The Atlanta Braves came into the 2024 season with lofty expectations after winning the most games in baseball last season. However, things have taken a bit of a turn for Atlanta in their last 40 games — they've gone 17-23 and have fallen 10 games behind the Philadelphia Phillies for first place in the National League East.Jake Mintz and Jordan Shusterman examine what exactly has gone wrong for the Atlanta Braves this season and why there is still hope for them to make the postseason despite losing Spencer Strider and Ronald Acuna Jr. for the rest of the season. But considering they haven't made too many changes to their 2023 squad, being shutout by Albert Suarez and the Baltimore Orioles should raise some red flags. Also on this episode of the Baseball Bar-B-Cast, the guys talk about Paul Skenes receiving a rare standing ovation on the road following a 6+-innings performance agains the St. Louis Cardinals, Major League Baseball dropping the ball when it came to the debut of Rintaro Sasaki and Cavan Biggio being traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Readers, Friends, Members of the Scientific Community! You, astute as you are, may recall a moment in the distant past in which Sara and Runa adamantly proclaimed that they would never cover Steins;Gate on the podcast - This memory which some of you may hold is LIVING PROOF of the phenomena which we will henceforth discuss in today's episode. You see, that was an alternate, parallel timeline in which we did not discuss Steins;Gate! Thanks to miracles no smaller than the manipulation of the flow of time itself, and also Sara's carefully curated Steins;Gate Abridged playlist, we have arrived at the present day, present timeline. This month, Sara and Runa discuss the ins and outs, befores and afters, and the even the erstwhiles of the timeline hopping narrative of Steins;Gate (2009). As part of the Science Adventure series it shares some references to a previous Say it in Red subject: Chaos;Head Noah. In both games you can see characters grounded in the culture and various subcultures of specific regions of Tokyo (Shibuya for Chaos;Head and Akihabara in Steins;Gate) along with characters who engage with internet subcultures and message boards like 4Chan. Where Chaos;Head focused on the protagonist's dysfunction and delusions having an impact on reality itself, Steins;Gate focuses on a small group of university students who inadvertently create not one but two different forms of time travel. The first allows them to send text messages to people in the past, altering the conditions of reality in the present. The second allows them to send their own consciousness back through time to a previous date. Both of these methods rely on a microwave connected to a cell phone receiver. As the club dabbles (and then fully plunges) into time travel and time alteration, our Protagonist Rintaro Okabe realizes that his dear childhood friend Mayuri seems doomed, perhaps even destined, to die no matter how they try to change the course of history. Throughout all of this, the genius girl who Rintaro is definitely not fond of and intimidated by, Kurisu Makise, is improving their time travel devices and discussing the theories, implications, and repercussions of their meddling with Time. In between all of this, they also find time to flirt while revealing themselves to each be nerds who spend a lot of time arguing about conspiracy theories on 4chan. In the end, however, Rintaro Okabe faces a profound dilemma, one that will force him to undo all of his work and truly consider the potential, and futility, of time travel. For this episode, we followed a Steins;Gate Abridged playlist which Sara constructed - this playlist cuts out portions of the game, including sections which include significant and prolonged transphobia. We don't discuss that material in detail, but we do reference it as part of our discussions.  As always, if you enjoy our show please consider rating us and leaving a review wherever you listen to podcasts! Our patreon (at patreon.com/sayitinred) also hosts a growing number of bonus episodes, released around the second week of each month. Our most recent episodes include a reflection on the a full overview of Touhou and its many girls, an exploration of Fantasy Romance webcomics and manwha tropes, and most recently: a lengthy expedition into the House of Leaves.

