986) was a renowned American artist, known for her pioneering contributions to modern American art, particularly in the realm of abstract and contemporary art. Lake George Reflection (1921) bokashi - is a mokuhanga technique, where the pigment fades from a heavy colour to a softer, broad colour. Made famous by prints designed by Hokusai and Hiroshige, this technique is, for me, the most popular technique utilized by  mokuhanga printmakers. There are various types: Ichimoji-bokashi or straight line graduation, used in the above mentioned Hiroshige and Hokusai prints. Ichimoji-mura-bokashi or straight line gradation with uneven edge. Ō-bokashi or wide gradation, Ate-nashi-bokashi or gradation without definition. Futa-iro-bokashi or two tone gradation, and ita-bokashi or softer-edge gradation, where the block is cut in a specific way to achieve this style of gradation. All of these styles of bokashi technique take practice and skill but are very much doable.  Bertha Lum (1869-1954) - was born in Iowa. Having begun travelling to Japan in 1903, Bertha Lum noticed the decline of the Japanese woodblock print in Japan in the early 20th Century, deciding to take up the medium. Lum began making woodblock prints after learning in Japan from an unknown teacher during her first trip to Japan. Japan, Lafcadio Hearn (1850-1904), and China influenced Bertha Lum's prints. Lum's work focused on these themes through an American lens.  Winter (1909) Frances Gearhart (1869-1958) - Born in Illinois, Gearhart was a self-taught artist who spent most of her life in California. Originally a watercolorist, Frances Gearhart began experimenting with Japanese woodblock and linoleum in and around 1913. The themes of her work are predominately landscapes of the Pacific Coast and other areas of California. Her work is associated with the Arts and Crafts movement in California. A fine article on Frances Gearhart's life can be found, here.  In The Sun (1930) Fujio Yoshida (1887-1997) - the wife of Hiroshi Yoshida and the mother of Tōshi Yoshida (1911-1995) and Hodaka Yoshida (1926-1995). Fujio was so much more than a mother and wife. She had a long and storied career as a painter and printmaker. Fujio's work used her travels and personal experiences to make her work. Subjects such as Japan during The Pacific War, abstraction, portraits, landscapes, still life, and nature were some of her themes. Her painting mediums were watercolour and oil. Her print work was designed by her and carved by Fujio.  Roses (1925) TinEye - is an image search and recognition company. They use technology which allows the user to search an image creating a reverse image match. More information can be found, here.  The Metropolitan Museum of Art - is the largest art museum in North and South America. It began to be assembled by John Jay (1817-1894) in the late 19th century. Incorporated in 1870, the museum has collected many essential pieces, such as the works of Henri Matisse (1869-1954) and Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919). For more information about the MET, you can find it here. Waseda University  - is a private research university located in Tōkyō, Japan. It was established in 1882. Waseda has one of the largest woodblock print databases in the world, and are free to use. More information can be found, here.  Ristumeikan - is a university founded in 1869, and located in Kyoto and Ōsaka. Like Waseda it holds one of the largest collection of Japanese woodblock prints. You can search their database, here.  Mike Lyon  -  is an American artist. The museum was once the mansion of wealthy American industrialist Henry Clay Frick (1849-1919). The museum houses some of the finest pieces of sculpture, paintings, and art in the United States. Their magazine Impressions is a biannual magazine that discusses in a scholarly way various Japanese arts. More information can be found, here.  Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) - born in Edo, Hiroshige is famous for his landscape series of that burgeoning city. The most famous series being, One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (1856-1859), and the landcape series, Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō (1833-1834). His work highlights bokashi, and bright colours. Nineteen people were killed by a former worker at a facility for people with disabilities in Sagamihara, Kanagawa Prefecture, on July 26, 2016. A memorial ceremony was held on Wednesday for the 19 people killed in the attack. Yukari Okutsu (54), who has lived in the facility since before the attack, told the gathering at the ceremony that she tries to ease the anxiety of her fellow residents by talking to them when they are in trouble. She went on to say, “My 19 friends, please continue watching over us from heaven.” Okutsu gave the first memorial speech by a resident of the facility. Tesla boss Elon Musk has accused US regulators of targeting him for "unrelenting investigation" because of his criticism of the government. We speak to Michelle Fleurry in New York. The Indonesian President Joko Widodo called on global unity to revive the global economy hit hard by the Covid pandemic. He was speaking at the start of the G20 meeting of finance ministers in Bali. One of the challenges those ministers will have to deal with is the amount of debt facing the world's poorest countries. According to figures from the International Monetary Fund almost 60 percent of low income countries - most of them in Africa - are at risk of struggling to pay back their debts. We asked Marcello Estevao from the World Bank what could be done. Two years on from the start of the pandemic, most visitors are still banned from Japan. Manga are comics or graphic novels originating from Japan. Not only do manga reveal and reinforce cultural values, beliefs, and norms, particularly in Japan, but they can also be used as a teaching tool and source of information. Manga and other comics can be used in medicine to learn and teach about illness and to build empathy. They also have the power to shape public understanding of mental health issues, even nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI).In this episode, Dr. Yukari Seko explains how self-injury and the characters who engage in the behavior are portrayed in Japanese manga. She also discusses the importance of manga within Japanese culture. In episode 172 UNP founder and curator Grant Scott is in his shed reflecting on emotions and memory within photography, the importance of the family album and how life informs who we are and what we photograph. Plus this week photographer Yukari Chikura on the challenge of supplying Grant with an audio file no longer than 5 minutes in length in which she answer's the question ‘What Does Photography Mean to You?' Yukari Chikura was born in Tokyo, Japan. After graduating from Music University, she became a music composer, computer programmer, designer and photographer. As a young photographer Chikura has already won many prizes, among others the Photolucida Critical Mass Top50 Winner in 2016 and 2015, the International Photography Award and the Sony World Photography Awards. She has held solo exhibitions in Japan, and group exhibitions in museums and galleries worldwide. Her work is collected by the Griffin Photography Museum in US, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France and K*MoPA (the Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts). Chikura is the winner of Steidl Book Award 2016 and her work from her series ZAIDO was published by STEIDL, in 2020.  Her work has been published in the New York Times and is held in collections including the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris and the Griffin Museum of Photography in Winchester, Massachusetts. Chikura has been honored at the LensCulture Emerging Talent Awards, the International Photography Awards, Critical Mass and the Sony World Photography Awards, among others. In 2015 she was artist in residence at the Mt. There are two unsolved cases that hopefully, you can help solve. One involved a woman from North Carolina who was murdered and then left in a house that was set on fire. And the other case involved a young girl from Japan who disappeared from a pachinko parlor. These are the stories of Denise Johnson and Yukari Yokoyama.

To learn more about the importance of prison journalism and the challenges of reporting from behind bars during the COVID-19 pandemic, we spoke with Yukari Kane and Shaheen Pasha, co-founders and -executive directors of the Prison Journalism Project. In this episode, Kane and Pasha discuss the power of teaching journalism behind bars, particularly during a pandemic; the importance of integrating prison journalism into not only the larger field of journalism, but also broader conversations around criminal justice reform; the nuance of defining the genre of “prison journalism”; and the challenges of fact-checking, verification, and credibility in a space with limited access to the internet and outside sources.
