I Asked 100+ Millionaires If Money Makes You Happy

If you're a founder doing at least $3M/year in sales, check out Hampton: https://www.joinhampton.com/.There is no amount of money that will make you happy. There is also no amount that will stop making you more happy. Both of those things are true. Our producer is not rich. But she has talked to 100+ people who are, and she (I) has learned a lot about your kind (is that wrong to say?).In the Moneywise pilot, we asked the question “at what point will more money stop making you happy”. Turns out, that was a pretty stupid question. So in this episode, we're fixing that. This is an episode of Moneywise unlike any other. This is a solo essay-style inside-outsider's take on wealth and happiness, based on the past year of peaking behind the curtain at what truly makes millionaires lives better… and worse. Backed up by quotes from our guests and of course, real studies. Here's what we talk about:Money doesn't make you happy. It can only remove stress. The “happiness number” is a myth but knowing your “freedom number” changes everything. Most people don't want money, they want the freedom they think money will give them.Hitting your financial goal won't feel like you imagined.Founders often feel lost post-exit because they unknowingly traded hope for cash.Wealth adds new stress.Money can't buy you meaningful experiences, and you need to stop thinking it can.If you expect money to do the emotional heavy lifting in your life, you will never be satisfied.Money is the key, not the door. It unlocks your potential but it won't add anything more to your life.Cool Links:Hampton https://www.joinhampton.com/Lower Street https://www.lowerstreet.co/Chapters:(00:00) Introduction and Confession(00:35) Reflecting on 50 Episodes(02:24) Revisiting the Happiness Threshold(03:09) Money as a Subtractive Tool(03:48) The Freedom Number vs. Happiness(05:07) Studies and Research on Wealth and Happiness(14:39) The Hedonic Treadmill and Wealth's Paradox(17:45) Hope and the Entrepreneur's Journey(25:26) Concluding Thoughts and Freedom NumbersThis podcast is a ridiculous concept: high-net-worth people reveal their personal finances.Inspired by real conversations happening in the Hampton community. You Host - Jackie LamportNot really the host, but the producer.Wrote this sentence.Older than I appear, I promise.References:Kahneman, D., & Deaton, A. Do you crave a richer, more adventurous life? On today's episode, we're exploring the concept of a “psychologically rich life”—one filled with novel experiences, deeper connections, and a sense of wonder. It turns out, happiness and meaning aren't the only ingredients for a fulfilling life. Psychological richness can add depth and vibrancy to your everyday routine. I'm talking to Dr. Shigehiro Oishi, a leading happiness researcher, psychologist, and celebrated author of Life in Three Dimensions. With a career spanning groundbreaking research on human well-being, he's here to share what it means to live a truly adventurous and reflective life—and how you can start making small changes to experience richer, more fulfilling days. Some of the things we discuss are: What makes a “psychologically rich life” (and why it's different from happiness or meaning). Simple ways to add adventure and spontaneous joy to your daily routine. Why routines and rigid habits might be holding you back. A powerful mindset shift for navigating failures and setbacks. How storytelling can transform even ordinary experiences into extraordinary ones. What makes a good life? For decades, psychologists have debated whether true fulfillment comes from happiness—a life of comfort and joy—or meaning—a life of purpose and impact. But what if there's a third way?University of Chicago psychology professor Shigehiro Oishi has spent his career studying happiness, meaning, and what truly brings people deep satisfaction. His new research suggests that some of the most fulfilled people don't prioritize either—they live psychologically rich lives, full of novelty, challenges, and transformative experiences. In this episode, Oishi explains why psychological richness might be the missing piece in our search for fulfillment.