Hailing originally from Tokyo, Japan, Rintaro Mikami is a jazz drummer, percussionist and composer based in New York City. Known for a wide range dynamics, supportive orchestration, and very narrative performance and compositions, Rintaro draws from a jazz tradition to a range of influences from rock to world cultural music such as Brazilian, Argentinian and mid-Eastern.    He started playing drums at the age of 12 and immediately showed his talent in local music community. After working as a drummer in rock music scene in Tokyo, his musical interest gradually gravitated towards Jazz.    Rintaro's early life on the small island of Kuchinoerabu in the south of Japan inspired his debut release as a leader, First Fish. For two years during childhood, Mikami gained life lessons on Kuchinoerabu that he likely wouldn't have in his native Tokyo.   First Fish refers to Mikami's earliest experience living on the island, a memory that would guide him as he matured and developed his own artistic sensibility after returning to Tokyo. Later he pursued music studies for seven years in the great music capital of New York, and grew to become the fine drummer and creative, well-rounded musician that we hear now. All nine tracks on First Fish weave together the story of Mikami's journey, from the island to this day.

These are the two strangest episodes of Paranoia Agent (and considering what's already happened, that's saying something). In “ETC,” a gaggle of gossiping neighbors trades tall tales about Shonen Bat. Satoshi Kon assembled a murderer's row of Madhouse employees (including the legendary Rintaro!) to animate the individual segments of this micro-anthology. Then, in “Mellow Maromi,” the series enters its own meta-verse, with an episode depicting a team of overworked people trying to make a single episode of an anime. According to our research, Kon originally wanted this to be a live-action episode about the making of _Paranoia Agent _itself. Joseph and Ian are joined by returning guest Eric Thurm and his colleague Chingy Nea. Together, the two also covered all of Paranoia Agent in their ‘Behind Anime Lines' column on Fanbyte. We also very very briefly talk about Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Battle 22 for the PlayStation. Here are some reviews I found for the game: GameSpot give it a 1.2/10, calling it a "really, really terrible game." X-Play said it was "a waste of time and money." Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine gave it a 1/5, the second lowest score possible. Electronic Gaming Monthly said that "someone crapped in a jewel case and passed it off as a game." On this episode, Cat and Joe discuss and review Rintaro’s 2001 cult classic sci-fi-meets-1920s-Art-Deco film, Metropolis. A blast from the past, and a blast from the future, this film is based on the 1949 manga of the same name, illustrated by Osama Tezuka (of AstroBoy fame), who very VERY loosely based his manga on the 1927 German expressionist sci-fi drama film by Fritz Lang (also of the same name). The connection is very tenuous, but still, it annoyed the Germans enough for them to rename it ’Robotic Angel’ when the manga was released there. So, close enough? Included in the podcast is the full interview, in which Helen walks Evan through her early exposure to anime, the state of anime fandom when she first began writing about it, and the importance of preserving the artistic history of anime. Big thanks to Helen for taking the time to chat at a very busy convention! Direct Download – RSS Feed – iTunes – Send us Feedback! – More episodes Runtime: 41 minutes Show Notes Opening Song: “Blues Machine” by Scott Gratton We start by talking about one of Helen’s panels, “The Last of the Giants,” about the early post-war manga/anime artists. Manga artist and anime director Osamu Tezuka is the biggest name mentioned, as he popularized a lot of what we now know as anime and manga. Rintaro is a director who worked with Tezuka and is still active. Evan briefly (and quietly) mentions director Osamu Dezaki as an example of someone who worked with Tezuka and recently passed away. Helen discusses how she first got interested in anime. The series that she watched when she was younger is called Marine Boy. Followed by the stories of Helen running the first anime-centric convention video room and first anime magazine in the UK. Helen name-drops a number of influential figures in UK anime fandom here, including Steve Kyte, Wil Overton, Peter Goll, and Jonathan Clements (who wrote Anime: A History and co-authored The Anime Encyclopedia with Helen).  Evan asks what areas of knowledge are still lacking in modern anime fandom. Ben Ettinger from AniPages gets name-dropped. Yukiko Horiguchi is the Kyoto Animation animator Evan mentions. Our Song is the pop star-centric series Helen mentions. Twitter: Ani-Gamers, Evan, Helen Check out Helen’s blog, where you can also find information about her books as well as contact information. Evan hosts the Crunchycast podcast on Crunchyroll and writes for Otaku USA Magazine. Evan will be at Anime Expo in Los Angeles on July 4 weekend. Ending Song: “Blues Machine” by Scott Gratton