It's an old-school episode as David and Tamler dive into some intriguing research on the origins of cultural differences. Two neighboring communities in communist China were assigned to be wheat farmers and rice farmers. Seventy years later, the people in the rice farming communities showed signs of being more collectivist, relational, and holistic than the people in the wheat farming communities. Plus, we have some questions about a new study on censorship and self-censorship among social psychologists. So Oishi crafts music that evokes the paradoxical nature of the Earth's lithosphere: a surface serenity belying a churning, vibrant undercurrent. The upcoming "Lithosphere" EP exemplifies this quality, offering four distinct terrains for sonic exploration. Our premiere today, the title track "Lithosphere," embodies this dichotomy perfectly. Ethereal whispers hang in the air, like the faint tremors felt beneath the Earth's crust. The eerily beautiful atmosphere is layered over a deep, rumbling groove. Glassy pads shimmer like subterranean crystals, while bass stabs punctuate the soundscape with the percussive force of tectonic shifts. This subtle tension between tranquility and subterranean energy makes "Lithosphere" perfect for those seeking a unique after-hours experience. Men hvilke liv ønsker folk å leve? Happy and meaningful lives are great, but they can be a bit boring at times. Erin Westgate studies another construct of a well-lived life called Psychological Richness. When you are psychologically rich you have a life that is full of exciting and perspective-changing experiences. Listen in to hear Dr. Westgate share her cutting-edge research in this area and strategies to grow your psychologically rich life today! About Dr. Erin WestgateDr. Erin Westgate (she/her/hers) is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Florida, where she studies boredom, interest, and why some thoughts are more engaging than others. She received her PhD in social psychology from the University of Virginia in 2018, and her undergraduate degree from Reed College. Much of her research has been on the conditions under which people enjoy or do not enjoy their own thoughts. She has extended that work to the larger question of why people become bored, developing a new model of boredom that explains what boredom is, why we experience it, and what happens when we do. Her recent work focuses on the desire for a "psychologically rich" life (versus a happy or meaningful one) and why some people seek out a life filled with a variety of interesting experiences.  Key TakeawaysPsychological richness is a new construct in psychology that is different but related to happiness and meaning Happy lives lead to personal satisfaction, meaningful lives lead to social contributions and psychologically rich lives lead to wisdom You can develop psychological richness by being challenged, traveling, and increasing variety in your day Psychological richness may help you see challenges as opportunities to grow Productive procrastination is an effective way to procrastinate and does not lead to worse outcomes compared to non-procrastinators Boredom is not good or bad, it's information Relevant Resources Mentionedhttps://www.erinwestgate.com/uploads/7/6/4/1/7641726/oishi.westgate.psychrev.2021.pdf (A Psychologically Rich Life) by Oishi and Westgate https://www.erinwestgate.com/uploads/7/6/4/1/7641726/westgate_spsp2014_shock.pdf (Shocking research on being alone with your thoughts )by Erin Westgate Research article about https://www.researchgate.net/publication/360193489_An_Infectious_Silver_Lining_Is_There_a_Positive_Relationship_Between_Recovering_From_a_COVID_Infection_and_Psychological_Richness_of_Life (Psychological Richness During COVID) Erin Westgate on https://www.apa.org/news/podcasts/speaking-of-psychology/boredom-issues-covid-19 (Why Boredom Is So Interesting) https://drdianahill.com/extras/ (Download Your Daily Practice for Episode 34 Here) Sign up for https://drdianahill.com/striving-thriving-summit-2022/ (From Striving to Thriving 2.0)! https://drdianahill.com/events/ (Join Diana at an upcoming event) https://drdianahill.com/reset-and-restore-retreat/ (Reserve your spot with Diana for Retreat in Costa Rica in 2023)! Jeanne Simons devoted her career as a social worker and educator to the study, treatment, and care of children with autism. In 1955, she established the Linwood Children's Center in Ellicott City, Maryland, one of the first schools dedicated to children with autism. Her Linwood Model, developed there, was widely adopted and still forms the basis for a variety of autism intervention techniques. Incredibly—although unknown at the time—Jeanne was herself autistic. Behind the Mirror: The Story of a Pioneer in Autism Treatment and Her Work with Children on the Spectrum (Johns Hopkins UP, 2021) reveals the remarkable tale of Simons. In this interview I speak with Dr. Sabine Oishi, who co-author this book with Simons and also the book, the hidden child.
